The modification of the radiative decay rate of a source atom embedded in a uniform, isotropic dielectric is calculated to first order in the density of the dielectric atoms using a microscopic approach. In contrast to the recent results of Crenshaw and Bowden [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 1851 (2000)]], the decay rate is found to be consistent with macroscopic theories based on quantization of the field in the dielectric. 相似文献

We give a formulation of surface dielectric response in a local LCAO or Wannier representation. It is shown that this representation allows for a practical solution of the response integral equation and thus makes possible an explicit and self-consistent calculation of the nonlocal RPA response function ?-1. The formulation takes into account lattice potential effects and is therefore particularly suited for investigations of surface dielectric response and screening in transition metals, semiconductors and insulators. We present model calculations of charge densities induced in a metal thin film by localized perturbations in the surface region. It is demonstrated that “surface effects”, resulting from differences in the effective atomic potential for different layers, must be included in calculations of surface response in systems with tightly bound electrons. 相似文献

We address here the self-consistent calculation of the spin density wave and the charge density wave gap parameters for high-Tc cuprates on the basis of the Hubbard model. In order to describe the experimental observations for the velocity of sound, we consider the phonon coupling to the conduction band in the harmonic approximation and then the expression for the temperature dependent velocity of sound is calculated from the real part of the phonon Green’s function. The effects of the electron–phonon coupling, the frequency of the sound wave, the hole doping concentration, the CDW coupling and the SDW coupling parameters on the sound velocity are investigated in the pure CDW phase as well as in the co-existence phase of the CDW and SDW states. The results are discussed to explain the experimental observations. 相似文献

We develop a theory for the trajectory of an x ray in the presence of a crystal deformation. A set of equations of motion for an x-ray wave packet including the dynamical diffraction is derived, taking into account the Berry phase as a correction to geometrical optics. The trajectory of the wave packet has a shift of the center position due to a crystal deformation. Remarkably, in the vicinity of the Bragg condition, the shift is enhanced by a factor omega/deltaomega (omega: frequency of an x ray, deltaomega: gap frequency induced by the Bragg reflection). Comparison with the conventional dynamical diffraction theory is also made. 相似文献

An experimental and analytical program has been carried out to evaluate sound suppression techniques in ducts that produce refraction effects due to axial velocity gradients. The analytical program employs a computer code based on the method of multiple scales to calculate the influence of axial variations due to slow changes in the cross-sectional area as well as transverse gradients due to the wall boundary layers. Detailed comparisons between the analytical predictions and the experimental measurements have been made. The circumferential variations of pressure amplitudes and phases at several axial positions have been examined in straight and variable area ducts, with hard walls and lined sections, and with and without a mean flow. Reasonable agreement between the theoretical and experimental results has been found. 相似文献

The sound propagation through a gas in the free-molecular regime is studied on the basis of the linearized collisionless Boltzmann equation. The two principal quantities that characterize the sound propagation, namely the phase and amplitude of the perturbation, are determined by taking into account the influence of the receptor. It is shown that at a small distance between the source and the receptor the presence of the last changes qualitatively the sound characteristics. Two phase velocities are introduced: a differential and an integral, which are different in the free molecular regime. 相似文献

First-order perturbation theory is employed to examine sound propagation in flowing media confined by a cylindrical waveguide. The use of perturbation theory allows examination of mode phase-speed changes due to any radially dependent flow w(r) as long as the flow magnitude is sufficiently small. The condition to be fulfilled is satisfied in the flow range: 0-0.3 m/s for the specific values of cylinder radius, ultrasound frequency, and sound speed analyzed in the present work [in the general case, however, the condition in Eq. (1) of the present work must be fulfilled]. This freedom of choice, i.e., the possibility to handle any radial flow profile, is used to analyze two flow profile cases: (1) where w(r) is a linear combination of a laminar flow profile and a flat profile corresponding to turbulent flow, and (2) where w(r) is a linear combination of a laminar flow profile and a more realistic logarithmic-dependent turbulent flow profile. In both cases, it is shown that large errors may result in ultrasound flow measurements if several modes are excited by the transmitting transducer, and that a logarithmic flow profile in the turbulent regime leads to somewhat larger measurement errors at high flow values as compared to assuming a simple flat profile in the turbulent regime. 相似文献

The susceptibility of a two-level system coupled to a phonon heat bath is calculated by setting up its equation of motion and expanding the memory function (or self energy) and the inhomogeneity to second order in the coupling potential. Averaging over disorder yields attenuation and variation with temperature of sound velocity, which are compared to previous results obtained in the framework of the Bloch equations. We review the current theory of intrinsic dielectric loss, that is the loss in a perfect crystal due to anharmonic interaction of a.c. electric field with the phonon system of the crystal. Both ordinary dielectrics and displacive ferroelectrics are considered. The theory predicts dependence of the loss on frequency ω and temperature T. This dependence is very sensitive to the symmetry of the crystal. For ordinary dielectrics, the results are presented and tabulated for all 32 symmetry groups, except for non-symmorphic groups. The existing experimental date are analysed and explained on the basis of the theory. 相似文献

The exact solution for the transverse (i.e. in the direction perpendicular to the director axis) component α⊥(ω) of a nematic liquid crystal and the corresponding correlation time T⊥ is presented for the uniaxial potential of Martin et al. [Symp. Faraday Soc. 5 (1971) 119]. The corresponding longitudinal (i.e. parallel to the director axis) quantities α⊥(ω), T⊥ may be determined by simply replacing magnetic quantities by the corresponding electric ones in our previous study of the magnetic relaxation of single domain ferromagnetic particles Coffey et al. [Phys. Rev. E 49 (1994) 1869]. The calculation of α⊥(ω) is accomplished by expanding the spatial part of the distribution function of permanent dipole moment orientations on the unit sphere in the Fokker-Planck equation in normalised spherical harmonics. This leads to a three term recurrence relation for the Laplace transform of the transverse decay functions. The recurrence relation is solved exactly in terms of continued fractions. The zero frequency limit of the solution yields an analytic formula for the transverse correlation time T⊥ which is easily tabulated for all nematic potential barrier heights σ. A simple analytic expression for T∥ which consists of the well known Meier-Saupe formula [Mol. Cryst. 1 (1966) 515] with a substantial correction term which yields a close approximation to the exact solution for all σ, and the correct asymptotic behaviour, is also given. The effective eigenvalue method is shown to yield a simple formula for T⊥ which is valid for all σ. It appears that the low frequency relaxation process for both orientations of the applied field is accurately described in each case by a single Debye type mechanism with corresponding relaxation times (T∥, T⊥). 相似文献
