ABSTRACT

A series of non-symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers with the same chiral core 1,2-propanediol (PD) have been synthesised, termed as ABBA-PD-TFBA, PBBA-PD-TFBA, ABA-PD-TFBA, PBA-PD-TFBA and AA-PD-TFBA, respectively, in which one of the two mesogenic groups, the fluorinated mesogenic unit, was kept fix and the other arm was different. The intermediate compounds and LC dimers were characterised by FTIR, 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarised optical microscopy and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The results of the measurements indicated that ABBA-PD-TFBA, PBBA-PD-TFBA and ABA-PD-TFBA displayed optical activity and enantiotropic chiral nematic phase, and PBA-PD-TFBA was an enantiotropic nematic LC while AA-PD-TFBA was a monotropic LC, displaying both nematic phase and smectic A phase on cooling. The results indicated that PD was able to induce the chiral nematic phase, nevertheless, the rigidity of the mesogenic arm, the flexibility of the terminal group and even the type of the terminal chemical bond played an important effect on the thermal properties of the dimers, and even on the formation of the chiral nematic phase. It is also worth noting that C=C at the terminal helped to stabilise the LC phase.  相似文献

Seven symmetric liquid crystal (LC) dimers containing different chiral cores and LC arms have been synthesised, termed EPDA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R)PD, TFBA-(R)PD, TFBDA-IB and TFBA-IB, respectively. TFBDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R,S)PD, TFBDA-(R)PD and TFBDA-IB displayed chiral smectic A (SmA*) phase, while EPDA-(R,S)PD, TFBA-(R)PD and TFBA-IB exhibited chiral nematic (N*) phase. The effects of flexible spacer, structural type of LC arms and the chirality of the cores on the thermal properties of the dimers and the formation of N* phase have been studied. The results indicated that the chiral core was prone to induce the N* phase in LC dimer that contained nematic arms although the chirality of the core is very weak, while for the smectic LC arms containing CF3 terminal, the removal of the flexible spacer between chiral core and rigid LC units was conducive to the formation of N* phase. For example, TFBDA-(R)PD and TFBDA-IB displayed SmA* phase, while TFBA-(R)PD and TFBA-IB exhibited N* phase. However TFBA-(R,S)PD did not display N* phase, which reminded us that the chirality of the core and the conformation of the dimer also played an influence in the formation of the LC phase.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of five hydrogen-bonded ferroelectric liquid crystal complexes (HBFLCs) prepared from mesogenic p-n-alkoxy benzoic acids and non-mesogenic propionic/butyric acids with different chiral centres are reported. Complementary intermolecular hydrogen bonding is confirmed through IR study. HBFLCs are found to exhibit chiral nematic (N*), smectic C* (SmC*) and smectic G* (monotropic) phases in their cooling profiles during polarizing thermal microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Phase coexistence regions are observed above the IN* transition. The chiral nematic to smectic C* transition is found to be of first order. The temperature variation of spontaneous polarization exhibited by these HBFLC complexes in their SmC* phase is presented. The effect of non-covalent interaction imparted by the soft hydrogen bonding in these LC complexes on enhanced or induced thermal stability of tilted LC phases is discussed.  相似文献

New isothiocyanato liquid crystal (LC) materials based on thieno[3,2-b]thiophene core have been synthesised and characterised. Their mesomorphic and physical properties were evaluated. The results indicate that most of the new compounds exhibit only enantiotropic smectic A phases with high clearing points, and the difluorinated compounds (A3 and A6), in particular, also display a stable nematic phase with low melting points. Compared with the corresponding biphenyl and thiophene-phenyl analogues, these thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-based compounds possess increased birefringence (the highest value found to be 0.40) and mesogenic phase intervals. These new thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-based LCs exhibit a high birefringence and a high clearing point and are of potential use as components of high birefringence mixtures.  相似文献

Three esters of maltose (A1A3) with 4–(4–(alkoxybenzoyloxy)phenoxy) –6–oxohexanoic acid (b1b3) side-arms have been synthesised. All the maltose derivatives were laevo-rotationary, unlike their parent cores. The side arm b1 did not display liquid crystalline (LC) properties, and b2 and b3 displayed thermotropic nematic LC properties. The star-shaped compound (SSC) A1 with b1 side-arms did not display a mesomorphic phase. Unlike the nematic schlieren texture provided by side-arms b2 and b3, the star-shaped liquid crystals (SSLC) A2 and A3 displayed Grandjean and oily texture in the cholesteric phase. The results suggest that the LC properties of the side-arms have an important influence on the formation of LC properties in an SSC, and that the maltose core is important in determining the mesomorphic phase type. In other words, the SSC displayed LC properties only when the side-arms were also LC, and the maltose core induced a cholesteric phase in the SSLC with nematic side-arms. The mesomorphic regions for A2 and A3 were 39.1 and 53.7°C during the heating cycle and 63.8 and 107.0°C during the cooling cycle, respectively. The longer terminal chain rendered the mesomorphic region broader.

ABSTRACT

Four compounds containing two lactate groups and one perfluorocarbon chain are designed and synthesised, whose chirality is tuned by changing the chirality of the lactic acid residues. (R,S)- and (S,R)-2 stereoiosomers exhibit an enantiotropic SmA phase, while (R,R)- and (S,S)-2 stereoisomers exhibit an enantiotropic SmA phase and an enantiotropic SmCd* one. Therefore, the chirality of the compounds plays an important role in the mesomorphic behaviours of the compounds. The optical activity of these liquid crystals is dominated by the chirality of the lactate group near the core. (R)- and (S)-1 with one lactic acid residue and one perfluorocarbon chain exhibit only an enantiotropic SmA phase.  相似文献

A two new series of materials with a chiral fragment derived from ((S)-()-2-methyl-1-butanol and 6-alkoxy-2-naphathoic acid as the molecular core was synthesised and investigated. All the homologues exhibited enantiotropic mesomorphism. Chiral smectic C (SmC*), smectic A (SmA) and chiral nematic (N*) phases were observed in different homologues. All the compounds were characterised by spectroscopic and elemental analysis. Thermal investigations and mesophase characterisations for all the compounds were carried out by the combination of DSC and POM analysis. The effects of the central linkage and various terminal normal alkyl chains with its structurally related compounds have been discussed.  相似文献

The synthesis of new chiral monomers (M1 ?M3 ) based on menthol and the corresponding polyacrylates (P1 ?P3 ) is described. The chemical structures, formula and phase behaviour of the obtained monomers and polymers were characterised with FT-IR, 1H-NMR, elemental analyses, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effect of the mesogenic core rigidity, spacer length and menthyl steric effect on the phase behaviour of M1 ?M3 and P1 ?P3 is discussed. The expected mesophase of the compounds based on menthol can be obtained by inserting a flexible spacer between the mesogenic core and the terminal groups. For the chiral monomers and polyacrylates, their corresponding melting temperature (T m), glass transition temperature (T g) and clearing temperature (T i) increased with an increase of the mesogenic core rigidity; while the T m, T g and T i decreased with increasing the spacer length. M1 and P1 showed no mesophase, while M2 and M3 all revealed a SmC* and cholesteric phases. P2 and P3 only showed a cholesteric phase.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Phase behaviour and structural properties of two members of biphenylyl benzoate chiral mesogenic series (2F3R and 3F3R) have been investigated. While both the compounds exhibit SmC* phase over a wide temperature range, 2F3R forms orthogonal SmA* from tilted SmC* on heating but 3F3R melts directly to the isotropic phase. The SmA* phase of 2F3R is found to have de vries characteristics with small effective layer contraction. Both the samples on cooling form hexagonal SmF* phase below SmC* phase. On further cooling soft crystal like hexagonal SmJ* phase is formed in 2F3R, undergoing a change in the tilt direction, but in 3F3R, SmG* phase is formed without any change in the tilt direction. A coexistence phase of (SmC*+SmF*) is also observed in a certain temperature range. Slight differences in the dipole moment and molecular conformation of the two molecules give rise to a subtle change in the intermolecular interaction and play an important role in the appearance of different phases in the two compounds. Cell parameters of SmF*, SmG*, SmJ* phases have also been determined. Layer spacings, tilt angles, average intermolecular spacings and correlation lengths have been measured. How some of these properties compare with other members of the series has been discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The synthesis and characterisation of two series of cyanobiphenyl-based liquid crystal dimers containing sulfur links between the spacer and mesogenic units, the 4?-[1,ω-alkanediylbis(thio)]bis-[1,1?-biphenyl]-4-carbonitriles (CBSnSCB), and 4?-({ω-[(4?-cyano[1,1?-biphenyl]-4-yl)oxy]alkyl}thio)[1,1?-biphenyl]-4-carbonitriles (CBSnOCB) are described. The odd members of both series show twist-bend nematic and nematic phases, whereas the even members exhibit only the nematic phase. An analogous cyanoterphenyl-based dimer, 34-{6-[(4?-cyano[1,1?-biphenyl]-4-yl)thio]-hexyl}[11,21:24,31-terphenyl]-14-carbonitrile (CT6SCB), is also reported and shows enantiotropic NTB and N phases. The transitional properties of these dimers are discussed in terms of molecular curvature, flexibility and biaxiality. The same molecular factors also influence the birefringence of nematic phases. Resonant X-ray scattering studies of the twist-bend nematic phase at both the carbon and sulfur absorption edges were performed, which allowed for the determination of critical behaviour of the helical pitch at the transition to the nematic phase, the behaviour was found to be independent of molecular structure. It was also observed that despite the different molecular bending angle and flexibility, in all compounds the helical pitch length far from the N-NTB transition corresponds to 4 longitudinal molecular distances.  相似文献

A series of new chiral monomers (M1–M4) and the corresponding siloxane polymers (P1–P4) containing menthyl groups were synthesised to establish the relationship between their structure and liquid crystalline properties. The effect of the mesogenic core rigidity and the spacer length on the phase behaviour of the monomers and polymers obtained in this study was discussed. The selective reflection of light for the chiral monomers was studied with UV-Vis spectrometer. Polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterise the phase behaviour and thermal stabilities. It was found that these chiral monomers and polymers were beneficial for the formation of the mesophases when a flexible spacer was inserted between the mesogenic core and terminal menthyl groups. M1–M3 showed enantiotropic chiral smectic C phase and cholesteric phase, and monotropic cubic blue phase on cooling cycle. M4 only showed cholesteric phase. P1–P4 showed a smectic A phase. With increasing the mesogenic core rigidity or decreasing the spacer length, the corresponding melting temperatures, glass transition temperatures and isotropic temperatures all increased.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Two series of novel side-chain liquid crystal (LC) polysiloxanes grafted with chiral liquid crystalline dimers containing cholesteryl mesogens were synthesised. The chemical structure and LC properties of comonomers and polymers were characterised by FTIR, 1H-NMR, DSC, TGA, POM and XRD. M1 and M2 were chiral nematic (N*) dimers, and M3 was an achiral LC monomer displaying nematic mesophase in a narrow mesomorphic temperature range, while the copolymers exhibited N* mesophase whose mesomorphic temperature ranges were much wider than those of the comonomers. Moreover, the glass transition temperatures and isotropization temperatures of the polymers all decreased with decreasing the dimer components. Reflection spectra showed that Pa series tend to attain wide-band selective reflection at long wavelengths, while Pb series were more potential at short wavelengths with narrow bandwidths. Decreasing the dimer components led the wavelength of the selective reflection to blue shift, which was an abnormal phenomenon in chiral mixture system.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Chirality induces structural frustration in liquid crystal systems, producing various kinds of chiral frustrated phases, for example, twist grain boundary (TGB) phases, blue phases (BPs) and dark conglomerate (DC) phases. Almost all molecules exhibiting these frustrated phases have a rigid shape. Especially, a bent–core unit is regarded as a key structure for BPs and DC phases. This paper describes that some flexible liquid crystal oligomers being far from a rigid bent–core molecule stabilise these phases. The LC oligomers have a supermolecular structure in which mesogenic units are connected via flexible spacers. By designing intermolecular interactions, they can exhibit various molecular packing structures in the liquid-crystalline phases as follows: chiral dimers inducing TGB phases, U-shaped and T-shaped oligomers stabilising BPs and achiral liquid crystal trimers exhibiting DC phases. I discuss how the designed liquid crystal oligomers produce the chiral frustrated phases.  相似文献

To study structure–mesomorphism relationships of the monomers and polymers based on menthol, four new chiral monomers ( M1 – M4 ) and the corresponding homopolymers ( P1 – P4 ) with menthyl group were synthesized. Their chemical structures, formula, phase behavior, and thermal stability were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, elemental analyses, differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The selective reflection of light was investigated with ultraviolet/visible spectrometer. The influence of the mesogenic core rigidity, spacer length, and menthyl steric effect on the mesomorphism of M1 – M4 and P1 – P4 was examined. By inserting a flexible spacer between the mesogenic core and the terminal menthyl groups, four target monomers and polymers could form the expected mesophase. Moreover, their melting temperature (Tm), glass transition temperature (Tg), clearing temperature (Ti), and mesophase range (ΔT) increased with increasing the mesogenic core rigidity; whereas the Tm and Tg decreased, Ti and ΔT increased with an increase of the spacer length. M1 and M2 showed monotropic and enantiotropic cholesteric phase, respectively, whereas M3 and M4 all revealed chiral smectic C (SmC*), cholesteric and cubic blue phases. In addition, with increasing temperature, the selective reflection of light shifted to the long wavelength region at the SmC* phase range and to the short wavelength region at the cholesteric range, respectively. P1 and P2 only showed a smectic A (SmA) phase, whereas P3 and P4 exhibited the SmC* and SmA phases. All the obtained polymers had very good thermal stability. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Three series of copolymers were prepared from 4-[2-(S)-methyl-3-acryloxy)-4′-methoxy phenyl] benzoate, as the common chiral monomer, and three nonchiral 4-alkyloxy phenyl-4′-(6-acryloxy hexyloxy) benzoates with alkyloxy tail groups containing seven to nine atoms. All of the copolymers exhibited liquid crystalline (LC) behavior over the entire composition ranges studied. It was demonstrated that by changing the length of the alkyloxy unit, significant differences could be induced in the LC phases observed. When the alkyloxy unit was seven atoms long only chiral nematic (N*) phases were detected, whereas lengthening the alkyloxy unit to eight and nine atoms led to the formation of smectic A (SA) and chiral smectic C (S*C ) phases in addition to the N* phase. Films of these materials exhibited selective reflection in the visible region as one would expect from the presence of N* and S*C phases. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Two mesogenic homologous series, 2-[4-(4-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)-2-methylphenylazo]-naphthalenes (I) and 2-[4-(4-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)-3-methylphenylazo]naphthalenes (II) with a lateral methyl group have been synthesized. Both series are purely nematogenic. The mesomorphic properties of both series are compared with each other and also with the properties of other structurally related series to evaluate the effect of the lateral methyl group on mesomorphism. The chiral nematic (N*) mesophase was induced in the system by doping with a derivative of naturally occurring chiral menthol.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

With cholic acid as the core, five multi-arm ester liquid crystals were synthesised with different terminal substituents. B1B5 were mesogenic arms which were linked to multifunctional chiral core cholic acid. The effect of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups on the mesogenic behaviour of the compounds was discussed. All products were structurally well characterised by elemental analysis, 1HNMR, and FT-IR. The phase behaviours were investigated by means of polarised optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. B2, B4, B5 and C2, C4, C5 and D2, D4, D5 exhibited typical nematic texture and belonged to thermotropic enantiotropic nematic liquid crystals. B3, C3 and D3 also displayed typical nematic texture of thermotropic monotropic nematic liquid crystal. B1, C1 and D1 did not have mesogenic performance. Wider mesogenic range for 81.6°C of C5 whose terminal substituent is nitro on heating cycle while 121.1°C on cooling cycle. The results indicated that terminal substituents have a pretty important effect on the mesogenic phase and range of multi-arm liquid crystal compounds. The mesomorphic behaviour of compounds with polar groups terminally substituted performance much better than those without polar groups. In this ester multi-arm liquid crystal system, electron-withdrawing groups terminally substituted behave better than those electron-donating groups substituted.  相似文献

Four symmetric and non-symmetric chiral liquid crystal dimers containing trifluoromethyl groups, termed as TFBA-PD-TFBA, UEBBA-PD-TFBA, UEBA-PD-TFBA and UEA-PD-TFBA, respectively, have been synthesised and characterised. UEA-PD-TFBA exhibited chiral nematic phase, whereas the other three dimers displayed chiral smectic A phase. X-ray diffraction (XRD) has revealed the structure of the smectic A phase for TFBA-PD-TFBA to be intercalated, whereas that for UEBBA-PD-TFBA and UEBA-PD-TFBA to be monolayer and interdigitated, respectively. In addition, the weaker peak corresponding to a shorter layer spacing was observed for UEBBA-PD-TFBA and UEBA-PD-TFBA. Considering the results of XRD measurements and computer simulations, the structural model corresponding to the shorter layer spacing is assigned as horseshoe-like shape. The absence of smectic behaviour for UEA-PD-TFBA reveals that the weaker aromatic–aromatic interactions cannot stabilise the smectic A phase.  相似文献

A new series of multi-arm chiral liquid crystals (LCs) D1–D3 were synthesised and characterised. Cholic acid was used as the core and ω-[4-(p-alkoxybenzoloxy)phenoxycarbonyl]valeric acid (B1–B3) was used as the mesogenic arms, containing different terminal substituent X (B1: X= -OCH3, B2:X= -CH3, B3: X= -Cl). Their structures and mesomorphic properties were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance hydrogen spectrometer, differential scanning calorimetry, polarised optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The mesogenic B1–B3 displayed smectic B phase. The multi-arm LC D1 displayed cholesteric, while D2 and D3 exhibited nematic phase. The formation of cholesteric phase of D1 was affected by both the chiral core – the bulky cholic acid and the polarity of the terminal substituent of the mesogenic arm. That D1 displayed cholesteric phase but D2–D3 did not indicated that the stronger polarity of the terminal group OCH3 of D1 played an important part in stabilising the cholesteric phase. The multi-arm LCs D1–D3 all showed ultraviolet activity. The wavelength of maximum absorption of D1–D3 was affected by the terminal substituent of the mesogenic arm.  相似文献
