We studied the electrocatalytic activity of an [FeFe]-hydrogenase from Clostridium acetobutylicum (CaH2ase) immobilized on single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) networks. SWNT networks were prepared on carbon cloth by ultrasonic spraying of suspensions with predetermined ratios of metallic and semiconducting nanotubes. Current densities for both proton reduction and hydrogen oxidation electrocatalytic activities were at least 1 order of magnitude higher when hydrogenase was immobilized onto SWNT networks with high metallic tube (m-SWNT) content in comparison to hydrogenase supported on networks with low metallic tube content or when SWNTs were absent. We conclude that the increase in electrocatalytic activities in the presence of SWNTs was mainly due to the m-SWNT fraction and can be attributed to (i) substantial increases in the active electrode surface area, and (ii) improved electronic coupling between CaH2ase redox-active sites and the electrode surface.  相似文献

Various SWNT samples as either catalyst or catalytic support were used in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method for the growth of MWNTs. Catalysts were prepared by the impregnation of SWNT soot with different transition metals. Decomposition of acetylene was investigated at different temperatures (650–720 °C). The quality of both original SWNTs and the newly formed carbon nanostructures was assessed by TEM. A significant difference was found between selectivities of original (known as metallic impurities in SWNT soot) and the posteriorly deposited metallic particles. In the presence of active catalyst SWNT ropes tend to disappear, absorbed into carbon fibers or MWNTs.  相似文献

Semiconducting-only single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network field effect transistors (FETs) have been fabricated by selectively reacting all the metallic SWNTs in the devices with diazonium reagents in a controlled manner. We have shown that the concentration of diazonium reagents used is crucial for selectively eliminating metallic SWNTs and keeping semiconducting ones intact. Excessive amounts of diazonium reagents can indiscriminately react with both metallic and semiconducting SWNTs and thus degrade the performance of the devices. This new technique will facilitate the process of fabrication of high-performance SWNT-based electronic devices.  相似文献

The electrochemical response of two-dimensional networks of pristine single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been investigated. SWNTs were grown by catalyzed chemical vapor deposition on an insulating SiO2 substrate, and then electrically contacted by lithographically defined Au electrodes. Subsequent insulation of the contact electrodes enabled the electrochemical properties of the SWNT network to be isolated and directly studied for the first time. The electrochemical activity of the SWNT network was found to be strongly dependent on the applied potential. For the same SWNT electrode, the limiting current for the oxidation of 5 mM Fe(phen)32+ was found to be much greater than expected based on the signal for the reduction of 5 mM Ru(NH3)63+. Simultaneous conductance and electrochemical measurements demonstrated decreasing conductance as the potential was scanned negative (versus Ag/AgCl) with the minimum conductance at around the reduction potential for Ru(NH3)63+. These results are consistent with the presence of both metallic and semiconducting SWNTs in the SWNT network electrode. Moreover, these results show that through appropriate choice of mediator and electrode potential, metallic SWNTs can be electrochemically addressed independently of semiconducting SWNTs.  相似文献

It remains an elusive goal to obtain high performance single-walled carbon-nanotube (SWNT) electronics such as field effect transistors (FETs) composed of single- or few-chirality SWNTs, due to broad distributions in as-grown materials. Much progress has been made by various separation approaches to obtain materials enriched in metal or semiconducting nanotubes or even in single chiralties. However, research in validating SWNT separations by electrical transport measurements and building functional electronic devices has been scarce. Here, we performed length, diameter, and chirality separation of DNA functionalized HiPco SWNTs by chromatography methods, and we characterized the chiralities by photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy, optical absorption spectroscopy, and electrical transport measurements. The use of these combined methods provided deeper insight to the degree of separation than either technique alone. Separation of SWNTs by chirality and diameter occurred at varying degrees that decreased with increasing tube diameter. This calls for new separation methods capable of metallicity or chirality separation of large diameter SWNTs (in the approximately 1.5 nm range) needed for high performance nanoelectronics. With most of the separated fractions enriched in semiconducting SWNTs, nanotubes placed in parallel in short-channel (approximately 200 nm) electrical devices fail to produce FETs with high on/off switching, indicating incomplete elimination of metallic species. In rare cases with a certain separated SWNT fraction, we were able to fabricate FET devices composed of small-diameter, chemically separated SWNTs in parallel, with high on-/off-current (I(on)/I(off)) ratios up to 105 owing to semiconducting SWNTs with only a few (n,m) chiralities in the fraction. This was the first time that chemically separated SWNTs were used for short channel, all-semiconducting SWNT electronics dominant by just a few (n,m)'s. Nevertheless, the results suggest that much improved chemical separation methods are needed to produce nanotube electronics at a large scale.  相似文献

Standard enthalpies of formation, ionization potentials, electron affinities, and band gaps of finite-length [5,5] armchair and [9,0] zigzag single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) capped with C(30) hemispheres obtained by halving the C(60) fullerene have been computed at the B3LYP/6-311G* level of theory. Properties of SWNTs are found to depend strongly on the tube length and, in the case of the [9,0] zigzag species, on the relative orientation of the caps. The metallic character of an uncapped infinite-length [5,5] armchair SWNT manifests itself in the oscillatory dependence of the properties of capped finite-length tubes on their size. An infinite-length [9,0] zigzag SWNT is predicted to be a semiconductor rather than a metal irrespective of the presence of caps. The present results underscore the slow convergence of SWNT properties with respect to the tube length and uncover small but significant radial distortions along the long axes of SWNTs.  相似文献

We theoretically investigate the separation of individualized metallic and semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in a dielectrophoretic (DEP) flow device. The SWNT motion is simulated by a Brownian dynamics (BD) algorithm, which includes the translational and rotational effects of hydrodynamic, Brownian, dielectrophoretic, and electrophoretic forces. The device geometry is chosen to be a coaxial cylinder because it yields effective flow throughput, the DEP and flow fields are orthogonal to each other, and all the fields can be described analytically everywhere. We construct a flow-DEP phase map showing different regimes, depending on the relative magnitudes of the forces in play. The BD code is combined with an optimization algorithm that searches for the conditions that maximize the separation performance. The optimization results show that a 99% sorting performance can be achieved with typical SWNT parameters by operating in a region of the phase map where the metallic SWNTs completely orient with the field, whereas the semiconducting SWNTs partially flow-align.

Resonance Raman spectroscopy/microscopy was used to study individualized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) both in aqueous suspensions as well as after spin-coating onto Si/SiO2 surfaces. Four different SWNT materials containing nanotubes with diameters ranging from 0.7 to 1.6 nm were used. Comparison with Raman data obtained for suspensions shows that the surface does not dramatically affect the electronic properties of the deposited tubes. Raman features observed for deposited SWNTs are similar to what was measured for nanotubes directly fabricated on surfaces using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. In particular, individual semiconducting tubes could be distinguished from metallic tubes by their different G-mode line shapes. It could also be shown that the high-power, short-time sonication used to generate individualized SWNT suspensions does not induce defects in great quantities. However, (additional) defects can be generated by laser irradiation of deposited SWNTs in air, thus giving rise to an increase of the D-mode intensity for even quite low power densities (approximately 10(4) W/cm2).  相似文献

Electron-donating ferrocene units have been attached to SWNTs, with different degrees of functionalization. By means of a complementary series of novel spectroscopic techniques (i.e., steady-state and time-resolved), we have documented that mutual interactions between semiconducting SWNT and the covalently attached electron donor (i.e., ferrocene) lead, in the event of photoexcitation, to the formation of radical ion pairs. In the accordingly formed radical ion pairs, oxidation of ferrocene and reduction of SWNT were confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry. It is, however, shown that only a few semiconducting SWNTs [i.e., (9,4), (8,6), (8,7), and (9,7)] are susceptible to photoinduced electron transfer processes. These results are of relevant importance for the development of SWNT-based photovoltaics.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are promising materials for in vitro and in vivo biological applications due to their high surface area and inherent near infrared photoluminescence and Raman scattering properties. Here, we use density gradient centrifugation to separate SWNTs by length and degree of bundling. Following separation, we observe a peak in photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) and Raman scattering intensity where SWNT length is maximized and bundling is minimized. Individualized SWNTs are found to exhibit high PL QY and high resonance-enhanced Raman scattering intensity. Fractions containing long, individual SWNTs exhibit the highest PL QY and Raman scattering intensities, compared to fractions containing single, short SWNTs or SWNT bundles. Intensity gains of approximately ~1.7 and 4-fold, respectively, are obtained compared with the starting material. Spectroscopic analysis reveals that SWNT fractions at higher displacement contain increasing proportions of SWNT bundles, which causes reduced optical transition energies and broadening of absorption features in the UV-Vis-NIR spectra, and reduced PL QY and Raman scattering intensity. Finally, we adsorb small aromatic species on "bright," individualized SWNT sidewalls and compare the resulting absorption, PL and Raman scattering effects to that of SWNT bundles. We observe similar effects in both cases, suggesting aromatic stacking affects the optical properties of SWNTs in an analogous way to SWNT bundles, likely due to electronic structure perturbations, charge transfer, and dielectric screening effects, resulting in reduction of the excitonic optical transition energies and exciton lifetimes.  相似文献

Single-wall carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) modified gold electrodes were prepared by using two different methods. The electrochemical behavior of cytochrome c on the modified gold electrodes was investigated. The first kind of SWNT-modified electrode (noted as SWNT/Au electrode)was prepared by the adsorption of carboxylterminated SWNTs from DMF dispersion on the gold electrode. The oxidatively processed SWNT tips were covalently modified by coupling with amines (AET) to form amide linkage.Via Au-S chemical bonding, the self-assembled monolayer of thiol-unctionalized nanotubes on gold surface was fabricated so as to prepare the others SWNT-modified electrode (noted as SWNT/AET/Au electrode). It was shown from cyclic voltammetry cxperiments that cytochrome c exhibited direct electrochemical responses on the both electrodes, but only the current of controlled diffusion existed on the SWNT/Au electrode while both the currents of controlled diffusion and adsorption of cytochrome c occurred on the SWNT/AET/Au electrode.Photoelastic Modulation Infared Reflection Absorpthion Spectroscopy (PEM-IRRAS) and Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) were employed to verify the adsorption of SWNTs on the gold electrodes. The results proved that SWNTs could enhance the direct electron transfer proecss between the electrodes and redox proteins.  相似文献

The use of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) networks as templates for the electrodeposition of metal (Ag and Pt) nanostructures is described. Pristine SWNTs, grown on insulating SiO2 surfaces using catalyzed chemical vapor deposition, served as the working electrode. In the simplest case, electrical contact was made by depositing a gold strip on the SWNT substrate (device 1). Deposition of Ag and Pt over extensive periods (30 s) resulted in a high density of particles on the SWNTs, with almost contiguous nanowire formation from the Au/SWNT boundary moving to isolated nanoparticles at further distances from the contact. For direct electrochemical studies of Ag and Pt nucleation, the assembly was coated in a resist layer and a small window opened up to expose only the electrically connected SWNTs to solution (device 2). In this case, the electrochemical signature in voltammetric and amperometric studies of metal deposition was due solely to processes at the SWNTs. Coupled with high-resolution microscopy measurements (atomic force microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy), this approach provided detail on the nucleation and growth mechanisms of Ag and Pt on SWNTs under electrochemical control. In particular, Ag growth was found to be rapid and progressive with an increasing nanoparticle density with time, whereas Pt deposition was characterized by lower nucleation densities and slower growth rates with a tendency for larger particles to be produced over long times.  相似文献

Ever since the discovery of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), there have been many reports and predictions on their superior properties for use in a wide variety of potential applications. However, an SWNT is either metallic or semiconducting; these properties are distinctively different in electrical conductivity and many other aspects. The available bulk-production methods generally yield mixtures of metallic and semiconducting SWNTs, despite continuing efforts in metallicity-selective nanotube growth. Presented here are significant advances and major achievements in the development of postproduction separation methods, which are now capable of harvesting separated metallic and semiconducting SWNTs from different production sources with sufficiently high enrichment and quantities for satisfying at least the needs in research and technological explorations. Opportunities and some available examples for the use of metallic SWNTs in transparent electrodes and semiconducting SWNTs in various device nanotechnologies are highlighted and discussed.  相似文献

We designed and synthesized 4‐dodecyloxybenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate ( 1 ), which preferentially reacts with metallic single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by kinetic control. We first determined the suitable experimental conditions for the preferential reaction of 1 with individually dissolved SWNTs by monitoring the decrease in absorbance for the metallic SWNT in the range of 400–650 nm in the absorption spectrum of the SWNTs. The reacted SWNTs were thoroughly rinsed with THF to obtain THF‐insoluble SWNTs. The Raman spectrum of the THF‐insoluble SWNTs showed a strong peak near 180 cm?1, which corresponds to a semiconducting breathing band. The metallic breathing bands (≈220 cm?1) and Breit–Wingner–Fano (BWF) modes (1520 cm?1) corresponding to the metallic SWNTs were much weaker than those of the pristine SWNTs. We also confirmed that metallic peaks in the range of 400–650 nm in the absorption spectrum of THF‐insoluble SWNTs that were individually dissolved in an aqueous micelle of sodium cholate were almost nondetectable. All the results indicate that the THF‐insoluble SWNTs are semiconducting.  相似文献

Inversed micelles formed by polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinyl-pyridine) in toluene loaded with FeCl3 were used to synthesize and deliver discrete Fe2O3 nanoclusters with uniform diameters to flat substrates. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were grown by chemical vapor deposition using these nanoclusters as the catalysts. Atomic force microscope characterizations revealed that high density SWNT mats were grown on the surface and the diameter of nanotubes was controlled by the diameter of nanoclusters. Electrical measurement revealed that the dense SWNT mats contained both semiconducting and metallic SWNTs and could be used to build thin film transistors.  相似文献

Density functional theory is employed to study Pd and Pd/Ni alloy monatomic chain-functionalized metallic single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT(6,6)) and semiconducting SWNT(10,0), and their interactions with hydrogen molecules. The stable geometries and binding energies have been determined for both isolated chains and chains on SWNT surfaces. We found that continuous Pd and Pd/Ni chains form on SWNTs with geometries close to stable geometries in the isolated chains. Ni alloying improves stability of the chains owing to a higher binding energy to both Pd and C atoms. The physical properties of SWNTs are significantly modified by chain functionalization. SWNT(10,0) is transformed to metal by either Pd or alloy chains, or to a smaller band gap semiconductor, depending on the Pd binding site. From calculations for H(2) interactions with the optimized chain-SWNT systems, the adsorption energy per H atom is found to be about 2.6 times larger for Pd/Ni chain-functionalized SWNTs than for pure Pd chain-functionalized SWNTs. Band structure calculations show that the SWNT(10,0) reverts back to semiconductor and SWNT(6,6) has reduced density of states at the Fermi level upon H(2) adsorption. This result is consistent with the experimentally observed increase of electrical resistance when Pd-coated SWNTs are used as H(2) sensing materials. Finally, our results suggest that Pd/Ni-SWNT materials are potentially good H(2)-sensing materials.  相似文献

Micromold with microchannels was employed in assembly of directional free-standing single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) strings at room temperature. The new postgrowth assembly approach could, in principle, apply not only to a wide range of SWNTs in their soluble or dispersible forms, including small diameter (0.7-0.8 nm) SWNTs, covalent- and noncovalent-functionalized SWNTs, monodispersed SWNTs with identical diameter and chirality, and fullerenes@SWNTs, which either cannot survive the high-temperature treatment or cannot be synthesized by current CVD method, but also to other soluble or dispersible one-dimensional nanostructures.  相似文献
