Correlated electron densities, experimental ionisation potentials, and experimental electron affinities are used to investigate the homogeneity of the exchange-correlation and non-interacting kinetic energy functionals of Kohn-Sham density functional theory under density scaling. Results are presented for atoms and small molecules, paying attention to the influence of the integer discontinuity and the choice of the electron affinity. For the exchange-correlation functional, effective homogeneities are highly system-dependent on either side of the integer discontinuity. By contrast, the average homogeneity-associated with the potential that averages over the discontinuity-is generally close to 4/3 when the discontinuity is computed using positive affinities for systems that do bind an excess electron and negative affinities for those that do not. The proximity to 4/3 becomes increasingly pronounced with increasing atomic number. Evaluating the discontinuity using a zero affinity in systems that do not bind an excess electron instead leads to effective homogeneities on the electron abundant side that are close to 4/3. For the non-interacting kinetic energy functional, the effective homogeneities are less system-dependent and the effect of the integer discontinuity is less pronounced. Average values are uniformly below 5/3. The study provides information that may aid the development of improved exchange-correlation and non-interacting kinetic energy functionals.  相似文献

Orbital energies in Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) are investigated, paying attention to the role of the integer discontinuity in the exact exchange-correlation potential. A series of closed-shell molecules are considered, comprising some that vertically bind an excess electron and others that do not. High-level ab initio electron densities are used to calculate accurate orbital energy differences, Deltavarepsilon, between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), using the same potential for both. They are combined with accurate vertical ionization potentials, I(0), and electron affinities, A(0), to determine accurate "average" orbital energies. These are the orbital energies associated with an exchange-correlation potential that averages over a constant jump in the accurate potential, of magnitude Delta(XC)=(I(0)-A(0))-Deltavarepsilon, as given by the discontinuity analysis. Local functional HOMO energies are shown to be almost an order of magnitude closer to these average values than to -I(0), with typical discrepancies of just 0.02 a.u. For systems that do not bind an excess electron, this level of agreement is only achieved when A(0) is set equal to the negative experimental affinity from electron transmission spectroscopy (ETS); it degrades notably when the zero ground state affinity is instead used. Analogous observations are made for the local functional LUMO energies, although the need to use the ETS affinities is less pronounced for systems where the ETS values are very negative. The application of an asymptotic correction recovers the preference, leading to positive LUMO energies (but bound orbitals) for these systems, consistent with the behavior of the average energies. The asymptotically corrected LUMO energies typically agree with the average values to within 0.02 a.u., comparable to that observed with the HOMOs. The study provides numerical support for the view that local functionals exhibit a near-average behavior based on a constant jump of magnitude Delta(XC). It illustrates why a recently proposed DFT expression involving local functional frontier orbital energies and ionization potential yields reasonable estimates of negative ETS affinities and is consistent with earlier work on the failure of DFT for charge-transfer excited states. The near-average behavior of the exchange-correlation potential is explicitly illustrated for selected systems. The nature of hybrid functional orbital energies is also mentioned, and the results of the study are discussed in terms of the variation in electronic energy as a function of electron number. The nature of DFT orbital energies is of great importance in chemistry; this study contributes to the understanding of these quantities.  相似文献

Using picosecond absorption spectroscopy it has been shown that in Rhodobacter sphaeroides reaction centres the substitution of the primary quinone acceptor (QA), ubiquinone-10, by other quinone species (with redox potentials higher or lower than that of ubiquinone-10) has essentially no modifying effect on the reaction centre protein. The molecular relaxation processes that accompany the localization and stabilization of a photo-excited electron on the intermediate acceptor, bacteriopheophytin (I), are not affected, although the subsequent transfer of the electron from I to QA is slowed down. Consequently, this leads to a lower quantum efficiency of high rate of direct I-----QA reaction is normally due to the specificity of the primary quinone species and its binding site in the reaction centre protein which provide optimum steric and chemical conditions for an effective interaction between I and QA.  相似文献

The thermodynamic driving forces (defined as the enthalpy changes or redox potentials in this work) of the 18 phenothiazines and their analogues, phenoxazine, N-methyl-dihydrophenazine, 9H-thioxanthene, 9H-xanthene and 9,10-dihydro- N-methylacridine, to release hydride, hydrogen atom, proton, and electron in acetonitrile, the thermodynamic driving forces of the radical cations of the phenothiazines and the analogues to release hydrogen atom, proton, and electron in acetonitrile, and the thermodynamic driving forces of the cations of the phenothiazines with two positive charges and their analogues to release proton in acetonitrile were estimated by using experimental methods. The effect of the remote substituents on the 11 determined thermodynamic driving forces were examined according to Brown's substituent parameters; the results show that the values of the 11 thermodynamic driving forces all are linearly dependent on the sum of Brown substituent parameters (sigma +) with very good correlation coefficients, which indicates that for any one- or multisubstituted at para- and/or meta-position phenothiazines and their various reaction intermediates, the 11 thermodynamic driving forces all can be easily and safely estimated from the corresponding Brown substituent parameters (sigma +). The relative effective charges on the center nitrogen atom in phenothiazines and their various reaction intermediates were estimated from the related Hammett-type linear free-energy relationships, which can be used to efficiently measure the electrophilicity, nucleophilicity, and dimerizing ability of the corresponding reaction intermediates of phenothiazines and their analogues. All the information disclosed in this work could not only supply a gap of the chemical thermodynamics on the mutual conversions between phenothiazines and their various reaction intermediates in solution but also strongly promote the fast development of the chemistry and application of phenothiazines and their analogues.  相似文献

Many biological compounds exhibit irreversible redox behavior as a result of slow heterogeneous electron transfer at electrode surfaces. In order to study the electrochemical behavior of these biocomponents, redox mediators are used to facilitate the electron transfer process. In this review the characteristics of ideal mediators are discussed and structural information on previously reported mediator compounds is provided. The electrochemical literature has been extensively surveyed to provide an up-to-date compilation of mediators suitable for use in potentiometric and coulometric titrations and in various types of voltammetric studies of biological redox systems. The compilation provides information on the formal potentials of the mediators as well as their previous applications and references. This review is intended to provide a current survey of compounds having suitable redox mediation characteristics.  相似文献

Abstract

Benzoquinones, naphthoquinones and aziridinylbenzoquinones, can be reduced by flavoproteins to semiquinones that react with molecular oxygen to form superoxide anion with the subsequent regeneration of the parent compounds. This redox cycling, a form of futile metabolism, produces reactive oxygen species and depletes the reducing equivalents of cells without concomitant energy production. The ability of a toxicant to redox cycle is related to its one-electron reduction potential, and this study attempted to estimate reduction potential from structure using semi-empirical quantum chemical models for a diverse set of chemicals. The results of this study suggest that one-electron reduction potentials, within structural classes of benzoquinones, naphthoquinones, phenols and nitrobenzenes, can be estimated from local and global electronic indices that are related to delocalization. Smaller absolute charge on the carbonyl carbon in the quinone moiety correlated with more positive one-electron reduction potentials of 1,4-benzoquinones, naphthoquinones and two-electron reduction potentials of aziridinylbenzoquinones. The energy of frontier orbitals of the quinones, phenols and nitrobenzenes also co-varied with reduction potential. More positive reduction potentials of 1,4-benzoquinones, 1,4-naphthoquinones and phenols were correlated with more negative values of EHOMO, while more negative values of ELUMO were correlated with more positive potentials of nitrobenzenes and aziridinylbenzoquinones. Delocalization of electron density also correlated with reduction potentials within individual classes.  相似文献

In this paper, we report a spectroelectrochemical investigation of proton-coupled electron transfer in flavodoxin D. vulgaris Hildenborough (Fld). Poly-L-lysine is used to promote the binding of Fld to the nanocrystalline, mesoporous SnO(2) electrodes. Two reversible redox couples of the immobilized Fld are observed electrochemically and are assigned by spectroelectrochemistry to the quinone/semiquinone and semiquinone/hydroquinone couples of the protein's flavin mononucleotide (FMN) redox cofactor. Comparison with control data for free FMN indicates no contamination of the Fld data by dissociated FMN. The quinone/semiquinone and semiquinone/hydroquinone midpoint potentials (E(q/sq) and E(sq/hq)) at pH 7 were determined to be -340 and -585 mV vs Ag/AgCl, in good agreement with the literature. E(q/sq) exhibited a pH dependence of 51 mV/pH. The kinetics of these redox couples were studied using cyclic voltammetry, cyclic voltabsorptometry, and chronoabsorptometry. The semiquinone/quinone reoxidation is found to exhibit slow, potential-independent but pH-sensitive kinetics with a reoxidation rate constant varying from 1.56 s(-)(1) at pH 10 to 0.0074 s(-)(1) at pH 5. The slow kinetics are discussed in terms of a simple kinetics model and are assigned to the reoxidation process being rate limited by semiquinone deprotonation. It is proposed that this slow deprotonation step has the physiological benefit of preventing the undesirable loss of reducing equivalents which results from semiquinone oxidation to quinone.  相似文献

Accurate reference wave functions and their densities have been used to obtain accurate exchange-correlation potentials for the beryllium isoelectronic sequence Be, Ne(+6), Ar(+14), and Kr(+32). The exchange-correlation potentials for the four-electron cations with high Z in this sequence exhibit structure prior to the intershell peak that is not present in neutral atoms. The kinetic energy contribution to the exchange-correlation potential contributes to the early structure as well as to the intershell peak. The near degeneracy in this four-electron sequence plays a significant role in the structure prior to the intershell peak. Several of the quantities on which the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhoff and Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria functionals are dependent are examined. The generalized gradient approximations appear not to account for the near degeneracy in this series.  相似文献

Anthraquinone and viologen moieties were combined to dyadic molecules with two redox centers. These dyades and their constituents were used as acceptors in photo‐induced electron‐transfer reactions. The experiments show that a caveat is necessary if one tries to derive the properties and the reactions of the dyades from those of their constituents: the spectral properties appear to be independent superpositions of those of the constituents. However, the redox potentials of the two redox centres in the dyades deviate from that of their constituents, the methylene bridge can not suppress a considerable interaction between the two redox centres. This is especially true when the redox potentials of the constituents are close to one another. From the quenching experiments, it can be concluded that electrolyte cations like Na+ are engaged in the transition states of the electron‐transfer reactions. In this way, they can control the fate of the transferred electron.  相似文献

The redox reactions of p-hydroquinone and pyrocatechol undergo a two-proton-two-electron process in aqueous solution. We calculated their redox potentials at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level, and verified the values by employing cyclic voltammetry experiments. Then we selected seven substituent groups (–F, –Cl, –OH, –COOH, –CN, –NH2, and –NO2 groups) to systematically investigate the substituent effect, including the sort, position, and number of the substituent, on the redox potentials of p-hydroquinone and pyrocatechol. The calculated results show that –NH2 and –OH groups can decrease the redox potentials, while –F, –Cl, –COOH, –CN, and –NO2 groups increase the potential values of p-hydroquinone and pyrocatechol. The calculations can accurately predict the substituent effects on the redox potentials of pyrocatechol and p-hydroquinone. We would expect that the accurate calculation results for the model systems could be applied in the prediction of electrode potentials of other molecules.  相似文献

A set of intramolecularly connected dyads consisting of a quinone unit and a pyrrole or indole moiety have been designed and evaluated in quantum-chemical calculations. It is shown computationally for several systems, depending on the length and attachment points of the interconnecting chains, that a reduction of the quinone to the semiquinone radical anion or quinolate dianion state leads to a reversible intramolecular reorientation from a pi-stacked to a T-stacked arrangement. In the rearranged structures, a hydrogen bond from the pyrrole or indole N-H function to the semiquinone or quinolate pi-system is created upon reduction. In some systems, hydrogen bonds to the semiquinone or quinolate oxygen atoms are partly feasible and will be preferred over T-stacking. The choice of systems has been based on recent computational observations related to photosystem I. Systems with pyrrole or indole units should provide a better basis for the envisioned molecular motor than recently proposed quinone-benzene dyads. The intramolecular interactions modify the quinone redox potentials. Electronic g-tensors have been computed for the semiquinone states. These reflect characteristically the presence and nature of hydrogen bonds to the semiquinone and represent suitable electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopic probes for the preferred structures. Intramolecular proton transfer is possible in the dianionic state.  相似文献

Most present applications of time-dependent density functional theory use adiabatic functionals, i.e., the effective potential at time t is determined solely by the density at the same time. This paper discusses a method that aims to go beyond this approximation, by incorporating "memory" effects: the derived exchange-correlation potential will depend not only on present densities but also on the past. In order to ensure the potentials are causal, we formulate the action on the Keldysh contour for electrons in electromagnetic fields, from which we derive suitable Kohn-Sham equations. The exchange-correlation action is now a functional of the electron density and velocity field. A specific action functional is constructed which is Galilean invariant and yields a causal exchange-correlation vector potential for the Kohn-Sham equations incorporating memory effects. We show explicitly that the net exchange-correlation Lorentz force is zero. The potential is consistent with known dynamical properties of the homogeneous electron gas (in the linear response limit).  相似文献

The optically and thermally induced electron transfer pathways of highly symmetrical (D(3)) hexaarylbenzene systems with six triarylamine redox sites have been investigated. Owing to slightly different local redox potentials, the radical trication could be selectively generated by electrochemical methods. This trication shows a strong intervalence charge-transfer band in the near infrared (NIR) that was measured by spectroelectrochemistry and analysed using multi-dimensional Mulliken-Hush theory. Quantum chemical AM1 CI calculations indicate that there is no optically induced concerted three-electron transfer that transforms the ground state into a state in which all three positively charged triarylamine moieties change place with their neutral neighbours. The potential energy surface of the ground state was constructed by using quadratic potentials. From this potential surface it is apparent that there is also no thermally allowed concerted three-electron transfer pathway. Instead, three consecutive one-electron transfer steps are necessary for this process.  相似文献

A more rigorous theoretical treatment of methods previously used to correlate computed energy values with experimental redox potentials, combined with the availability of well-developed computational solvation methods, results in a shift away from computing ionization potentials/electron affinities in favor of computing absolute reduction potentials. Seventy-nine literature redox potentials measured under comparable conditions from 51 alternant and nonalternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are linearly correlated with their absolute reduction potentials computed by density functional theory (B3LYP/6-31+G(d)) with SMD/IEF-PCM solvation. The resulting correlation is very strong (R(2) = 0.9981, MAD = 0.056 eV). When extrapolated to the x-intercept, the correlation results in an estimate of 5.17 ± 0.01 eV for the absolute potential of the ferrocene-ferrocenium redox couple in acetonitrile at 25 °C, indicating that this simple method can be used reliably for both calculating absolute redox potentials and for predicting relative redox potentials. When oxidation and reduction data are evaluated separately, the overall MAD value is improved by 50% to 0.028 eV, which improves relative potential predictions, but the computed values do not extrapolate to a reasonable estimate of the absolute potential of the ferrocene-ferrocenium ion reference.  相似文献

EPR spectroscopy has been used to investigate spontaneous and/or photo-induced electron transfer between adsorbed organic molecules and the mesoporous aluminosilicate MCM-41 host. Spontaneous electron transfer occurs from the host to electron acceptor molecules with sufficiently favourable reduction potentials (TCNE, TCNQ, 1,4-benzoquinone, 1,4-naphthaquinone and 1,4-anthraquinone), provided the MCM-41 contains aluminium and the radical anion yield correlates with the aluminium content of the host. The semiquinone radical anions are interacting strongly with exposed Al3+ sites, whereas the TCNE and TCNQ radical anions are loosely bound and can be washed from the host. Radical cation formation is observed when electron donor molecules with favourable oxidation potentials are adsorbed in MCM-41 containing aluminium, and the radical cations formed interact with exposed Al3+ sites. This work shows that aluminium-containing MCM-41 contains both electron donating and electron accepting sites which may intervene in intra-molecular charge separation processes in adsorbed organic molecules.  相似文献

Tetrathiatriarylmethyl (TAM) radicals are commonly used as oximetry probes for electron paramagnetic resonance imaging applications. In this study, the electronic properties and the thermodynamic preferences for O2 addition to various TAM-type triarylmethyl (trityl) radicals were theoretically investigated. The radicals' stability in the presence of O2 and biological milieu was also experimentally assessed using EPR spectroscopy. Results show that H substitution on the aromatic ring affects the trityl radical's stability (tricarboxylate salt 1-CO2Na > triester 1-CO2Et > diester 2-CO2Et > monoester 3-CO2Et) and may lead to substitution reactions in cellular systems. We propose that this degradation process involves an arylperoxyl radical that can further decompose to alcohol or quinone products. This study demonstrates how computational chemistry can be used as a tool to rationalize radical stability in the redox environment of biological systems and aid in the future design of more biostable trityl radicals.  相似文献

Photoinduced electron transfer in ion pairs of cation-anion polymethine dyes was studied by flash photolysis. The formation of radicals, which are the products of photoinduced transfer of an electron from an anion to a cation in the ion pairs, was observed during photoexcitation of a number of cation-anion dyes in nonpolar and some weakly polar solvents (in particular, in toluene and chloroform). Photoinduced electron transfer is also observed during triplet sensitization of ion pairs of the cation-anion dyes. The redox potentials of the cations and anions constituting the dyes were measured; the radical yields were compared with the free energies of photoinduced electron transfer. Photoinduced electron transfer in the systems under study was compared with similar process in cyanineborate ion pairs.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk.
