Asymptotic properties of a real scalar self-interacting classical field depending on one variablez = t 2x 2 are studied. It is expected that quantum effects endow spacetime with stochastic properties near the Planck scale as exemplified by random fluctuations of the metric, usually referred to as spacetime foam or geometrodynamics. In this paper, a methodology is presented for incorporating Planck scale stochastic effects and corrections into general relativity within the ADM formalism, by coupling the Riemann 3-metric to white noise. The ADM—Cauchy evolution of a Riemann 3-metric h ij (t) induced on spacelike hypersurface C(t) can be interpreted within pure general relativity as a smooth geodesic flow in superspace, whose points consist of equivalence classes of 3-metrics. Coupling white noise to h ij gives Langevin stochastic differential equations for the Cauchy evolution of h ij, which is now a Brownian motion or diffusion in superspace. A fluctuation hij away from h ij is considered to be related to h ij by elements of the diffeomorphism group diff(C). Hydrodynamical Fokker—Planck continuity equations are formulated describing the stochastic Cauchy evolution of h ij as a probability flow. The Cauchy invariant or equilibrium solution gives a stationary probability distribution of fluctuations peaked around the deterministic metric. By selecting a physically viable ansatz for the scale dependent diffusion coefficient, one reproduces the Wheeler uncertainty relation for the metric fluctuations of quantum geometrodynamics. Treating h ij as a random variable, a non-linear Raychaudhuri—Langevin equation is derived describing the geometro-hydrodynamics of a congruence of fluid or dust matter propagating on the stochastic spacetime. For an initially converging congruence >0 at s the singularity =– at future proper time s=3/||$, which is expected in general relativity, is now smeared out near the Planck scale. Proper time s can be extended indefinitely (s) so that intrinsic metric fluctuations can restore geodesic completeness although the geodesics remain trapped for all time: although a singularity can be removed the collapsing matter still creates a black hole. A Fokker—Planck formulation also gives zero probability that – for s. Essentially, the short distance stochastic corrections to the deterministic equations of general relativity can remove pathologies such as singularities, conjugate points and geodesic incompleteness.  相似文献

We study the holomorphic structure of certain complex manifolds associated withW algebras, namely, the flag manifoldsW /T andW 1+/T 1+, and the spacesW /SL(),R) andW 1+/GL(,R), whereT andT 1+ are the maximal tori inW andW 1+. We compute their Ricci curvature and show how the results are related to the anomaly-freedom conditions forW andW 1+. A general formulation is given of Simon's Ising model inequality: whereB is any set of spins separating from . We show that b can be replaced by b A whereA is the spin system insideB containing . An advantage of this is that a finite algorithm can be given to compute the transition temperature to any desired accuracy. The analogous inequality for plane rotors is shown to hold if a certain conjecture can be proved. This conjecture is indeed verified in the simplest case, and leads to an upper bound on the critical temperature. (The conjecture has been proved in general by Rivasseau. We simulate the classical diffusion of a particle of massM in an infinite one-dimensional system of hard point particles of massm in equilibrium. Each computer run corresponds to about 108 collisions of the diffusive particle. We find that (t) 1/t fort large enough, and a crossover from an M m regime where=2 to=3 forM=m. The diffusion constant has a sharp maximum atM=m. We study moments x(t)2 and x(t)4, and examine the behavior ofq 2 (t)=x(t)4/3x(t)22. We find thatq(t)1 (consistent with a normal distribution) in theM limit (for all timest) and in the t limit for allM. We study in this Letter the asymptotic behavior, as t+, of the solutions of the one-dimensional Caldirola-Kanai equation for a large class of potentials satisfying the condition V(x)+ as |x|. We show, first of all, that if I is a closed interval containing no critical points of V, then the probability P t (t) of finding the particle inside I tends to zero as t+. On the other hand, when I contains critical points of V in its interior, we prove that P t (t) does not oscillate indefinitely, but tends to a limit as t+. In particular, when the potential has only isolated critical points x 1, ..., x N our results imply that the probability density of the particle tends to in the sense of distributions.Supported by Fulbright-MEC grant 85-07391.  相似文献

The symmetric spin-boson model without external field is treated for any type of coupling to the boson bath and any initial bath density matrix. With initially fully aligned spin (z (0)= =1), the proof is given that a partial relaxation (z (+) t1<) implies that there is no asymptotic-time (up-and-down) symmetry breaking (i.e. that z (+)=0). For the problem of a particle (interacting with free bosons) in a symmetric double well without spatial symmetry breaking before the infinite time limit, this means that att + the particle distribution becomes symmetric (irrespective of the full initial asymmetry) unless the particle fully remains (att + ) in Ihe starting well.  相似文献

For the zero-temperature Glauber dynamics of theq-state Potts model, the fractionr(q, t) of spins which never flip up to timet decays like a power lawr(q, t)t –(q) when the initial condition is random. By mapping the problem onto an exactly soluble one-species coagulation model (A+AA) or alternatively by transforming the problem into a free-fermion model, we obtain the exact expression of (q) for all values ofq. The influence of boundary conditions on square bond percolation for system sizes ranging from 10×10 to 240×240 is studied for the quantitiesP , , the effective percolation threshold and the finite-size scaling relations forP and . Forn spins 1/2 coupled linearly to a boson field in a volumeV n, the existence of the specific free energy is proved in the limitn ,V n withn/V n=const. The interaction is essentially of the mean field type, in as much as it is proportional to 1/V n; the coupling constants are allowed to be spin dependent. A variational expression is obtained for the limiting specific free energy, and a critical temperature is identified above which the system behaves as if there were no coupling at all.  相似文献

Moyal noncommutative star-product deformations of higher-dimensional gravitational Einstein-Hilbert actions via lower-dimensional SU(), W gauge theories are constructed explicitly based on the holographic reduction principle. New reparametrization invariant p-brane actions and their Moyal star product deformations follows. It is conjectured that topological Chern-Simons brane actions associated with higher-dimensional knots have a one-to-one correspondence with topological Chern-Simons Matrix models in the large N limit. The corresponding large N limit of Topological BF Matrix models leads to Kalb-Ramond couplings of antisymmetric-tensor fields to p-branes. The former Chern-Simons branes display higher-spin W symmetries which are very relevant in the study of W Gravity, the Quantum Hall effect and its higher-dimensional generalizations. We conclude by arguing why this interplay between condensed matter models, higher-dimensional extensions of the Quantum Hall effect, Chern-Simons Matrix models and Gravity needs to be investigated further within the framework of W Gauge theories.  相似文献

A theory of the azimuthal bunching of electrons injected into the betatron is presented and compared with the experiments described in [1]. The bunching is treated as a small perturbation of the stationary beam.The stationary injected beam is replaced by the corresponding equilibrium beam of the same perveance so that the angular velocity spread of the injected electrons is proportional to the square root of the injection perveance.Self-consistent wave solutions for the perturbation of the stationary solution are then found. Equations giving the amplification of small density or energy disturbances along the beam are derived. These disturbances are assumed to be introduced by density or velocity modulation of the injected beam. The condition for the spontaneous occurrence of bunching is deduced by assuming that the disturbances do not vanish even when there is no modulation of the injected beam. The resulting expressions for the threshold perveance and the rise-time of the disturbance are in reasonably good agreement with the experiments. Such agreement may be considered as further verification of the statement made in [1] that the amplification of the disturbances is caused by the negative mass instability mechanism.

For internal symmetries it is shown that it is possible to construct automorphisms for a Haag-Araki local ring system {(O)} from a local current affiliated to it. Although the chargesQ v for finite volumeV do not converge forV we prove the convergence of the corresponding automorphisms of {(O)}. For external symmetries which map bounded space-time regions into unbounded ones (e.g. translations) we have to require some additional continuity condition on the isomorphisms corresponding toQ v to get convergence.  相似文献

We investigate the statistics of the numberN(R, S) of lattice pointsnZ 2, in an annular domain (R, w)=(R+w)A\RA, whereR, w>0. HereA is a fixed convex set with smooth boundary andw is chosen so that the area of (R, w) isS. The statistics comes fromR being taken as random (with a smooth density) in some interval [c 1 T,c 2,T],c 2>c 1>0. We find that in the limitT the variance and distribution of N=N(R; S)–S depend strongly on howS grows withT. There is a saturation regimeS/T, asT, in which the fluctuations in N coming from the two boundaries of are independent. Then there is a scaling regime,S/Tz, 0<z<, in which the distribution depends onz in an almost periodic way going to a Gaussian asz0. The variance in this limit approachesz for genericA, but can be larger for degenerate cases. The former behavior is what one would expect from the Poisson limit of a distribution for annuli of finite area.  相似文献

In this paper we describe characteristic properties of the scattering data of the compatible eigenvalue problem for the pair of differential equations related to the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation whose solution is defined in some half-strip or in the quarter plane (0<x<)×[0,T), T. We suppose that this solution has a C initial function vanishing as x, and C boundary values, vanishing as t when T=. We study the corresponding scattering problem for the compatible Zakharov-Shabat system of differential equations associated with the mKdV equation and obtain a representation of the solution of the mKdV equation through Marchenko integral equations of the inverse scattering method. The kernel of these equations is valid only for x0 and it takes into account all specific properties of the pair of compatible differential equations in the chosen half-strip or in the quarter plane. The main result of the paper is the collection A–B–C of characteristic properties of the scattering functions given below.  相似文献
