A study of W-pair production in annihilations at LEP is presented, based on candidates corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 57 pb at GeV. Assuming that the angular distributions of the W-pair production and decay, as well as their branching fractions, are described by the Standard Model, the W-pair production cross-section is measured to be pb. Assuming lepton universality and combining with our results from lower centre-of-mass energies, the W branching fraction to hadrons is determined to be %. The number of W-pair candidates and the angular distributions for each final state (, are used to determine the triple gauge boson couplings. After combining these values with our results from lower centre-of-mass energies we obtain , and , where the errors include both statistical and systematic uncertainties and each coupling is determined by setting the other two couplings to the Standard Model value. The fraction of W bosons produced with a longitudinal polarisation is measured to be . All these measurements are consistent with the Standard Model expectations. We have analysed the data collected by OPAL at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209 GeV searching for Higgs boson candidates from the process followed by the decay of where is the CP-odd Higgs boson. The search is done in the region where the mass, , is below the production threshold for , and the CP-even Higgs boson mass is within the range 45-86 GeV/c 2 . In this kinematic range, the decay of may be dominant and previous Higgs boson searches have very small sensitivities. This search can be interpreted within any model that predicts the existence of at least one scalar and one pseudoscalar Higgs boson. No excess of events is observed above the expected Standard Model backgrounds. Model-independent limits on the cross-section for the process are derived assuming 100% decays of the into and 100% decays of the into each of the following final states: , , , , and . The couplings of the fermions to the Z boson are of great importance in establishing the validity of the Standard Model and in looking for physics beyond it. The couplings of the b-quark to the Z boson have been the subject of much experimental study and theoretical interpretation. The apparent excess in the value of , the ratio of the partial width of the Z boson to to its total hadronic width, above the Standard Model expectation reported a few years ago has now become much less significant. However, the measurements of the pole forward-backward asymmetry for b-quarks at the Z pole and of the polarisation parameter , obtained using a polarised electron beam, have improved considerably in accuracy. The latest data are examined and values of the vector and axial-vector b-quark and c-quark couplings to the Z are extracted. The left and right handed couplings are also extracted. It is found that whereas the c-quark couplings are compatible with the Standard Model, those of the b-quark data are only compatible with the Standard Model at about the 1% level. In addition, the individual lepton couplings are extracted and the degree to which the data support the hypothesis of lepton universality is discussed. The sensitivity of the limits from electroweak fits to the Higgs boson mass to these data is examined. Abstract. We report on measurements of hadronic and leptonic cross sections and leptonic forward-backward asymmetries performed with the L3 detector in the years 1993–95. A total luminosity of was collected at centre-of-mass energies and which corresponds to 2.5 million hadronic and 245 thousand leptonic events selected. These data lead to a significantly improved determination of Z parameters. From the total cross sections, combined with our measurements in 1990–92, we obtain the final results: An invisible width of is derived which in the Standard Model yields for the number of light neutrino species . Adding our results on the leptonic forward-backward asymmetries and the tau polarisation, the effective vector and axial-vector coupling constants of the neutral weak current to charged leptons are determined to be and . Including our measurements of the forward-backward and quark charge asymmetries a value for the effective electroweak mixing angle of is derived. All these measurements are in good agreement with the Standard Model of electroweak interactions. Using all our measurements of electroweak observables an upper limit on the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson of GeV is set at 95% confidence level. The enhancement of double Higgs boson production in the extensions of the Standard Model with extra isotriplets is studied. It is found that in see-saw type II model decays of new heavy Higgs can contribute to the double Higgs production cross section as much as Standard Model channels. In Georgi–Machacek model the cross section can be much larger since the custodial symmetry is preserved and the strongest limitation on triplet parameters is removed.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to estimate the Z′ boson mass by using the calculations of the decay width of Z′(ϑ) boson. So, the decay width of the extra Z boson is calculated numerically in effective rank 5 models for different mixing angles ϑ of the model and for different mass values of the extra Z boson. The decay width of Z′ boson to the Standard Model (SM) fermions is found to be between 4.42 and 19.36 GeV and the full decay width of Z′ boson to all particles is found to be between 20.88 and 37.15 GeV. We calculated the full decay width at the angle ϑ ≊ 0 for Z′ and Z 2Z′. The full decay width of Z′ boson is written in a single equation according to our calculations. By using these calculations and the previous works the mass of Z′ boson and the number of generations of the exotic particles are estimated. The article is published in the original.  相似文献

We compare vector boson fusion and quark antiquark annihilation production of vector boson pairs at the LHC and include the effects of anomalous couplings. Results are given for confidence intervals for anomalous couplings at the LHC assuming that measurements will be in agreement with the standard model. We consider all couplings of the general triple vector boson vertex and their correlations. In addition we consider a gauge invariant dimension-six extension of the standard model. Analytical results for the cross sections for quark antiquark annihilation and vector boson fusion with anomalous couplings are given. LEP will be operating at cm energies above W pair threshold from 1996. The process e+e → W+W will provide a unique opportunity to test some important aspects of the Standard Model. The methodology of studying this process has been reviewed in this report. The study of the process will probe at the triple vector boson coupling. This final analysis of hadronic and leptonic cross-sections and of leptonic forward-backward asymmetries in collisions with the OPAL detector makes use of the full LEP 1 data sample comprising of integrated luminosity and selected Z decays. An interpretation of the data in terms of contributions from pure Z exchange and from Z interference allows the parameters of the Z resonance to be determined in a model-independent way. Our results are in good agreement with lepton universality and consistent with the vector and axial-vector couplings predicted in the Standard Model. A fit to the complete dataset yields the fundamental Z resonance parameters: GeV, GeV, nb, , and . Transforming these parameters gives a measurement of the ratio between the decay width into invisible particles and the width to a single species of charged lepton, . Attributing the entire invisible width to neutrino decays and assuming the Standard Model couplings for neutrinos, this translates into a measurement of the effective number of light neutrino species, . Interpreting the data within the context of the Standard Model allows the mass of the top quark, GeV, to be determined through its influence on radiative corrections. Alternatively, utilising the direct external measurement of as an additional constraint leads to a measurement of the strong coupling constant and the mass of the Higgs boson: and GeV. The process of the photoproduction of the chargino and W boson on nonrelativistic neutralinos has been considered within the supersymmetric Standard Model. It has been shown that the energy of the chargino in the limit of high energies of the initial photon approaches a constant limit and its decays are accompanied by the production of leptons with energies in a certain range whose width depends only on the masses of the chargino and neutralino. The importance of this process for the detection of dark matter in the observations of cosmic rays from nearest active galactic nuclei and in experiments at modern colliders has been discussed.  相似文献

We perform a comprehensive analysis of the decays of charginos and neutralinos in the minimal supersymmetric standard model where the neutralino is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle. We focus, in particular, on the three-body decays of the next-to-lightest neutralino and the lightest chargino into the lightest neutralino and fermion–antifermion pairs and include vector boson, Higgs boson and sfermion exchange diagrams, where in the latter contribution the full mixing in the third generation is included. The radiative corrections to the heavy fermion and SUSY particle masses will also be taken into account. We present complete analytical formulae for the Dalitz densities and the integrated partial decay widths in the massless fermion case, as well as the expressions of the differential decay widths including the masses of the final fermions and the polarization of the decaying charginos and neutralinos. We then discuss these decay modes, in particular in scenarios where the parameter is large and in models without universal gaugino masses at the grand unification scale, where some new decay channels, such as decays into gluinos and pairs, open up. The mass of the W boson is determined in ee collisions at LEP by the direct reconstruction of W decays in and events, supplemented by measurements using the kinematic properties of the leptons in the decay channel. The main sample of W pairs is selected from an integrated luminosity of 174 pb collected with the ALEPH detector in 1998 at a centre-of-mass energy of 188.63 GeV. The combined result from all channels is where FSI represents the possible effects of final state interactions in the channel. In a second two-parameter fit to the , and channels, where the W mass and width are decoupled, the average W width is found to be { GeV/}, consistent with the Standard Model prediction. We report on an improved measurement of the mass of theZ 0 boson, its total width and its partial decay widths into hadrons and leptons, as well as the effective axial vector and vector couplings to charged leptons. These measurements are based on a data set of approximately 160 000 hadronicZ 0 decays and 18 000 decays into electrons, muons and taus, recorded by the OPAL experiment at centre of mass energies near the mass of theZ 0. The total width and the partial widths to visible final states, derived from the measured cross sections, are used to extract the invisible width. The effective couplings of theZ 0 to charged leptons are studied using measurements of the lepton pair cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries at the different centre of mass energy points of theZ 0 scan. We consider the Higgs boson production in the gluon-fusion channel to next-to-next-to-leading order within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In particular, we present analytical results for the matching coefficient of the effective theory and study its influence on the total production cross section in the limit where the masses of all MSSM particles coincide. For supersymmetric masses below 500 GeV it is possible to find parameters leading to a significant enhancement of the Standard Model cross section, the K-factors, however, change only marginally.  相似文献

Within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) the production and decay of superpartners can give rise to backgrounds for Higgs boson searches. Here MSSM background processes to the vector boson fusion channel with the Higgs boson decaying into two tau leptons or two W-bosons are investigated, giving rise to dilepton plus missing transverse momentum signals of the Higgs boson. Starting from a scenario with relatively small masses of the supersymmetric (SUSY) particles, with concomitant large cross section of the background processes, one obtains a first conservative estimate of the background. Light chargino pair production plus two jets, lightest and next-to-lightest neutralino production plus two jets as well as slepton pair production plus two jets are identified as important contributions to the irreducible SUSY background. Light chargino and next-to-lightest neutralino production plus two jets and next-to-lightest neutralino pair production plus two jets give rise to reducible backgrounds, which can be larger than the irreducible ones in some scenarios. The relevant distributions are shown and additional cuts for MSSM background reduction are discussed. Extrapolation to larger squark masses is performed and shows that MSSM backgrounds are quite small for squark masses at the current exclusion limits.  相似文献

This paper summarises the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in e + e - collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV performed by the OPAL Collaboration at LEP. The consistency of the data with the background hypothesis and various Higgs boson mass hypotheses is examined. No indication of a signal is found in the data and a lower bound of 112.7 Gev/c2 is obtained on the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson at the 95% CL. The relation between two- and three-jet decays of vector particles is re-examined, with emphasis on the Monte Carlo simulation of multi-boson production processes such as e+e- → W+W-. An extremely simple algorithm is presented which allows one to include an extra gluon jet in two-jet decays while obtaining both momentum conservation and the correct angular correlations described by the complete vector boson production and three-jet decay amplitude.  相似文献

The Michel parameters of the leptonic decays are measured using the OPAL detector at LEP. The parameters , , (with ) and are extracted from the energy spectra of the charged decay leptons and from their energy–energy correlations. A new method involving a global likelihood fit of Monte Carlo generated events with complete detector simulation and background treatment has been applied to the data recorded at center-of-mass energies close to corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 155 pb. If e- universality is assumed and inferring the polarization from neutral current data, the measured Michel parameters are: where the value of has been constrained using the published OPAL measurements of the leptonic branching ratios and the lifetime. Limits on non-standard coupling constants and on the masses of new gauge bosons are obtained. The results are in agreement with the V–A prediction of the Standard Model. We review the realization of the Brout–Englert–Higgs mechanism in the electroweak theory and describe the experimental and theoretical constraints on the mass of the single Higgs boson expected in the minimal Standard Model. We also discuss the couplings of this Higgs boson and its possible decay modes as functions of its unknown mass. We then review the structure of the Higgs sector in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM), noting the importance of loop corrections to the masses of its five physical Higgs bosons.
