Anisotropic helical structures in Fabry-Perot (FP) cavities are shown to exhibit unique properties. The FP peaks are unpolarized, consisting of doublets corresponding to Bloch-Lyaponov eigenwaves with increased splitting as the local anisotropy increases and as they become closer to the photonic bandgap. The Bragg-type selective reflection peak existing in a free-cavity sample is inhibited when the helical medium is inside a cavity, and it has no effect on the cavity modes. Hence the unique characteristics are obtained even with a single period of the helix, and consequently thin films of helical liquid crystals can be used to build fast tunable polarization insensitive FP filters.  相似文献

Cholesteric liquid crystals(CLCs) have recently sparked an enormous amount of interest in the development of soft matter materials due to their unique ability to self-organize into a helical supra-molecular architecture and their excellent selective reflection of light based on the Bragg relationship.Nowadays,by the virtue of building the self-organized nanostructures with pitch gradient or non-uniform pitch distribution,extensive work has already been performed to obtain CLC films with a broad reflection band.Based on authors' many years' research experience,this critical review systematically summarizes the physical and optical background of the CLCs with broadband reflection characteristics,methods to obtain broadband reflection of CLCs,as well as the application in the field of intelligent optical modulation materials.Combined with the research status and the advantages in the field,the important basic and applied scientific problems in the research direction are also introduced.  相似文献

We investigated the alignment director of a frustrated cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) confined in a planar cell. Three cells with different confinement ratio (c?=?d/p) (where p is the pitch and d is the cell thickness) are prepared. Under an electric field, the CLC planar texture is transformed into a cholesteric fingerprint (CF). The results showed that CF contrast depends on c. When c?≈?2, CLC stripes are formed by a periodic CF, with a period equal to the CLC pitch. The CF is developed and slowly extended to the whole cell surface along the rubbing direction and the contrast of the grating stripes keeps unchangeable. Yet, the CLC finger borders have a different light intensity. However, when c?≈?1, the CF contrast increases with time. When c?θ between the polarizer and the CFs.  相似文献

In this paper we present a new transmission line microcavity model for vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL). The model is based on optical wave equations and implemented with state-space techniques to predict the lasing modes and analyze the decay properties of the Fabry-Perot (FP) cavities. The model is used to analyze microcavities in both time and frequency domains in terms of material and physical parameters of the lasers, and provide a simple and fast way to optimize the cavity length, reflective mirror and active region of the lasers.  相似文献

The localized optical modes in spiral photonic liquid crystals are theoretically studied for the certainty at the example of chiral liquid crystals (CLCs) for the case of CLC with an anisotropic local absorption. The model adopted here (absence of dielectric interfaces in the structures under investigation) makes it possible to get rid of mixing of polarizations on the surfaces of the CLC layer and of the defect structure and to reduce the corresponding equations to only the equations for light with polarization diffracting in the CLC. The dispersion equations determining connection of the edge mode (EM) and defect mode (DM) frequencies with the CLC layer parameters (anisotropy of local absorption, CLC order parameter) and other parameters of the DMS are obtained. Analytic expressions for the transmission and reflection coefficients of CLC layer and DMS for the case of CLC with an anisotropic local absorption are presented and analyzed. It is shown that the CLC layers with locally anisotropic absorption reduce the EM and DM lifetimes (and increase the lasing threshold) in the way different from the case of CLC with an isotropic local absorption. Due to the Borrmann effect revealing of which is different at the opposite stop-band edges in the case of CLC layers with an anisotropic local absorption the EM life-times for the EM frequencies at the opposite stop-bands edges may be significantly different. The options of experimental observations of the theoretically revealed phenomena are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Slight changes with temperature in the director orientation at the surface of a perfect planar cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) layer, which are precursors of a jump in the pitch of the cholesteric helix, are observed by measuring the temperature dependence of the optical transmission spectra of the layer. The observed changes in the director orientation are described in the framework of the continuum theory of CLCs, supplemented with allowance for the surface anchoring forces. In particular, the angle of deviation of the director at the surface from the alignment direction at the exact temperature of the jump in pitch is expressed in terms of the anchoring potential. Comparative electro-optical measurements have been made on a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) in surface stabilized geometry and confined to an ellipsoidal cavity within a polymer matrix. The static and dynamic electro-optical characteristics were measured for both systems and show qualitatively similar behaviours. A fast switching and important bistability were observed and characterized as a function of the applied electric field strength. The switching time between the two stable states of the surface stabilized cell was found to be longer than that found for the composite films. We argue that the faster switching dynamic of the FLC in cavities is due to the enhance of the rotational mobility of the molecules, probably (and partly) because of the soft anchoring character of the molecules at the cavity walls. Despite numerous efforts, continuous wave (CW) lasing in dye doped, one-dimensional (1D) photonic bandgap cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) structures has not been previously reported, to our knowledge. Here we report on the observation of lasing in such structures under both coherent (laser) and incoherent (LED) CW light excitation. To achieve this effect, we used a 1D-photonic bandgap structure made of a polymer stabilized CLC with a pitch gradient across the cell thickness. A spectral reflectivity profile of such a CLC structure reveals local minima in the area within a photonic stopband and close to it. The realization of lasing pumped by low power CW light sources opens the possibility of all-organic, compact, tunable CW lasers for display and medical applications.  相似文献

A light-responsive cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) mixture is tuned with light and applied DC electric field. Interestingly, the reflection of the CLC is red shifted with UV light and blue shifted with applied DC electric fields. UV light exposure induces a red shift in the reflection of the CLC bandgap by as much as 800 nm from the original spectral position. Spatial variations in pitch (and thus reflection color) are shown to blue shift with applied DC field regardless of the photohistory and restore the notch position or image upon removal of the field. The ability to tune the reflection of the CLC bandgap on demand to the red or blue with multiple stimuli is a never before demonstrated effect that could have potential utility in lasing, optical filtering, or data communication applications.  相似文献

The heterogeneous nucleation of gas bubbles from cavities in a surface in contact with a liquid is a widely recognized phenomenon. This process has previously been theoretically analyzed extensively for a conical crevice, although in practice a wide range of cavity geometries might be expected. The method of analysis originally presented by Atchley and Prosperetti [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 86, 1065-1084 (1989)] for the unstable growth of a gas-liquid interface in a conical crevice is here extended to any axisymmetric cavity geometry and four such different geometries are analyzed. Although the method presented neglects gas transfer, and therefore is most directly suitable for acoustic cavitations, this method is still valuable in comparing the nucleation behavior of different cavity types. It is found that once the interface has emerged outside the cavity, its behavior is determined by the size of the cavity's opening. Given that the behavior of the interface once it is outside the cavity will also be determined by the local flow conditions, the threshold for unstable growth of the interface inside the cavity leading to its emergence is the important value and will determine differences between cavity geometries in practice, as shown in the examples presented.  相似文献

Influence of boundary conditions on optical properties of a layer of cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) has been investigated. In particular, a sample was obtained which is transparent for circularly polarized light incident from one side and gives losses in the transmission spectrum (within nearly 100 nm wide wavelength range) if light is incident from the opposite side, i.e. exhibits optical diode behavior. Two selective reflection bands were detected in the reflection spectrum of the sample. Spectral position of both selective reflection bands and transmission spectrum are shown to be CLC temperature-controllable.  相似文献

采用时域有限差分(FDTD)方法,研究光在含点缺陷(即微腔)和线缺陷(即波导)的光子晶体中的传输特性.计算结果表明,处于光子晶体禁带的光能被局域在光子晶体波导中传输.而具有特定本征共振频率的光子晶体微腔可将在其附近波导中传播的相应频率成份的光下载到微腔中,不同结构的腔可以“下载”不同频率成份的波.以上计算结果,可用于光子晶体上/下载滤波器的设计.  相似文献

Orthoconic antiferroelectric liquid crystals, whose half cone angle is 45°, are of interest in display technology because they are capable of providing greyscale in passively addressing waveform while exhibiting very good contrast. However, orthoconic antiferroelectrics having short pitch are difficult to be aligned, this makes surface stabilized alignment unfeasible. In this case, dynamic behaviour is usually poor, avoiding electronic addressing with standard electronics. In this work, we report the helical pitch measurements of OAFLC mixtures and we compare electrooptical performance of high and low pitch OAFLCs.  相似文献

In this paper the entanglement and the quantum discord (QD) dynamics of two cavities interacting with a common independent reservoir are investigated. Remarkably, it has been proved that the entanglement between two cavities can be transferred to one of the cavities and the reservoir with time evolution. Compared with the dynamics of entanglement, the QD has the similar behavior. It is found that the cavity damping rate can stabilize the entanglement and quantum discord between the cavity and reservoir. We also explore the monogamy of the entanglement and the QD during the interaction of quantum system.  相似文献

We demonstrate by finite-difference time-domain simulations in 2D and 3D that optical cavities in realistic finite photonic crystals have lifetimes and modal volumes that are essentially insensitive to disorder (of various types, including surface disorder and randomized positions), even with unphysically large disorder. A lifetime Q = 10(8) is demonstrated in a 3D single-mode cavity with a half-wavelength mode diameter using only eight vertical periods of a disordered crystal.  相似文献

As part of the international research program on the superconducting cavity for the International Linear Collider (ILC) R&D on the 1.3 GHz low loss superconducting cavities has been carried out at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) since 2005. A design of 1.3 GHz low loss cavity shape was proposed and six single-cell cavities of different niobium material were successfully fabricated with standard technology. In this study our priority was on large grain (LG) cavities. The two LG cavities were treated with complete procedures of surface treatments based on chemical polishing (CP) without electro polishing (EP) at IHEP. The two LG cavities and a fine grain cavity were sent to KEK for vertical testing. All the three cavities reached accelerating gradients higher than 35 MV/m and the maximum gradient of 40.27 MV/m was achieved in the LG cavity. This paper presents the process of the vertical RF tests and the comparison of the LG and fine grain cavities's performance.  相似文献

阐述一种理论模型,讨论共面转换(IPS)模式下横向电场对平面织构胆甾相液晶螺距及扭曲角的影响.利用琼斯矩阵法计算了光正入射情况下未加电场时胆甾相液晶的反射谱.在上述模型基础上,计算了施加电场后胆甾相液晶的反射峰值波长以及反射带宽随场强的变化关系.探讨了忽略锚定与强锚定两种边界条件下横向电场对平面织构胆甾相液晶螺距及反射特性的影响.所得结论在理论上证实:共面转换模式下电场可以调谐胆甾相液晶的反射光颜色,从而为基于电控螺距原理的胆甾相液晶反射式彩色显示方案提供了理论上的依据. 关键词: 胆甾相液晶 电控螺距 共面转换 琼斯矩阵法  相似文献

A miniature Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometric fiber-optic sensor suitable for high-temperature sensing is proposed and demonstrated. The sensor head consists of two FP cavities formed by fusion splicing a short hollow-core fiber and a piece of single-mode fiber at a photonic crystal fiber in series. The reflection spectra of an implemented sensor are measured at several temperatures and analyzed in the spatial frequency domain. The experiment shows that the thermal-optic effect of the cavity material is much more appreciable than its thermal expansion. The temperature measurements up to 1000 degrees C with a step of 50 degrees C confirm that it could be applicable as a high-temperature sensor.  相似文献
