Summary The theory developed exhibits the following peculiar features: structures are discretizised in finite elements, the constitutive laws piecewise linearized, the problem is split in a preliminary linear elastic solution and a corrective nonlinear subproblem; concepts and techniques of quadratic and linear programming theory are utilized. The main results are: for the analysis under given loads and dislocations, a pair of extremum theorems for locking stresses, corresponding to dual quadratic programs; for the limit analysis with respect to locking situations two already known theorems, which are here deduced from the solvability conditions of the above quadratic programs and formulated as dual linear programs. The extension of the results to imperfectly locking behavior is carried out. Some examples illustrate the solution techniques based on the theory expounded.

Summary In a previous research we have shown that the KS-transformation, developed by Kustaanheimo and Stiefel for the regularization of the Kepler problem, may be interpreted as the correspondence which associates to each null 4-vector of the space of Minkowski a one-index spinor, defined up to a phase factor, and we have obtained a new form of the KS-transformation. In the present research we show that this formulation allows a straight derivation of the Hopf fibering of the sphere S3 (characterized by unit spinors) having the base space given by the section (sphere S2) of the light cone, and we show that the KS-transformation allows the quantization of the symplectic manifold S2 in the sense of Souriau. The sphere S3 turns out to be a contact quantized manifold. The bilinear relation characteristic of the KS-theory and the column vectors of the KS-matrix are intimately related to the contact structure.

Summary The paper discusses the collapse theorems for materials which do not exhibit normality of the strain rate vector to the yield surface in the superposed stress and strain rate spaces. The consequences of the lack of normality on the designs for minimum weight are considered.

Summary A probabilistic model of the geometric imperfections of a real structure is proposed, in order to provide a general theory of the stochastic response of structures in presence of small random deviations from the perfect scheme. The main statistical measures of the stochastic response are derived and an application to the study of a particular conservative elastic system is developed.

Summary The paper discusses the incremental boundary value problem for elastoplastic workhardening continua, allowing for distributed dislocations. A pair of dual extremum theorems reduces the problem to the optimization of convex quadratic forms subject to linear inequalities and equations: the first theorem takes as variables stress and plastic multiplier rates, the latter velocities and plastic multiplier rates. The conclusions reached are specialized to elastic perfectly plastic (nonhardening) cases. The problem is discussed both in the traditional terms of continuum mechanics and in matrix notation on the basis of finite element discretization, using some quadratic programming concepts. Finally a comparison is made with the classical incremental minimum principles of plasticity (Prager-Hodge, Greenberg), which are deduced from the present theorems in a form generalized to the distributed dislocations.

Summary Firstly, the classical interpretation of the mean rotation tensor of Cauchy and Novozhilov is revised. Indeed, two distinctive and defective features of this interpretation reflect a severe restriction on the class of admissible deformations. Secondly, an alternative measure of mean rotation is introduced and its explicit aspect for pure rotations, pure strains and additively pure rotations is determined.

Very few studies have been made of three-dimensional nonstationary cavitation flows. In [1, 2], differential equations were obtained for the shape of a nonstationary cavity by means of a method of sources and sinks distributed along the axis of thin axisymmetric body and the cavity. In the integro-differential equation obtained in the present paper, allowance is made for a number of additional terms, and this makes it possible to dispense with the requirement ¦ In ¦ 1 adopted in [1, 2]. The obtained equation is valid under the weaker restriction 1. In [3], the problem of determining the cavity shape is reduced to a system of integral equations. Examples of calculation of the cavity shape in accordance with the non-stationary equations of [1–3] are unknown. In [4], an equation is obtained for the shape of a thin axisymmetric nonstationary cavity on the basis of a semiempirical approach. In the present paper, an integro-differential equation for the shape of a thin axisymmetric nonstationary cavity is obtained to order 2 ( is a small constant parameter which has the order of the transverse-to-longitudinal dimension ratio of the system consisting of the cavity-forming body, the cavity, and the closing body). A boundary-value problem is formulated and an analytic solution to the corresponding differential equation is obtained in the first approximation (to terms of order 2 In ), A number of concrete examples is considered.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 38–47, July–August, 1980.I thank V. We are concerned with the coerciveness of the strain energy E(u) (in linear elasticity) associated with a displacement vector u on the Sobolev space H1 () or its subspaces, a domain in n representing an isotropic elastic body—certain specific cases are called Korn's inequalities. Sufficient (and necessary) conditions on the Lamé moduli for E(·) to be coercive (or uniformly positive) on such spaces are given, and the associated best possible constants are obtained for some cases.

New inversors are proposed which are generalizations of the well-known inversor of Peaucellier. It appears that a kite in the Peaucellier cell is replaceable by an arbitrary 4-bar linkage (abhk) whereas the direction and length of the straight line, produced by the inversor, can be manipulated through the particular choice of the relative polar coordinates of a vertex A of the triangular input link. Formulas are derived for practical inversors with a revolving input link. The ones selected are basically governed by the choice of two transmission angles, 1 and 3, by the length L of the acquired line, as well as by its direction represented by the angle /2- comprised between the line L and the frame.

Summary We study a mathematical model of thermal switch in a glass under the Joule heating. We prove the existence of solutions for the free boundary problem related to the model. This problem is a Stefan-type problem with a source depending on the free boundary and the latent heat depending on the history of the free boundary.

Summary Flood routing methods are numerical methods for estimating the movement of a flood wave along a channel reach, on the basis of the knowledge of the discharge hydrograph at the upstream end and of the hydraulic characteristics of the reach and, usually, in the hypothesis that no perturbation is coming from downstream (free boundary condition). The flood routing method wich is proposed is similar to the Muskingum one, but with variable and hydraulic parameters; it is able to estimate water levels too; is effective even if kinetic terms are not completely negligible; take advantage of the insignificance of the downstream condition and make it possible to obtain results starting upstream and proceeding downstream; for simplicity's sake, take advantage of the fact that the discharge loop of normal flood waves is quite small. Obtained results are much better that those obtainable from constant parameters methods and indeed, if the flood loop is less that 10%, very similar to those obtainable from more complex and time consuming models.

Summary Let denote the congruence of null geodesics associated with a given optical observer inV 4. We prove that determines a unique collection of vector fieldsM() ( =1, 2, 3) and (0) overV 4, satisfying a weak version of Killing's conditions. This allows a natural interpretation of these fields as the infinitesimal generators of spatial rotations and temporal translation relative to the given observer. We prove also that the definition of the fieldsM() and (0) is mathematically equivalent to the choice of a distinguished affine parameter f along the curves of, playing the role of a retarded distance from the observer. The relation between f and other possible definitions of distance is discussed.

Summary For the elementary (finite or infinitesimal) constituents of the structure are assumed generalized stress-strain relations which satisfy the condition of normality but which may exhibit work-softening, concavity of yield surfaces, variation of elastic coefficients with stress and/or plastic strain. The usual phenomena of geometric instability are excluded. Sufficient conditions are formulated for overall stability in spite of the presence of unstable elements, and for uniqueness of the incremental boundary-values problem. Conditions are discussed with a view to applications and expressed in terms of positive definiteness of appropriate quadratic forms. Finally, yield surfaces and flow laws for the structure are examined, and among other things their necessary association is shown.

We consider the parametrized family of equations tt ,u- xx u-au+u 2 2 u=O,x(0,L), with Dirichlet boundary conditions. This equation has finite-dimensional invariant manifolds of solutions. Studying the reduced equation to a four-dimensional manifold, we prove the existence of transversal homoclinic orbits to periodic solutions and of invariant sets with chaotic dynamics, provided that =2, 3, 4,.... For =1 we prove the existence of infinitely many first integrals pairwise in involution.

The results of investigations of inviscid flow over inverted cones with nose consisting of a spherical segment were published for the first time in Soviet literature in [1–4]. In the present paper, a numerical solution to this problem is obtained using the improved algorithms of [5, 6], which have proved themselves well in problems of exterior flow over surfaces with positive angles of inclination to the oncoming flow. It is shown that the Mach number 2 M , equilibrium and nonequilibrium physicochemical transformations in air (H = 60 km, V = 7.4 km/sec, R0 = 1 m), and the angle of attack 0 40° influence the investigated pressure distributions. A comparison of the results of the calculations with drainage experiments for M = 6, = 0-25° confirms the extended region of applicability of the developed numerical methods. Also proposed is a simple correlation of the dependence on the Mach number in the range 1.5 M of the shape of the shock wave near a sphere in a stream of ideal gas with adiabatic exponent = 1.4.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 1, pp. 178–183, January–February, 1981.

An interesting property of the flows of a binary mixture of neutral gases for which the molecular mass ratio =m/M1 is that within the limits of the applicability of continuum mechanics the components of the mixture may have different temperatures. The process of establishing the Maxwellian equilibrium state in such a mixture divides into several stages, which are characterized by relaxation times i which differ in order of magnitude. First the state of the light component reaches equilibrium, then the heavy component, after which equilibrium between the components is established [1]. In the simplest case the relaxation times differ from one another by a factor of *.Here the mixture component temperature difference relaxation time T /, where is the relaxation time for the light component. If 1, 1, so that T ~1, then for the characteristic hydrodynamic time scale t~1 the relative temperature difference will be of order unity. In the absence of strong external force fields the component velocity difference is negligibly small, since its relaxation time vt1.In the case of a fully ionized plasma the Chapman-Enskog method is quite easily extended to the case of the two-temperature mixture [3], since the Landau collision integral is used, which decomposes directly with respect to . In the Boltzmann cross collision integral, the quantity appears in the formulas relating the velocities before and after collision, which hinders the decomposition of this integral with respect to , which is necessary for calculating the relaxation terms in the equations for temperatures differing from zero in the Euler approximation [4] (the transport coefficients are calculated considerably more simply, since for their determination it is sufficient to account for only the first (Lorentzian [5]) terms of the decomposition of the cross collision integrals with respect to ). This led to the use in [4] for obtaining the equations of the considered continuum mixture of a specially constructed model kinetic equation (of the Bhatnagar-Krook type) which has an undetermined degree of accuracy. In the following we use the Boltzmann equations to obtain the equations of motion of a two-temperature binary gas mixture in an approximation analogous to that of Navier-Stokes (for convenience we shall term this approximation the Navier-Stokes approximation) to determine the transport coefficients and the relaxation terms of the equations for the temperatures. The equations in the Burnett approximation, and so on, may be obtained similarly, although this derivation is not useful in practice.

In the first part of our paper, we have extended the concepts of the classical convolution and the convolution scalar product given by I. Hlaváck and presented the concepts of the convolution vector and the convolution vector scalar product, which enable us to extend the initial value as well as the initial-boundary value problems for the equation with the operator coefficients to those for the system of equations with the operator coefficients. In the second part of this paper, based on the concepts of the convolution vector and the convolution vector scalar product, two fundamental types of reciprocal theorems of the non-local micropolar linear elastodynamics for inhomogeneous and anisotropic solids are derived. In the third part of this paper, based on the concepts and results in the first and second parts as well as the Lagrange multiplies method which is presented by W. Z. Chien, four main types of variational principles are given for the nonlocal micropolar linear elastodynamics for inhomogeneous and anisotropic solids. These are the counterparts of the variational principles of Hu-Washizu type, Hellinger-Reissner type and Gurtin type in classical elasticity as well as Hlaváck type and Iesan type in local micropolar and nonlocal elasticity. Finally, we have proved the equivalence of the last two main variational principles which are given in this paper.

The first goal of this paper is to study the large time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the 3-dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes system. The Marcinkiewicz space L3, is used to prove some asymptotic stability results for solutions with infinite energy. Next, this approach is applied to the analysis of two classical regularized Navier–Stokes systems. The first one was introduced by J. Leray and consists in mollifying the nonlinearity. The second one was proposed by J.-L. Lions, who added the artificial hyper-viscosity (–)/ 2, > 2 to the model. It is shown in the present paper that, in the whole space, solutions to those modified models converge as t toward solutions of the original Navier–Stokes system.
