Detection efficiencies of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), defined as the ratio of ions reaching the detector and atoms released by LA were measured. For this purpose, LA of silicate glasses, zircon, and pure silicon was performed using nanosecond (ns) as well as femtosecond (fs) LA. For instance, ns-LA of silicate glass using helium as in-cell carrier gas resulted in detection efficiencies between approximately 1E-7 for low and 3E-5 for high mass range elements which were, in addition, almost independent on the laser wavelength and pulse duration chosen. In contrast, the application of argon as carrier gas was found to suppress the detection efficiencies systematically by a factor of up to 5 mainly due to a less efficient aerosol-to-ion conversion and ion transmission inside the ICP-MS.  相似文献

Relative mass transport efficiencies of near infrared (λ = 795 nm) femtosecond laser generated brass aerosols in helium were measured by ICP-MS applying different ablation cells with short and long washout times. It was found that the transport efficiencies are independent of the cell used within the mutual experimental uncertainties. This finding was confirmed by additional measurements providing the absolute particle mass transport efficiencies of femtosecond laser ablation in He. Here, the transport efficiencies were determined by weighing the samples before and after ablation with a micro-balance, collecting the particles by low-pressure impaction, and evaluating the impacted masses quantitatively by total reflection X-ray fluorescence. Within the experimental uncertainties (± 9–19%) the same absolute transport efficiency (about 77%) was found for all cells applied. This efficiency value can be regarded as a lower limit of the absolute mass transport efficiency since mass losses in the impactor are difficult to quantify.  相似文献

This work describes a simple procedure for blood lead level determination. The proposed method requires little sample pretreatment and subsequent direct analysis of a dried blood spot on a filter membrane using laser ablation coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). In general, LA-ICP-MS studies are somewhat limited by the lack of matrix-matched standards for calibration purposes. Here we describe aqueous standard calibration and matrix-matched calibration methods. This method was validated by analysis of the reference materials. With the matrix-matched calibration method, the recovery ranged from 97.8% to 112.8%, while the aqueous standard calibration method ranged 90.4% to 122.4%. The lower detection limit was estimated as 0.1 ng mL−1. The determination precision, expressed as the relative standard deviation (RSD), was not worse than 10% for all results. A sample throughput of approximately 5 min per sample made it possible to rapidly screen a large number of samples.  相似文献

A laser ablation setup including outer chamber, sample tube, sample holder and transport tubing was modelled and optimized using advanced computational fluid dynamics techniques. The different components of the setup were coupled and the whole device was modelled at once. The mass transport efficiency and transit times of near infrared femtosecond (fs) laser generated brass aerosols in pure argon and helium–argon mixtures were calculated at experimentally optimized conditions and a transient signal was constructed. The use of helium or argon did not influence the mass transport efficiency, but the signal structure changed. The signal fine structure was retrieved and experimentally validated. Bimodal peak structures were observed that seemed to originate from turbulent effects in the tubing connecting a Y-connector and the injector.  相似文献

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and laser ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS) have been applied as the most important inorganic mass spectrometric techniques having multielemental capability for the characterization of solid samples in materials science. ICP-MS is used for the sensitive determination of trace and ultratrace elements in digested solutions of solid samples or of process chemicals (ultrapure water, acids and organic solutions) for the semiconductor industry with detection limits down to sub-picogram per liter levels. Whereas ICP-MS on solid samples (e.g. high-purity ceramics) sometimes requires time-consuming sample preparation for its application in materials science, and the risk of contamination is a serious drawback, a fast, direct determination of trace elements in solid materials without any sample preparation by LA-ICP-MS is possible. The detection limits for the direct analysis of solid samples by LA-ICP-MS have been determined for many elements down to the nanogram per gram range. A deterioration of detection limits was observed for elements where interferences with polyatomic ions occur. The inherent interference problem can often be solved by applying a double-focusing sector field mass spectrometer at higher mass resolution or by collision-induced reactions of polyatomic ions with a collision gas using an ICP-MS fitted with collision cell. The main problem of LA-ICP-MS is quantification if no suitable standard reference materials with a similar matrix composition are available. The calibration problem in LA-ICP-MS can be solved using on-line solution-based calibration, and different procedures, such as external calibration and standard addition, have been discussed with respect to their application in materials science. The application of isotope dilution in solution-based calibration for trace metal determination in small amounts of noble metals has been developed as a new calibration strategy. This review discusses new analytical developments and possible applications of ICP-MS and LA-ICP-MS for the quantitative determination of trace elements and in surface analysis for materials science.  相似文献

This work explores the performance of laser ablation—inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry using different types of single-collector devices (sector field and time-of-flight instrumentation) for lead isotopic analysis of bronze coins, minted in the ancient city of Bilbilis. The aim of the study was achieving sufficient discrimination power to reveal similarities and differences for coins originating from different historical periods, and to obtain information on the possible source of the lead ores used in their production, while restricting the damage inflicted to the samples such that it is not visible to the naked eye.It was found that satisfactory results (RSD in the 0.15-0.30% range for 207Pb/206Pb and 208Pb/206Pb ratios) could be finally obtained, despite the noisy nature of signals generated upon ablation of the highly inhomogeneous coins, by means of a methodology based on: (a) selection of the line profiling ablation mode; (b) use of a dual pass spray chamber that permits the simultaneous introduction of a solution (containing thallium of known isotopic composition), thus resulting in a wet plasma that showed an increased robustness towards matrix effects and (c) detection using a TOF-ICPMS unit, which proved to be much better suited to deal with the transient signals obtained, while being also sufficiently sensitive to obtain good counting statistics, owing to the high lead level (average around 5%) present in the samples. Moreover, under these conditions, the simultaneous aspiration of the thallium spike permitted accurate correction for mass discrimination, such that it was not necessary to use external matrix-matched standards for calibration.  相似文献

We report on the determination of trace elements in solid samples by the combination of on-line double isotope dilution and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The proposed method requires the sequential analysis of the sample and a certified natural abundance standard by on-line IDMS using the same isotopically-enriched spike solution. In this way, the mass fraction of the analyte in the sample can be directly referred to the certified standard so the previous characterization of the spike solution is not required. To validate the procedure, Sr, Rb and Pb were determined in certified reference materials with different matrices, including silicate glasses (SRM 610, 612 and 614) and powdered samples (PACS-2, SRM 2710a, SRM 1944, SRM 2702 and SRM 2780). The analysis of powdered samples was carried out both by the preparation of pressed pellets and by lithium borate fusion. Experimental results for the analysis of powdered samples were in agreement with the certified values for all materials. Relative standard deviations in the range of 6–21% for pressed pellets and 3–21% for fused solids were obtained from n = 3 independent measurements. Minimal sample preparation, data treatment and consumption of the isotopically-enriched isotopes are the main advantages of the method over previously reported approaches.  相似文献

The paper describes the application of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) for the isotopic analysis of individual uranium-oxide particles. The procedure developed is suitable for the accurate measurement of 234U, 235U, 236U and 238U isotopes in single actinide particles with lateral dimensions down to 10 μm. The 235U/238U isotope ratios can be obtained with a precision of a few percent relative standard deviation using a single collector ICP-MS instrument. The precision could be improved by the use of slow ablation and by taking several LA-ICP-MS replicate spectra on the same particle investigated. For the minor isotopes use of higher mass resolution (R = 4000) was necessary in some cases to avoid spectral interferences. The technique developed offers a rapid and accurate possibility for the isotopic composition determination of uranium-containing individual particles in environmental and safeguards samples.  相似文献

Species-specific (SS) isotope dilution analysis with gel electrophoresis (GE)-laser ablation (LA)-ICP-MS is a promising technique for the quantification of particular metal-binding proteins in biological samples. However, unavailable isotopically enriched spike and metal losses in GE separation are main limitations for SS-isotope dilution PAGE-LA-ICP-MS. In this study, we report for the first time the absolute quantification of transferrin (Tf) and albumin (Alb) in human serum by non-denaturing (native) GE combined with species-unspecific isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). In order to achieve a homogeneous distribution of both protein and isotope-enriched spike (simulated isotope equilibration), immersing the protein strips with 34S spike solution after gel electrophoresis was demonstrated to be an effective way of spike addition. Furthermore, effects of immersion time and 34S spike concentration were investigated to obtain optimal conditions of the post-electrophoresis isotope dilution method. The relative mass of spike and ablated sample (msp/msam) in IDMS equation was calculated by standard Tf and Alb proteins, which could be applied to the quantification of Tf and Alb in ERM-DA470k/IFCC for method confirmation. The results were in agreement with the certified value with good precision and small uncertainty (1.5–3%). In this method, species-specific spike protein is not necessary and the integrity of the heteroatom-protein could be maintained in sample preparation process. Moreover, the application of species-unspecific isotope dilution GE-LA-ICP-MS has the potential to offer reliable, direct and simultaneous quantification of proteins after conventional 1D and 2D gel electrophoretic separations.  相似文献

Element determination in solid waste products from the steel industry usually involves the time-consuming step of preparing a solution of the solid. Laser ablation (LA) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has been applied to the analysis of Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd and Sn, elements of importance from the point of view of their impact on the environment, in electric arc furnace flue dust (EAFD). A simple method of sample preparation as pressed pellets using a mixture of cellulose and paraffin as binder material was applied. Calibration standards were prepared spiking multielement solution standards to a 1:1 ZnO + Fe2O3 synthetic matrix. The wet powder was dried and mechanically homogenised. Quantitative analysis were based on external calibration using a set of matrix matched calibration standards with Rh as a internal standard. Results obtained using only one-point for calibration without matrix matched, needing less time for standardization and data processing, are also presented. Data are calculated for flue dust reference materials: CRM 876-1 (EAFD), AG-6203 (EAFD), AG-6201 (cupola dust) and AG-SX3705 (coke ashes), and for two representative electrical arc furnace flue dusts samples from Spanish steelmaking companies: MS-1 and MS-2. For the reference materials, an acceptable agreement with certificate values was achieved, and the results for the MS samples matched with those obtained from conventional nebulization solutions (CN). The analytical precision was found to be better than 7% R.S.D. both within a single pellet and between several pellets of the same sample for all the elements.  相似文献

The feasibility of depth profiling was studied by using a 193-nm ArF* excimer laser ablation system (GeoLas, MicroLas, Goettingen, Germany) with a lens array-based beam homogenizer in combination with an ICP-QMS Agilent 7500. Two ablation cells (20 and 1.5 cm3) were compared at the laser repetition rate of 1 Hz, laser beam energy of 135 mJ and the carrier gas flow rate 1.5 L min–1 He + 0.78 L min–1 Ar. The ablation cell dimensions are important parameters for signal tailing; however, very small cell volumes (e.g. 1.5 cm3) may cause memory effects, which can be probably explained by dominant inertial losses of aerosol on cell walls with its delayed mobilization. The 20-cm3 ablation cell seems to be appropriate for depth profiling by continuous single-hole drilling. The study of the influence of the pit diameter magnitude on the waning and emerging signals under small crater depth/diameter aspect ratios, which range between 0.75 and 0.0375 for the 3-m-thick coatings and pit diameters 4–80 m, revealed that the steady-state signals of pure coating and pure substrate (out of interface) were obtained at crater diameters between 20 and 40 m. Depth resolution defined by means of slopes of tangents in the layer interface region depend on the pit diameter and has an optimum value between 20 and 40 m and gives 0.6 m for the 20-m pit. In-depth variation of concentration of coating constituent (Ti) was proved to be almost identical with two different laser/ICP systems.Viktor Kanický performed this work while on leave at ETH Zurich  相似文献

The determination of B in small volumes of undigested blood plasma and urine by isotope dilution and high efficiency direct injection nebulization (DIN) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is proposed. The C interference over 11B was removed by precipitating the samples proteins. Samples aliquots of 1 ml were spiked with an enriched 10B solution and shaken during 1 h to attain the isotopic equilibrium. Thereafter, the sample proteins were denaturated with nitric acid and the supernatant was analyzed. This procedure was effective to reduce C concentrations in approximately 94%. Sample volumes of 50 μl were introduced into the ICP by the direct injection nebulizer producing transient signals lasting 30 s for B isotopes measurements. Precision of 10B/11B measurements was characterized by relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 1%. The instrumental mass discrimination factor was lower than 5%. Total B concentrations from 100 to 135 μg L−1 in plasma and 0.499 to 3.021 mg L−1 in urine samples were found. Reproducibility of triplicate samples was characterized by RSD<2.0% for plasma and lower than 1.3% for urine samples. Limit of detection (3σ) of 0.6 ng ml−1 was calculated from synthetic blood plasma blank. Results of the denatured supernatant and digested plasma and urine samples were comparable at the 95% confidence level.  相似文献

This paper describes a simple procedure for the direct analysis and determination of multiple elements in dried blood samples on a filter membrane using laser ablation coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). With this technique, we simultaneously quantified 13 elements in whole blood: Be, Mn, Co, Ni, Tl, Bi, Sb, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ba, Mg, and Cd. The measured accuracies was in agreement with the Seronorm CRM certified values, except for Mn, Zn, Ba and Cd, which presented absolute differences higher than the expanded uncertainty for these elements. The within-run precision was less than 5.7% (relative standard deviation, RSD), except for the analyses of Be, and Mn (8.6% and 11.1%, respectively). The reproducibility (between-run precision) was calculated in terms of the RSD obtained for 12 analyses (i.e., four replicates of each sample in three analytical runs). Apart from Be, Mn, and Zn, the reproducibilities of all the elements listed above ranged between 4.0% and 8.5%. In contrast, for Cd, the concentration obtained was significantly different from the certified value; analyses of this element exhibited low reproducibility. Applying the matrix-matched calibration method, the accuracy for Cd measured was in agreement with both SRM966 and BCR 635; thus, matrix-matched calibration is a practical means of overcoming matrix-enhancement effects for the quantification of Cd. Sample throughput (ca. 5 min per sample) made it possible to rapidly screen a larger number of samples relative to other techniques that require time-consuming sample preparation steps (e.g., removal of a portion of the solid sample or digestion).  相似文献

A procedure for the direct analysis of silicon carbide powders (SiC) by simultaneous detection inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry using a Spectro-CIROS™ spectrometer (CCD-ICP-OES) and a novel spark ablation system Spectro-SASSy (SA) as sample introduction technique is described. The sample preparation procedure for SA of non-conducting material is based on mixing the sample powders with a conducting matrix, in this case copper and briquetting pellets. Pressing time, pressure and mixing ratio are shown to be important parameters of the pelleting technique with respect to their mechanical stability for the reliability of the analysis results. A mixing ratio of 0.2 g +0.6 g for SiC and Cu, a pressure of 10 t cm− 2 and a pressing time of 8 min have been found optimum. It has also been shown that the spark parameters selected are crucial for uniform volatilization. Electron probe micrographs of the burning spots and the analytical signal magnitude showed that a rather hard spark at 100 Hz was optimum. The determination of trace elements in silicon carbide powders is demonstrated using a calibration based on the addition of standard solutions. For Al, Ti, V, Mn and Fe detection limits in the lower µg g− 1 range can be achieved. Internal standardization with Y in combination with the addition of standard solutions allows relative standard deviations in the range of 4 to 24% for concentration levels of the order of 3 to 350 µg g− 1.  相似文献

The potential of the laser-induced argon spark atomizer (LINA-Spark atomizer) coupled with ICP-AES as a convenient device for direct analysis of WC/Co powdered precursors of sintered hardmetals was studied. The samples were presented for the ablation as pressed pellets prepared by mixing with powdered silver binder containing GeO2 as internal standard. The pellets were ablated with the aid of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) focused 16 mm behind the target surface with a resulting estimated power density of 5 GW cm–2. Laser ablation ICP-AES signals were studied as a function of ablation time, and the duration of time prior to measurement (pre-ablation time) which was necessary to obtain reliable results was about 40 s. Linear calibration plots were obtained up to 10% (m/m) Ti, 9% Ta and 3.5% Nb both without internal standardization and by using germanium as an added internal standard or tungsten as a contained internal standard. The relative uncertainty at the centroid of the calibration line was in the range from ±6% to ±11% for Nb, Ta and Ti both with and without internal standardisation by Ge. A higher spread of points about the regression was observed for cobalt for which the relative uncertainty at the centroid was in the range from ±9% to ±14%. Repeatability of results was improved by the use of both Ge and W internal standards. The lowest determinable quantities calculated for calibration plots were 0.060% Co, 0.010% Nb, 0.16% Ta and 0.030% Ti with internal standardization by Ge. The LA-ICP-AES analyses of real samples led to good agreement with the results obtained by solution-based ICP determination with a relative bias not exceeding 10%. The elimination of the dissolution procedure of powdered tungsten (Nb, Ta, Ti) carbide is the principal advantage of the developed LA-ICP-AES method.  相似文献

In this work we present a novel approach for in vitro studies of cisplatin interactions with 8-mer oligonucleotides. The approach is based on the recently developed coupling of continuous elution gel electrophoresis (GE) to an inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometer (ICP-SFMS) with the aim of monitoring the interaction process between this cytostatic drug and the nucleotides. In contrast to existing methods, the electrophoretic separation conditions used here allow both the determination of the reaction kinetics in more detail as well as the observation of dominant intermediates. Two different nucleotides sequences have been investigated for comparison purposes, one containing two adjacent guanines (5'-TCCGGTCC-3') and one with a combination of thymine and guanine (5'-TCCTGTCC-3'), respectively. In order to gain further structural information, MALDI-TOF MS measurements have been performed after fraction collection. This allows for identification of the intermediates and the final products and confirms the stepwise coordination of cisplatin via monoadduct to bisadduct formation. Furthermore, the ICP-MS results were quantitatively evaluated in order to calculate the kinetics of the entire process.  相似文献

A methodology for bulk analysis of Al and Ti and for determination of soluble and total Al and Ti concentration in steel samples by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was developed. The spatial distribution (both at surface and within the sample) of the insoluble fraction of Al and Ti was also qualitatively estimated. Certified reference materials (CRMs) SS-451 to 460 (carbon steel) and 064-1 (Nb/Ti interstitial free steel), from BAS, and JK 2D (carbon steel) and JK 37 (highly alloyed steel), from SIMR, were studied. It was demonstrated that the insoluble fraction of Al and Ti is heterogeneously distributed. A series of nine glass samples (fused beads) with fixed Fe content and different Al and Ti contents was prepared by melting appropriate amounts of Fe2O3, Al2O3 and TiO2 with a lithium tetraborate–sodium carbonate mixture. Quantitative determinations were performed by using calibration graphs obtained from the synthetic fused beads, with 57Fe as internal standard; line scan laser sampling mode was used, focusing the laser beam at the sample surface. The optimized laser operating parameters were: laser pulse energy of 1.5 mJ, pulse repetition rate of 5 Hz, scanning speed of 5 μm s−1 and preablation time of 20 s. The concentrations obtained for bulk analysis of CRM samples corresponded with the certified values within the experimental uncertainty. An acceptable concordance between certified and found values was attained for the determination of soluble and total Al and Ti in CRM 064-1 sample.  相似文献

This paper describes a simple method for simultaneous preconcentration and matrix reduction during the analysis of rare earth elements (REEs) in water samples through laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). From a systematic investigation of the co-precipitation of REEs using magnesium hydroxide, we optimized the effects of several parameters - the pH, the amount of magnesium, the shaking time, the efficiency of Ba removal, and the sample matrix - to ensure quantitative recoveries. We employed repetitive laser ablation to remove the dried-droplet samples from the filter medium and introduce them into the ICP-MS system for determinations of REEs. The enrichment factors ranged from 8 to 88. The detection limit, at an enrichment factor of 32, ranged from 0.03 to 0.20 pg mL−1. The relative standard deviations for the determination of REEs at a concentration of 1 ng mL−1 when processing 40 mL sample solution were 2.0-4.8%. We applied this method to the satisfactory determination of REEs in lake water and synthetic seawater samples.  相似文献
