We study harmonic maps from Riemann surfaces M to the loop spaces ΩG of compact Lie groups G, using the twistor approach. Harmonic maps into loop spaces are of special interest because of their relation to the Yang-Mills equations on ℝ4. __________ Translated from Sovremennaya Matematika. Summary We produce complete solution formulas of selected functional equations of the formf(x +y) ±f(x + σ (ν)) = Σ I 2 =1 g l (x)h l (y),x, yG, where the functionsf,g 1,h 1 to be determined are complex valued functions on an abelian groupG and where σ:G→G is an involution ofG. The special case of σ=−I encompasses classical functional equations like d’Alembert’s, Wilson’s first generalization of it, Jensen’s equation and the quadratic equation. We solve these equations, the equation for symmetric second differences in product form and similar functional equations for a general involution σ.  相似文献

We study a class of nonlinear evolutionary equations generated by an elliptic pseudo-differential operator, and with nonlinearity of the form G(u x ) where cη2 ≤ G(η) ≤ Cη2 for large |η|. For the evolution in spaces of periodic functions with zero mean we demonstrate existence of a universal absorbing set and compact attractor. Furthermore, we show that the attractor is of a finite Hausdorf dimension. The dissipation mechanism for the class of equations studied in the paper is akin to the nonlinear saturation in the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. A similar generalization of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation was studied by Nicolaenko et al. under the assumption of a purely quadratic nonlinearity and reflection invariance of both: the equation and solutions.   相似文献

We study the question of which torsion subgroups of commutative algebraic groups over finite fields are contained in modular difference algebraic groups for some choice of a field automorphism. We show that if G is a simple commutative algebraic group over a finite field of characteristic p, ? is a prime different from p, and for some difference closed field (?, σ) the ?-primary torsion of G(?) is contained in a modular group definable in (?, σ), then it is contained in a group of the form {xG(?) :σ(x) =[a](x) } with a∈ℕ\p . We show that no such modular group can be found for many G of interest. In the cases that such equations may be found, we recover an effective version of a theorem of Boxall. Let G be a real connected Lie group for which the universal complexification G has a polar decomposition G G exp(i?), where ? denotes the Lie algebra of G. The present paper is concerned with Riemann G-domains over the complex group G viewed as a G-manifold via the left multiplication. Such a Riemann domain X is said to be of Reinhardt type if G contains a discrete cocompact subgroup $\Gamma$ for whichG/Γ is a Stein manifold. Here the following is proved: Every Riemann G-domain of Reinhardt type is schlicht, hence a G-tube domain, i.e., a G-invariant subdomain of G . As an application one obtains conditions for a holomorphically separable G-manifold to be a G-tube domain. Received: 22 October 1998  相似文献

LetG ⊂ Aut ℳ be a countable group, ℳ a Von Neumann algebra. LetE be a set of pure states on ℳ such thatG*EE, S G be the set ofG invariant states on ℳ andS E G =S Gw* cl coE. We investigate in this paper some geometric properties for the setS E G which turn out to be equivalent to amenability for the groupG. For example, we show thatS E G ⊂ ℳ* (S E G has the WRNP) implies that ℳ contains minimal projections (ê containsfinite G invariant orbits) hold true, for all ℳ iffG is amenable. Furthermore we show that ifG is amenable thenS GM * contains a big set, thus improving results obtained by Ching Chou in [2]. These results imply that no action of an amenable countable groupG on an arbitraryW* algebra ℳ iss — strongly ergodic. Moreover cardS GM * ≧2 c (see M. Choda [4], K. Schmidt [21] and compare with A. Connes and B. Weiss [5]). The author gratefully acknowledges the support of an Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Senior Fellowship.  相似文献

A direction–length framework is a pair (G,p) where G=(V;D,L) is a ‘mixed’ graph whose edges are labelled as ‘direction’ or ‘length’ edges and p is a map from V to ℝ d for some d. The label of an edge uv represents a direction or length constraint between p(u) and p(v). Let G + be obtained from G by adding, for each length edge e of G, a direction edge with the same end vertices as e. We show that (G,p) is bounded if and only if (G +,p) is infinitesimally rigid. This gives a characterization of when (G,p) is bounded in terms of the rank of the rigidity matrix of (G +,p). We use this to characterize when a mixed graph is generically bounded in ℝ d . As an application we deduce that if (G,p) is a globally rigid generic framework with at least two length edges and e is a length edge of G then (Ge,p) is bounded.  相似文献

Let M0 be the Minkowski space, let Λ2(M0) be the space of bivectors in M0, and let G1 ⊂ Λ2(M0) be the manifold of directions of the physical space, consisting of simple bivectors with square −1. A mapping F: U → Λ2(M0), U ⊂ ℝ4, satisfying the Maxwell equations is regarded as the tensor of an electromagnetic field in vacuum. The field is described on the basis of a special decomposition F = eω + h(*ω), where the mapping ω: U → G1 is called the direction of the field, and e: U → (0, +∞) and h: U → ℝ are the electric and magnetic coefficients of the field. The Maxwell equations are reformulated in terms of ω, e, and h. Electromagnetic fields whose set of directions is a point or a one-dimensional subset of G1 are considered. LetG be a discrete abelian group,Ĝ the character group ofG, andl (G)* the conjugate ofl (G) equipped with an Arens product. In many cases, we can find unitary functionsf such that χf is almost convergent to zero for all χ∈Ĝ. Some of these functions are then used to produce elements μ∈l (G)* such that γμ=0 whenever γ is an annihilator ofC 0(G). Regarded as Borel measures on βG, these elements satisfyxμ=0 for allx∈βG/G. They belong to the radical ofl (G)*, and each of them generates a left ideal ofl (G)* that contains no minimal left ideal.  相似文献

Let G be a locally compact group with a weight function ω. Recently, we have shown that the Banach space L0 (G,1/ω) can be identified with the strong dual of L1(G, ω)equipped with some locally convex topologies τ. Here we use this duality to introduce an Arens multiplication on (L1(G, ω), τ)**, and prove that the topological center of (L1(G, ω), τ)** is (L1(G, ω); this enables us to conclude that (L1(G, ω), τ) is Arens regular if and only if G is discrete. We also give a characterization for Arens regularity of L0 (G, 1/ω)1. Received: 8 March 2005  相似文献

We create a method which allows an arbitrary group G with an infrainvariant system ℒ(G) of subgroups to be embedded in a group G* with an infrainvariant system ℒ(G*) of subgroups, so that G α*G ∈ ℒ(G) for every subgroup G α*G ∈ ℒ(G*) and each factor B/A of a jump of subgroups in ℒ(G*) is isomorphic to a factor of a jump in ℒ(G), or to any specified group H. Using this method, we state new results on right-ordered groups. In particular, it is proved that every Conrad right-ordered group is embedded with preservation of order in a Conrad right-ordered group of Hahn type (i.e., a right-ordered group whose factors of jumps of convex subgroups are order isomorphic to the additive group ℝ); every right-ordered Smirnov group is embedded in a right-ordered Smirnov group of Hahn type; a new proof is given for the Holland–McCleary theorem on embedding every linearly ordered group in a linearly ordered group of Hahn type.  相似文献

The (G'/G, 1/G)-expansion method for finding exact travelling wave solutions of nonlinear evolution equations, which can be thought of as an extension of the (G'/G)-expansion method proposed recently, is presented. By using this method abundant travelling wave so- lutions with arbitrary parameters of the Zakharov equations are successfully obtained. When the parameters are replaced by special values, the well-known solitary wave solutions of the equations are rediscovered from the travelling waves.  相似文献

We prove (in ZFC) that for every infinite cardinal ϰ there are two graphsG 0,G 1 with χ(G 0)=χ(G 1)=ϰ+ and χ(G 0×G 1)=ϰ. We also prove a result from the other direction. If χ(G 0)≧≧ℵ0 and χ(G 1)=k<ω, then χ(G 0×G 1)=k.  相似文献

We prove that a 2-group has exactly five rational irreducible characters if and only if it is dihedral, semidihedral or generalized quaternion. For an arbitrary prime p, we say that an irreducible character χ of a p-group G is “almost rational” if ℚ(χ) is contained in the cyclotomic field ℚ p , and we write ar(G) to denote the number of almost-rational irreducible characters of G. For noncyclic p-groups, the two smallest possible values for ar(G) are p 2 and p 2 + p − 1, and we study p-groups G for which ar(G) is one of these two numbers. If ar(G) = p 2 + p − 1, we say that G is “exceptional”. We show that for exceptional groups, |G: G′| = p 2, and so the assertion about 2-groups with which we began follows from this. We show also that for each prime p, there are exceptional p-groups of arbitrarily large order, and for p ≥ 5, there is a pro-p-group with the property that all of its finite homomorphic images of order at least p 3 are exceptional.  相似文献

A group G is said to be rigid if it contains a normal series of the form G = G 1 > G 2 > … > G m  > G m + 1 = 1, whose quotients G i /G i + 1 are Abelian and are torsion free as right Z[G/G i ]-modules. In studying properties of such groups, it was shown, in particular, that the above series is defined by the group uniquely. It is known that finitely generated rigid groups are equationally Noetherian: i.e., for any n, every system of equations in x 1, …, x n over a given group is equivalent to some of its finite subsystems. This fact is equivalent to the Zariski topology being Noetherian on G n , which allowed the dimension theory in algebraic geometry over finitely generated rigid groups to have been constructed. It is proved that every rigid group is equationally Noetherian. LetG be a finite group, andS a subset ofG \ |1| withS =S −1. We useX = Cay(G,S) to denote the Cayley graph ofG with respect toS. We callS a Cl-subset ofG, if for any isomorphism Cay(G,S) ≈ Cay(G,T) there is an α∈ Aut(G) such thatS α =T. Assume that m is a positive integer.G is called anm-Cl-group if every subsetS ofG withS =S −1 and | S | ≤m is Cl. In this paper we prove that the alternating groupA 5 is a 4-Cl-group, which was a conjecture posed by Li and Praeger.  相似文献

Assume that G is a 3-colourable connected graph with e(G) = 2v(G) −k, where k≥ 4. It has been shown that s 3(G) ≥ 2 k −3, where s r (G) = P(G,r)/r! for any positive integer r and P(G, λ) is the chromatic polynomial of G. In this paper, we prove that if G is 2-connected and s 3(G) < 2 k −2, then G contains at most v(G) −k triangles; and the upper bound is attained only if G is a graph obtained by replacing each edge in the k-cycle C k by a 2-tree. By using this result, we settle the problem of determining if W(n, s) is χ-unique, where W(n, s) is the graph obtained from the wheel W n by deleting all but s consecutive spokes. Let G be a finite abelian group and its Sylow p-subgroup a direct product of copies of a cyclic group of order p~r,i.e.,a finite homocyclic abelian group.LetΔ~n (G) denote the n-th power of the augmentation idealΔ(G) of the integral group ring ZG.The paper gives an explicit structure of the consecutive quotient group Q_n(G)=Δ~n(G)/Δ~(n 1)(G) for any natural number n and as a consequence settles a problem of Karpilovsky for this particular class of finite abelian groups.  相似文献
