We consider the problem of composing Berezin-Toeplitz operators on the Hilbert space of Gaussian square-integrable entire functions on complex -space, . For several interesting algebras of functions on , we have for all in the algebra, where is the Berezin-Toeplitz operator associated with and is a ``twisted' associative product on the algebra of functions. On the other hand, there is a function for which is bounded but for any .

     

Self-commutators of automorphic composition operators on the Dirichlet space

Let be a conformal automorphism on the unit disk and be the composition operator on the Dirichlet space induced by . In this article we completely determine the point spectrum, spectrum, essential spectrum and essential norm of the operators and self-commutators of , which expose that the spectrum and point spectrum coincide. We also find the eigenfunctions of the operators.

Composition operators on Dirichlet-type spaces

The Dirichlet-type space ) is the Banach space of functions analytic in the unit disc with derivatives belonging to the Bergman space . Let be an analytic self-map of the disc and define for . The operator is bounded (respectively, compact) if and only if a related measure is Carleson (respectively, compact Carleson). If is bounded (or compact) on , then the same behavior holds on ) and on the weighted Dirichlet space . Compactness on implies that is compact on the Hardy spaces and the angular derivative exists nowhere on the unit circle. Conditions are given which, together with the angular derivative condition, imply compactness on the space . Inner functions which induce bounded composition operators on are discussed briefly.

Sufficient conditions for one domain to contain another in a space of constant curvature

As an application of the analogue of C-S. Chen's kinematic formula in the 3-dimensional space of constant curvature , that is, Euclidean space , -sphere , hyperbolic space (, respectively), we obtain sufficient conditions for one domain to contain another domain in either an Euclidean space , or a -sphere or a hyperbolic space .

     

A lower bound for sums of eigenvalues of the Laplacian

The optimal in view of this asymptotic relation lower estimate for the sums has been proven by P.Li and S.T.Yau (Comm. Math. Phys. 88 (1983), 309-318). Here we will improve this estimate by adding to its right-hand side a term of the order of that depends on the ratio of the volume to the moment of inertia of .

     

Compact operators whose real and imaginary parts are positive

Let be a compact operator on a Hilbert space such that the operators and are positive. Let be the singular values of and the eigenvalues of , all enumerated in decreasing order. We show that the sequence is majorised by . An important consequence is that, when is less than or equal to , and when this inequality is reversed.

     

On exceptional eigenvalues of the Laplacian for

An explicit Dirichlet series is obtained, which represents an analytic function of in the half-plane except for having simple poles at points that correspond to exceptional eigenvalues of the non-Euclidean Laplacian for Hecke congruence subgroups by the relation for . Coefficients of the Dirichlet series involve all class numbers of real quadratic number fields. But, only the terms with for sufficiently large discriminants contribute to the residues of the Dirichlet series at the poles , where is the multiplicity of the eigenvalue for . This may indicate (I'm not able to prove yet) that the multiplicity of exceptional eigenvalues can be arbitrarily large. On the other hand, by density theorem the multiplicity of exceptional eigenvalues is bounded above by a constant depending only on .

     

Pointwise convergence of bounded cascade sequences

The cascade algorithm plays an important role in computer graphics and wavelet analysis. For an initial function , a cascade sequence is constructed by the iteration where is defined by In this paper, under a condition that the sequence is bounded in , we prove that the following three statements are equivalent: (i) converges . (ii) For , there exist a positive constant and a constant such that (iii) For some converges in . An example is presented to illustrate our result.

     

A multiplicity theorem for the Neumann problem

Let be the -crossed product of a simple unital -algebra by a finite group . In this paper we show that the canonical conditional expectation from to has the minimal index if is simple. It is also proved that if is an outer action, then the canonical one is the unique conditional expectation of index-finite type from to , while there are infinitely many conditional expectations when a nontrivial subgroup of acts innerly on .

     

On a subspace perturbation problem

We discuss the problem of perturbation of spectral subspaces for linear self-adjoint operators on a separable Hilbert space. Let and be bounded self-adjoint operators. Assume that the spectrum of consists of two disjoint parts and such that 0$">. We show that the norm of the difference of the spectral projections

for and is less than one whenever either (i) or (ii) and certain assumptions on the mutual disposition of the sets and are satisfied.

     

A short proof of ergodicity of Babillot-Ledrappier measures

Let be a compact manifold, and let be a transitive homologically full Anosov flow on . Let be a -cover for , and let be the lift of to . Babillot and Ledrappier exhibited a family of measures on , which are invariant and ergodic with respect to the strong stable foliation of . We provide a new short proof of ergodicity.

     

On a proposed characterization of Schatten-class composition operators

For an analytic function which maps the open unit disc to itself, let be the operator of composition with on the Bergman space . It has been a longstanding problem to determine whether or not the membership of in the Schatten class , , is equivalent to the condition that the function has a finite integral with respect to the Möbius-invariant measure on . We show that the answer is negative when .

     

Holes in the spectrum of functions generating affine systems

Given a expansive dilation matrix , a measurable set is called a -dilation generator of if is tiled (modulo null sets) by the collection . Our main goal in this paper is to prove certain results relating the support of the Fourier transform of functions generating a wavelet or orthonormal affine system associated with the dilation to an arbitrary set which is a -dilation generator of .
