Using the zero mode method, we compute the conductance of a wire consisting of a magnetic impurity coupled to two Luttinger liquid leads characterized by the Luttinger exponent alpha(>or=1). We find for resonance conditions, in which the Fermi energy of the leads is close to a single particle energy of the impurity, that the conductance as a function of temperature is G approximately equal (e(2)/h)(T/T(F))(2(alpha-2)), whereas for off-resonance conditions the conductance is G approximately equal (e(2)/h)(T/T(F))(2(alpha-1)). By applying either a gate voltage or a magnetic field or both, one of the spin components can be in resonance while the other is off resonance causing a strong asymmetry between the spin-up and spin-down conductances.  相似文献

The dc conductance of a short spin-incoherent Hubbard chain coupled to leads is investigated using quantum Monte Carlo calculations. In contrast with the Luttinger liquid regime, where the conductance is equal to the noninteracting value, the spin-incoherent regime displays a conductance that decreases rapidly with chain length down to a value of roughly 1.5 e2/h for a four site chain followed by a slower decrease for longer chains. We also discuss the resistance contribution from scattering in the contacts.  相似文献

We show that interference experiments can be used to identify the spin-incoherent regime of strongly interacting one-dimensional conductors. Two qualitative signatures of spin incoherence are found: a strong magnetic field dependence of the interference contrast and an anomalous scaling of the interference contrast with the applied voltage, with a temperature and magnetic field dependent scaling exponent. The experiments distinguish the spin-incoherent from the spin-polarized regime, and so may be useful in deciding between alternative explanations proposed for the anomalous conductance quantization observed in quantum point contacts and quantum wires at low density.  相似文献

By using the infinite time-evolving block decimation, we study quantum fidelity and entanglemententropy in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg alternating chain under an external magnetic field .The effects of the magnetic field on the fidelity are investigated, and its relation with the quantum hase transition (QPT) is analyzed. The phase diagram of the model is given accordingly, which supports the Haldane phase, the singlet-dimer phase, the Luttinger liquid phase and the paramagnetic phase. The scaling of entanglement entropy in the gapless Luttinger liquid phase is studied, and the central charge $c=1$ is obtained. We also study the relationship between the quantum coherence, string order parameter and QPTs. Results obtained from these quantum information observations are consistent with the previous reports.  相似文献

We suggest an experiment to study Luttinger liquid behavior in a one-dimensional nanostructure, avoiding the usual complications associated with transport measurements. The proposed setup consists of a quantum box, biased by a gate voltage, and side coupled to a quantum wire by a point contact. Close to the degeneracy points of the Coulomb blockaded box, and in the presence of a magnetic field sufficiently strong to spin polarize the electrons, the setup can be described as a Luttinger liquid interacting with an effective Kondo impurity. Using exact nonperturbative techniques, we predict that the differential capacitance of the box will exhibit distinctive Luttinger liquid scaling with temperature and gate voltage.  相似文献

Tunneling density of states (DOS) in Luttinger liquid has a dip at zero energy, commonly known as the zero-bias anomaly. In the presence of a magnetic field, in addition to the zero-bias anomaly, the DOS develops two peaks separated from the origin by the Zeeman energy. We show that these finite-bias anomalies are characterized by a power-law behavior of the DOS and the differential conductance, and find the corresponding exponents at arbitrary strength of the electron-electron interaction. The developed theory is applicable to various kinds of quantum wires, including carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

We used the Jordan–Wigner transform and the invariant eigenoperator method to study the magnetic phase diagram and the magnetization curve of the spin-1/2 alternating ferrimagnetic diamond chain in an external magnetic field at finite temperature. The magnetization versus external magnetic field curve exhibits a 1/3 magnetization plateau at absolute zero and finite temperatures, and the width of the 1/3 magnetization plateau was modulated by tuning the temperature and the exchange interactions. Three critical magnetic field intensities H_(CB), H_(CE) and H_(CS) were obtained, in which the H_(CB) and H_(CE) correspond to the appearance and disappearance of the 1/3 magnetization plateau, respectively, and the higher H_(CS) correspond to the appearance of fully polarized magnetization plateau of the system. The energies of elementary excitation ωσ,k(σ = 1, 2, 3) present the extrema of zero at the three critical magnetic fields at 0 K, i.e., [hω_(3,k)(HCB)]_(min)= 0, [hω_(2,k)(H_(CE))]_(max)= 0 and [hω _(2,k)(H_(CS))]_(min)= 0, and the magnetic phase diagram of magnetic field versus different exchange interactions at 0 K was established by the above relationships. According to the relationships between the system's magnetization curve at finite temperatures and the critical magnetic field intensities, the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram was drawn. It was observed that if the magnetic phase diagram shows a three-phase critical point, which is intersected by the ferrimagnetic phase, the ferrimagnetic plateau phase, and the Luttinger liquid phase, the disappearance of the1/3 magnetization plateau would inevitably occur. However, the 1/3 magnetization plateau would not disappear without the three-phase critical point. The appearance of the 1/3 magnetization plateau in the low temperature region is the macroscopic manifestations of quantum effect.  相似文献

We discuss the Luttinger liquid behaviour of a semiconducting quantum wire. We show that the measured value of the bulk critical exponent, αbulk, for the tunneling density of states can be easily calculated. Then, the problem of the transport through a quantum dot formed by two quantum point contacts along the quantum wire, weakly coupled to spinless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids is studied, including the action of a strong transverse magnetic field B. The known magnetic dependent peaks of the conductance, G(B), in the ballistic regime at a very low temperature, T, have to be reflected also in the transport at higher T and in different regimes. The temperature dependence of the maximum Gmax of the conductance peak, according to the Correlated Sequential Tunneling theory, yields the power law Gmax∝T2α end-1, with the critical exponent, αend, strongly reduced by B. This behaviour suggests the use of a similar device as a magnetic field modulated transistor.  相似文献

The binding energy and the polarizability are estimated for a shallow donor confined to move in a GaAs quantum well wire (QWW) with a rectangular and square cross-section under the action of an axial magnetic field. In this work, the Hass variational method within the effective mass approximation is used in the case of infinite and finite barrier QWWs. We present our results as a function of the size of the wire and for several values of the magnetic field strength. It is found that the magnetic field strongly reduces the polarizability. The finite barrier-height effect is important for smaller well widths. For higher fields and large wire, the effects of the magnetic field are predominant and the barrier potential is a small perturbation.  相似文献

Generation of deep-ultraviolet femtosecond pulses by four-wave mixing through filamentation in neon gas was demonstrated. Fundamental (omega) and second-harmonic (2omega) pulses of 25 fs Ti:sapphire amplifier output were focused into neon gas, and 20 microJ pulses with the center wavelength of 260 nm were produced by a four-wave mixing process, 2omega+2omega-omega?3omega through an ~15 cm filament. Additionally, pulses with an energy of 2 microJ at 200 nm were generated, probably by a cascaded process, 3omega+2omega-omega?4omega. The 260 nm pulses were compressed by a grating-based compressor and characterized by a dispersion-free transient grating frequency-resolved optical gating. The estimated pulse width was 12 fs.  相似文献

We present a 14N nuclear magnetic resonance study of a single crystal of CuBr4(C5H12N)2 (BPCB) consisting of weakly coupled spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladders. Treating ladders in the gapless phase as Luttinger liquids, we are able to fully account for (i) the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate T1(-1) at 250 mK and for (ii) the phase transition to a 3D ordered phase occurring below 110 mK due to weak interladder exchange coupling. BPCB is thus an excellent model system where the possibility to control Luttinger liquid parameters in a continuous manner is demonstrated and the Luttinger liquid model tested in detail over the whole fermion band.  相似文献

We show that in the presence of a slowly rotating strong transverse magnetic field there is an infinite spectrum of harmonic wave functions An due to the first order QED correction (in alpha2) given by the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian. The frequency shifts are integer multiples +/- omega(0)n of the magnetic field angular frequency rotation omega(0)=2pinu(m), and the several modes n are coupled to the nearest harmonics n+/-1. This is a new effect due to QED vacuum fluctuations, not exploited before, that can explain, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the recent experimental results of the PVLAS collaboration without the need of a low-mass intermediate particle, hence may dismiss the recent claim of the discovery of the axion.  相似文献

We discuss the Luttinger Liquid behaviour of Large Radius Carbon Nanotube e.g. the Multi Wall ones (MWNT), under the action of a transverse magnetic field B. Our results imply a reduction with B in the value of the bulk critical exponent, αbulk, for the tunneling density of states, which is in agreement with that observed in transport experiments. Then, the problem of transport through a Quantum Dot formed by two intramolecular tunneling barriers along the MWNT, weakly coupled to Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids is studied, including the action of a strong transverse magnetic field B. We predict the presence of some peaks in the conductance G versus B, related to the magnetic flux quantization in the ballistic regime, at a very low temperature T, and also at higher values of T, where the Luttinger behaviour dominates. The temperature dependence of the maximum Gmax of the conductance peak according to the Sequential Tunneling follows a power law, G ∝Tγe-1 with γe linearly dependent on the critical exponent, αend, strongly reduced by B.  相似文献

The singularity inside a spherical charged black hole, coupled to a spherical, massless scalar field is studied numerically. The profile of the characteristic scalar field was taken to be a power of advanced time with an exponent alpha>0. A critical exponent alpha(crit) exists. For exponents below the critical one (alphaalpha(crit)) an all-encompassing, spacelike singularity evolves, which completely blocks the "tunnel" inside the black hole, preventing the use of the black hole as a portal for hyperspace travel.  相似文献

The low-temperature heat capacity of a quasi-one-dimensional conductor in the Luttinger liquid state is studied for conductors with a charge density wave and without it. It is shown that pinning of the Luttinger liquid leads to localization of spins and a strong effect of the magnetic field on the thermodynamics of samples resembling the effect observed in recent experiments. We believe that this indicates the possibility of the formation of a Luttinger liquid in quasi-one-dimensional crystals.

Motivated by recent experiments on interacting cold atoms, we analyze interaction quenches in Luttinger liquids (LLs), where the interaction is ramped from zero to a finite value within a finite time. The fermionic single particle density matrix reveals several regions of spatial and temporal coordinates relative to the quench time, termed as Fermi liquid, sudden quench LL, adiabatic LL regime, and a LL regime with a time-dependent exponent. The various regimes can also be observed in the momentum distribution of the fermions, directly accessible through time of flight experiments. Most of our results apply to arbitrary quench protocols.  相似文献

We consider dynamical correlation functions of short range interacting electrons in one dimension at finite temperature. Below a critical value of the chemical potential there is no Fermi surface anymore, and the system can no longer be described as a Luttinger liquid. Its low temperature thermodynamics is that of an ideal gas. We identify the impenetrable electron gas model as a universal model for the gas phase and present exact and explicit expressions for the asymptotics of correlation functions at small temperatures, in the presence of a magnetic field.  相似文献

Thermodynamic and transport properties of a two-dimensional circular quantum dot are studied theoretically at zero magnetic field. In the limit of a large confining potential, where the dot spectrum exhibits a shell structure, it is argued that both spectral and transport properties should exhibit Luttinger liquid behavior. These predictions are verified by direct numerical diagonalization. The experimental implications of such Luttinger liquid characteristics are discussed.  相似文献

We derive, from first principles, the complete Luttinger liquid theory of abelian quantum Hall edge states. This theory includes disorder and Coulomb interactions as well as the coupling to external electromagnetic fields. We introduce a theory of spatially separated edge modes, find an enlarged dual symmetry and obtain a complete classification of quasiparticle operators and tunneling exponents. The chiral anomaly on the edge is used to obtain unambiguously the Hall conductance. In resolving the problem of counter-flowing edge modes, we find that the long range Coulomb interactions play a fundamental role. In order to set up a theory for arbitrary ν we use the idea of a two-dimensional network of percolating edge modes. We derive an effective, single mode Luttinger liquid theory for tunneling processes into the edge which yields a continuous tunneling exponent 1/ν. The network approach is also used to re-derive the instanton vacuum theory for plateau transitions.  相似文献

We compute the frequency and magnetic field dependencies of the reflectivity R(omega) in layered superconductors with two alternating intrinsic Josephson junctions with different critical current densities and quasiparticle conductivities for the electric field polarized along the c axis. The parameter alpha describing the electronic compressibility of the layers and the charge coupling of neighboring junctions was extracted for the SmLa1-xSr xCuO (4-delta) superconductor from two independent optical measurements, the fit of the loss function L(omega) at zero magnetic field and the magnetic field dependence of the peak positions in L(omega). The experiments are consistent with a free electron value for alpha.  相似文献
