In this study, transient soot formation processes in a small-scale jet burner (CRIEPI burner) were investigated by simultaneous measurements of coal particles, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot. Pairs of simultaneous measurements of “Mie scattering measurement for coal particles with laser induced fluorescence (LIF) for PAHs” and “LIF for PAHs with laser induced incandescence (LII) for soot” were performed to understand the transitive formation processes of soot formation in pulverized coal flame, whose signals were successfully separated. Findings in the present study are as follows. Coal particles, PAHs and soot were distributed in this order in radial direction from the central axis. Existing regions of coal particles, PAHs and soot were overlapped from the time averaged viewpoint while there were few overlapping areas of coal particles, PAHs and soot from the instantaneous viewpoint. This result indicates that a long time is required for the formation of soot from 2 to 3 rings PAHs through larger PAHs.  相似文献

Large Eddy simulation (LES) has been applied to the pulverised coal jet flame studied at the Japanese Central Research Institute of Electric Power (CRIEPI). A working set of models to represent coal combustion, Lagrangian particle transport and radiative heat transfer in an LES framework has been implemented and tested. The simulation results of the flow field were compared to experimental data for both a reactive and non-reactive case, and an overall good agreement emerged. A simple method for replicating pyrometer measurements was developed for the LES and results obtained from the method were compared to the experimental data. Finally the species concentrations were compared to experimental results for CO2, O2 and N2. The results show the potentials of using LES for pulverised coal combustion and open the way for further developments on the coal combustion models and the applications to more complex burners.  相似文献

Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is utilized to investigate soot evolution in a series of turbulent nonpremixed bluff body flames featuring different bluff body diameters. The modeling framework relies on recent development in the soot subfilter Probability Density Function (PDF) model that can correctly account for the distribution of soot with respect to mixture fraction, correcting errors in previous soot subfilter PDF models that significantly overpredict soot oxidation. With the previous soot subfilter PDF model, no soot was observed outside of the recirculation zone in past studies on similar bluff body flames. Results obtained with the current LES modeling approach compare favorably with the experimental measurements of the flow field and the soot volume fraction. Notably, the current LES modeling approach correctly predicts large soot volume fractions in the recirculation zone, a decrease in the soot volume fraction through the high-strain neck region, and then an increase again in the downstream jet-like region. Consistent with the experimental measurements, the larger bluff body diameter, with its larger recirculation zone with longer residence times, generates more soot in the recirculation zone and also more soot in the high-strain neck region. Analysis of the soot volume fraction source terms lead to mechanistic understanding of soot evolution in the entirety of the bluff body flames. Most of the soot generated in the recirculation zone is oxidized but some escapes unoxidized and is passively transported through the neck region. Virtually no new soot forms in the downstream jet-like region, and the increase in the soot volume fraction in the jet-like region is due to acetylene-based surface growth of the soot transported through the neck region. This mechanism could not be predicted with the previous soot subfilter PDF model, with the recent soot subfilter PDF model being critical in the understanding of this basic mechanism.  相似文献

Soot formation characteristics of a lab-scale pulverized coal flame were investigated by performing carefully controlled laser diagnostics. The spatial distributions of soot volume fraction and the pulverized coal particles were measured simultaneously by laser induced incandescence (LII) and Mie scattering imaging, respectively. In addition, the radial distributions of the soot volume fraction were compared with the OH radical fluorescence, gas temperature and oxygen concentration obtained in our previous studies [1], [2]. The results indicated that the laser pulse fluence used for LII measurement should be carefully controlled to measure the soot volume fraction in pulverized coal flames. To precisely measure the soot volume fraction in pulverized coal flames using LII, it is necessary to adjust the laser pulse fluence so that it is sufficiently high to heat up all the soot particles to the sublimation temperature but also sufficiently low to avoid including a too large of a change in the morphology of the soot particles and the superposition of the LII signal from the pulverized coal particles on that from the soot particles. It was also found that the radial position of the peak LII signal intensity was located between the positions of the peak Mie scattering signal intensity and peak OH radical signal intensity. The region, in which LII signal, OH radical fluorescence and Mie scattering coexisted, expanded with increasing height above the burner port. It was also found that the soot formation in pulverized coal flames was enhanced at locations where the conditions of high temperature, low oxygen concentration and the existence of pulverized coal particles were satisfied simultaneously.  相似文献

The dynamics of soot formation in turbulent ethylene-air nonpremixed counterflow flames is studied using direct numerical simulation (DNS) with a semi-empirical soot model and the discrete ordinate method (DOM) as a radiation solver. Transient characteristics of soot behavior are studies by a model problem of flame interaction with turbulence inflow at various intensities. The interaction between soot and turbulence reveals that the soot volume fraction depends on the combined effects of the local conditions of flow, temperature, and fuel concentration, while the soot number density depends predominantly on the high temperature regions. Depending on the relative strength between mixing and reaction, the effects of turbulence on the soot formation lead to three distinct paths in deviating the data points away from the laminar flame conditions. It is found that turbulence has twofold effects of increasing the overall soot yield by generating additional flame volume and of reducing soot by dissipating soot pockets out of high-temperature regions. The relative importance between the two effects depends on the relative length scales of turbulence and flame, suggesting that a nonmonotonic response of soot yield to turbulence level may be expected in turbulent combustion.  相似文献

Diesel spray and combustion in a constant-volume engine cylinder was simulated by a large eddy simulation (LES) approach coupling with a multicomponent vapourisation (MCV) modelling. The simulation focused on the inclusion of the interaction between fuel spray and gas-phase turbulence flow at the sub-grid scale. The LES was based on the dynamic structure sub-grid model, and an additional source term was added to the filtered momentum equation to account for the effect of drop motion on the gas-phase turbulence. The multicomponent drop vapourisation modelling was based on the continuous thermodynamics approach using a gamma distribution to describe the complex diesel fuel composition and was capable of predicting a more complex drop vapourisation process. The effect of gas-phase turbulence flow on the fuel drop vapourisation process was evaluated through the solution of the gas-phase moments of the distribution in the present LES framework. A non-evaporative spray in a constant-volume engine cylinder was first simulated to examine the behaviours of LES, in comparison with a Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulation based on the RNG k? model. More realistic diesel spray structures and improved agreement on liquid penetration length with the corresponding experimental data were predicted by the LES, using a grid resolution close to that of RANS. A more comprehensive simulation of diesel spray and combustion in cylindrical combustor was also performed. Predicted distributions of soot particles were compared to the experimental image, and improved agreement with the experimental data was also observed by using the present LES and MCV models. Consequently, results of the present models proved that improved overall performance of the fuel spray simulation can be achieved by the LES without a significant increase in the computational load compared to the RANS.  相似文献

An extended flamelet/progress variable (EFPV) model for simulating pulverised coal combustion (PCC) in the context of large eddy simulation (LES) is proposed, in which devolatilisation, char surface reaction and radiation are all taken into account. The pulverised coal particles are tracked in the Lagrangian framework with various sub-models and the sub-grid scale (SGS) effects of turbulent velocity and scalar fluctuations on the coal particles are modelled by the velocity-scalar joint filtered density function (VSJFDF) model. The presented model is then evaluated by LES of an experimental piloted coal jet flame and comparing the numerical results with the experimental data and the results from the eddy break up (EBU) model. Detailed quantitative comparisons are carried out. It is found that the proposed model performs much better than the EBU model on radial velocity and species concentrations predictions. Comparing against the adiabatic counterpart, we find that the predicted temperature is evidently lowered and agrees well with the experimental data if the conditional sampling method is adopted.  相似文献

An aerosol model to simulate soot formation and growth was developed using moving- and fixed-sectional methods. The new model is composed of a set of subroutines that can be easily combined with the Chemkin package. Using the model, we have simulated soot formation and growth in plug flow reactors.

Our model was compared with a previously published method of moments model for a simulation of the plasma pyrolysis of methane in a plug flow reactor. Inclusion of the transition correction factor for the condensation coefficient led to the prediction of a smaller condensation rate compared with the method of moments model. The average coagulation rate calculated by the sectional model was much higher than that by the method of moments model for a broad particle size distribution. The two models predicted significantly different soot precursor concentration and rates of aerosol processes, but substantially similar particle mass and number for the pyrolysis process.

We have also simulated soot formation and growth in a jet-stirred/plug flow reactor (JSR/PFR) system for which soot size distribution measurements are available in the literature. It is shown that the adjusted-point fixed-sectional method can provide comparable accuracy to the moving-sectional model in a simulation of soot formation and growth. It is also shown that the measured surface growth rate could be much higher than the value used in this study. Soot mass concentrations and size distributions for particles larger than 10 nm were well predicted with a surface reaction enhancement. The primary particle size was underpredicted by only about 30% compared with the measurements, without any model adjustments. As the new model can predict both the particle size distribution and structure, and is suitable for application in complex flows, its application to diverse soot formation conditions will enhance our knowledge on the evolution of soot structures.  相似文献

A numerical and experimental study is performed to investigate soot formation from jet fuel in a laminar coflow diffusion flame. The combustion chemistry of the fuel is simulated using (1) the MURI jet fuel surrogate (Dooley et al. 2012) with a modestly reduced Ranzi mechanism (Ranzi et al. 2012), and (2) the recently proposed HyChem model (Xu et al. 2018) combined with the KAUST PAH mechanism 2 (Wang et al. 2013). The two reaction mechanisms are coupled with a sectional soot model to simulate a coflow diffusion flame of methane doped with the MURI jet fuel surrogate. The combined laser extinction and two-angle elastic light scattering method is used to perform non-intrusive in situ measurements of soot volume fraction, primary particle diameter and number density. The good agreement including soot particle size and number density between the experimental data and the simulation results computed with the reduced Ranzi mechanism demonstrate the robustness of the soot model to changes in fuel composition, as the model parameters are unchanged with a previous numerical study of soot formation of n-propylbenzene/n-dodecane mixtures (Zhang and Thomson, 2018). The computation with the combined HyChem/KAUST mechanism predicts similar results as the computation with the detailed chemistry of the reduced Ranzi mechanism for fuel breakdown, thus the basic premise of the HyChem model that the fuel decomposition process can be greatly simplified with the lumped reaction steps is supported. The results also show that by adding a PAH growth scheme to the HyChem model, the approach can be used to predict soot formation from jet fuel combustion in a laminar coflow diffusion flame. Finally, the dependency of the soot prediction on PAH chemistry is discussed and it is suggested that more experimental data is needed to validate the PAH mechanism and improve the predictive accuracy of the model.  相似文献

Soot production in turbulent flames is an extremely intermittent phenomenon since it is the result of specific thermochemical conditions occasionally occurring in space and time. In realistic configurations such as the swirling flames used in gas-turbines, the presence of large-scale flow motions can additionally affect soot formation processes, leading to even more pronounced intermittency. Classically, the validation of numerical simulations is performed by comparing time-averaged results with experimental data of the phenomenon under investigation. This comparison can be considered as rigorous only if a statistically converged numerical representation is obtained. In case of sporadic events such as intermittent soot formation in turbulent flames, this means to perform the simulation over thousands of milliseconds of physical time, which can have extremely high CPU demands when performing Large Eddy Simulation (LES). In this work, a possible strategy to overcome this issue is proposed based on the use of high-speed measurements and numerically synthesized signals from LES. To illustrate the approach, numerical and experimental soot light scattering signals are considered here by looking at the model aero-engine combustor developed at DLR for the study of pressurized swirled sooting flames. The light scattering signal is numerically synthesized from an LES. Experimental high-speed measurements are used to statistically account for the high temporal and spatial variability of soot when considering time intervals similar to what is today achievable with LES. The feasibility of this approach is finally demonstrated by comparing numerical results to the ensemble of possible soot production states observed experimentally in the DLR burner allowing to eventually validate the present LES results.  相似文献

The effects of pressure on soot formation and the structure of the temperature field were studied in co-flow methane-air laminar diffusion flames over a wide pressure range, from 10 to 60 atm in a high-pressure combustion chamber. The selected fuel mass flow rate provided diffusion flames in which the soot was completely oxidized within the visible flame envelope and the flame was stable at all pressures considered. The spatially resolved soot volume fraction and soot temperature were measured by spectral soot emission as a function of pressure. The visible (luminous) flame height remained almost unchanged from 10 to 100 atm. Peak soot concentrations showed a strong dependence on pressure at relatively lower pressures; but this dependence got weaker as the pressure is increased. The maximum conversion of the fuel’s carbon to soot, 12.6%, was observed at 60 atm at approximately the mid-height of the flame. Radial temperature gradients within the flame increased with pressure and decreased with flame height above the burner rim. Higher radial temperature gradients near the burner exit at higher pressures mean that the thermal diffusion from the hot regions of the flame towards the flame centerline is enhanced. This leads to higher fuel pyrolysis rates causing accelerated soot nucleation and growth as the pressure increases.  相似文献

The influence of preferential diffusion on soot formation in a laminar ethylene/air diffusion flame was investigated by numerical simulation using three different transport property calculation methods. One simulation included preferential diffusion and the other two neglected preferential diffusion. The results show that the neglect of preferential diffusion or the use of unity Lewis number for all species results in a significant underprediction of soot volume fraction. The peak soot volume fraction is reduced from 8.0 to 2.0 ppm for the studied flame when preferential diffusion is neglected in the simulation. Detailed examination of numerical results reveals that the underprediction of soot volume fraction in the simulation neglecting preferential diffusion is due to the slower diffusion of some species from main reaction zone to PAH and soot formation layer. The slower diffusion of these species causes lower PAH formation rate and thus results in lower soot inception rate and smaller particle surface area. The smaller surface area further leads to smaller surface growth rate. In addition, the neglect of preferential diffusion also leads to higher OH concentration in the flame, which causes the higher specific soot oxidation rate. The lower inception rate, smaller surface growth rate and higher specific oxidation rate results in the lower soot volume fraction when preferential diffusion is neglected. The finding of the paper implies the importance of preferential diffusion for the modeling of not only laminar but maybe also some turbulent flames.  相似文献

Soot aggregate formation and size distribution in a laminar ethylene/air coflow diffusion flame is modeled with a PAH-based soot model and an advanced sectional aerosol dynamics model. The mass range of solid soot phase is divided into 35 discrete sections and two variables are solved for in each section. The coagulation kernel of soot aggregates is calculated for the entire Knudsen number regime. Radiation from gaseous species and soot are calculated by a discrete-ordinate method with a statistical narrow-band correlated-k based band model. The discretized sectional soot equations are solved simultaneously to ensure convergence. Parallel computation with the domain decomposition method is used to save computational time. The flame temperature, soot volume fraction, primary particle size and number density are well reproduced. The number of primary particles per aggregate is overpredicted. This discrepancy is presumably associated with the unitary coagulation efficiency assumption in the current sectional model. Along the maximum soot volume fraction pathline, the number-based and mass-based aggregate size distribution functions are found to evolve from unimodal to bimodal and finally to unimodal again. The different shapes of these two aggregate size distribution functions indicate that the total number and mass of aggregates are dominated by aggregates of different sizes. The PAH-soot condensation efficiency γ is found to have a small effect on soot formation when γ is larger than 0.5. However, the soot level and primary particle number density are significantly overpredicted if the PAH-soot condensation process is neglected. Generally, larger γ predicts lower soot level and primary particle number density. Further study on soot aggregate coagulation efficiency should be pursued and more experimental data on soot aggregate structure and size distribution are needed for improving the current sectional soot model and for better understanding the complex soot aggregation phenomenon.  相似文献

In this paper, the correlations between coal/char fragmentation and fly ash formation during pulverized coal combustion are investigated. We observed an explosion-like fragmentation of Zhundong coal in the early devolatilization stage by means of high-speed photography in the Hencken flat-flame burner. While high ash-fusion (HAF) bituminous and coal-derived char samples only undergo gentle perimeter fragmentation in the char burning stage. Simultaneously, combustion experiments of two kinds of coals were conducted in a 25?kW down-fired combustor. The particle size distributions (PSDs) of both fine particulates (PM1-10) and bulk fly ash (PM10+) were measured by Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) and Malvern Mastersizer 2000, respectively. The results show that the mass PSD of residual fly ash (PM1+) from Zhundong coal exhibits a bi-modal shape with two peaks located at 14?µm and 102?µm, whereas that from HAF coal only possesses a single peak at 74?µm. A hybrid model accounting for multiple-route ash formation processes is developed to predict the PSD of fly ash during coal combustion. By incorporating coal/char fragmentation sub-models, the simulation can quantitatively reproduce the measured PM1+ PSDs for different kinds of coals. The sensitivity analysis further reveals that the bi-modal mass distribution of PM1+ intrinsically results from the coal fragmentation during devolatilization.  相似文献

A multiphase flamelet/progress variable (FPV) model for the large eddy simulation (LES) of gas-assisted pulverised coal combustion (PCC) is developed. The target of the simulation is the Darmstadt turbulent gas-assisted swirling solid fuel combustion chamber. The coal particles are treated as Lagrangian point particles, the position, momentum and energy of which are tracked. The gas phase is described by the low-Mach Navier-Stokes equations alongside the Eulerian transport equations of the governing variables for the FPV model. The set of chemical states of the PCC flame is pre-tabulated in a six-dimensional flamelet table and determined by the mixing of the primary fuel stream, volatiles and char off-gases with the oxidising air, the progress of chemical reactions, the interphase heat transfer, as well as sub-grid scale variations. A presumed β-PDF approach for the total mixture fraction is applied to capture sub-grid scale effects. The discrete ordinate method (DOM) with the weighted sum of grey gases model (WSGGM) is employed to model radiation. The FPV-LES results are validated against the experimental evidence and a good agreement of the predicted mean and RMS velocities, as well as the mean gas temperature between experiments and simulations is obtained. The contributions of the pilot, volatile and char off-gas fuel streams to the coal flame are analysed. It is found that most regions of the furnace are dominated by either pilot or volatile combustion, while char conversion only occurs in the far downstream and outer furnace regions. The pilot gas dominates the near-wall region inside the quarl, whereas the volatile gas mainly released from small particles dominates a first volatile combustion zone in the interior of the internal recirculation zone. Larger particles heat up more slowly and release their volatile content further downstream, leading to a secondary volatile combustion zone.  相似文献
