Nanophase Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 were synthesized through a precipitation method and were utilized for the removal of either arsenic (III) or (V) from aqueous solution as a possible method for drinking water treatment. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using X-ray diffraction, which showed that the Fe3O4 and the Fe2O3 nanoparticles had crystal structures of magnetite and hematite, respectively. In addition, Secherrer's equation was used to determine that the grain size nanoparticles were 12 ± 1.0 nm and 17 ± 0.5 nm for the Fe2O3 and Fe3O4, respectively. Under a 1 h contact time, batch pH experiments were performed to determine the optimum pH for binding using 300 ppb of either As(III) or (V) and 10 mg of either Fe3O4 or Fe2O3. The binding was observed to be pH independent from pH 6 through pH 9 and a significant drop in the binding was observed at pH 10. Furthermore, batch isotherm studies were performed using the Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 to determine the binding capacity of As(III) and As(V) to the iron oxide nanomaterials. The binding was found to follow the Langmuir isotherm and the capacities (mg/kg) of 1250 (Fe2O3) and 8196 (Fe3O4) for As(III) as well as 20,000 (Fe2O3) and 5680 (Fe3O4) for As(III), at 1 and 24 h of contact time, respectively. The As(V) capacities were determined to be 4600 (Fe2O3), 6711(Fe3O4), 4904 (Fe2O3), and 4780 (Fe3O4) mg/kg for nanomaterials at contact times of 1 and 24 h respectively.  相似文献

In order to provide information on the chemical processes in sediment fractions and their adsorption models, we investigated the contaminated sediments of the Sumida River in Tokyo, Japan and the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, Thailand. Samples were leached through a sequential leaching technique to perform metal concentration analysis for the sediment fraction assessment and then samples were tested for the model adsorption of the highest level of sediments contaminated by heavy metals using the isotherm Langmuir and Freundlich equations. Metal (Pb, Cd, Zn, As, Cu, Ca, Fe, and Mn) concentration in the leached solutions was analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The pattern of geochemical fractions in both sediment samples showed the maxima leached levels of Cd (38.6 %), Ca (55.2%), and Mn (41.3%) in the soluble fraction; Pb (52.1%), and Zn (56.7%) in the reducible fraction; Cu (61.2%) in the oxidizable fraction; and As (47.1%) and Fe (55.9%) in the residual fraction. The total level fractions of Pb (62.6 ppm), Zn (240 ppm), As (27.2 ppm), Fe (16,636 ppm) and Mn (419 ppm) in the Chao Phraya River sediments were higher compared to those in the Sumida River, indicating the high anthropogenic effect in Bangkok. In the most contaminated sediments, the higher adsorption capacity of heavy metal concentrations was contributed by SiO2, CaCO3, and Al2O3 determined by the X-ray diffraction and organic contents. The model of adsorption of Cd fitted to the linear form of Langmuir’s equation with the correlation coefficients (r2 = 0.94), b (0.467) and k (7137), whereas Pb, Cu, Cr, and Zn conformed to the model of the Freundlich equation.  相似文献

A novel cation exchanger (TFS-CE) having carboxylate functionality was prepared through graft copolymerization of hydroxyethylmethacrylate onto tamarind fruit shell (TFS) in the presence of N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide as a cross-linking agent using K2S2O8/Na2S2O3 initiator system, followed by functionalisation. The TFS-CE was used for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. At fixed solid/solution ratio the various factors affecting adsorption such as pH, initial concentration, contact time, and temperature were investigated. Kinetic experiments showed that the amount of Cu(II) adsorbed increased with increase in Cu(II) concentration and equilibrium was attained at 1 h. The kinetics of adsorption follows pseudo-second-order model and the rate constant increases with increase in temperature indicating endothermic nature of adsorption. The Arrhenius and Eyring equations were used to obtain the kinetic parameters such as activation energy (Ea) and enthalpy (ΔH#), entropy (ΔS#) and free energy (ΔG#) of activation for the adsorption process. The value of Ea for adsorption was found to be 10.84 kJ · mol?1 and the adsorption involves diffusion controlled process. The equilibrium data were well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity for Cu(II) was 64 · 10 mg · g?1 at T = 303 K. The thermodynamic parameters such as changes in free energy (ΔG°), enthalpy (ΔH°), and entropy (ΔS°) were derived to predict the nature of adsorption process. The isosteric heat of adsorption increases with increase in surface loading indicating some lateral interactions between the adsorbed metal ions.  相似文献

An organic–inorganic hybrid mesoporous silica was synthesized via post-grafting of KIT-6 with 4-(triethoxysilyl)butyronitrile. All samples were characterized using their N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, XRD, FT–IR, TEM, SEM, and PT. The adsorption potential of this material for removing Pb(II) from aqueous solutions was investigated via the batch technique, and the effects of pH and contact time were studied. Experimental data showed that the maximum Pb(II) adsorption, 76%, occurred in the pH range around 6. The adsorption equilibrium was reached within 40 min for 10 wt.%COOH/KIT-6. The adsorption data were fitted using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, and the obtained modeling equilibrium adsorption data suggested that the 10 wt.%COOH/KIT-6 sample contained homogeneous adsorption sites that fit the Langmuir adsorption model well. The pseudo-second-order model described well the 10 wt.%COOH/KIT-6 adsorption process. The desorption and regeneration experiments indicated that ≈95% of the metal desorbed and the adsorbent could be regenerated via an acid treatment without altering its properties.  相似文献

The performance of a microporous activated carbon prepared chemically from olive stones for removing Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from single and binary aqueous solutions was investigated via the batch technique. The activated carbon sample was characterized using N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, SEM, XRD, FTIR, and Boehm titration. The effect of initial pH and contact time were studied. Adsorption kinetic rates were found to be fast and kinetic experimental data fitted very well the pseudo-second-order equation. The adsorption isotherms fit the Redlich–Peterson model very well and maximum adsorption amounts of single metal ions solutions follow the trend Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Cu(II). The adsorption behavior of binary solution systems shows a relatively high affinity to Cu(II) at the activated carbon surface of the mixture with Cd(II) or Pb(II). An antagonistic competitive adsorption phenomenon was observed. Desorption experiments indicated that about 59.5% of Cu(II) and 23% of Cd(II) were desorbed using a diluted sulfuric acid solution.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) is naturally occurring in the environment and is an essential nutrient in mammals. However, environmental Se can be increased to toxic levels through different industrial practices. The potential adsorption of the Se oxoanions, selenite and selenate, from aqueous solutions onto nanosynthesized MnFe2O4 was investigated using batch techniques and DRC-ICP-MS spectroscopy. The nanomaterial (NM) was laboratory synthesized through slow titration of a mixture of Fe2+ and Mn2+ ions. X-ray diffraction and Scherrer's equation were used to determine the phase of the material and crystallite size, respectively. The effects of pH, reaction time, competitive anions, and the adsorption capacity of the synthesized NM to bind selenite and selenate were investigated. The Langmuir isotherm was used to determine the binding capacity of the NM. Results showed that the phase of the nanomaterial was similar to Jacobsite with a size of 27.5 nm. Results also showed that the sorption of either 100 ppb of selenite or selenate was pH independent in the pH range 2 to 6 and occurred within 5 min of contact time. The introduction of Cl and NO3 anions individually added to solution had no significant effect on the sorption of either selenite or selenate. However, it was found that the addition of SO42 had a competitive effect only on the sorption of selenate, first seen at 10 ppm and more pronounced at 100 ppm of SO42. In the presence of 100 ppm of PO43, the adsorption of selenate decreased to 87% while selenite sorption decreased to 20%. From the Langmuir isotherm equation it was determined that the nano-Jacobsite had a selenite and selenate binding capacity of 6573.76 and 769.23 mg Se/kg of NM, respectively.  相似文献

In this work, low-density vanillin-modified thin chitosan membranes were synthesized and characterized. The membranes were utilized as adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The experimental data obtained in batch experiments at different temperatures were fitted to the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms to obtain the characteristic parameters of each model. The adsorption equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir model (average R2 > 0.99). Interactions thermodynamic parameters (ΔintH, ΔintG, and ΔintS), as well as the interaction thermal effects (Qint) were determined from T = (298 to 333) K. The thermodynamic parameters, the Dubinin–Radushkevick equation and the comparative values of ΔintH for some Cu(II)–adsorbent interactions suggested that the adsorption of Cu(II) ions to vanillin-chitosan membranes show average results for both the diffusional (endothermic) and chemical bonding (exothermic) processes in relation to the temperature range studied.  相似文献

A novel composite adsorbent, silica aerogel activated carbon was synthesized by sol-gel process at ambient pressure drying method. The composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms (BET).In the present study, the mentioned adsorbent was used moderately for the removal of cadmium ions from aqueous solutions and was compared with two other adsorbents of cadmium, activated carbon and silica aerogel. The experiments of Cd adsorption by adsorbents were performed at different initial ion concentrations, pH of the solution, adsorption temperature, adsorbent dosage and contact time. Moreover, the optimum pH for the adsorption was found to be 6.0 with the corresponding adsorbent dosage level of 0.1 g at 60 °C temperature. Subsequently, the equilibrium was achieved for Cd with 120 min of contact time.Consequently, the results show that using this composite adsorbent could remove more than 60% of Cd under optimum experimental conditions. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model was applied to analyze the data, in which the adsorption equilibrium data were correlated well with the Freundlich isotherm model and the equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe) was found to be 0.384 mg/g in the 3 mg/L solution of cadmium.  相似文献

Nanoparticles of α-Bi2Mo3O12 were prepared by co-precipitation method at calcination temperatures of 250, 300, 400 and 480 °C. The characterization of α-Bi2Mo3O12 synthesized at different temperatures was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (TGA/DTA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Adsorption parameters and photocatalytical activity under visible light irradiation of α-Bi2Mo3O12 were evaluated using the rhodamine B (rhB) dye as model. The adsorption constant (K) and maximum amount of dye adsorbed (qmax) on the surface of the samples synthesized were evaluated following the Langmuir isotherm. The sample calcinated at 250 °C showed the maximum adsorption percentage of dye, which ranged between 20 and 46% for initial concentrations of rhB from 5 to 15 mg L?1, with a K = 6.96 × 105 L mol?1 and qmax = 2.73 mg g?1. All samples were able to induce the oxidative photodegradation of rhB, however, the bleaching of dye solution was reached more quickly for the sample calcinated at 250 °C.  相似文献

The present study reports the competitive adsorptive removal of cadmium (Cd(II)) and zinc (Zn(II)) ions from binary systems using rice husk ash (RHA), a waste obtained from the rice husk-fired furnaces, as an adsorbent. The initial pH (pH0) affects significantly the capacity of RHA for adsorbing the metallic ions in the aqueous solution. The pH0  6.0 is found to be the optimum for the removal of Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions by RHA. The single ion equilibrium adsorption from the binary solution is better represented by the non-competitive Redlich–Peterson (R–P) and the Freundlich models than by Langmuir model in the initial metal concentration range of 10–100 mg/l. The adsorption of Zn(II) ion is more than that of Cd(II) ion, and this trend is in agreement with the single-component adsorption data. The equilibrium metal removal decreases with increasing concentrations of the other metal ion and the combined effect of Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions on RHA is generally found to be antagonistic. Non-modified Langmuir, modified Langmuir, extended-Langmuir, extended-Freundlich, Sheindorf–Rebuhn–Sheintuch (SRS), non-modified R–P and modified R–P adsorption models were tested to find the most appropriate competitive adsorption isotherm for the binary adsorption of Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions onto RHA by minimizing the Marquardt's percent standard deviation (MPSD) error function. The extended-Freundlich model satisfactorily represents the adsorption equilibrium data of Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions onto RHA.  相似文献

In the present study a biomass derived from the leaves of Acacia nilotica was used as an adsorbent material for the removal of cadmium and lead from aqueous solution. The effect of various operating variables, viz., adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH and temperature on the removal of cadmium and lead has been studied. Maximum adsorption of cadmium and lead arises at a concentration of 2 g/50 ml and 3 g/50 ml and at a pH value of 5 and 4, respectively. The sorption data favored the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R) models were applied to describe the biosorption isotherm of the metal ions by A. nilotica biomass. Based on regression coefficient, the equilibrium data found were fitted well to the Langmuir equilibrium model than other models. Thermodynamic parameters such as free energy change (ΔG°), enthalpy change (ΔH°) and entropy change (ΔS°) have been calculated, respectively revealed the spontaneous, endothermic and feasible nature of adsorption process. The activation energy of the biosorption (Ea) was estimated as 9.34 kJ mol−1 for Pb and 3.47 kJ mol−1 for Cd from Arrhenius plot at different temperatures.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used successfully for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solution. Characterization techniques showed the carbon as nanotubes with an average diameter between 40 and 60 nm and a specific surface area of 61.5 m2 g?1. The effect of carbon nanotubes mass, contact time, metal ions concentration, solution pH, and ionic strength on the adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) by MWCNTs were studied and optimized. The adsorption of the heavy metals from aqueous solution by MWCNTs was studied kinetically using different kinetic models. A pseudo-second order model and the Elovich model were found to be in good agreement with the experimental data. The mechanism of adsorption was studied by the intra-particle diffusion model, and the results showed that intra-particle diffusion was not the slowest of the rate processes that determined the overall order. This model also revealed that the interaction of the metal ions with the MWCNTs surface might have been the most significant rate process. There was a competition among the metal ions for binding of the active sites present on the MWCNTs surface with affinity in the following order: Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Pb(II) > Cd(II).  相似文献

The polycrystalline and hydrophobic zinc borate (Zn2B6O11·3H2O) nanoplatelets were in situ successfully synthesized via one-step precipitation reaction in aqueous solution of Na2B4O7·10H2O and ZnSO4·7H2O with oleic acid as the modifying agent. The microstructures and morphology of the as-obtained samples were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Measurements of the relative water contact angle and the active ratio indicated that Zn2B6O11·3H2O samples were hydrophobic. It had been found that the as-prepared materials displayed nanoplatelet morphology with average diameters 100–500 nm and thickness 30 ± 5 nm and the morphology and size of the samples were controlled effectively.  相似文献

Characterization, thermal stability and thermal decomposition of transition metal malonates, MCH2C2O4·nH2O (M = Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)), as well as, the thermal behaviour of malonic acid (C3H4O4) and its sodium salt (Na2CH2C2O4·H2O) were investigated employing simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy, TG-FTIR system, elemental analysis and complexometry. The dehydration, as well as, the thermal decomposition of the anhydrous compounds occurs in a single step. For the sodium malonate the final residue up to 700 °C is sodium carbonate, while the transition metal malonates the final residue up to 335 °C (Mn), 400 °C (Fe), 340 °C (Co), 350 °C (Ni), 520 °C (Cu) and 450 °C (Zn) is Mn3O4, Fe2O3, Co3O4, NiO, CuO and ZnO, respectively. The results also provided information concerning the ligand's denticity, thermal behaviour and identification of some gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition of these compounds.  相似文献

In this study, trimetal Mg/Ce/Mn oxide-modified diatomaceous earth (DE) was synthesized at optimal conditions. Comparison of the SEM images and the results of EDX analyses of the raw and the modified DE confirmed the surface modification of the raw DE with the trimetal oxide. Groundwater fluoride removal capacity of the sorbent was evaluated by batch method at various defluoridation conditions. At a sorbent dosage of 0.6 g/100 mL (contact time: 60 min, mixing speed of 200 rpm and temperature: 297 K), the fluoride removal was >93% for solutions containing initial fluoride concentration of 10–60 mg/L. Sorbent’s optimum fluoride uptake capacity was 12.63 mg/g at the initial fluoride concentration of 100 mg/L. Fluoride removal was >91% for solutions with initial pH range of ∼4–11 (initial fluoride concentration: 9 mg/L, sorbent dosage: 0.6 g/100 mL). Appraisal of the effect of co-existing anions on fluoride removal showed that CO32− would reduce the amount of fluoride removed from solution, while other anions such as PO43−, NO3 and SO42− had no observable effect. K2SO4 solution was found to be most suitable for regeneration of spent Mg/Ce/Mn oxide-modified DE compared to Na2CO3 and NaOH. The mechanism of fluoride removal at pH > 5.45 (pHpzc = 5.45) occurred by exchange of hydroxyl groups on surface of sorbent with fluoride ions from solution. Sorption data fitted better to Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. External diffusion was observed to be the sorption rate limiting factor.  相似文献

Manganese is one of the heavy metals that is a major environmental concern when present in large amount. Manganese is discarded into water systems by numerous industries, including mining, batteries and electroplating etc. Pineapple leaves were applied as a biomass source to produce a magnetic hydrothermal treated hydochar nanocomposite; Fe3O4-HC. The BET surface area of Fe2O3-HC nanocomposite was 21.27 m2/g. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that the uptake of Mn2+ fit well in the pseudo second kinetics model, while the adsorption isotherm best fit the Freundlich model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 2.99 mg/g at 25 °C and a pH of 5. The obtained thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that Mn2+ ion adsorption using the Fe2O3-HC nanocomposite was endothermic and nonspontaneous. Additionally, Fe2O3-HC nanocomposite demonstrated to be highly selective towards Mn2+ ions in the presence of other ions. The removal percentage of Mn2+ from a real water sample spiked with 50 mg/L Mn2+ was reported to be 53.2%. The spent adsorbent was then used to detect latent fingerprints, which revealed that Mn2+-Fe2O3-HC nanocomposite generated better and clear latent fingerprints than Fe2O3-HC nanocomposite.  相似文献

A thiol-functionalized hierarchical zeolite nanocomposite was synthesized and investigated with a view to remove mercury from aqueous solutions. The hierarchical zeolite was prepared by the use of a beta zeolite and of cetyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB). The ligand, 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane containing thiol (–SH) groups, was then immobilized on the surface of the hierarchical zeolite through grafting with surface silanol groups. FTIR, XRD, SEM, TG-DTG, and N2 adsorption–desorption techniques were used to characterize the nanocomposite before and after functionalization. Adsorption experiments showed that this adsorbent was an excellent one to bind mercury with high selectivity; an adsorption capacity of 8.2 mequiv·g−1 of adsorbent was obtained. Furthermore, the adsorbent retained most of its capacity after regeneration with nitric acid and thiourea solutions. The adsorption data was fitted to the Freundlich isotherm.  相似文献

This study highlights the importance of a cheap bio waste; Pine Nut Shell (PNS), from which a carbon is synthesized that can efficiently remove toxic phthalates from an aqueous system. PNS derived carbon shows high affinity toward phthalates in descending order along with adsorption capacity i.e., dibutyl phthalate (DBP) 5.65 mg/g > diallyl phthalate (DAP) 3.64 mg/g > diethyl phthalate (DEP) and 2.87 mg/g > dimethyl phthalate (DMP) 2.48 mg/g. Different characterization techniques such as FTIR, elemental analysis, point of zero electric charge (PZC), SEM, EDX and BET were employed to investigate the binding sites and surface area of the adsorbent. Adsorption experiments were performed both in batch and column modes. Equilibrium studies showed that the Langmuir isotherm fits best to experimental data. Kinetically, adsorption phenomena obeyed pseudo second order. Furthermore, thermodynamic results expressed the exothermic nature of adsorption on the basis of negative value of enthalpy change. Column sorption method was also adapted to check the feasibility of the adsorption process through the investigation of flow rate, breakthrough curve and pre-concentration factor which is found to be 13 for DMP and DEP and 16 for DAP and DBP. Methanol was found to be best solvent for the recovery of phthalates. Application in real water samples also showed good efficiency of PNS derived carbon for the removal of phthalates.  相似文献

A new Schiff base (HL) derived from condensation of p-anisidine and acetyl acetone has been prepared and used as a chelating ligand to prepare Cr(III), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The study of the nature of these complexes formed in ethanol solution following the mole ratio method (2:1, L:M) gave results which were compared successfully with these obtained from isolated solid state studies. These studies revealed that the complexes having square planner geometry of the type (ML2), M = Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II), and octahedral geometry of the type [CrIIIL2(H2O)2]Cl and [MNIIL2(H2O)2]. The adsorption studies of three complexes Cr(III), Mn(II), and Co(II) on activated carbon, H and Na-forms of purolite S-930 resin show high adsorption percentage for Cr(III) on purolite S-930 due to ion exchange interaction compared with high adsorption of neutral Mn(II), Co(II) complexes on activated charcoal. Linear plot of log Qe versus log Ce showed that the adsorption isotherm of these three complexes on activated carbon, H and Na-forms of purolite S-930 surface obeys Freundlich isotherm and was similar to S-curve type according to Giles classification which investigates heterogeneous adsorption. The regression values indicate that the adsorption data for these complexes fitted well within the Freundlich isothermal plots for the concentration studied. The accuracy and precision of the concentration measurements of these complexes were determined by preparing standard laboratory samples, the results show relative error ranging from ±1.08 to 5.31, ±1.04 to 4.82 and ±0.28 to 3.09 and the relative standard deviation did not exceed ±6.23, ±2.77 and ±4.38% for A1, A2 and A3 complexes, respectively.  相似文献
