For maps equivariant under the action of a finite group on n, the possible symmetries of fixed points are known and correspond to the isotropy subgroups. This paper investigates the possible symmetries of arbitrary, possibly chaotic, attractors and finds that the necessary conditions of Melbourne, Dellnitz & Golubitsky [15] are sufficient, at least for continuous maps. This result shows that the reflection hyperplanes are important in determining those groups which are admissible; more precisely, a subgroup of is admissible as the symmetry group of an attractor if there exists a with / cyclic such that fixes a connected component of the complement of the set of reflection hyperplanes of reflections in but not in . For finite reflection groups this condition on reduces to the condition that is an isotropy subgroup. Our results are illustrated for finite subgroups of O(3).

Periodic perturbations at the explosion product–metal interface were studied experimentally. Experiments were performed for both spherical and plane geometry. Critical conditions of wave formation (detonation velocity of an explosive charge D 6.9 mm/sec) are determined, and an explanation of this effect is given. It is found experimentally that a dynamic pulse causes intense plastic strains at the explosion products–metal interface, leading to thermal softening of the steel boundary layer. In this layer, Kelvin–Helmholtz instability occurs. Calculationanalytical estimates of the critical boundary unstable wavelength agree satisfactorily with experimental results.

The spatio-temporal characteristics of the wall-pressure fluctuations in separated and reattaching flows over a backward-facing step were investigated through pressure-velocity joint measurements carried out using multiple-arrayed microphones and split-film probes. A spoke-wheel-type wake generator was installed upstream of the backward-facing step. The flow structure at the effective forcing frequency (St f=0.2) was found to be well organized in terms of wall pressure spectrum, cross-correlation, wavenumber-frequency spectrum, and wavelet auto-correlation. Introduction of the unsteady wake (St f=0.2) reduced the reattachment length by 10%. In addition, the unsteady wake enhanced the turbulence intensity near the separation edge and, as a consequence, enhanced the quadrupole sound sources; however, the turbulence intensity near the reattachment region was weakened and the overall flow noise was attenuated. The greater organization of the flow structure induced by the unsteady wake led to a weakening of the dipole sound sources, which are the dominant sound sources in this system. The dipole sound sources generated by wall pressure fluctuations were calculated using Curles integral formula.Abbreviations AR Aspect ratio - SBF Spatial box filtering Roman symbols C p Wall pressure fluctuation coefficient, p/0.5U 2 - H Step height of backward-facing step (mm) - H s Shape factor (H s = */) - R s Distance from acoustic source point to observation point (m) - Re H Reynolds number, U H/ - St The reduced frequency, fH/U - St f Normalized forcing frequency by unsteady wake, f p H/U - T Vortex shedding period (s) - U Free-stream velocity (m/s) - a Speed of sound (m/s) - f Frequency (Hz) - f p Wake passing frequency (Hz) - k Turbulent kinetic energy (m2/s2) - k x Streamwise wave number (1/m) - k z Spanwise wave number (1/m) - l j Cosine of angle - p Instantaneous wall pressure (Pa) - p rms Root-mean-square of wall pressure (Pa) - p SBF Spatial box filtered wall pressure (Pa) - p d Dipole sound source (Pa) - p w Conditionally-averaged wall pressure (Pa) - q Dynamic pressure, 0.5U 2 (Pa) - r Distance from origin to observation point (mm) - u c Convection velocity (m/s) - umax Root-mean-square of streamwise velocity (m/s) - x R Time-mean reattachment length (mm) Greek symbols p Forward-flow time fraction - Auto-correlation of pressure at x 0 - Two-dimensional cross-correlation of pressure with streamwise separation interval , spanwise separation interval , and time delay , at (x 0, z 0) - Boundary layer thickness (mm, 99%) - * Displacement thickness (mm, ) - ij Kroneckers delta function - Phase angle (°) - Wavelength (mm) - Momentum thickness (mm, ) - Angle between vertical axis and observation point (°) - Density (kg/m3) - Time delay (s) - Streamwise separation interval (m) - Spanwise separation interval (m) - p (f; x 0) Autospectrum of pressure measured at x 0 (Pa2 s) - pp (, ; x 0) Streamwise cross spectrum of pressure at x 0 (Pa2 s) - pp (, , ; x 0, z 0) Streamwise and spanwise cross spectrum of pressure at (x 0, z 0) (Pa2 s) - pp (kx, ; x 0) Streamwise wavenumber-frequency spectrum of pressure at x 0 (Pa2 s) - pp (kx, kz, ; x 0, z 0) Two-dimensional wavenumber-frequency spectrum of pressure at (x 0, z 0) (Pa2 s)

The orienting properties of incompressible discotic nematic liquid crystals for creeping flows between converging and diverging planar walls (Jeffrey-Hamel) are analyzed using the Leslie-Ericksen theory. The dependence of director orientation on the reactive parameter and the flow kinematics is presented. Closed form stationary solutions for the director orientation are found when elastic effects are neglected. Stationary numerical solutions for the velocity and director fields using the full Leslie-Ericksen theory are presented. The director field in converging flow is characterized by azimuthal (radial) centerline orientation, by being asymmetric with respect to the azimuthal (radial) direction, and by having an allowed orientation range that spans two half-quadrants (full quadrants). In the limiting case of perfectly flat disk ( –) the flow-induced director orientation in converging flow is the azimuthal direction, while in diverging flow the director rotates by a full n radians. By reducing the vertex angle between the walls to vanishingly small values, converging flow solutions properly reduce to those of flow between parallel plates, but diverging flows are expected to lead to a new instability.

An experimental investigation of low Reynolds number flow in a rotating tank indicates that in some cases closed eddies in Stokes flow are very sensitive to geometry, especially if the eddies are slender. It is not known if such flows are merely extremely sensitive to the bounding geometry, or if they are actually geometrically unstable.

Free convection and film boiling heat transfer in the critical region of water and carbon dioxide
Measurements of free convection and boiling from an electrically heated platinum wire (d=0,1 mm) in water near its critical state are given and taken for checking a theoretical boundary layer modell. For heat transfer at free convection, a simplified calculation method is derived which is tested by several measurements in water and carbon dioxide. For film boiling, the limits of a representation of experimental results in Nusselt-Rayleigh-diagrams are pointed out. A simplified method of calculating the basic curve of film boiling heat transfer is given.

A new experimental method is proposed for determining the effective absorptivity of a metal under pulsed laser radiation. The method is based on solving an axisymmetric boundaryvalue heatconduction problem for a halfspace with the use of metallographically measured sizes of the polymorphictransformation zone in the irradiated material. The method is tested on singlecrystal cobalt and St.45 steel samples.

Stability of periodic solutions of a nonselfsimilar nonlinear problem is studied. The problem describes the thermal state of an axial fluid flow with continuously distributed sources of heat. The flow experiences the action of external lowamplitude perturbations changing in time in accordance with known periodic laws. The spectral problem is solved by the method of parametrix, and the critical conditions of the thermal explosion are determined in the linear approximation. Stability of the periodic solution at the critical point is evaluated using the known theorem of factorization, which takes into account the effect of nonlinear terms of the heatbalance equation. The calculation results show that the periodic solution is stable if the total action of external periodic perturbations at the critical point is directed to reduction of the fluidflow temperature.

Shear softening and thixotropic properties of wheat flour doughs are demonstrated in dynamic testing with a constant stress rheometer. This behaviour appears beyond the strictly linear domain (strain amplitude 0 0.2%),G,G and |*| decreasing with 0, the strain response to a sine stress wave yet retaining a sinusoidal shape. It is also shown thatG recovers progressively in function of rest time. In this domain, as well as in the strictly linear domain, the Cox-Merz rule did not apply but() and | *())| may be superimposed by using a shift factor, its value decreasing in the former domain when 0 increases. Beyond a strain amplitude of about 10–20%, the strain response is progressively distorted and the shear softening effects become irreversible following rest.

We consider a surface S = (), where 2 is a bounded, connected, open set with a smooth boundary and : 3 is a smooth map; let () denote the components of the two-dimensional linearized strain tensor of S and let 0 with length 0 > 0. We assume the the norm ,|| ()||0, in the space V0() = { H1() × H1() × L2(); = 0 on 0 } is equivalent to the usual product norm on this space. We then establish that this assumption implies that the surface S is uniformly elliptic and that we necessarily have 0 = .

Calculations of the flow of the mixture 0.94 CO2+0.05 N2+0.01 Ar past the forward portion of segmentai bodies are presented. The temperature, pressure, and concentration distributions are given as a function of the pressure ahead of the shock wave and the body velocity. Analysis of the concentration distribution makes it possible to formulate a simplified model for the chemical reaction kinetics in the shock layer that reflects the primary flow characteristics. The density distributions are used to verify the validity of the binary similarity law throughout the shock layer region calculated. The flow of a CO2+N2+Ar gas mixture of varying composition past a spherical nose was examined in [1]. The basic flow properties in the shock layer were studied, particularly flow dependence on the free-stream CO2 and N2 concentration.New revised data on the properties of the Venusian atmosphere have appeared in the literature [2, 3] One is the dominant CO2 concentration. This finding permits more rigorous formulation of the problem of blunt body motion in the Venus atmosphere, and attention can be concentrated on revising the CO2 thermodynamic and kinetic properties that must be used in the calculation. The problem of supersonic nonequilibrium flow past a blunt body is solved within the framework of the problem formulation of [4].Notation V body velocity - shock wave standoff - universal gas constant - ratio of frozen specific heats - hRt/m enthalpy per unit mass undisturbed stream P pressure - density - T temperature - m molecular weight - cp specific heat at constant pressure - (X) concentration of component X (number of particles in unit mass) - R body radius of curvature at the stagnation point - j rate of j-th chemical reaction shock layer P V 2 pressure - density - TT temperature - mm molecular weight Translated from Izv. Summary For the elementary (finite or infinitesimal) constituents of the structure are assumed generalized stress-strain relations which satisfy the condition of normality but which may exhibit work-softening, concavity of yield surfaces, variation of elastic coefficients with stress and/or plastic strain. The usual phenomena of geometric instability are excluded. Sufficient conditions are formulated for overall stability in spite of the presence of unstable elements, and for uniqueness of the incremental boundary-values problem. Conditions are discussed with a view to applications and expressed in terms of positive definiteness of appropriate quadratic forms. Finally, yield surfaces and flow laws for the structure are examined, and among other things their necessary association is shown.

An effective numerical procedure, based on the Galerkin method, for finding solutions of the stationary traveling wave type in the complete formulation is proposed for the case of viscous liquid films. Examples of a viscous film flowing freely down a vertical surface have been calculated. The calculations have been made for various values of the dimensionless surface tension , including =0. The method makes it possible to predict a number of bifurcations that occur as decreases. The existence of numerous families of stationary traveling waves when 1 was demonstrated in [6]. The present study shows that as 1 all but one of these families of wave solutions disappear. The shape of the periodic and solitary waves and the pressure distribution in the film are found for various . When =0 and the wave number is fairly small, the periodic solution has a singularity, as predicted in [14]: at the crest of the wave a corner point appears; the angle between the tangents at this point =140–150. The method proposed can be used to calculate other wavy film flows.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 3, pp. 94–100, May–June, 1990.

A particular class of flows resulting from explosions is considered and two processes are analyzed, both independently and as coupled processes: the transition of the solution to the problem of nonpoint explosion to the corresponding point regime and the transition of the solution to the problem of an explosion with nonone-dimensional initial conditions to a corresponding one-dimensional solution (not necessarily a point solution).Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 93–99, July–August, 1983.

The paper studies boundaryvalue problems for dynamicdiffusion boundary layers occurring near a vertical wall at high Schmidt numbers and for dynamic boundary layers whose inner edge is adjacent to the dynamicdiffusion layers. Exact solutions for boundary layers at small and large times are derived. The wellposedness of the boundaryvalue problem for a steady dynamicdiffusion layer is studied.

A solution is obtained for the relationship between load, displacement and inner contact radius for an axisymmetric, spherically concave, rigid punch, indenting an elastic half-space. Analytic approximations are developed for the limiting cases in which the ratio of the inner and outer radii of the annular contact region is respectively small and close to unity. These approximations overlap well at intermediate values. The same method is applied to the conically concave punch and to a punch with a central hole. , , . , . . .

A numerical solution is obtained for the problem of air flow past a sphere under conditions when nonequilibrium excitation of the vibrational degrees of freedom of the molecular components takes place in the shock layer. The problem is solved using the method of [1]. In calculating the relaxation rates account was taken of two processes: 1) transition of the molecular translational energy into vibrational energy during collision; 2) exchange of vibrational energy between the air components. Expressions for the relaxation rates were computed in [2]. The solution indicates that in the state far from equilibrium a relaxation layer is formed near the sphere surface. A comparison is made of the calculated values of the shock standoff with the experimental data of [3].Notation uVmax, vVmax velocity components normal and tangential to the sphere surface - Vmax maximal velocity - P V max 2 pressure - density - TT temperature - eviRT vibrational energy of the i-th component per mole (i=–O2, N2) - =rb–1 shock wave shape - a f the frozen speed of sound - HRT/m gas total enthalpy
