Quark confinement and the fractional quantum Hall effect 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Working in the physics of Wilson factor and Aharonov-Bohm effect, we find in the fluxtube-quark system the topology of a baryon consisting of three heavy flavor quarks resembles that of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in condensed matter. This similarity yields the result that the constituent quarks of baryon have the ``filling factor' 1/3, thus the previous conjecture that quark confinement is a correlation effect is confirmed. Moreover, by deriving a Hamiltonian of the system analogous to that of FQHE, we predict an energy gap for the ground state of a heavy three-quark system. 相似文献

We propose the effective hierarchical partition function which is able to describe both the Jain states and the Jain-type hierarchical states. Using this partition function (effective Lagrangian) we calculate the charge of the quasiparticle excitations. We show that the Jain-type hierarchical states are equivalent to the system of anyons in the external magnetic field. 相似文献

With the recent observation of graphene-like Landau levels at the surface of topological insulators, the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effect, which is a fundamental signature of strong correlations, has become of interest. Some experiments have reported intra-Landau level structure that is suggestive of fractional quantum Hall effect. This paper discusses the feasibility of fractional quantum Hall effect from a theoretical perspective, and argues that while this effect should occur, ideally, in the n=0 and |n|=1 Landau levels, it is ruled out in higher |n| Landau levels. Unlike graphene, the fractional quantum Hall effect in topological insulators is predicted to show an interesting asymmetry between n=1 and n=−1 Landau levels due to spin-orbit coupling. 相似文献

Current breakdown of the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects detected by torque magnetometry

We have developed a novel technique that enables measurements of the breakdown of both the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects in a two-dimensional electron system without the need to contact the sample. The critical Hall electric fields that we measure are significantly higher than those reported by other workers, and support the quasi-elastic inter-Landau-level tunnelling model of breakdown. Comparison of the fractional quantum Hall effect results with those obtained on the integer quantum Hall effect allows the fractional quantum Hall effect energy gap to be determined and provides a test of the composite-fermion theory. The temperature dependence of the critical current gives an insight into the mechanism by which momentum may be conserved during the breakdown process. 相似文献

The propagation direction of fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) edge states has been investigated experimentally via the symmetry properties of the multi-terminal capacitances of a two-dimensional electron gas. Although strong asymmetries with respect to zero magnetic field appear, no asymmetries with respect to even denominator Landau level filling factor ν are seen. This indicates that current-carrying FQHE edge states propagate in the same direction as integer QHE edge states. In addition, anomalous capacitance features, indicative of enhanced bulk conduction, are observed at

The robustness of the quantum spin Hall effect to the thickness fluctuation in HgTe quantum wells 下载免费PDF全文
The quantum spin Hall effect(QSHE) was first realized in HgTe quantum wells(QWs),which remain the only known two-dimensional topological insulator so far.In this paper,we have systematically studied the effect of the thickness fluctuation of HgTe QWs on the QSHE.We start with the case of constant mass with random distributions, and reveal that the disordered system can be well described by a virtual uniform QW with an effective mass when the number of components is small. When the number is infinite and corresponds to the real fluctuation,we find that the QSHE is not only robust, but also can be generated by relatively strong fluctuation. Our results imply that the thickness fluctuation does not cause backscattering, and the QSHE is robust to it. 相似文献

Quantum Hall effect (QHE), as a class of quantum phenomena that occur in macroscopic scale, is one of the most important topics in condensed matter physics. It has long been expected that QHE may occur without Landau levels so that neither external magnetic field nor high sample mobility is required for its study and application, Such a QHE free of Landau levels, can appear in topological insulators (TIs) with ferromagnetism as the quantized version of the anomalous Hall effect, i.e., quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect. Here we review our recent work on experimental realization of the QAH effect in magnetically doped TIs. With molecular beam epitaxy, we prepare thin films of Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3 TIs with well- controlled chemical potential and long-range ferromagnetic order that can survive the insulating phase. In such thin films, we eventually observed the quantization of the Hall resistance at h/e2 at zero field, accompanied by a considerable drop in the longitudinal resistance. Under a strong magnetic field, the longitudinal resistance vanishes, whereas the Hall resistance remains at the quantized value. The realization of the QAH effect provides a foundation for many other novel quantum phenomena predicted in TIs, and opens a route to practical applications of quantum Hall physics in low-power-consumption electronics.

We report an inelastic light scattering study of long wavelength collective gap excitations of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at ν=p/(2p+1) for

In the study of fractional quantum Hall states, a certain clustering condition involving up to four integers has been identified. We give a simple proof that particular Jack polynomials with α=−(r−1)/(k+1), (r−1) and (k+1) relatively prime, and with partition given in terms of its frequencies by [n00(r−1)sk0r−1k0r−1k?0r−1m] satisfy this clustering condition. Our proof makes essential use of the fact that these Jack polynomials are translationally invariant. We also consider nonsymmetric Jack polynomials, symmetric and nonsymmetric generalized Hermite and Laguerre polynomials, and Macdonald polynomials from the viewpoint of the clustering. 相似文献

Algebro-geometric methods are applied to the theoretical understanding of the fractionary quantum Hall effect on a periodic lattice. The fermionic Fock space of the many-electron system is precisely identified, and as a consequence, the variational Haldane-Rezayi ground state is decomposed in terms of one-particle wave functions at the first Landau level; the filling factor is thus analytically computed. Quasi-hole and quasi-particle excitations are also analyzed. The center of mass dynamics is described in terms of a section in a very subtle stable vector bundle. The Hall conductance arises as a topological invariant; namely, the slope of the vector bundle previously mentioned. 相似文献

This work presents a theoretical study of the energy spectrum of GaAs/AlGaAs concentric double quantum rings, under an applied magnetic field directed perpendicular to the ring plane. The Schrödinger equation for this system is solved in a realistic model consisting of rings with finite barrier potentials. Numerical results show that increasing the magnetic field intensity leads to oscillations in the ground state energy which, in contrast to the usual Aharonov-Bohm oscillations, do not have a well defined period, due to the coupling between inner and outer ring states. However, when one considers an elliptical geometry for the rings, the energy spectra of the inner and outer ring states are decoupled and the periodicity of the oscillations is recovered. 相似文献

Bound values for Hall conductivity under quantum Hall effect (QHE) conditions in inhomogeneous medium has been studied. It
is shown that bound values for Hall conductivity differ from bound values for metallic conductivity. This is due to the unusual
character of current percolation under quantum Hall effect conditions.
