Two protocols for the preparation of [2]rotaxanes based on the dibenzo-24-crown-8-based cryptand/paraquat recognition motif

Host–guest complexation between a dibenzo-24-crown-8-based cryptand and a paraquat derivative was studied. Subsequently, two novel [2]rotaxanes based on the dibenzo-24-crown-8-based cryptand/paraquat recognition motif were prepared by threading-followed-by-stoppering method and single-pot method, respectively. The obtained mechanically interlocked structures were confirmed by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, 2D NMR, and ESI-MS.     

Bis(benzimidazolium)methane salts: a potential guest for dibenzo-24-crown-8 towards [2]pseudorotaxanes

We investigated the threading of bis(benzimidazolium) methane moieties with DB24C8 at 35 °C (room temperature) and found a high degree of association. The presence of threaded complexes was determined by ¹H NMR and also supported by high resolution mass spectrometry and B3LYP/6-31G**++calculations. A 2D NMR study was done to elucidate the host-guest geometry and the molecular interactions present. The variable temperature NMR experiment was done over a temperature range of 243-323 K. The threading was stable and visible even at 323 K. Acid-base equilibrium established the reversibility of the process. DFT optimized structures establish that two H-bonded links are present between O₁?O_4′ and O₃?O_2′ across the dibenzo axis of the crown.     

Extraction of microamounts of calcium into nitrobenzene using hydrogen dicarbollylcobaltate in the presence of dibenzo-21-crown-7 and dibenzo-24-crown-8

Extraction of microamounts of calcium by a nitrobenzene solution of hydrogen dicarbollylcobaltate (H⁺B⁻) in the presence of dibenzo-21-crown-7 (DB21C7) and dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8) has been investigated. The equilibrium data have been explained assuming that the complexes HL⁺, CaL²⁺, CaL₂²⁺ and CaHL₂³⁺ (L = DB21C7, DB24C8) are extracted into the organic phase. The values of extraction and stability constants of the species in nitrobenzene saturated with water have been determined.     

Branched [n]rotaxanes (n = 2-4) from multiple dibenzo-24-crown-8 ether wheels and 1,2-bis(4,4'-dipyridinium)ethane axles

To investigate the possibility of incorporating the 1,2-bis(pyridinium)ethane[subset or is implied by]24C8 [2]pseudorotaxane motif into dendrimer like macromolecules, a series of branched [n]rotaxanes were prepared employing multiple dibenzo-24-membered crown ether wheels with various aromatic core structures and the 1,2-bis(4,4'-dipyridinium)ethane axle. Yields of branched [2]-, [3]- and [4]rotaxanes were dependent on the size of the core and the relative proximity of the crown ethers arranged around the core unit.     

Complexes of dibenzo-24-crown-8 with some sodium monoalkyl benzeneazophosphonates

Syntheses and properties of complexes of dibenzo-24-crown-8 with the sodium monoethyl ester and the sodium monobutyl ester of [α-(4-benzeneazoanilino)-N-benzyl]phosphonic acid, [α-(4-benzeneazoanilino)-N-4-hydroxybenzyl]phosphonic acid and [α-(4-benzeneazoanilino)-N-4-methoxybenzyl]phosphonic acid have been studied. The crystalline complexes formed were found to depend not only on the size of the cation and the crown ether cavity but also on the choice of anion and the reaction solvent. It was shown that the molecular structure and electronic configuration of the anion are important factors in a salt-ligand system which influence the case of solubilization and charge separation in solution. The complexes obtained were characterized on the basis of conductance measurements and UV, IR and ¹H NMR spectra.     

Dibromo and diiodo derivatives of [4.4]dibenzo-24-crown-8 as novel efficient sorbents of elements from mineral acid solutions

The sorption behavior of novel functionalized endoreceptors, halogen (Br, I) derivatives of [4.4]dibenzo-24-crown-8, with respect to sorption of 34 elements from 1–5 M HNO₃ solurions and 29 elements from 1–5 M HCl solutions were studied. The receptors poorly extract elements from nitric acid solutions but are strong sorbents of some elements from concentrated hydrochloric acid solutions. The highest distribution ratios of elements (D, cm³/g) for sorption from 5 M HCl were observed for 4′,4″,5″[4.4]dibromodibenzo-24-crown-8: Au (D = 880) > Ga (469) > Sb (70) > Fe (55) > Sn (14.3) > Mo (10.3) > Re (2.9) > Cd (1.4) > Ge (0.61) > In (0.33) ≈ Zn (0.32) ≈ Ni (0.31) > Zr (0.29) ≈ Cr (0.28) > Sr, Tl (0.25) > Be (0.24) > Mn (0.22) ≈ La (0.21) ≈ Ba (0.20) > Ca, K, Mg, Si (< 0.1). A new way for increasing the sorption properties of dibenzocrown ethers by introducing bromine substituents into the polyether benzene rings was established. The sorption of elements from concentrated hydrochloric acid solutions follows an anion exchange mechanism by analogy with extraction of these elements.

133Cs NMR study of Cs+ ion complexes with dibenzo-21-crown-7 and dibenzo-24-crown-8 in some mixed solvents

Complexation of the cesium ion with macrocyclic ligands, dibenzo-21-crown-7 and dibenzo-24-crown-8, was studied in binary solvent mixtures of dimethylsulfoxide with acetone, acetonitrile, propylene carbonate, pyridine and hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA) as well as in pyridine-methanol mixtures. In the first four binary mixtures the complexation constants increased with decreasing amounts of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), the trend is reversed in the DMSO-HMPA system. In all of the above cases, the variation of the stability constant with composition was monotonic and showed good correlation with the inherent solvating ability of the neat solvents which form the mixture. In the pyridine-methanol system, however, for both complexes, the log K_f vs composition plots show several changes in direction. This behavior is probably due to a change in the structure of this binary solvent as the composition of the medium is varied.     

Synthesis of perylene-bridged bis(dibenzo-24-crown-8) and its assembly behavior with a fullerene-based secondary dibenzylammonium salt

This paper reports the synthesis of a perylene-bridged bis(crown ether) through the condensation reaction between primary amine-armed dibenzo-24-crown-8 and 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride. Pseudorotaxane with a perylene moiety at the wheel and a fullerene unit in the middle of the axle was prepared, which was evidenced by ¹H NMR and fluorescence experiments. Subsequent investigations show that the formation and disassociation of the pseudorotaxane can be controlled by the alternating addition of KPF₆ and 18-crown-6, following the change of the florescence intensity of perylene.

     

Solvent extraction separation of cesium with dibenzo-24-crown-8 from picrate solution

Cesium (25 g) was extracted with 0.03M DB-24-crown-8 at pH 3.0 from 0.01M picric acid in the presence of 2 ml methanol. It was stripped with 3 M perchloric acid and was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The nature of the extracted species was 111. Dichloromethane was a suitable diluent. Nitric and perchloric acid were the best stripping agents. Cesium was not only separated from alkali and alkaline earth elements but also from zirconium, hafnium, thorium, usually present in fission products. The method is applicable for determination of cesium from real samples.

Complex formation of methyl viologen and diquat with macrocyclic ether dibenzo-24-crown-8

The complex formation of a coplanar N,N'-ethylene-bipyridinium dication and dibenzo-24-crown-8 in methanol was detected by electrochemical techniques. It is demonstrated here that a coplanar ring arrangement is not required for an efficient charge-transfer interaction between bipyridinium and crown. The much stronger complexation of methyl viologen was investigated by both electrochemical and spectral techniques. The presence of a benzene ring in the crown molecule is a condition for complex formation. The described complex exerts catalytic activity for the reduction of oxygen.     

Synthesis of thiophene-capped [2]rotaxanes

Two types of thiophene-capped [2]rotaxanes, i.e., bithienyl (2T)- and bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-yl (BEDOT)-capped [2]rotaxanes, were synthesized. The electron-deficient cyclophane of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT⁴⁺) was used as a macrocycle. Association constants for inclusion complexation of 2T- and BEDOT-derivatives with CBPQT⁴⁺ were obtained by ¹H NMR titration. Due to the donor-acceptor charge transfer absorption band, 2T- and BEDOT-capped [2]rotaxanes have red and green colors, respectively. On the basis of electrochemical analysis, we confirmed that only BEDOT-capped [2]rotaxane is a promising candidate for [3]rotaxane synthesis through oxidation coupling of the thiophene unit.     

Synthesis and molecular structure of a substituted 8-oxa-10-azatricyclo [7.3.1.0]tridecatetraene

10,11-Dimethyl-9-(coumarin-3 -yl)-12-ethoxycarbonyl-8-oxa-10-azatricyclo[7,3,1.0^2.7]trideca-2,4,6-11-tetraene was isolated from the mixture of products from the condensation of salicyl aldehyde with acetoacetic ester and methylamine. Thermodynamics of cesium cation complexation with dibenzo-24-crown-8 in mixed nonaqueous solvents

Thermodynamics of complexation of cesium cation by dibenzo-24-crown-8 was studied in three binary solvent mixtures: acetonitrile-nitromethane (AN/NM),N,N-dimethylformamide-nitromethane (DMF/NM) and acetonitrile-propylene carbonate (AN/PC) using the¹³³Cs-NMR technique. In all cases the variation of the formation constant,K _f, with the solvent composition was monotonic:K _f increased as the mole-% of the solvent of low donicity was increased. The temperature dependence ofK _f indicated that the complexes are generally enthalpy stabilized, but entropy destabilized. The enthalpy and entropy of complexation reactions are quite sensitive to the solvent composition. However, their variation with solvent composition was not monotonic but showed maxima or minima at the isosolvation points of the cation or the complexed cation. In all cases an enthalpy-entropy compensating effect was observed.     

2]Pseudorotaxanes, [2]rotaxanes and metal-organic rotaxane frameworks containing tetra-substituted dibenzo[24]crown-8 wheels

[2]Pseudorotaxanes, [2]rotaxanes and metal-organic rotaxane framework materials that utilise DB24C8 as the wheel component are well known and structural variations based on changing the axle component are common. Studies in which the DB24C8 wheel is structurally modified are much more limited. Herein, is described the synthesis of symmetrical DB24C8 analogues containing four CH(2)OR (R = CH(2)CH(2)CH(3), CH(2)(C(6)H(5)), C(6)H(5) and C(6)H(4)(4-COOEt)) substituents on the 4 and 5 positions of the aromatic rings. The effect of these molecular appendages on the stability and structures of the interpenetrated and interlocked molecules derived from these new wheels is described. The major effects are an increase in association constants for the formation of [2]pseudorotaxanes relative to DB24C8, the crystal packing of [2]rotaxanes and a change on the internal structure of a 2D MORF (R = C(6)H(5)) compared to DB24C8.
