choice number of a graph G is the minimum integer k such that for every assignment of a set S(v) of k colors to every vertex v of G, there is a proper coloring of G that assigns to each vertex v a color from S(v). It is shown that the choice number of the random graph G(n, p(n)) is almost surely whenever . A related result for pseudo-random graphs is proved as well. By a special case of this result, the choice number (as well as the chromatic number) of any graph on n vertices with minimum degree at least in which no two distinct vertices have more than common neighbors is at most . An L(2,1)-labeling of a graph G is an assignment of nonnegative integers to the vertices of G so that adjacent vertices get labels at least distance two apart and vertices at distance two get distinct labels. A hole is an unused integer within the range of integers used by the labeling. The lambda number of a graph G, denoted λ(G), is the minimum span taken over all L(2,1)-labelings of G. The hole index of a graph G, denoted ρ(G), is the minimum number of holes taken over all L(2,1)-labelings with span exactly λ(G). Georges and Mauro [On the structure of graphs with non-surjective L(2,1)-labelings, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 19 (2005) 208-223] conjectured that if G is an r-regular graph and ρ(G)?1, then ρ(G) must divide r. We show that this conjecture does not hold by providing an infinite number of r-regular graphs G such that ρ(G) and r are relatively prime integers.  相似文献

Let D(G)=(di,j)n×n denote the distance matrix of a connected graph G with order n, where dij is equal to the distance between vi and vj in G. The largest eigenvalue of D(G) is called the distance spectral radius of graph G, denoted by ?(G). In this paper, some graft transformations that decrease or increase ?(G) are given. With them, for the graphs with both order n and k pendant vertices, the extremal graphs with the minimum distance spectral radius are completely characterized; the extremal graph with the maximum distance spectral radius is shown to be a dumbbell graph (obtained by attaching some pendant edges to each pendant vertex of a path respectively) when 2≤kn−2; for k=1,2,3,n−1, the extremal graphs with the maximum distance spectral radius are completely characterized.  相似文献

Two variations of set intersection representation are investigated and upper and lower bounds on the minimum number of labels with which a graph may be represented are found that hold for almost all graphs. Specifically, if θk(G) is defined to be the minimum number of labels with which G may be represented using the rule that two vertices are adjacent if and only if they share at least k labels, there exist positive constants ck and c′k such that almost every graph G on n vertices satisfies Changing the representation only slightly by defining θ;odd (G) to be the minimum number of labels with which G can be represented using the rule that two vertices are adjacent if and only if they share an odd number of labels results in quite different behavior. Namely, almost every graph G satisfies Furthermore, the upper bound on θodd(G) holds for every graph. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

An L(2,1)-labeling of graph G is an integer labeling of the vertices in V(G) such that adjacent vertices receive labels which differ by at least two, and vertices which are distance two apart receive labels which differ by at least one. The λ-number of G is the minimum span taken over all L(2,1)-labelings of G. In this paper, we consider the λ-numbers of generalized Petersen graphs. By introducing the notion of a matched sum of graphs, we show that the λ-number of every generalized Petersen graph is bounded from above by 9. We then show that this bound can be improved to 8 for all generalized Petersen graphs with vertex order >12, and, with the exception of the Petersen graph itself, improved to 7 otherwise.  相似文献

The Wiener index of a graph G is defined as W(G)=∑ u,v d G (u,v), where d G (u,v) is the distance between u and v in G and the sum goes over all the pairs of vertices. In this paper, we first present the 6 graphs with the first to the sixth smallest Wiener index among all graphs with n vertices and k cut edges and containing a complete subgraph of order nk; and then we construct a graph with its Wiener index no less than some integer among all graphs with n vertices and k cut edges.  相似文献

We present a new condition on the degree sums of a graph that implies the existence of a long cycle. Let c(G) denote the length of a longest cycle in the graph G and let m be any positive integer. Suppose G is a 2-connected graph with vertices x1,…,xn and edge set E that satisfies the property that, for any two integers j and k with j < k, xjxk ? E, d(xi) ? j and d(xk) ? K - 1, we have (1) d(xi) + d(xk ? m if j + k ? n and (2) if j + k < n, either m ? n or d(xj) + d(xk) ? min(K + 1,m). Then c(G) ? min(m, n). This result unifies previous results of J.C. Bermond and M. Las Vergnas, respectively.  相似文献

Let G be a connected claw-free graph on n vertices. Let ς3(G) be the minimum degree sum among triples of independent vertices in G. It is proved that if ς3(G) ≥ n − 3 then G is traceable or else G is one of graphs Gn each of which comprises three disjoint nontrivial complete graphs joined together by three additional edges which induce a triangle K3. Moreover, it is shown that for any integer k ≥ 4 there exists a positive integer ν(k) such that if ς3(G) ≥ nk, n > ν(k) and G is non-traceable, then G is a factor of a graph Gn. Consequently, the problem HAMILTONIAN PATH restricted to claw-free graphs G = (V, E) (which is known to be NP-complete) has linear time complexity O(|E|) provided that ς3(G) ≥ . This contrasts sharply with known results on NP-completeness among dense graphs. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 27: 75–86, 1998  相似文献

Let G(n, k) denote the graph of the Johnson Scheme J(n, k), i.e., the graph whose vertices are all k-subsets of a fixed n-set, with two vertices adjacent if and only if their intersection is of size k ? 1. It is known that G(n, k) is a distance regular graph with diameter k. Much work has been devoted to the question of whether a distance regular graph with the parameters of G(n, k) must isomorphic to G(n, k). In this paper, this question is settled affirmatively for n ≥ 20. In fact the result is proved with weaker conditions.  相似文献

The Merrifield-Simmons index of a graph is defined as the total number of its independent sets, including the empty set. Denote by G(n,k) the set of connected graphs with n vertices and k cut vertices. In this paper, we characterize the graphs with the maximum and minimum Merrifield-Simmons index, respectively, among all graphs in G(n,k) for all possible k values.  相似文献

A near perfect matching is a matching saturating all but one vertex in a graph. Let G be a connected graph. If any n independent edges in G are contained in a near perfect matching where n is a positive integer and n(|V(G)|-2)/2, then G is said to be defect n-extendable. If deleting any k vertices in G where k|V(G)|-2, the remaining graph has a perfect matching, then G is a k-critical graph. This paper first shows that the connectivity of defect n-extendable graphs can be any integer. Then the characterizations of defect n-extendable graphs and (2k+1)-critical graphs using M-alternating paths are presented.  相似文献

Given a graph G and an integer k, two players take turns coloring the vertices of G one by one using k colors so that neighboring vertices get different colors. The first player wins iff at the end of the game all the vertices of G are colored. The game chromatic number χg(G) is the minimum k for which the first player has a winning strategy. In this study, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of this parameter for a random graph Gn,p. We show that with high probability, the game chromatic number of Gn,p is at least twice its chromatic number but, up to a multiplicative constant, has the same order of magnitude. We also study the game chromatic number of random bipartite graphs. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct. Alg., 2008  相似文献

If G is a graph on n vertices and r ≥ 2, we let mr(G) denote the minimum number of complete multipartite subgraphs, with r or fewer parts, needed to partition the edge set, E(G). In determining mr(G), we may assume that no two vertices of G have the same neighbor set. For such reducedgraphs G, we prove that mr(G) ≥ log2 (n + r − 1)/r. Furthermore, for each k ≥ 0 and r ≥ 2, there is a unique reduced graph G = G(r, k) with mr(G) = k for which equality holds. We conclude with a short proof of the known eigenvalue bound mr(G) ≥ max{n+ (G, n(G)/(r − 1)}, and show that equality holds if G = G(r, k). © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Cartesian products of complete graphs are known as Hamming graphs. Using embeddings into Cartesian products of quotient graphs we characterize subgraphs, induced subgraphs, and isometric subgraphs of Hamming graphs. For instance, a graph G is an induced subgraph of a Hamming graph if and only if there exists a labeling of E(G) fulfilling the following two conditions: (i) edges of a triangle receive the same label; (ii) for any vertices u and v at distance at least two, there exist two labels which both appear on any induced u, υ‐path. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Distance labeling schemes are schemes that label the vertices of a graph with short labels in such a way that the distance between any two vertices u and v can be determined efficiently (e.g., in constant or logarithmic time) by merely inspecting the labels of u and v, without using any other information. Similarly, routing labeling schemes are schemes that label the vertices of a graph with short labels in such a way that given the label of a source vertex and the label of a destination, it is possible to compute efficiently (e.g., in constant or logarithmic time) the port number of the edge from the source that heads in the direction of the destination. In this paper we show that the three major classes of non-positively curved plane graphs enjoy such distance and routing labeling schemes using O(log2n) bit labels on n-vertex graphs. In constructing these labeling schemes interesting metric properties of those graphs are employed.  相似文献

For a simple graph G?=?(𝒱, ?) with vertex-set 𝒱?=?{1,?…?,?n}, let 𝒮(G) be the set of all real symmetric n-by-n matrices whose graph is G. We present terminology linking established as well as new results related to the minimum rank problem, with spectral properties in graph theory. The minimum rank mr(G) of G is the smallest possible rank over all matrices in 𝒮(G). The rank spread r v (G) of G at a vertex v, defined as mr(G)???mr(G???v), can take values ??∈?{0,?1,?2}. In general, distinct vertices in a graph may assume any of the three values. For ??=?0 or 1, there exist graphs with uniform r v (G) (equal to the same integer at each vertex v). We show that only for ??=?0, will a single matrix A in 𝒮(G) determine when a graph has uniform rank spread. Moreover, a graph G, with vertices of rank spread zero or one only, is a λ-core graph for a λ-optimal matrix A in 𝒮(G). We also develop sufficient conditions for a vertex of rank spread zero or two and a necessary condition for a vertex of rank spread two.  相似文献

With the help of the Graffiti system, Fajtlowicz conjectured around 1992 that the average distance between two vertices of a connected graph G is at most half the maximum order of an induced bipartite subgraph of G, denoted α2(G). We prove a strengthening of this conjecture by showing that the average distance between two vertices of a connected graph G is at most half the maximum order of an induced forest, denoted F(G). Moreover, we characterize the graphs maximizing the average distance among all graphs G having a fixed number of vertices and a fixed value of F(G) or α2(G). Finally, we conjecture that the average distance between two vertices of a connected graph is at most half the maximum order of an induced linear forest (where a linear forest is a union of paths). © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The average distance μ(G) of a graph G is the average among the distances between all pairs of vertices in G. For n ≥ 2, the average Steiner n-distance μn(G) of a connected graph G is the average Steiner distance over all sets of n vertices in G. It is shown that for a connected weighted graph G, μn(G) ≤ μk(G) + μn+1−k(G) where 2 ≤ kn − 1. The range for the average Steiner n-distance of a connected graph G in terms of n and |V(G)| is established. Moreover, for a tree T and integer k, 2 ≤ kn − 1, it is shown that μn(T) ≤ (n/kk(T) and the range for μn(T) in terms of n and |V(T)| is established. Two efficient algorithms for finding the average Steiner n-distance of a tree are outlined. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this paper, we study queue layouts of iterated line directed graphs. A k-queue layout of a directed graph consists of a linear ordering of the vertices and an assignment of each arc to exactly one of the k queues so that any two arcs assigned to the same queue do not nest. The queuenumber of a directed graph is the minimum number of queues required for a queue layout of the directed graph. We present upper and lower bounds on the queuenumber of an iterated line directed graph Lk(G) of a directed graph G. Our upper bound depends only on G and is independent of the number of iterations k. Queue layouts can be applied to three-dimensional drawings. From the results on the queuenumber of Lk(G), it is shown that for any fixed directed graph G, Lk(G) has a three-dimensional drawing with O(n) volume, where n is the number of vertices in Lk(G). These results are also applied to specific families of iterated line directed graphs such as de Bruijn, Kautz, butterfly, and wrapped butterfly directed graphs. In particular, the queuenumber of k-ary butterfly directed graphs is determined if k is odd.  相似文献
