On counting subring-submodules of free modules over finite commutative frobenius rings

Let \(\texttt {R}\) be a finite commutative Frobenius ring and \(\texttt {S}\) a Galois extension of \(\texttt {R}\) of degree m. For positive integers k and \(k'\), we determine the number of free \(\texttt {S}\)-submodules \(\mathcal {B}\) of \(\texttt {S}^\ell \) with the property \(k=\texttt {rank}_\texttt {S}(\mathcal {B})\) and \(k'=\texttt {rank}_\texttt {R}(\mathcal {B}\cap \texttt {R}^\ell )\). This corrects the wrong result (Bill in Linear Algebr Appl 22:223–233, 1978, Theorem 6) which was given in the language of codes over finite fields.     

Remarks on Hilbert series of graded modules over polynomial rings

In this article we discuss a result on formal Laurent series and some of its implications for Hilbert series of finitely generated graded modules over standard-graded polynomial rings: For any integer Laurent function of polynomial type with non-negative values the associated formal Laurent series can be written as a sum of rational functions of the form ${\frac{Q_j(t)}{(1-t)^j}}$ , where the numerators are Laurent polynomials with non–negative integer coefficients. Hence any such series is the Hilbert series of some finitely generated graded module over a suitable polynomial ring ${\mathbb{F}[X_1 , \ldots , X_n]}$ . We give two further applications, namely an investigation of the maximal depth of a module with a given Hilbert series and a characterization of Laurent polynomials which may occur as numerator in the presentation of a Hilbert series as a rational function with a power of (1 ? t) as denominator.     

Stably free modules over rings of Laurent polynomials

Let Φ be a finite group and let A be the group algebra of a free abelian group over a field k. We show that, in general, A[Φ] admits nontrivial stably free modules. By contrast, if A is the group algebra of a finitely generated free group then A[Φ] has stably free cancellation.     

On pure-injective modules over pullback rings

Let R be the pullback, in the sense of [9], of two Dedekind domains. We describe all those indecomposable pure-injective R-modules M with finite-dimensional top, that is, such that M/Rad(R)M is finite dimensional over R/Rad(R).     

n-gr-coherent rings and Gorenstein graded modules

Let R be a graded ring and n ? 1 be an integer. We introduce and study the notions of Gorenstein n-FP-gr-injective and Gorenstein n-gr-flat modules by using the notion of special finitely presented graded modules. On n-gr-coherent rings, we investigate the relationships between Gorenstein n-FP-gr-injective and Gorenstein n-gr-flat modules. Among other results, we prove that any graded module in R-gr (or gr-R) admits a Gorenstein n-FP-gr-injective (or Gorenstein n-gr-flat) cover and preenvelope, respectively.

On finitely generated modules over quasi-Euclidean rings

Let R be a unital commutative ring, and let M be an R-module that is generated by k elements but not less. Let \(\text {E}_n(R)\) be the subgroup of \(\text {GL}_n(R)\) generated by the elementary matrices. In this paper we study the action of \(\text {E}_n(R)\) by matrix multiplication on the set \(\text {Um}_n(M)\) of unimodular rows of M of length \(n \ge k\). Assuming R is moreover Noetherian and quasi-Euclidean, e.g., R is a direct product of finitely many Euclidean rings, we show that this action is transitive if \(n > k\). We also prove that \(\text {Um}_k(M) /\text {E}_k(R)\) is equipotent with the unit group of \(R/\mathfrak {a}_1\) where \(\mathfrak {a}_1\) is the first invariant factor of M. These results encompass the well-known classification of Nielsen non-equivalent generating tuples in finitely generated Abelian groups.     

On the equivalence of codes over rings and modules

In light of the result by Wood that codes over every finite Frobenius ring satisfy a version of the MacWilliams equivalence theorem, a proof for the converse is considered. A strategy is proposed that would reduce the question to problems dealing only with matrices over finite fields. Using this strategy, it is shown, among other things, that any left MacWilliams basic ring is Frobenius. The results and techniques in the paper also apply to related problems dealing with codes over modules.     

On a duality of modules over valuation rings

On Schur classes for modules over group rings
