Glass cells play an important role in polarized 3He neutron spin filters. To evaluate the scattering and absorption contribution from glass cells during neutron scattering experiments, we measured small-angle scattering and neutron transmission in GE180 and other glasses. The small-angle neutron scattering measurements revealed that the glasses used for 3He spin filters have acceptably lower scattering: (Q)/=4-7×10−4 cm−1 at Q=0.03-0.12 Å−1. The transmission measurement was performed at J-PARC. Neutron transmission of about 92% through empty GE180 cells was observed over a wide wavelength range 0.014-7.0 Å. To pursue the possibility of being a structural influence on 3He spin relaxation in GE180 glass cells, we performed precise X-ray diffraction measurement using synchrotron radiation at SPring-8. From these measurements, a structural difference was observed among GE180 glasses with different thermal treatments.  相似文献

From Yb170 M?ssbauer measurements on YbNi5, we establish: the Yb3+ ground state Kramers doublet is well isolated and has uniaxial anisotropy, the compound magnetically orders at 0.55 K, the Yb3+ moments are aligned along the hexagonal axis, they have a saturated value of 3.9μB and a thermal variation close to a mean field S = 1/2 law. We obtain the strength of the Yb3+–Yb3+ coupling which we find is considerably smaller than that between the rare earths (R3+) in the other RNi5. From a study of the spin dynamics, we find that dynamic short range order is present just above the ordering temperature and that above 2 K, the relaxation rate of the paramagnetic Yb3+ spins follows a T-linear Korringa law with a relatively pronounced slope which we link to a high density of states at the Fermi level. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements establish the ferromagnetic nature of the Yb3+–Yb3+ coupling. We comment on the Yb3+ crystal field properties.  相似文献

A magnetic induction threshold B c above which the magnetoplastic effect — depinning of dislocations from paramagnetic pinning centers — can be observed in samples placed in a magnetic field is predicted and observed in Al, NaCl, and LiF crystals. The existence of a threshold is associated with the fact that for B<B c the spin-lattice relaxation time τsl in a dislocation-paramagnetic-center system is less than the time required for spin evolution in a magnetic field resulting in the removal of the spin forbiddenness of an electronic transition that “switches off” the dislocation-pinning-center interaction. It is shown that the threshold field B c is sensitive to temperature and x-ray irradiation of the samples. A new method for measuring the spin-lattice relaxation time in paramagnetic centers on dislocations is proposed on the basis of the data obtained. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. We have recently developed a method of studying spin diffusion coefficients by doping the materials with paramagnetic centers and measuring the nuclear relaxation in a tilted rotating frame. Using this method, we measure here the spin diffusion coefficient of orthoterphenyl, a molecular organic glass, and of three polymer glasses: poly(4-vinylpyridine), poly(vinylacetate) and poly(methyl methacrylate). We explore a possible dependence of the measured orthoterphenyl spin diffusion coefficient on the electronic relaxation time and concentration of the paramagnetic centers. We conclude that the experiments can be performed at higher concentrations than previously thought. We also show that our method applies to polymers in the glassy state if one works at sufficiently small tilt angle, in spite of a short value ofT . We had anticipated that the distribution of proton pairs in these materials precludes the standard dependence of the spin diffusion coefficient on the proton density and free induction decay characteristic decay time. Two-frequency continuous-wave and pulse EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) spectroscopical techniques are applied to determine static and dynamic EPR parameters of Cu2+ ions in oxide and fluoride glasses. The investigations are focussed on the analysis of strain effects in the glassy matrices, the identification of the magnetic nuclei in the vicinity of Cu2+ ions as well as the determination of the dependence of the phase memory timeT M on temperature and resonance field. The results obtained by X-band continuous-wave EPR, X- and S-band echo-detected EPR, and X- and S-band electron spin echo envelope modulation studies of Cu2+-doped inorganic glasses yield information on the local symmetry of the Cu2+ coordination polyhedra, the chemical nature of the atoms in the second and higher coordination spheres, the distribution of the parameters of the static spin Hamiltonian and the low-temperature motions of the dopant-containing structural units. Special techniques like 2-D Mims ENDOR (electron nuclear double resonance) and hyperfine-correlated ENDOR are applied for the first time to doped inorganic glasses. From the spin relaxation measurements a stronger tendency of the Cu2+ ions to aggregate is found for fluoride glasses in comparison to aluminosilicate and phosphate glasses.  相似文献

In anticipation of using fluctuations in the nuclear dipolar and quadrupolar interaction as a probe of lithium ion motion in lithium borate glasses, the static values of these interactions were measured using a variety of echo techniques. The static quadrupolar echo spectrum of 7Li and a calculation of the dipolar interaction in crystalline Li2B4O7 (same chemical composition as the glass under study) were used to estimate the strength of the two interactions. These indicate that the dipolar and quadrupolar interactions for 6Li will be of similar size and the dipolar interaction will be dominated by the unlike spin interaction between the 6Li and the 10B, 11B spins. An appropriate theoretical model is proposed and explicit expressions for the echo amplitude are calculated in terms of the dipolar and quadrupolar second moments. This single spin model takes into account the quadrupolar interaction but treats the dipolar interaction as an effective magnetic field. Experimental results are presented which show the essential validity of the model and measurements lead to reasonable values for the dipolar and quadrupolar second moments. The relative merits of the various echo techniques are discussed.  相似文献

We show that the dynamics of disordered charge density waves (CDWs) and spin density waves (SDWs) is a collective phenomenon. The very low temperature specific heat relaxation experiments are characterized by: (i) “interrupted” ageing (meaning that there is a maximal relaxation time); and (ii) a broad power-law spectrum of relaxation times which is the signature of a collective phenomenon. We propose a random energy model that can reproduce these two observations and from which it is possible to obtain an estimate of the glass cross-over temperature (typically T g≃ 100-200 mK). The broad relaxation time spectrum can also be obtained from the solutions of two microscopic models involving randomly distributed solitons. The collective behavior is similar to domain growth dynamics in the presence of disorder and can be described by the dynamical renormalization group that was proposed recently for the one dimensional random field Ising model [D.S. Fisher, P. Le Doussal, C. Monthus, Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 3539 (1998)]. The typical relaxation time scales like ∼τexp(T g/T). The glass cross-over temperature Tg related to correlations among solitons is equal to the average energy barrier and scales like T g∼ 2xξΔ. x is the concentration of defects, ξ the correlation length of the CDW or SDW and Δ the charge or spin gap. Glasses with composition xBi2O3 ·(0.30 - x)BaO · 0.70B2O3 have been prepared in the range (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.15) containing 2.0 mol% of V2O5. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), optical transmission and absorption spectra and DC conductivity of these glasses have been studied. The spin Hamiltonian parameters (SHP) of VO2+ ions, dipolar hyperfine coupling parameter P, Fermi contact interaction parameter K, and molecular orbital coefficients (α2 and γ2) have been calculated. The SHP arc related with the theoretical optical basicity. Ath. The position of the absorption edge and the values of the optical band gap have also been reported. The effect of addition of Bi2O3 on the DC conductivity has also been studied.  相似文献

The results on the magnetic field dependence of the intensity of a microwave echo in silicate glasses containing paramagnetic impurities are used to construct a model of the formation of an echo as a super-position of an acoustic electron spin echo of the system of paramagnetic impurities and a polarization echo of the ensemble of quartz microcrystals present in the glass. Representing microcrystals in the glass as an ensemble of acoustic oscillators makes it possible to explain the anomalous low-temperature specific heat of glasses without invoking the model of localized two-level tunneling centers. Room temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra and temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility data have been obtained on bulk x(ZnO,Fe2O3)(65−x)SiO220(CaO, P2O5)15Na2O (6≤x≤21 mole%) glasses prepared by melt quenching method. EPR spectra of the glasses revealed absorptions centered at g≈2.1 and 4.3. The variations of the intensity and line width of these absorption lines with composition have been interpreted in terms of the variation in the concentration of the Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions in the glass and the interaction between the iron ions. EPR and magnetic susceptibility data of the glasses reveal that both Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions are present in the glasses, with their relative concentration being dependent on the glass composition. The studies reveal superexchange type interactions in these glasses, which are strongly dependent on their iron content.  相似文献

Laser optical pumping in low magnetic field provides very high nuclear polarizations in gaseous helium mixtures, and is used to prepare polarized liquid. Wall relaxation in glass cells is effiently reduced using cesium coatings, and bulk longitudinal relaxation times are measured. In highly magnetized samples, dipolar fields control the spin dynamics in anisotropic volumes and weak external magnetic field inhomogeneities. Long lived magnetostatic modes are observed by pulsed NMR. Detailed analysis of their frequency and damping gives information on magnetization density and spin diffusion coefficient in polarized mixtures. Experiments are performed above 0.2 K on mixtures with3He concentrations of order a few percents or larger. When phase separation occurs, the3He-rich phase retains a high polarization.  相似文献

It is shown that the formation of tunnel paramagnetic centers — triplet spin centers with a strongly different adiabatic potential in different spin states — can form in copper oxides based on CuO clusters. The results of measurements of the magnetization and magnetostriction of CuO single crystals are reported. The theory of spin diffusion was extended to the case of nuclear dipolar order in solids containing paramagnetic impurities and nuclei with spin I > 1/2 having nuclear quadrupole moment. We show that spin diffusion process of dipolar order takes place in solids containing paramagnetic impurities. At the start of relaxation process, the direct relaxation regime is realized with non-exponential time dependence. Then the relaxation regime will be changed to diffusion-limited one. Using obtained expressions for the spin lattice relaxation times for these two relaxation regimes, the diffusion coefficient of the dipolar order in nuclear quadrupole resonance can be estimated from experimental data.  相似文献

The magnetic properties of 25SiO2–50CaO–15P2O5–(10−x)Fe2O3xZnO (where x=0, 2, 5 mol%) glass and glass-ceramics have been studied. These glasses are prepared by melt quench technique and heat treated at 800 °C for 6 h. Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) revealed that the fraction of non-bridging oxygen decreases with the increase in zinc oxide content. Evolution of crystalline phases in glass-ceramics has been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microstructure as seen by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) exhibits formation of nanosize particles. Effect of controlled heat treatment on magnetic properties was studied by means of a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) magnetometer. Mössbauer spectroscopy at room temperature was also carried out to determine the state of iron ions in glasses and glass-ceramics. Isomer shift values of the glasses suggest that Fe3+ and Fe2+ are in tetrahedral coordination. The analysis of the glass without ZnO shows about 58 wt% of total iron ions is in the Fe3+ state. The samples on heat treatment show improved magnetic properties due to the formation of magnetic nanoparticles. Magnetic studies revealed the relaxation of magnetic particles and the increase in saturation magnetization with addition of 2 mol% ZnO. Increase in ZnO content results in decrease in the strength of dipolar interactions.  相似文献

The spin dynamics in the reentrant spin glass ( Fe0.65 Ni0.35)1-x Mn_x has been studied by zero, longitudinal and transverse field μSR. In the ferromagnetic reentrant and pure spin glass regimes (x\leqslant 0.175), zero field experiments reveal a stretched exponential muon relaxation with a universal behaviour of the dynamic exponent \beta above the spin glass transition. There are no qualitative differences between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. In transversal field μSR experiments the divergence of the relaxation rate close to the spin glass transition is suppressed for manganese doping up to x=0.113 but enhanced for slightly higher doping (x\geqslant 0.12). We understand this behaviour as a crossover from an itinerant to a more localized state of the 3d electron system. This is also supported by the fact that in the highly doped regime with dominant antiferromagnetic interactions the muon relaxation rate diverges above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature. We investigate finite temperature corrections to the Landauer formula due to electron–electron interaction within the quantum point contact. When the Fermi level is close to the barrier height, the conducting wavefunctions become peaked on the barrier, enhancing the electron–electron interaction. At the same time, away from the contact the interaction is strongly suppressed by screening. To describe electron transport we formulate and solve a kinetic equation for the density matrix of electrons. The correction to the conductance G is negative and strongly enhanced in the region 0.5 × 2e2/h ≤ G ≤ 1.0 × 2e2/h. Our results for conductance agree with the so-called “0.7 structure” observed in experiments.  相似文献

The paramagnetic (μ-O) state formed at the oxygen site in high Tc LaSrCuO was used to probe an interaction between the localized moment of the paramagnetic electron and the conduction electrons via zero field μ- spin relaxation. The enhanced relaxation rates consistently observed in the superconducting state of various Sr concentrations are explained as an effect of spin‐pairing in the high Tc supercurrent. We present results of LDA calculations (band structure, densities of states, Fermi surfaces) for possible iron based superconductor BaFe2Se3 (Ba123) in normal (paramagnetic) phase. Results are briefly compared with similar data on prototype BaFe2As2 and (K,Cs)Fe2Se2 superconductors. Without doping this system is anti-ferromagnetic with T Nexp ∼ 250 K and rather complicated magnetic structure. Neutron diffraction experiments indicated the possibility of two possible spin structures (antiferromagnetically ordered “plaquettes” or “zigzags”), indistinguishable by neutron scattering. Using LSDA calculated exchange parameters we estimate Neel temperatures for both spin structures within the molecular field approximation and show τ1 (plaquettes) spin configuration to be more favorable than τ2 (zigzags).  相似文献

A progress report will be presented on recent applications of μSR to problems in metallic systems, i. e. hydrogen (μ+) induced lattice relaxation, quantum diffusion, μ+-Knight shift anisotropy in bismuth, spin glasses and heavy electron systems.
