ABSTRACT

We synthesized two series of cholesteric liquid-crystal elastomers by hydrosilylation among monomers MA containing a cholesteryl group, MB (MC) containing a phenolic hydroxyl group and MD as the crosslinker. The chemical structures of all the monomers and LCEs were confirmed by 1H NMR and FT-IR. We explored the mesomorphic properties and phase behaviours by TGA, DSC, POM, and XRD. All the LCEs presented elasticity, reversible phase transition, and high thermal stability. For two series of LCEs, the glass transition temperature increased slowly, and the isotropic transition temperature increased obviously. PA-I-PA-V and PB-I-PB-IV displayed selective reflection and colourful Grandjean texture, but PA-VI, PB-V, and PB-VI needed external pressure to show them.  相似文献

We demonstrate dye-doped low threshold polymerised cholesteric liquid crystal (PCLC) film lasers with red, green and blue (RGB) colour. The polymer network structure of lasers, which were fabricated by washing-out/refilling method, enhanced the stability of the laser thus avoiding the external interference like temperature and electromagnetic field and prevented the efficiency of laser dye from decreasing during polymerisation. The proposed RGB PCLC film lasers have application potential in such as coherent light source, multi-wavelength biomedical light source, white laser and other photonic applications.  相似文献

A series of acrylate monomers with alkoxy tails of varying lengths are synthesised and polymerised. The butoxy analogue had a stable enantiotropic cholesteric liquid crystalline phase which formed a grandjean texture when prepared as a thin film between glass slides. The polymer was mixed with a low molar mass nematic liquid crystal in various proportions and the pitch of the chiral nematic phases were determined using a cano‐wedge cell technique. The polymer prepared from (S)‐2‐(4‐butoxyphenyl‐4′‐benzoyloxy)‐1‐methyl ethyl acrylate had a pitch length of 113 nm which indicates that the polymer film could be employed in optical devices requiring selective reflection of light with short wavelengths in the region of 170 nm. ABSTRACT

We propose a universal method of fabricating and operating a multifunctional diffractive optical element (DOE) with light-rewritable geometric phase and reflectance modulations enabled by pattern-aligned photoresponsive liquid crystal superstructures via manipulating the photoalignment layers as well as the phototunable helical pitch of the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) under different light stimuli, i.e. ultraviolet and visible (green) lights. The diffractive behaviour of the fabricated CLC DOE is simultaneously governed by the geometric phase induced by the pattern-aligned CLC and the reflectance (amplitude) modulation attributed to the helical pitch manipulation, endowing the proposed DOE with versatile practical light-controllable characteristics and outstanding performance.  相似文献

Three new achiral five-ring banana-shaped homologous series have been synthesized and their liquid crystalline properties studied by polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and electro-otpical analysis. The compounds consist of two identical mesogenic structures of bis (alkoxycinnamoyloxybenzoates) linked on a different central ring (unsubstituted or methyl-substituted). The length of the terminal alkoxy groups was varied from heptyloxy to dodecyloxy; the hexadecyloxy group was also included in the study. It was found that the polymorphism of compounds can be strongly dependent upon molecular structure in this class of compound. In particular, substituents on the central ring may exert a significant effect on the type of mesophase observed.  相似文献

A new series of two-arm ( MA1 , MA2 ), four-arm ( MA3 ) and six-arm ( MA4 ) chiral liquid crystalline compounds containing isosorbide as the chiral core were synthesised. Four precursors of branched-arm A1–A4 were first obtained, and then were esterised separately with isosorbide to obtain four chiral branched-arm liquid crystals ( MA1–MA4 ). The structure and properties have been characterised. The results show that MA1 was smectic–cholesteric phase with a fan-like and oily streak texture; MA2–MA4 showed a cholesteric phase with oily streak texture, or lined texture and finger print texture. Isosorbide successfully induced a cholesteric phase. The melting point and clearing point values for MA1–MA4 first increased and then decreased. The branched-arm and chiral core quantity affected the liquid crystalline properties. At the same time, the difference in side-arms resulted in different directions of rotation. MA1–MA2 showed right-handed rotation and had selective reflection; MA3–MA4 demonstrated left-handed rotation and did not have selective reflection.  相似文献

In this paper, polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLC) films with LC content as low as 40 wt% were prepared, and the electro‐optical properties were carefully investigated. To accomplish this, different (meth)acrylate copolymerizaiton monomers have been used. The electro‐optical properties and morphologies of the PDLC films were strongly influenced by the chemical structure of copolymerization monomers (hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA), glycidyl methacrylate, hydroxypropyl acrylate) and their feed ratio. Lower driven voltage and higher contrast ratio were achieved when the PDLC films showed a morphology with suitably LC domain size. At high HPMA content, a thin polymer film was formed on the surface of PDLC samples, which is beneficial to decrease the total LC content in PDLC devices. A new model for observing localised optical states in a structure containing a cholesteric liquid crystal is proposed. The dependence of the mode frequency on the angle between directors at the interface of oppositely handed cholesterics is established. The effect of the metal layer thickness on localisation of light at the localised state frequency is studied. Polarisation features of the transmission spectrum are investigated. ABSTRACT

The cholesteric (Ch) phase is an ancient liquid crystal (LC) phase, with its roots dating back to the days of Friedrich Reinitzer. It is most well known for its ability to selectively reflect circularly polarised light with the same rotation handedness as the helical structure, and have found applications in polarising and display devices. Most studies to date utilising the reflective properties of ChLCs, however, have treated ChLCs as simple dielectric mirrors in which light follows the law of reflection. We have recently shown that through controlling the phase of the Ch helix, it is possible to control the phase of reflected light. Because the phase can be controlled over 0–2π, the reflected wavefront from a planar device can be designed to possess non-specular properties, such as deflection and lensing. In this paper, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon by presenting theoretical and experimental results on the dependence of the reflected light phase on the helix phase, and the effect of chiral handedness on the phenomenon. Also, we show that wavefront manipulation based on the same concept can be achieved in Ch blue phases (BPs), which are chiral LCs with three-dimensional periodicity.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Clusters of planar-aligned short-pitch cholesteric liquid crystal spheres generate dynamic colourful patterns due to multiple selective reflections from the radially oriented cholesteric helices in neighbour shells at varying distances. These photonic communication patterns were widely investigated for the cases of both droplets and shells, demonstrating not only intriguing optical phenomena but also potential for applications as new optical elements for photonics, sensing or security pattern generation. However, the optics of these clusters is truly complex and until now only the strongest and most fundamental reflections have been analysed and explained. In this report, we elucidate the origin of a number of more subtle reflections and we explain the extension in space of various spots as well as their internal colour variations.  相似文献

A series of asymmetrically disubstituted liquid crystalline compounds with high birefringence based on phenyldiacetylenes was synthesised by coupling of intermediate molecules with a phenylacetylene fragment. The structures of the intermediates and resulting compounds were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and Matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry. Their liquid crystalline behaviour, including transition temperatures and phase sequences, was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and polarising optical microscopy. As an important parameter, the birefringence was also measured, using polarising light interferometry. The results indicated that the compounds exhibited different liquid crystalline phases in the high temperature region, with high birefringence values. In addition, the selective reflection characteristics associated with birefringence under conditions which maintained the matrix nematic liquid crystal and the concentration of chiral dopant were studied.  相似文献

Formation of gratings upon alternating electric field in compositions of highly birefringent liquid crystal (LC) with novel chiral ionic liquid (CIL) enclosed in 10-µm-thick cells is studied. The compatibility of two organic components of the mixture is investigated. The grating is formed in 1–5% CIL mixtures and causes significant changes of the transmission of polarised light through the cells. Transmission of polarised λ = 633 nm light through the 5% CIL sample is studied with respect to frequency (1 Hz–3 MHz) and amplitude (up to 10 V) of alternating voltage and the results are used for sketch a voltage–frequency phase diagram. Two possible ways of formation of the gratings with perpendicular orientation to that formed from initial state are presented. Two twisting axes in the molecular alignments of the cholesteric LC gratings with perpendicular directions are proposed. Optical switch based on four different states of LC including two gratings with perpendicular directions is proposed. Moreover, behaviour of the rotation of a grating induced by AC field in hybrid planar-homeotropic cell is studied in two frequency regimes and rotation by more than 90° upon change of the AC field amplitude is observed.  相似文献

Liquid crystal (LC) based tuneable optical microresonators are potential for being used as crucial components in photonic devices. In this article, we report experimental studies on LC micro-droplets dispersed in several dispersing media. We find that the size of the micro-droplets formed in a low refractive index and optically transparent perfluoropolymer are most stable with time than commonly used dispersing media. Using a negative dielectric anisotropy nematic liquid crystal, we show that the whispering gallery mode optical resonance properties such as the quality factor and the free spectral range of stable micro-droplets are independent of the strength of the applied electric field. The optical resonance properties under applied field are significantly different than that of the liquid crystals with positive dielectric anisotropy and are explained based on the elastic deformation of the micro-droplets.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Blue phase liquid crystals are soft 3D photonic crystals in which the liquid crystal molecules self-assemble to form a cubic structure with lattice spacing of a few hundred nanometers resulting in selective reflection of colours in the visible spectrum. The corresponding wavelength or the ‘photonic band gap’ can be tuned using various external stimuli such as thermal, electric, magnetic and optical fields. Here, we report efficient tuning of photonic band gap by utilising the combination of electric and optical fields in a blue phase liquid crystalline system. The studies indicate that the chirality of the medium has a direct bearing on the direction of the wavelength shift and the extent of the photonic band gap tunability. More importantly, the synergistic effect of the two fields helps in reversible tuning of the band gap.  相似文献

The influence of an asymmetric periodic grooved cell surface on the 2D static director configuration of a nematic liquid crystal has been investigated. The minimum in the Frank-Oseen free energy was solved numerically with the Rapini-Papoular form of the surface anchoring energy at the nematic-grating interface. Results are presented for the variation of pretilt angle in the tilted bulk director field as a function of the surface groove depth, pitch and asymmetry and the bulk parameters. The simulations demonstrate the existence of two energetically degenerate high and low pretilted bulk alignment configurations. The pretilt values in these two regimes and also for the low tilt regime with finite surface anchoring are consistent with experimental results. An effective increase in the resolution of the model is obtained by using an irregular grid to describe the surface profile.  相似文献

Oblique propagation of light through a planar layer of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) is solved by Ambartsumian’s modified layer addition method. Two cases are considered, namely, the case when dielectric boundaries have a minimum influence on light transmission and the case when the CLC layer is in a vacuum. It is shown that in the first case a total internal reflection can happen for the fast eigen-mode at large incidence angles. New important features of light reflection (transmission) spectra, photonic density of states and accumulated energy density in the CLC layer are studied. The light localisation peculiarities in the CLC layer at oblique incidence is investigated too. It is shown that the light localisation for both the long-wavelength edge mode and the short-wavelength edge mode changes differently when the incidence angle changes. The obtained results can be used in the design of low-threshold lasers, in solar cell systems, in chiral photonics, in systems strongly absorbing light at certain wavelengths and when designing systems with absorption suppression created on the base of absorbing media, etc.  相似文献

The reactivity ratios have been determined for a mesogenic/nonmesogenic comonomer system, namely 5-[4-(4′-methoxyphenyl)phenoxy]pentyl methacrylate/methyl methacrylate. The reactivity ratios were found to be equal and approximately unity. The copolymerization is, therefore, azeotropic and the resulting copolymers possess a random distribution sequence of the two monomers. The thermal properties of the copolymers were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized light microscopy. Copolymers containing 0.56 or greater mol fraction of the mesogenic side-chain exhibited liquid crystallinity, specifically smectic behavior. The glass transition temperatures exhibited a negative deviation from linear behavior on varying the composition. By contrast, the clearing temperatures decrease in essentially a linear fashion as the mol fraction of the nonmesogenic unit is increased. The behavior of these copolymers is compared with a range of materials from the literature, revealing that on increasing backbone flexibility a greater mol fraction of nonmesogenic units can be incorporated into the copolymer structure while retaining liquid crystallinity. ABSTRACT

In this study, we designed, synthesised and characterised two series of cholesteric liquid crystal polymers, QP series and ZP series. With polymethylhydrosiloxane as the main chain, QP series were synthesised by copolymerisation between the monomer M1 containing a cholesteryl mesogenic unit and the monomer M2 with a hydroxyl. ZP series, meanwhile, were synthesised by esterification between QP series members and the monomer M3, a carboxylic acid with an azo mesogenic unit. We characterised chemical structures of all the monomers and polymers by FT-IR and 1H-NMR, which proved that the target monomers and polymers had been obtained. We observed dramatic colour changes after the introduction of monomer M3 and Grandjean textures from both QP series and ZP series using POM. In addition, strong selective reflection could be observed as well. Then, we characterised the thermal properties of polymers by DSC, TGA and XRD to explore their phase transition behaviours further. Their photoresponsive and photochromic properties were characterised by UV-Vis spectrum.  相似文献

Poly[oxy(2-methyl-1,4-phenylene)oxyterephthaloyl-co-oxymethylene-1,4-cyclohexylene-methyleneoxyterephthaloyl] was synthesized using a solution-based process. This copolyester has cyclohexylene dimethylene as a semi-rigid spacer along the polymer main chain to interrupt the inherent rigidity of the system while preserving the mesogenicity of the macromolecules. Polymer characterization includes elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, hot-stage polarized light microscopy, wide-angle x-ray diffraction, dilute solution viscometry, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. This copolyester shows nematic liquid crystalline behavior in polarized light above about 240°C. The intrinsic and inherent viscosities are 0.88 and 0.68 dL/g respectively. The observed melting temperature of this copolyester is about 265°C, but melting begins as low as 215°C, making the polymer readily melt-processable. The degradation temperature is about 340°C under a nitrogen atmosphere. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
