We examine the decay dynamics of a free four-level system in the -V configuration. Quantum interference strongly manifests itself in this system, as can be seen by looking at the combined spectral distribution of the two emitted photons and at the time evolution of the intermediate-level populations, whose effective lifetimes can become very long under certain conditions for the atomic parameters. This effect is attributable to a population transfer mechanism induced in the time evolution equations by the Fano terms, also responsible for the strong modifications of the spectral correlation between the emitted photons which we analyze in detail. A theoretical analysis of the spectral linewidth of V-type inversionless and Raman lasers is presented. First, we examine the effects of the atomic coherence between dressed states and the Autler-Townes splitting on the linewidth. It is demonstrated that near above threshold, the V inversionless laser has a narrower linewidth than that of the two-level laser. Instead of the dressed coherence, it is the Autler-Townes splitting that is responsible for the linewidth reduction though the dressed coherence determines the laser gain. Next, we explore the effects of the generated laser intensity on the linewidth. It is shown that the linewidths of the V inversionless and Raman lasers follow the usual 1/I decrease for smaller laser intensity I, but a slower decrease than 1/I for larger laser intensity. For the V Raman laser, even more surprisingly, with the laser intensity increasing, the linewidth appreciably increases as well. As a result, well above threshold, the V inversionless and Raman lasers may have a larger linewidth than that of the two-level laser. Finally, a comparison is made between the V lasers and the Λ lasers. It is found that the linewidth of the Λ inversionless laser shows a fast 1/I 2 decay under optimum conditions. On the basis of the precisely recorded 706.52 nm He I line shape we have obtained the basic plasma parameters i.e. electron temperature (T) and electron density (N) using our new line deconvolution procedure in the case of five various plasmas created in a linear, low-pressure, pulsed arc discharge. Plasma parameters have been also measured using independent experimental diagnostical techniques. Excellent agreement was found among the two sets of the obtained parameters. This enables our deconvolution procedure to recommendation for plasma diagnostical purposes, especially in astrophysics where direct measurements of the plasma parameters (T and N) are not possible. Besides, on the basis of the observed asymmetry of the Stark broadened line profile we have obtained its ion broadening parameter (A) caused by influence of the ion microfield to the line broadening mechanism and also the influence of the ion dynamic effect (D) to the line shape. Our A and D parameters represent the first data obtained experimentally using the line profile deconvolution procedure. We have found stronger influence of the ion contribution to the 706.52 nm He I line profile than the existing theoretical approximations estimate. Characteristics of the Stark broadened and overlapping 447.1 nm He I spectral line and its forbidden 447.0 nm components have been measured at electron densities between 4.4×1022 m-3 and 8.2×1022 m-3 and electron temperatures between 18 000 K and 33 000 K in plasmas created in five various discharge conditions using the low pressure pulsed arc as an optically thin plasma source operated in helium-nitrogen-oxygen gas mixture. Good agreement was found among our measured line characteristics and their existing calculated values, based on the quasistatic approximation. Possible influence of the singly ionized oxygen impurity atoms (O II) on the intensity values of the dip between allowed and forbidden components was found that can explain the disagreement among some existing experimental and calculated line characteristics data, at higher electron temperatures and densities. On the basis of the observed asymmetry of the 447.1 nm spectral line profile we have obtained the ion contribution parameter at 1022 m-3 electron density and 8 000 K electron temperature. In this paper a detailed experimental study of Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) effect on sodium induced by a dye-laser operating in a three-mode regime is presented and a detailed analysis of the role of velocity changing collisions is made. These collisions show a very small relaxation effect on the dark resonances which are visible even at high pressures. For the first time we demonstrate the persistence of the ground state coherence to pressures up to one atmosphere for a relatively “heavy” buffer gas like argon. The experimental results have been compared with theory and a very good agreement has been obtained. This paper is concerned with lineshifts of hydrogen-like ions due to electron collisions in dense and hot plasmas. These collisions are treated by including all effects due to monopole, dipole, and quadrupole interactions between radiator and electron perturbers. The latter follow exact hyperbolic trajectories with a possible penetrating part inside atomic orbits. A simple closed form for the line shift has been derived. Comparison between our semi-classical results and the quantum mechanical ones shows good agreement for a large range of high electron densities and temperatures. A study of hydrogen lines emitted in dense and low temperature plasmas is presented. Coupling and ionization effects in a transition from impact to quasi-static broadening for electrons are analyzed with the help of the Frequency Fluctuation Model (FFM). Electron broadening of Balmer series lines is studied for different densities and temperatures spanning a wide domain from impact to quasi-static limit. It is shown that electronic broadening makes a transition from impact to quasi-static limit depending on plasma conditions and principal quantum number. Even for the Balmer alpha line, at a density equals 1018 cm-3 and a temperature equals 1 eV, this transition occurs both in the wings and the core of the line.  相似文献

Spectral line widths of the light alkalies are presented for conditions prevailing in brown dwarf atmospheres. A unified line shape theory and a set of pseudopotentials are used to compute widths of Li, Na, and K resonance lines perturbed by He and H2. While limited available experimental data confirm the trends found in the theoretical values reported here, they suggest that improved potentials are needed.  相似文献

A theory of van der Waals (vdW) interaction between an atom (in ground or excited state) and a birefringent dielectric surface with an arbitrary orientation of the principal optic axis (C-axis) is presented. Our theoretical approach is based on quantum-mechanical linear response theory, using generalized susceptibilities for both atom and electromagnetic field. Resonant atom-surface coupling is predicted for excited-state atoms interacting with a dispersive dielectric surface, when an atom de-excitation channel gets into resonance with a surface polariton mode. In the non-retarded regime, this resonant coupling can lead to enhanced attractive or repulsive vdW surface forces, as well as to a dissipative coupling increasing the excited-state relaxation. We show that the strongly non-scalar character of the interaction with the birefringent surface produces a C-axis-dependent symmetry-breaking of the atomic wavefunction. Changes of the C-axis orientation may also lead to a frequency shift of the surface polariton mode, allowing for tuning on or off the resonant coupling, resulting in a special type of engineering of surface forces. This is analysed here in the case of cesium 6D 3/2 level interacting with a sapphire interface, where it is shown that an adequate choice of the sapphire C-axis orientation allows one to transform vdW surface attraction into repulsion, and to interpret recent experimental observations based on selective reflection methods [H. We present a theoretical profile of the Lyman line of atomic hydrogen perturbed by collisions with neutral hydrogen atoms and protons. We use a general unified theory in which the electric dipole moment varies during a collision. A collision-induced satellite appears on Lyman , correlated to the asymptotically forbidden transition of H2. As a consequence, the appearance of the line wing between Lyman and Lyman is shown to be sensitive to the relative abundance of hydrogen ions and neutral atoms, and thereby to provide a temperature diagnostic for stellar atmospheres and laboratory plasmas. This paper deals with the apparent superluminal propagation of electromagnetic pulses in a linear dispersive medium. One specifically examines the possibility that the pulse leaving the medium may be nearly identical to the incident one (low distortion) and in significant advance of it (strongly negative group-delays). Favourable conditions are obtained in a dilute medium where the required anomalous dispersion originates in an ensemble of narrow absorption or gain lines. Analytical expressions of the advancement of the pulse centre-of-gravity and of the lowest order distortion are established from the transfer-function of the medium. The experiments already achieved with arrangements involving a single absorption-line or a gain-doublet are analysed in detail and compared. The considerable difficulties to overcome in order to attain advancements comparable to the pulse width without important distortion are pointed out. New and promising schemes involving a narrow dip in a gain profile or absorption-doublets are proposed. We theoretically investigate the features of two-photon absorption in a five-level atomic system with interacting dark resonances. It is found that two-photon absorption can be completely suppressed at two different frequencies due to the application of two coherent coupling fields and the atomic system exhibits double electromagnetically induced transparency windows against two-photon absorption. The position and width of the double two-photon transparency windows can be controlled via properly adjusting the frequency detuning and the intensities of the two coupling fields. In addition, one enhanced narrow central line can be observed in the two-photon absorption spectra, which may find applications in high-precision spectroscopy. Form a physical point of view, we explicitly explain these results in terms of quantum interference induced by three different two-photon excitation channels in the dressed-state picture.  相似文献

We present direct observation of the velocity-selective optical pumping of the Cs ground state hyperfine levels induced by the femtosecond (fs) laser oscillator centered at either D2 (6 2S1/2↦6 2P3/2, 852 nm) or D1 (6 P1/2, 894 nm) cesium line. We utilized previously developed modified direct frequency comb spectroscopy (DFCS) which uses a fixed frequency comb for the excitation and a weak cw scanning probe laser centered at the 133Cs 6 2S1/2↦6 2P3/2 transition (D2 line) for ground levels population monitoring. The frequency comb excitation changes the usual Doppler absorption profile into a specific periodic, comblike structure. The mechanism of the velocity selective population transfer between the Cs ground state hyperfine levels induced by fs pulse train excitation is verified in a theoretical treatment of the multilevel atomic system subjected to a pulse train resonant field interaction.  相似文献

In this work, the effects caused by different chemical combination and external magnetic field in several copper and zinc compounds (Cu, CuBr, Cu2O, CuI, CuCl, Cu2Te, Cu5Si, CuSO4, CuSeO4.5H2O, CuCl2, Cu(NO3)2, CuS, CuSe, CuF2, CuF2.3H2O, CuBr2, Cu(ClO4)2.6H2O, Zn, ZnSO4.5H2O, Zn(C2H3O2)2, ZnF2, Zn(NO3)2.6H2O, ZnO, ZnS, ZnSe, ZnTe and ZnF2.4H2O) were studied using a Si(Li) detector. The samples were excited by 22.69 keV X-rays from 109Cd point radioactive source of strength 10 mCi in the external magnetic field of intensities 0.6 T and 1.2 T. The shift, asymmetry, FWHM and Kβ/Kα intensity ratio values were determined. For B = 0, the present experimental results were compared with the experimental and theoretical data in literature. The results have shown that the atomic parameters such as energy shifts, asymmetry indices, FWHM and Kβ/Kα intensity ratios can change when irradiation is conducted in a magnetic field.  相似文献

We report results of a theoretical and experimental study of the ground state nonlinear Hanle effect under strong laser excitation. It is shown that besides the well-known zero-magnetic field suppression of absorption on F g = FF e = F - 1 transitions caused by population trapping, an optical pumping induced enhanced absorption occurs on F g = FF e = F + 1 transitions for small B-fields. The latter effect becomes more pronounced for high F values. The experiment with atomic vapor of Cs (D2 line, F g = 4) confirms an increase of the spectrally unresolved fluorescence yield at zero magnetic field and 600 mW/cm2 laser intensity by 9% or 42%, when excitation occurs with linearly or circularly polarized light, respectively. The results of the experiment agree with numerical simulation studies using equations of motion for a density matrix. We present an advanced theory of charge-exchange-caused dips (also called X-dips) in spectral lines from laser-produced plasmas. We compare predictions of this advanced theory with our previously published experimental results where, in the process of a laser irradiation of targets made out of aluminum carbide, we observed two X-dips in the L γ line of Al XIII perturbed by fully stripped carbon. We show that our advanced theory is in excellent agreement with our experimental results. From the practical point of view, our results open up a way to experimentally produce not-yet-available fundamental data on charge exchange between multicharged ions, virtually inaccessible by other experimental methods. From the theoretical viewpoint, the results are important because the X-dips are the only one signature of charge exchange in profiles of spectral lines emitted by plasmas and they are the only one quasimolecular phenomenon that could be observed at relatively “low” densities of laser-produced plasmas. A five-level system to control the wavelength of the in-line amplifier by the quantum interference is proposed. It is found that the gains of the first and the second probe can be adjusted by changing the coherent field and the incoherent pumping. Four-wave mixing in resonant atomic vapors based on maximum coherence induced by Stark-chirped rapid adiabatic passage (SCRAP) is investigated theoretically. We show the advantages of a coupling scheme involving maximum coherence and demonstrate how a large atomic coherence between a ground and an highly excited state can be prepared by SCRAP. Full analytic solutions of the field propagation problem taking into account pump field depletion are derived. The solutions are obtained with the help of an Hamiltonian approach which in the adiabatic limit permits to reduce the full set of Maxwell-Bloch equations to simple canonical equations of Hamiltonian mechanics for the field variables. It is found that the conversion efficiency reached is largely enhanced if the phase mismatch induced by linear refraction is compensated. A detailed analysis of the phase matching conditions shows, however, that the phase mismatch contribution from the Kerr effect cannot be compensated simultaneously with linear refraction contribution. Therefore, the conversion efficiency in a coupling scheme involving maximum coherence prepared by SCRAP is high, but not equal to unity. Stark broadening measurements and calculations of the Paschen γ spectral line of hydrogen ( λ = 1.094[: MU :] m) are reported. Investigations have been performed at plasma electron densities between 1.4×10 15 cm -3 and 3.7×10 15 cm -3 . As the light source a wall-stabilized arc operated in a helium-hydrogen gas mixture at atmospheric pressure has been applied. The radiation of the plasma emitted from nearly homogeneous plasma layers in end-on direction, was measured with the use of a grating spectrometer equipped with a charge coupled device (CCD) detector. The radiance calibration was carried out against light outputs originating from a tungsten strip radiation standard. The measured FWHM are compared with results of our calculations based on computer simulation techniques (full computer simulation method -- FCSM). Our broadening data are also compared with results of other theoretical approaches (MM-method, quasi-static approximation) and with experimental data obtained at electron densities about one order of magnitude larger than ours.
