Multiple Solutions and Its Morse Index for One-Dimensional Nonlinear Problem

The multiple solutions for one-dimensional cubic nonlinear problem u" u~3=0,u(0)=u(π)=0are computed,on the basis of the eigenpairs of-φ"_k=λ_(kφk),k=1,2,3....There exist two nonzero solutions±u_k corresponding to each k,and their Morse index MI(k) for 1(?)k(?)20 is to be exactly determined.It isshown by the numerical results that MI(k)(?)k.     

Morse index of layered solutions to the heterogeneous Allen-Cahn equation

Let u? be a single layered radially symmetric unstable solution of the Allen-Cahn equation −?²Δu=u(u−a(|x|))(1−u) over the unit ball with Neumann boundary conditions. We estimate the small eigenvalues of the linearized eigenvalue problem at u? when ? is small. As a consequence, we prove that the Morse index of u? is asymptotically given by [μ^∗+o(1)]?−(N−1)/2 with μ^∗ a certain positive constant expressed in terms of parameters determined by the Allen-Cahn equation. Our estimates on the small eigenvalues have many other applications. For example, they may be used in the search of other non-radially symmetric solutions, which will be considered in forthcoming papers.     

Regularity and Morse Index of the Solutions to Critical Quasilinear Elliptic Systems

Regularity results and critical group estimates are studied for critical (p, r)-systems. Multiplicity results of solutions for a critical potential quasilinear system are also proved using Morse theory.     

The Morse Index of Wente Tori

We find various lower and upper bounds for the index of Wente tori that contain a continuous family of planar principal curves. We then prove a result that gives an algorithm for computing the index sharply.     

A Morse Index Theorem for Elliptic Operators on Bounded Domains

Given a selfadjoint, elliptic operator L, one would like to know how the spectrum changes as the spatial domain Ω ? ? ⁿ is deformed. For a family of domains {Ω _t } _{t∈[a, b]} we prove that the Morse index of L on Ω _a differs from the Morse index of L on Ω _b by the Maslov index of a path of Lagrangian subspaces on the boundary of Ω. This is particularly useful when Ω _a is a domain for which the Morse index is known, e.g. a region with very small volume. Then the Maslov index computes the difference of Morse indices for the “original” problem (on Ω _b ) and the “simplified” problem (on Ω _a ). This generalizes previous multi-dimensional Morse index theorems that were only available on star-shaped domains or for Dirichlet boundary conditions. We also discuss how one can compute the Maslov index using crossing forms, and present some applications to the spectral theory of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary value problems.

Positive and Nontrivial Solutions for the Urysohn Integral Equation

We establish new criteria for the existence of either positive or nonzero solutions of the Urysohn integral equation. We also discuss the existence of an interval of positive eigenvalues and sufficient conditions for the existence of at least a positive eigenvalue with a nonzero or positive eigenfunction for the Urysohn integral operator. Among others, we employ techniques based on fixed point index theory for compact maps, which are new for this type of equation.     

The Relation of the Morse Index of Closed Geodesics with the Maslov-type Index of Symplectic Paths

In this paper, we consider the relation of the Morse index of a closed geodesic with the Maslov–type index of a path in a symplectic group. More precisely, for a closed geodesic c on a Riemannian manifold M with its linear Poincaré map P (a symplectic matrix), we construct a symplectic path γ(t) starting from identity I and ending at P, such that the Morse index of the closed geodesic c equals the Maslov–type index of γ. Morse index and the stability of closed geodesics

Let ind(c) be the Morse index of a closed geodesic c in an(n+1)-dimensional Riemannian manifold M.We prove that an oriented closed geodesic c is unstable if n + ind(c) is odd and a non-oriented closed geodesic c is unstable if n + ind(c) is even.Our result is a generalization of the famous theorem due to Poincar'e which states that the closed minimizing geodesic on a Riemann surface is unstable.     

The Exact Limits and Improved Decay Estimates for All Order Derivatives of the Global Weak Solutions to a Two-Dimensional Incompressible Dissipative Quasi-Geostrophic Equation

We will accomplish the exact limits for all order derivatives of the global weak solutions to a two-dimensional incompressible dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation. We will also establish the improved decay estimates with sharp rates for all order derivatives. We will consider two cases for the initial function and the external force and prove the optimal results for both cases. We will couple together existing ideas (including the Fourier transformation and its properties, Parseval''s identity, iteration technique, Lebesgue''s dominated convergence theorem, Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev interpolation inequality, squeeze theorem, Cauchy-Schwartz''s inequality, etc) existing results (the existence of global weak solutions, the existence of local smooth solution on $(T,\infty)$ and the elementary decay estimate with a sharp rate) and a few novel ideas to obtain the main results.

In this paper, we study the regularity of solutions for two-dimensional Cahn-Hilliard equation with non-constant mobility. Basing on the L^p type estimates and Schauder type estimates, we prove the global existence of classical solutions.
