Nanotechnology will be an increasing part of the everyday lives of most people in the world. There is a general recognition
that few people understand the implications of the technology, the technology itself or even the definition of the word. This
lack of understanding stems from a lack of knowledge about science in general but more specifically difficulty in grasping
the size scale and symbolism of nanotechnology. A potential key to informing the general public is establishing the ability
to comprehend the scale of nanotechnology. Transitioning from the macro to the nanoscale seems to require an ability to comprehend
scales of one-billion. Scaling is a skill not common in most individuals and tests of their ability to extrapolate size based
upon scaling a common object demonstrates that most individuals cannot scale to the extent needed to make the transition to
nanoscale. Symbolism is another important vehicle to providing the general public with a basis to understand the concepts
of nanotechnology. With increasing age, individuals are able to draw representations of atomic scale objects, but these tend
to be iconic and the different representations not easily translated. Ball and stick models are most recognized by the public,
which provides an opportunity to present not only useful symbolism but also a reference point for the atomic scale. 相似文献

While several studies on the public opinion of nanotechnology have pointed to a rather enthusiastic U.S. public, the public
uptake of nanotechnology in Europe is more contained. The results of the Swiss publifocus on nanotechnology reveal a pragmatic attitude of citizens toward the emerging technologies, thus confirming what has been
identified as a “balanced approach” in the NanoJury UK.

The societal impacts of nanotechnology have attracted growing attention in the United States and Europe in recent years. In
Japan, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Technology Information Department) has played
a central role in promoting discussions on this topic by collecting information from Japan and overseas, creating a network
of the interested parties, and providing a forum for discussion. This paper presents a summary of recent activities in Japan
relating to the societal impacts of nanotechnology, fro the launch of the “Nanotechnology and Society” open forum (August
2004) until the “Nanotechnology Debate” discussion forum (February 2007), and outlines the policy recommendations that came
out of a project entitled “Research on Facilitation of Public Acceptance of Nanotechnology” (March 2006). 相似文献

Nanomaterials and their associated technologies hold promising opportunities for the development of new materials and applications
in a wide variety of disciplines, including medicine, environmental remediation, waste treatment, and energy conservation.
However, current information regarding the environmental effects and health risks associated with nanomaterials is limited
and sometimes contradictory. This article summarizes the conclusions of a 2008 NATO workshop designed to evaluate the wide-scale
implications (e.g., benefits, risks, and costs) of the use of nanomaterials on human health and the environment. A unique
feature of this workshop was its interdisciplinary nature and focus on the practical needs of policy decision makers. Workshop
presentations and discussion panels were structured along four main themes: technology and benefits, human health risk, environmental
risk, and policy implications. Four corresponding working groups (WGs) were formed to develop detailed summaries of the state-of-the-science
in their respective areas and to discuss emerging gaps and research needs. The WGs identified gaps between the rapid advances
in the types and applications of nanomaterials and the slower pace of human health and environmental risk science, along with
strategies to reduce the uncertainties associated with calculating these risks. 相似文献

We report data from the first representative national phone survey of Americans' perceptions about nanotechnology (N =1536). Public opinion about nanotechnology is in its infancy, and knowledge about it is quite limited. Yet, Americans' initial reaction to nanotechnology is thus far generally positive, probably rooted in a generally positive view of science overall. Survey respondents expected benefits of nanotechnology to be more prevalent than risks, and they reported feeling hopeful about nanotechnology rather than worried. Their most preferred potential benefit of nanotechnology is new and better ways to detect and treat human diseases, and they identified losing personal privacy to tiny new surveillance devices as the most important potential risk to avoid. The most discouraging aspect to the data is respondents' lack of trust in business leaders to minimize nanotechnology risks to human health. Overall, these data indicate that while Americans do not necessarily presume benefits and the absence of risks, their outlook is much more positive than not. 相似文献

The North American opinion climate for nanotechnology and its products: Opportunities and challenges
Susanna Priest 《Journal of nanoparticle research》2006,8(5):563-568
A January 2005 telephone survey of 1200 people in the U.S. and 2000 Canadians provides a snapshot of current North American opinion regarding nanotechnology at this crucial early point in its emergence from the laboratory to the arena of public discourse and public understanding. Using a typology of “publics” developed through analysis of a previous comparative survey (Priest, S., 2006) and subsequently tested against these newer data (Priest, S., 2005) this article describes the opinion climate for nanotechnology across North America. The comparison of key results from the two countries helps illustrate how social and cultural differences contribute to reactions to new technologies, including nanotech. The article also discusses implications for nanotechnology-related public outreach and risk communication efforts. 相似文献

Possibilities for global governance of converging technologies 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Mihail C. Roco 《Journal of nanoparticle research》2008,10(1):11-29
The convergence of nanotechnology, modern biology, the digital revolution and cognitive sciences will bring about tremendous
improvements in transformative tools, generate new products and services, enable opportunities to meet and enhance human potential
and social achievements, and in time reshape societal relationships. This paper focuses on the progress made in governance
of such converging, emerging technologies and suggests possibilities for a global approach. Specifically, this paper suggests
creating a multidisciplinary forum or a consultative coordinating group with members from various countries to address globally
governance of converging, emerging technologies. The proposed framework for governance of converging technologies calls for
four key functions: supporting the transformative impact of the new technologies; advancing responsible development that includes
health, safety and ethical concerns; encouraging national and global partnerships; and establishing commitments to long-term
planning and investments centered on human development. Principles of good governance guiding these functions include participation
of all those who are forging or affected by the new technologies, transparency of governance strategies, responsibility of
each participating stakeholder, and effective strategic planning. Introduction and management of converging technologies must
be done with respect for immediate concerns, such as privacy, access to medical advancements, and potential human health effects.
At the same time, introduction and management should also be done with respect for longer-term concerns, such as preserving
human integrity, dignity and welfare. The suggested governance functions apply to four levels of governance: (a) adapting
existing regulations and organizations; (b) establishing new programs, regulations and organizations specifically to handle
converging technologies; (c) building capacity for addressing these issues into national policies and institutions; and (d)
making international agreements and partnerships. Several possibilities for improving the governance of converging technologies
in the global self-regulating ecosystem are recommended: using open-source and incentive-based models, establishing corresponding
science and engineering platforms, empowering the stakeholders and promoting partnerships among them, implementing long-term
planning that includes international perspectives, and institute voluntary and science-based measures for risk management.

Opinion dynamics is studied through a minimal Ising model with three main influences (fields): personal conservatism (power-law distributed), inter-personal and group pressure, and a global field incorporating peer-to-peer and mass communications, which is generated bottom-up from the faction supporting the new opinion. A rich phase diagram appears separating possible terminal stages of the opinion diffusion, characterizing failure phases by the features of the individuals who had changed their opinion. An exhaustive solution of the model is produced, allowing predictions to be made on the opinion’s assimilation in the society. 相似文献

Nanotechnology, the design and manipulation of materials at the atomic scale, may well revolutionize many of the ways our
society manufactures products, produces energy, and treats diseases. New materials based on nanotechnology are already reaching
the market in a wide variety of consumer products. Some of the observed properties of nanomaterials call into question the
adequacy of current methods for determining hazard and exposure and for controlling resulting risks. Given the limitations
of existing regulatory tools and policies, we believe two distinct kinds of initiatives are needed: first, a major increase
in the federal investment in nanomaterial risk research; second, rapid development and implementation of voluntary standards
of care pending development of adequate regulatory safeguards in the longer term. Several voluntary programs are currently
at various stages of evolution, though the eventual outputs of each of these are still far from clear. Ultimately, effective
regulatory safeguards are necessary to provide a level playing field for industry while adequately protecting human health
and the environment. This paper reviews the existing toxicological literature on nanomaterials, outlines and analyzes the
current regulatory framework, and provides our recommendations, as an environmental non-profit organization, for safe nanotechnology
development. 相似文献

Worldwide nanotechnology development: a comparative study of USPTO,EPO, and JPO patents (1976–2004) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To assess worldwide development of nanotechnology, this paper compares the numbers and contents of nanotechnology patents
in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), European Patent Office (EPO), and Japan Patent Office (JPO). It
uses the patent databases as indicators of nanotechnology trends via bibliographic analysis, content map analysis, and citation
network analysis on nanotechnology patents per country, institution, and technology field. The numbers of nanotechnology patents
published in USPTO and EPO have continued to increase quasi-exponentially since 1980, while those published in JPO stabilized
after 1993. Institutions and individuals located in the same region as a repository’s patent office have a higher contribution
to the nanotechnology patent publication in that repository (“home advantage” effect). The USPTO and EPO databases had similar high-productivity contributing countries and technology fields with large number of
patents, but quite different high-impact countries and technology fields after the average number of received cites. Bibliographic analysis on USPTO and EPO patents shows that researchers in the United States and Japan published larger numbers
of patents than other countries, and that their patents were more frequently cited by other patents. Nanotechnology patents
covered physics research topics in all three repositories. In addition, USPTO showed the broadest representation in coverage
in biomedical and electronics areas. The analysis of citations by technology field indicates that USPTO had a clear pattern
of knowledge diffusion from highly cited fields to less cited fields, while EPO showed knowledge exchange mainly occurred
among highly cited fields. 相似文献

Numerous ethical and societal issues are related to the development of nanotechnology. Among them, the risk for privacy has long been discussed. Some people say that technology is neutral and that it does not really change the nature of problems, which are mainly political, while others state that its contemporary developments considerably amplify them; there are even persons who assert that it will make privacy protection obsolete. This article discusses those different positions by making reference to the classical Panopticon that is an architecture for surveillance, which characterizes the total absence of privacy. It envisages the possible evolutions of the Panopticon due to the development of nanotechnologies. It shows that the influence of nanotechnology on privacy concerns cannot be dissociated from the influence of computers and biotechnologies, i.e. from what is currently called the NBIC convergence. Lastly, it concludes on the new ethical trade-off that has to be made between three contradictory requirements that are security, transparency and privacy. 相似文献

Nanoscale science and engineering (NSE) have seen rapid growth and expansion in new areas in recent years. This paper provides an international patent analysis using the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) data searched by keywords of the entire text: title, abstract, claims, and specifications. A fraction of these patents fully satisfy the National Nanotechnology Initiative definition of nanotechnology (which requires exploiting specific phenomena and direct manipulation at the nanoscale), while others only make use of NSE tools and methods of investigation. In previous work we proposed an integrated patent analysis and visualization framework of patent content mapping for the NSE field and of knowledge flow pattern identification until 2002. In this paper, the results are updated for 2003, and the new trends are presented. 相似文献

In this study, protein was extracted from the apple seed flour using alkali-acid precipitation method. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of ultrasonication on structural and techno-functional properties of apple seed protein. Both native (N-protein) and ultra-sonicated protein (US-protein) were characterized for size, zeta potential, structure, protein pattern, crystallinity, thermal stability and functional properties. The results revealed that the hydrodynamic diameter of N-protein and US-protein was 1.2 µm and 484 nm while zeta potential was −11 and −19 mV, respectively. Fourier transform infrared-spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis showed change in the conformational characteristics and functional groups of proteins after nano-reduction. SEM revealed change in the surface morphology of protein molecule upon ultrasonication. Differential scanning calorimetry showed decreased denaturation temperature for US-protein compared to N-protein . SDS-PAGE depicted no change in protein pattern upon ultrasonication. Ultrasonicated protein exhibited increased functional properties like emulsification, foaming, hydrophobicity and oil absorbing properties and hence can be efficiently used as functional ingredient in food and nutraceutical industry. 相似文献

This study was undertaken to better understand current regional opinions regarding vocal fold nodules in adult singers. A questionnaire was sent to 298 persons representing the 3 professional groups most involved with the care of singers with vocal nodules: otolaryngologists, speech pathologists, and teachers of singing. The questionnaire queried respondents about their level of experience with this problem, and their beliefs about causative factors, career impact, and optimum treatment. Responses within and between groups were similar, with differences between groups primarily in the magnitude of positive or negative responses, rather than in the polarity of the responses. Prevailing opinions included: recognition of causative factors in both singing and speaking voice practices, optimism about responsiveness to appropriate treatment, enthusiasm for coordinated voice therapy and voice training as first-line treatment, and acceptance of microsurgical management as appropriate treatment if behavioral management fails. 相似文献

Public debates driven by incomplete scientific data where nobody can claim absolute certainty, due to the current state of scientific knowledge, are studied. The cases of evolution theory, global warming and H1N1 pandemic influenza are investigated. The first two are of controversial impact while the third is more neutral and resolved. To adopt a cautious balanced attitude based on clear but inconclusive data appears to be a lose-out strategy. In contrast overstating arguments with incorrect claims which cannot be scientifically refuted appears to be necessary but not sufficient to eventually win a public debate. The underlying key mechanisms of these puzzling and unfortunate conclusions are identified using the Galam sequential probabilistic model of opinion dynamics (Galam, 2002 [4], Galam, 2005 [18], Galam and Jacobs, 2007 [19]). It reveals that the existence of inflexible agents and their respective proportions are the instrumental parameters to determine the faith of incomplete scientific data in public debates. Acting on one’s own inflexible proportion modifies the topology of the flow diagram, which in turn can make irrelevant initial supports. On the contrary focusing on open-minded agents may be useless given some topologies. When the evidence is not as strong as claimed, the inflexibles rather than the data are found to drive the opinion of the population. The results shed a new but disturbing light on designing adequate strategies to win a public debate. 相似文献

Nanotips are highly demanded for various applications in nanotechnology. For instance, nanotips with a single atom end can be used as a source of self collimated electron or ion beams. Such tips are usually characterized in the field ion microscope (FIM) or the field emission microscope (FEM), where only a top view can be captured and analyzed. We have noticed that single atom tips fabricated by different methods produce electrons in FEM mode, or ions in FIM mode, at a wide range of applied voltages for the respective mode. In this work we present numerical and analytical analyses to the distribution of the electric field in the vicinity of the nanotip apex that holds the topmost single atom. We demonstrate that although the electric field is relatively enhanced by the nano protrusion it is still significantly dominated by the tip base. The analyses explicitly show that nanotips with broad bases produce even less field than some modest tips, at the same applied voltage. This pronounced effect of the tip base accounts for the relatively high voltages needed at the imaging threshold field. The results reveal that single atom tips are not necessarily sharp at a mesoscopic scale and the tip sharpness has to be determined from the combination of the nanotip apex (FIM or FEM) image and the applied voltage. 相似文献

Opinions of individuals in real social networks are arguably strongly influenced by external determinants, such as the opinions of those perceived to have the highest levels of authority. In order to model this, we have extended an existing model of consensus formation in an adaptive network by the introduction of a parameter representing each agent’s level of ‘authority’, based on their opinion relative to the overall opinion distribution. We found that introducing this model, along with a randomly varying opinion convergence factor, significantly impacts the final state of converged opinions and the number of interactions required to reach that state. We also determined the relationship between initial and final network topologies for this model, and whether the final topology is robust to node removals. Our results indicate firstly that the process of consensus formation with a model of authority consistently transforms the network from an arbitrary initial topology to one with distinct measurements in mean shortest path, clustering coefficient, and degree distribution. Secondly, we found that subsequent to the consensus formation process, the mean shortest path and clustering coefficient are less affected by both random and targeted node disconnection. Speculation on the relevance of these results to real world applications is provided. 相似文献

A family of evolution equations describing a power-law nonlinear diffusion process coupled with a local Verhulst-like growth dynamics, and incorporating a global regulation mechanism, is considered. These equations admit an interpretation in terms of population dynamics, and are related to the so-called conserved Fisher equation. Exact time-dependent solutions exhibiting a maximum nonextensive q-entropy shape are obtained. 相似文献

Heterogeneous kinetics are shown to differ drastically from homogeneous kinetics. For the elementary reaction A + A products we show that the diffusion-limited reaction rate is proportional tot
– h[A]2 or to [A]x, whereh=1- d
s/2, X=1+2/d
s
=(h-2)(h-1), andd
s
is the effective spectral dimension. We note that ford = d
s
=1, h =1/2 andX = 3, for percolating clustersd
s = 4/3,h = 1/3 andX = 5/2, while for dust ds <1, 1 >h > 1/2 and >X > 3. Scaling arguments, supercomputer simulations and experiments give a consistent picture. The interplay of energetic and geometric heterogeneity results in fractal-like kinetics and is relevant to excitation fusion experiments in porous membranes, films, and polymeric glasses. However, in isotopic mixed crystals, the geometric fractal nature (percolation clusters) dominates. 相似文献
