This paper presents an exact solution for a simply-supported and laminated anisotropic cylindrical shell strip with imperfect bonding at the off-axis elastic layer interfaces and with attached anisotropic piezoelectric actuator and sensor subjected to transverse loading. In this research, the imperfect interface conditions are described in terms of linear relations between the interface tractions in the normal and tangential directions, and the respective discontinuities in displacements. The solution for an elastic (or piezoelectric) layer of the smart laminated cylindrical shell strip is obtained in terms of the six-dimensional (or eight-dimensional) pseudo-Stroh formalism, solution for multilayered system is then derived based on the transfer matrix method. Finally, a numerical example is presented to demonstrate the effect of imperfect interface on the static response of the smart laminated cylindrical shell. The derived solutions can serve as benchmark results to assess various approximate shell theories and numerical methods.

A constitutive model for composite laminated plates with the damage effect of the intra-layers and inter-laminar interface is presented. The model is based on the general six-degrees-of-freedom plate theory, the discontinuity of displacement on the interfaces are depicted by three shape functions, which are formulated according to solutions satisfying three equilibrium equations, By using the variation principle, the three-dimensional non-linear equilibrium differential equations of the laminated plates with two different damage models are derived. Then, considering a simply supported laminated plate with damage, an analytical solution is presented using finite difference method to obtain the inter-laminar stresses.

This paper studies the reflection and transmission of two dimensional quasi P wave incident at an imperfect interface between two dissimilar Functionally Graded Piezoelectric Materials (FGPM) half-spaces. The imperfect bonding behavior between the two considered half-spaces is described by the interfacial imperfections. The imperfection is characterized by the normal stiffness and tangential stiffness using the linear spring model. These interface parameters (i.e normal stiffness and tangential stiffness) are dependent on the elastic properties of interphase. Secular equations have been derived analytically for both the half-spaces. Different cases of imperfect interfaces namely perfect interface, slip interface, weak bonding interface and unbounded interface have been assumed and discussed. Influence of material gradients on the reflection and transmission coefficients (RTC’s) have been inflicted graphically for all the four considered interface conditions. Further, a comparative study of the RTC’s with respect to the incident angle has been carried out for the different cases of imperfections. The obtained results may be useful for measuring imperfection at the interface and designing of SAW devices.

The acoustic behavior of double-walled laminated composite panels consisting of two porous and air gap middle layers is studied within the classical laminated plate theory (CLPT). Thus, viscous and inertia coupling in a dynamic equation, as well as stress transfer, thermal and elastic coupling of porous material ave based on the Biot theory. In addition, the wave equations are extracted according to the vibration equation of composite layers. The transmission loss (TL) of the structure is then calculated by solving these equations simultaneously. Statistical energy analysis (SEA) is developed to divide the structure into specific subsystems, and power transmission is extracted with balancing power flow equations of the subsystems. Comparison between the present work and the results reported elsewhere shows excellent agreement. The results also indicate that, although favorable enhancement is seen in noise control particularly at high frequencies, the corresponding parameters associated with fluid phase and solid phase of the porous layer are important on TL according to the boundary condition interfaces. Finally, the influence of composite material and stacking sequence on power transmission is discussed.

A strategy for the mixed-dimensional coupling of finite shell elements and 3D boundary elements is presented. The stiffness formulation for the boundary element domain is generated by the 3D symmetric Galerkin boundary element method and thus can be assembled to the global finite element formulation. Based on the equality of work at the coupling interface, coupling equations in an integral sense are derived for curved coupling interfaces and formulated as multipoint constraints in terms of kinematic quantities. Several examples show the highly accurate results compared to a strict kinematic coupling technique.

Imperfect bonding between constituents is studied where displacements, electric and magnetic static potentials are considered to have a jump proportional to the normal component of the mechanical traction, electric displacement and magnetic flux. This condition may model various interface damages or the thin glue layer between two adjacent phases. They are termed as the mechanically compliant, dielectrically weakly capacitance and magnetically weakly inductance at the interface. It is shown that while the more imperfect the interface is, the overall properties become weaker, such as longitudinal shear stiffness, out-of-plane piezoelectric coupling, and magnetoelectric coupling. Out-of-plane piezomagnetic coupling, transverse dielectric permittivity and transverse dielectric permeability exhibit no influence by imperfect bonding. The imperfect interface proposed is mimicked by the springs, capacitors and inductances for the mechanical, electric and magnetic interaction between the phases and are highly sensitive to the interphase properties. The results are compared mainly with the self consistent model reported in the literature and good agreements are shown.

The axial decay of Saint-Venant end effects is investigated for anti-plane shear deformations of semi-infinite generally laminated anisotropic strips. Imperfect bonding conditions are imposed at the interfaces. The analytical approach, using a displacement field which decays exponentially in the axial direction, gives rise to a transcendental equation for the real eigenvalues. The decay rate for the stresses is given in terms of the smallest positive eigenvalue. Laminated strips with periodic layout are then considered. In the presence of imperfect bonding, the effective shear elastic moduli, computed through a homogenization method, depend on the total number of slipping interfaces in the laminate. Numerical examples confirm that the decay lengths computed with effective shear moduli represent the asymptotic values (for an increasing number of layers) for those of periodically laminated strips. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

In the present work, we propose and analyse an efficient iterative coupling method for a dimensionally heterogeneous problem. We consider the case of a 2D Laplace equation with non‐symmetric boundary conditions coupled with a corresponding 1D Laplace equation. We first show how to obtain the 1D model from the 2D one by integration along one direction, by analogy with the link between shallow water equations and the Navier–Stokes system. Then we focus on the design of a Schwarz‐like iterative coupling method. We discuss the choice of boundary conditions at coupling interfaces. We prove the convergence of such algorithms and give some theoretical results related to the choice of the location of the coupling interface, and to the control of the difference between a global 2D reference solution and the 2D coupled solution. These theoretical results are illustrated numerically. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the problem of two circular inclusions with circumferentially inhomogeneously imperfect interfaces embedded in an infinite matrix in plane elastostatics. Infinite series form solutions to this problem are derived by applying complex variable techniques. The numerical results demonstrate that the interface imperfection, interface inhomogeneity, and interaction among neighboring inclusions (fibers) will exert a significant influence on the stresses along the interfaces and average stresses within the inclusions.

This paper presents a nonlinear model for cross-ply piezoelastic laminated plates containing the damage effect of the intralayer materials and interlaminar interfaces. The model is based on the general six-degrees-of-freedom plate theory, the discontinuity of displacement, and electric potential on the interfaces are depicted by three shape functions, which are formulated according to solutions about three equilibrium equations and conservation of charge. By using the Hamilton variation principle, the three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic equations of piezoelastic laminated plates with damage are presented. Then using the finite difference method and the Newmark scheme, an analytical solution is presented. In numerical examples, the effects of different damage models, damage evolution, amplitude and frequency of electric loads on the nonlinear dynamic response of piezoelectric laminated plate with interfacial imperfections are investigated.

The objective of this contribution is to develop a thermodynamically consistent theory for general imperfect coherent interfaces in view of their thermomechanical behavior and to establish a unified computational framework to model all classes of such interfaces using the finite element method. Conventionally, imperfect interfaces with respect to their thermal behavior are often restricted to being either highly conducting (HC) or lowly conducting (LC) also known as Kapitza. The interface model here is general imperfect in the sense that it allows for a jump of the temperature as well as for a jump of the normal heat flux across the interface. Clearly, in extreme cases, the current model simplifies to HC and LC interfaces. A new characteristic of the general imperfect interface is that the interface temperature is an independent degree of freedom and, in general, is not a function of only temperatures across the interface. The interface temperature, however, must be computed using a new interface material parameter, i.e., the sensitivity. It is shown that according to the second law, the interface temperature may not necessarily be the average of (or even between) the temperatures across the interface. In particular, even if the temperature jump at the interface vanishes, the interface temperature may be different from the temperatures across the interface. This finding allows for a better, and somewhat novel, understanding of HC interfaces. That is, a HC interface implies, but is not implied by, the vanishing temperature jump across the interface. The problem is formulated such that all types of interfaces are derived from a general imperfect interface model, and therefore, we establish a unified finite element framework to model all classes of interfaces for general transient problems. Full details of the novel numerical scheme are provided. Key features of the problem are then elucidated via a series of three-dimensional numerical examples. Finally, we recall since the influence of interfaces on the overall response of a body increases as the scale of the problem decreases, this contribution has certain applications to nano-composites and also thermal interface materials.

The proposed study aims to derive an imperfect interface model which couples finite strain and damaging. The governing equations are obtained via an asymptotic approach within the finite strain theory. Theoretical findings have been numerically validated within an original application to brick/mortar interfaces in masonry walls in shear loading conditions.

Dislocation mobility and stability in nanocrystals and electronic materials are influenced by the material composition and interface conditions. Its mobility and stability then affect the mechanical behaviors of the composites. In this paper, we first address, in detail, the problem of a screw dislocation located in an annular coating layer which is imperfectly bonded to the inner circular inhomogeneity and to the outer unbounded matrix. Both the inhomogeneity-coating interface and coating-matrix interface are modeled by a linear spring with vanishing thickness to account for the possible damage occurring on the interface. An analytic solution in series form is derived by means of complex variable method, with all the unknown constants being determined explicitly. The solution is then applied to the study of the dislocation mobility and stability due to its interaction with the two imperfect interfaces. The most interesting finding is that when the middle coating layer is more compliant than both the inner inhomogeneity and the outer unbounded matrix and when the interface rigidity parameters for the two imperfect interfaces are greater than certain values, one stable and two unstable equilibrium positions can exist for the dislocation. Furthermore, under certain conditions an equilibrium position, which can be either stable or unstable (i.e., a saddle point), can exist, which has never been observed in previous studies. Results for a screw dislocation interacting with two parallel straight imperfect interfaces are also presented as the limiting case where the radius of the inner inhomogeneity approaches infinity while the thickness of the coating layer is fixed.

We derive upper and lower bounds for the torsional rigidity of cylindrical shafts with arbitrary cross-section containing a number of fibers with circular cross-section. Each fiber may have different constituent materials with different radius. At the interfaces between the fibers and the host matrix two kinds of imperfect interfaces are considered: one which models a thin interphase of low shear modulus and one which models a thin interphase of high shear modulus. Both types of interface will be characterized by an interface parameter which measures the stiffness of the interface. The exact expressions for the upper and lower bounds of the composite shaft depend on the constituent shear moduli, the absolute sizes and locations of the fibers, interface parameters, and the cross-sectional shape of the host shaft. Simplified expressions are also deduced for shafts with perfect bonding interfaces and for shafts with circular cross-section. The effects of the imperfect bonding are illustrated for a circular shaft containing a non-centered fiber. We find that when an additional constraint between the constituent properties of the phases is fulfilled for circular shafts, the upper and lower bounds will coincide. In the latter situation, the fibers are neutral inclusions under torsion and the bounds recover the previously known exact torsional rigidity.

Semi-analytical solutions for bending and free vibration of composite laminated plates have been derived based on three-dimensional elasticity theory using a newly developed hybrid analysis, which perfectly combines the state space approach (SSA) and the technique of differential quadrature (DQ). The thickness direction of laminates is selected as the transfer direction in SSA, and the DQ technique is employed to discretize the in-plane domains. This actualizes the transformation of the original partial differential equations into a state equation consisting of first-order ordinary differential equations. In particular, the use of DQ technique makes ease of the treatment of various boundary conditions, which cannot be considered in the conventional exact SSA. To avoid numerical instabilities in the conventional transfer matrix method, artificial interfaces are introduced to divide each layer into several sub-layers to reduce the transfer distance and the joint coupling matrices are established according to the continuity conditions at actual and artificial interfaces to implement the global analysis. Comprehensive numerical examples are preformed to validate the present hybrid method. Effects of some parameters on mechanical properties of the laminates are discussed.
