In this paper are investigated maximum bipartite subgraphs of graphs, i.e., bipartite subgraphs with a maximum number of edges. Such subgraphs are characterized and a criterion is given for a subgraph to be a unique maximum bipartite subgraph of a given graph. In particular maximum bipartite subgraphs of cubic graphs are investigated. It is shown that cubic graphs can be built up from five building stones (called elementary paths). Finally the investigation of a special class of cubic graphs yields a theorem which characterizes the Petersen graph and the dodecahedron graph by means of their maximum bipartite subgraphs.  相似文献

The notion of distance-heredity in graphs has been extended to construct the class of almost distance-hereditary graphs (an increase of the distance by one unit is allowed by induced subgraphs). These graphs have been characterized in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs [M. Aïder, Almost distance-hereditary graphs, Discrete Math. 242 (1–3) (2002) 1–16]. Since the distance in bipartite graphs cannot increase exactly by one unit, we have to adapt this notion to the bipartite case.In this paper, we define the class of bipartite almost distance-hereditary graphs (an increase of the distance by two is allowed by induced subgraphs) and obtain a characterization in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs.  相似文献

We prove a necessary condition for polynomial solvability of the jump number problem in classes of bipartite graphs characterized by a finite set of forbidden induced bipartite subgraphs. For some classes satisfying this condition, we propose polynomial algorithms to solve the jump number problem.  相似文献

The problem of finding large complete subgraphs in bipartite graphs (that is, bicliques) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem referred to as the maximum-edge biclique problem (MBP), and has many applications, e.g., in web community discovery, biological data analysis and text mining. In this paper, we present a new continuous characterization for MBP. Given a bipartite graph $G$ , we are able to formulate a continuous optimization problem (namely, an approximate rank-one matrix factorization problem with nonnegativity constraints, R1N for short), and show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between (1) the maximum (i.e., the largest) bicliques of $G$ and the global minima of R1N, and (2) the maximal bicliques of $G$ (i.e., bicliques not contained in any larger biclique) and the local minima of R1N. We also show that any stationary points of R1N must be close to a biclique of $G$ . This allows us to design a new type of biclique finding algorithm based on the application of a block-coordinate descent scheme to R1N. We show that this algorithm, whose algorithmic complexity per iteration is proportional to the number of edges in the graph, is guaranteed to converge to a biclique and that it performs competitively with existing methods on random graphs and text mining datasets. Finally, we show how R1N is closely related to the Motzkin–Strauss formalism for cliques.  相似文献

We consider the problem of covering the edge set of an unweighted, undirected graph with the minimum number of connected bipartite subgraphs (where the subgraphs are not necessarily bicliques). We show that this is an NP-hard problem, provide lower bounds through an integer programming formulation, propose several constructive heuristics and a local search, and discuss computational results. Finally, we consider a constrained variant of the problem which we show to be NP-hard, and provide an integer programming formulation for the variant.  相似文献

The relation of chromatic aspects and the existence of certain induced subgraphs of a triangle-free graph will be investigated. Based on a characterization statement of Pach, some results on the chromatic number of triangle-free graphs with certain forbidden induced subgraphs will be refined by describing their structure in terms of homomorphisms. In particular, we introduce chordal triangle-free graphs as a natural superclass of chordal bipartite graphs and describe the structure of the maximal triangle-free members. Finally, we improve on the upper bound for the chromatic number of triangle-free sK2-free graphs by 1 for s2 giving the tight bound for s=3.  相似文献

We show new lower and upper bounds on the maximum number of maximal induced bipartite subgraphs of graphs with n vertices. We present an infinite family of graphs having 105n/10 ≈ 1.5926n; such subgraphs show an upper bound of O(12n/4) = O(1.8613n) and give an algorithm that finds all maximal induced bipartite subgraphs in time within a polynomial factor of this bound. This algorithm is used in the construction of algorithms for checking k‐colorability of a graph. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 48: 127–132, 2005  相似文献

We show that if G is a bipartite graph with no induced cycles on exactly 6 vertices, then the minimum number of chain subgraphs of G needed to cover E(G) equals the chromatic number of the complement of the square of line graph of G. Using this, we establish that for a chordal bipartite graph G, the minimum number of chain subgraphs of G needed to cover E(G) equals the size of a largest induced matching in G, and also that a minimum chain subgraph cover can be computed in polynomial time. The problems of computing a minimum chain cover and a largest induced matching are NP-hard for general bipartite graphs. Finally, we show that our results can be used to efficiently compute a minimum chain subgraph cover when the input is an interval bigraph.  相似文献

We show that the line graph of any balanced hypergraph is neighbourhood-perfect. This result is a hypergraphic extension of a recent theorem in [GKLM] saying that the line graphs of bipartite graphs are neighbourhood-perfect. The note contains also a graphical extension of the same theorem: the characterization of all graphs with neighbourhood-perfect line graph. The proof relies on a characterization of neighbourhood-perfect graphs among line graphs in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs.  相似文献

We consider connected bipartite graphs that have a color-inverting involution and do not contain an induced path of length 5. It is shown that such graphs have a color-preserving involution or a dominating edge, or else contain one of two simple forbidden subgraphs.  相似文献

For a connected finite graph G and a subset V0 of its vertex set, a distance-residual subgraph is a subgraph induced on the set of vertices at the maximal distance from V0. Some properties and examples of distance-residual subgraphs of vertex-transitive, edge-transitive, bipartite and semisymmetric graphs are presented. The relations between the distance-residual subgraphs of product graphs and their factors are explored.  相似文献

A graph is balanced if its clique-matrix contains no edge–vertex incidence matrix of an odd chordless cycle as a submatrix. While a forbidden induced subgraph characterization of balanced graphs is known, there is no such characterization by minimal forbidden induced subgraphs. In this work, we provide minimal forbidden induced subgraph characterizations of balanced graphs restricted to graphs that belong to one of the following graph classes: complements of bipartite graphs, line graphs of multigraphs, and complements of line graphs of multigraphs. These characterizations lead to linear-time recognition algorithms for balanced graphs within the same three graph classes.  相似文献

Bipartite dimensions and bipartite degrees of graphs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A cover (bipartite) of a graph G is a family of complete bipartite subgraphs of G whose edges cover G's edges. G'sbipartite dimension d(G) is the minimum cardinality of a cover, and its bipartite degree η(G) is the minimum over all covers of the maximum number of covering members incident to a vertex. We prove that d(G) equals the Boolean interval dimension of the irreflexive complement of G, identify the 21 minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for d 2, and investigate the forbidden graphs for d n that have the fewest vertices. We note that for complete graphs, d(Kn) = [log2n], η(Kn) = d(Kn) for n 16, and η(Kn) is unbounded. The list of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for η 2 is infinite. We identify two infinite families in this list along with all members that have fewer than seven vertices.  相似文献

A graph is polar if the vertex set can be partitioned into A and B in such a way that the subgraph induced by A is a complete multipartite graph and the subgraph induced by B is a disjoint union of cliques. Polar graphs are a common generalization of bipartite, cobipartite, and split graphs. However, recognizing polar graphs is an NP-complete problem in general. This led to the study of the polarity of special classes of graphs such as cographs and chordal graphs, cf. Ekim et al. (2008) [7] and [5]. In this paper, we study the polarity of line graphs and call a graph line-polar if its line graph is polar. We characterize line-polar bipartite graphs in terms of forbidden subgraphs. This answers a question raised in the fist reference mentioned above. Our characterization has already been used to develop a linear time algorithm for recognizing line-polar bipartite graphs, cf. Ekim (submitted for publication) [6].  相似文献

Given two fixed graphs X and Y, the (X,Y)-intersection graph of a graph G is a graph where

1. each vertex corresponds to a distinct induced subgraph in G isomorphic to Y, and

2. two vertices are adjacent iff the intersection of their corresponding subgraphs contains an induced subgraph isomorphic to X.

This notion generalizes the classical concept of line graphs since the (K1,K2)-intersection graph of a graph G is precisely the line graph of G.

Let ( , respectively) denote the family of line graphs of bipartite graphs (bipartite multigraphs, respectively), and refer to a pair (X,Y) as a 2-pair if Y contains exactly two induced subgraphs isomorphic to X. Then and , respectively, are the smallest families amongst the families of (X,Y)-intersection graphs defined by so called hereditary 2-pairs and hereditary non-compact 2-pairs. Furthermore, they can be characterized through forbidden induced subgraphs. With this motivation, we investigate the properties of a 2-pair (X,Y) for which the family of (X,Y)-intersection graphs coincides with (or ). For this purpose, we introduce a notion of stability of a 2-pair and obtain the desired characterization for such stable 2-pairs. An interesting aspect of the characterization is that it is based on a graph determined by the structure of (X,Y).  相似文献

Maximal complete subgraphs and clique trees are basic to both the theory and applications of chordal graphs. A simple notion of strong clique tree extends this structure to strongly chordal graphs. Replacing maximal complete subgraphs with open or closed vertex neighborhoods discloses new relationships between chordal and strongly chordal graphs and the previously studied families of chordal bipartite graphs, clique graphs of chordal graphs (dually chordal graphs), and incidence graphs of biacyclic hypergraphs. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polar cographs
Polar graphs are a natural extension of some classes of graphs like bipartite graphs, split graphs and complements of bipartite graphs. A graph is (s,k)-polar if there exists a partition A,B of its vertex set such that A induces a complete s-partite graph (i.e., a collection of at most s disjoint stable sets with complete links between all sets) and B a disjoint union of at most k cliques (i.e., the complement of a complete k-partite graph).Recognizing a polar graph is known to be NP-complete. These graphs have not been extensively studied and no good characterization is known. Here we consider the class of polar graphs which are also cographs (graphs without induced path on four vertices). We provide a characterization in terms of forbidden subgraphs. Besides, we give an algorithm in time O(n) for finding a largest induced polar subgraph in cographs; this also serves as a polar cograph recognition algorithm. We examine also the monopolar cographs which are the (s,k)-polar cographs where min(s,k)?1. A characterization of these graphs by forbidden subgraphs is given. Some open questions related to polarity are discussed.  相似文献

A chordal graph is called restricted unimodular if each cycle of its vertex‐clique incidence bipartite graph has length divisible by 4. We characterize these graphs within all chordal graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs, by minimal relative separators, and in other ways. We show how to construct them by starting from block graphs and multiplying vertices subject to a certain restriction, which leads to a linear‐time recognition algorithm. We show how they are related to other classes such as distance‐hereditary chordal graphs and strongly chordal graphs. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 30: 121–136, 1999  相似文献

We consider bipartite subgraphs of sparse random graphs that are regular in the sense of Szemerédi and, among other things, show that they must satisfy a certain local pseudorandom property. This property and its consequences turn out to be useful when considering embedding problems in subgraphs of sparse random graphs. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Random Struct.
