In this study, we introduce an actual time-dependent and job-dependent learning effect into single-machine scheduling problems. We show that the complexity results of the makespan minimization problem and the sum of weighted completion time minimization problem are all NP-hard. The complexity result of the maximum lateness minimization problem is NP-hard in the strong sense. We also provide three special cases which can be solved by polynomial time algorithms.

This paper introduces a new time-dependent learning effect model into a single-machine scheduling problem. The time-dependent learning effect means that the processing time of a job is assumed to be a function of total normal processing time of jobs scheduled in front of it. In most related studies, the actual job processing time is assumed to be a function of its scheduled position when the learning effect is considered in the scheduling problem. In this paper, the actual processing time of a job is assumed to be proportionate to the length and position of the already scheduled jobs. It shows that the addressed problem remains polynomially solvable for the objectives, i.e., minimization of the total completion time and minimization of the total weighted completion time. It also shows that the shortest processing time (SPT) rule provides the optimum sequence for the addressed problem.

Scheduling with a position-weighted learning effect
In general, human learning takes time to build up, which results from a worker gaining experience from repeating similar operations over time. In the early stage of processing a given set of similar jobs, a worker is not familiar with the operations, so his learning effect on the jobs scheduled early is not apparent. On the other hand, when the worker has gained experience in processing the jobs his learning improves. So a worker’s learning effect on a job depends not only on the total processing time of the jobs that he has processed but also on the job position. In this paper we introduce a position-weighted learning effect model for scheduling problems. We provide optimal solutions for the single-machine problems to minimize the makespan and the total completion time, and an optimal solution for the single-machine problem to minimize the total tardiness under an agreeable situation. We also consider two special cases of the flowshop problem.

In this paper we consider the single-machine scheduling problems with a sum-of-actual-processing-time-based learning effect. By the sum-of-actual-processing-time-based learning effect, we mean that the processing time of a job is defined by a function of the sum of the actual processing time of the already processed jobs. We show that even with the introduction of the sum-of-actual-processing-time-based learning effect to job processing times, the makespan minimization problem, the total completion time minimization problem, the total completion time square minimization problem, and some special cases of the total weighted completion time minimization problem and the maximum lateness minimization problem remain polynomially solvable, respectively.

In a recent paper, Lee and Wu [W.-C. Lee, C.-C. Wu, A note on single-machine group scheduling problems with position-based learning effect, Appl. Math. Model. 33 (2009) 2159–2163] proposed a new group scheduling learning model where the learning effect not only depends on the job position, but also depends on the group position. They investigate the makespan and the total completion time minimization problems on a single-machine. As for the total completion time minimization problem, they assumed that the numbers of jobs in each group are the same and the group normal setup and the job normal processing times are agreeable. Under the assumption conditions, they showed that the total completion time minimization problem can be optimally solved in polynomial time solution. However, the assumption conditions for the total completion time minimization problem do not reflect actual practice in many manufacturing processes. Hence, in this note, we propose other agreeable conditions and show that the total completion time minimization problem remains polynomially solvable under the agreeable conditions.

In this paper, we consider the single-machine scheduling problems with a time-dependent deterioration. By the time-dependent deterioration, we mean that the processing time of a job is defined by an increasing function of total normal processing time of jobs in front of it in the sequence. The objective is to minimize the total completion time. We develop a mixed integer programming formulation for the problem. The complexity status of this problem remains open. Hence, we use the smallest normal processing time (SPT) first rule as a heuristic algorithm for the general cases and analyze its worst-case error bound. Two heuristic algorithms utilize the V-shaped property are also proposed to solve the problem. Computational results are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms.

We introduce a general transformation of parallel-machine time-dependent scheduling problems with critical lines. Using the transformation we define the class of equivalent time-dependent scheduling problems. We show that given an initial parallel-machine time-dependent scheduling problem with linear job processing times and the total weighted starting time criterion, the problem can be transformed in a unique way into another problem of this type in such a way that both these problems are mutually dual. We prove that a schedule is optimal for the initial problem if and only if the schedule constructed by this transformation is optimal for the transformed problem. The presented results explain remarkable similarities between different time-dependent scheduling problems and simplify the proofs of properties of such problems.

In this paper we consider single-machine group scheduling problems with effects of learning and deterioration at the same time. By effects of learning and deterioration, we mean that the group setup times are general linear functions of their starting times and the jobs in the same group have general position-dependent and time-dependent learning effects. The objective of scheduling problems is to minimize the makespan and the sum of completion times, respectively. We show that the problems remain solvable in polynomial time under the proposed model.

The paper deals with the single machine scheduling problems with a time-dependent learning effect and deteriorating jobs. By the effects of time-dependent learning and deterioration, we mean that the processing time of a job is defined by function of its starting time and total normal processing time of jobs in front of it in the sequence. It is shown that even with the introduction of a time-dependent learning effect and deteriorating jobs to job processing times, the single machine makespan minimization problem remain polynomially solvable. But for the total completion time minimization problem, the classical shortest processing time first rule or largest processing time first rule cannot give an optimal solution.

This paper considers the problems of scheduling with the effect of learning on a single-machine under group technology assumption. We propose a new learning model where the job actual processing time is linear combinations of the scheduled position of the job and the sum of the normal processing time of jobs already processed. We show that the makespan minimization problem is polynomially solvable. We also prove that the total completion time minimization problem with the group availability assumption remains polynomially solvable under agreeable conditions.

In this paper we introduce a new model of joint start-time dependent learning and position dependent aging effects into single-machine scheduling problems. The machine may need maintenance to improve its production efficiency. The objectives are to find jointly the optimal maintenance position and the optimal sequence such that the makespan, the total completion time, and the total absolute deviation of completion times (TADC) are minimized. We also aim to determine jointly the optimal maintenance position, the optimal due-window size and location, and the optimal sequence to minimize the sum of earliness, tardiness and due-window related costs function. We show that all the studied problems can be optimally solved by polynomial time algorithms.

In this note we consider some single-machine scheduling problems with decreasing time-dependent job processing times. Decreasing time-dependent job processing times means that its processing time is a non-increasing function of its execution start time. We present polynomial solutions for the sum of squared completion times minimization problem, and the sum of earliness penalties minimization problem subject to no tardy jobs, respectively. We also study two resource constrained scheduling problems under the same decreasing time-dependent job processing times model and present algorithms to find their optimal solutions.

Scheduling with deteriorating jobs and learning effects has been widely studied. However, multi-agent scheduling with simultaneous considerations of deteriorating jobs and learning effects has hardly been considered until now. In view of this, we consider a two-agent single-machine scheduling problem involving deteriorating jobs and learning effects simultaneously. In the proposed model, given a schedule, we assume that the actual processing time of a job of the first agent is a function of position-based learning while the actual processing time of a job of the second agent is a function of position-based deterioration. The objective is to minimize the total weighted completion time of the jobs of the first agent with the restriction that no tardy job is allowed for the second agent. We develop a branch-and-bound and several simulated annealing algorithms to solve the problem. Computational results show that the proposed algorithms are efficient in producing near-optimal solutions.

In this study we consider unrelated parallel machines scheduling problems with learning effect and deteriorating jobs, in which the actual processing time of a job is a function of joint time-dependent deterioration and position-dependent learning. The objective is to determine the jobs assigned to corresponding each machine and the corresponding optimal schedule to minimize a cost function containing total completion (waiting) time, total absolute differences in completion (waiting) times and total machine load. If the number of machines is a given constant, we show that the problems can be solved in polynomial time under the time-dependent deterioration and position-dependent learning model.

We design a fast ascent direction algorithm for the Lagrangian dual problem of the single-machine scheduling problem of minimizing total weighted completion time subject to precedence constraints. We show that designing such an algorithm is relatively simple if a scheduling problem is formulated in terms of the job completion times rather than as an 0–1 linear program. Also, we show that upon termination of such an ascent direction algorithm we get a dual decomposition of the original problem, which can be exploited to develop approximative and enumerative approaches for it. Computational results exhibit that in our application the ascent direction leads to good Lagrangian lower and upper bounds.
