We show that a bi-Lipschitz homogeneous curve in the plane must satisfy the bounded turning condition, and that this is false in higher dimensions. Combined with results of Herron and Mayer this gives several characterizations of such curves in the plane.

We discuss several metric characterizations of convexity of sets in non-smooth finite-dimensional Banach spaces. We describe a setting in which convexity is equivalent to the rotation-invariance of various properties, including almost convexity, radial continuity of the metric projection, and Chebyshevity. One of the tools used is a generalization of norm-smoothness which involves support cones of the unit ball.

We analyze the use of edge finite element methods to approximate Maxwell's equations in a bounded cavity. Using the theory of collectively compact operators, we prove -convergence for the source and eigenvalue problems. This is the first proof of convergence of the eigenvalue problem for general edge elements, and it extends and unifies the theory for both problems. The convergence results are based on the discrete compactness property of edge element due to Kikuchi. We extend the original work of Kikuchi by proving that edge elements of all orders possess this property.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that it is possible to define and compute the index of an isolated critical point for densely defined operators of type acting from a real, reflexive and separable Banach space into This index is defined via a degree theory for such operators which has been recently developed by the authors. The calculation of the index is achieved by the introduction of a special linearization of the nonlinear operator at the critical point. This linearization is a new tool even for continuous everywhere defined operators which are not necessarily Fréchet differentiable. Various cases of operators are considered: unbounded nonlinear operators with unbounded linearization, bounded nonlinear operators with bounded linearization, and operators in Hilbert spaces. Examples and counterexamples are given in 2,$"> illustrating the main results. The associated bifurcation problem for a pair of operators is also considered. The main results of the paper are substantial extensions and improvements of the classical results of Leray and Schauder (for continuous operators of Leray-Schauder type) as well as the results of Skrypnik (for bounded demicontinuous mappings of type Applications to nonlinear Dirichlet problems have appeared elsewhere.

We study the local solvability of the tangential Cauchy-Riemann equation on an open neighborhood of a point when is a generic -concave manifold of real codimension in , where . Our method is to first derive a homotopy formula for in when is the intersection of with a strongly pseudoconvex domain. The homotopy formula gives a local solution operator for any -closed form on without shrinking. We obtain Hölder and estimates up to the boundary for the solution operator. RÉSUMÉ.
