Advances in Multi-Terabit, Long-Haul WDM Transmission for Terrestrial Networks

This paper reviews the recent advances in multi-terabit long-haul transmission technologies for terrestrial optical networks. The use of high performance new fibres, low-noise Raman amplification, optimised modulation formats, and forward error correction is shown to be effective for capacity and distance expansion.     

Interference of Data Transmission in Access and Backbone Networks by High-Power Sensor System

Currently, individual optical fibers are mostly used for each non-data application, which is very inefficient and uneconomical. Sharing a single fiber for multiple applications is a promising solution. However, in the case of a non-data application, the situation is much more complicated compared to data because of special application´s requirements. In laboratory setup, we performed a measurement with a standard G.652D optical fiber for analyzing possible interaction of stable frequency/accurate time transmission, 1.25/10Gbps data transmission (typical bitrates for access point-to-point networks), and high-power sensor signal for different channel spacing and different pulse duration of sensor signal.     

Application of Fiber-Optical Techniques in the Access Transmission and Backbone Transport of Mobile Networks

Abstract

Fixed access networks widely employ fiber-optical techniques due to the extremely wide bandwidth offered to subscribers. In the last decade, there has also been an enormous increase of user data visible in mobile systems. The importance of fiber-optical techniques within the fixed transmission/transport networks of mobile systems is therefore inevitably increasing. This article summarizes a few reasons and gives examples why and how fiber-optic techniques are employed efficiently in second-generation networks.     

Experimental Investigation on Transmission Control Protocol Throughput Behavior in Optical Fiber Access Networks

ABSTRACT

This article describes an experimental investigation on the behavior of transmission control protocol in throughput measurements to be used in the verification of the service-level agreement between the Internet service provider and user in terms of line capacity for ultra-broadband access networks typical of fiber-to-the-x architectures. It is experimentally shown different conditions in high bandwidth-delay product links where the estimation of the line capacity based on a single transmission control protocol session results are unreliable. Simple equations reported in this work, and experimentally verified, point out the conditions in terms of packet loss, time delay, and line capacity, that allow consideration of the reliability of the measurement carried out with a single transmission control protocol session test by adopting a suitable measurement time duration.     

无线紫外光散射通信中多信道接入技术研究

针对无线紫外光散射通信MAC层多信道接入技术的特点,结合紫外光散射通信的基本原理,对紫外光非直视通信的三种工作方式进行分析,在通信节点处配置多套紫外收发器的情况下,建立了紫外光通信的节点模型和信道模型,进行多信道的接入研究。利用NS2仿真软件,对紫外光非直视的三种多信道通信方式在不同的拓扑结构下进行了仿真,结果表明,该紫外光多信道接入技术能在一定程度上利用多个信道同时进行通信,大大增加网络的有效吞吐量。     

多路音频信号的数字化光纤传输系统

在信息传输的各个领域中，光纤作为传输信号媒介的应用得以迅速发展。光纤的音频多路数字化传输也是光纤领域目前开发的热点课题之一，它充分利用光纤本身所具有的各种特点，使音频信号的传输更有效、更可靠。本文利用串行信号的时分复用技术，完成了多路音频数字化信号的光纤传输。提出信号传输中,数据信号和控制信号的复用及解复用解决方法。     

Optical Devices for Optical Access Networks Recent Progress in Semiconductor Optical Devices and Optical Modules

Cost-effectiveness is essential in developing optical access network systems. To reduce system costs, both improved system and component technologies are required. Reducing the costs of optical devices and modules in an optical network unit is especially necessary. In this paper, the requirements for optical devices in optical access networks and modules are clarified. Moreover, we also review the recent progress in technologies for semiconductor optical devices and hybrid integration for low-cost optical modules in access networks.     

Recent Advances in TXRF

Abstract

Total reflection X‐ray fluorescence analysis (TXRF) is a special method of energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence analysis extending EDXRF to the ultra trace element level. The achievable detection limits depend on the excitation source and are in the range of picograms to femtograms. Only small amounts of sample are required and the quantification by adding one element as an internal standard is easy as thin film approximation is valid. In this article, the recent advances in TXRF are reviewed with over 80 references. The principles, advantages, instrumentation, improvements with X‐ray optics, synchrotron radiation as excitation sources as well as various fields of application, wafer surface analysis, depth profiling, absorption spectroscopy, medical samples, biological samples, environmental monitoring, archeological and polymer samples are described. Related techniques are also mentioned and discussed.     

Metro Optical Networks for Homeland Security

Metro optical networks provide an enticing opportunity for strengthening homeland security. Many existing and emerging fiber-optic networks can be adapted for enhanced security applications. Applications include airports, theme parks, sports venues, and border surveillance systems. Here real-time high-quality video and captured images can be collected, transported, processed, and stored for security applications. Video and data collection are important also at correctional facilities, courts, infrastructure (e.g., dams, bridges, railroads, reservoirs, power stations), and at military and other government locations. The scaling of DWDM-based networks allows vast amounts of data to be collected and transported including biometric features of individuals at security check points. Here applications will be discussed along with potential solutions and challenges. Examples of solutions to these problems are given. This includes a discussion of metropolitan aggregation platforms for voice, video, and data that are SONET compliant for use in SONET networks and the use of DWDM technology for scaling and transporting a variety of protocols. Element management software allows not only network status monitoring, but also provides optimized allocation of network resources through the use of optical switches or electrical cross connects.

We survey this progress and highlight new definitions and notions that have been the subject of intense study in recent work.

Recent Advances in Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy

Abstract

A proliferation of applications for near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy has been driven by recent advances in instrumentation and chemometrics. These include the development of smaller, portable instruments with no moving parts, suitable for process environments, and new data treatments and calibration algorithms to model nonlinear relationships between spectra and chemical constituents. The intent of this review is to focus on recent developments in near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy, including chemometrics and new applications of NIR reflectance in several diverse fields, rather than to address indepth the historical development of NIR. Certain topics, such as chemometrics, deserve a comprehensive review by themselves, and the reader is urged to consult the original sources for greater depth. As a newcomer to the field, I have attempted to present those topics which may be of greater interest to the novice.

Some Recent Advances in Energetic Variational Approaches

In this paper, we summarize some recent advances related to the energetic variational approach (EnVarA), a general variational framework of building thermodynamically consistent models for complex fluids, by some examples. Particular focus will be placed on how to model systems involving chemo-mechanical couplings and non-isothermal effects.
