We show that the newly discovered 52Cr Bose condensate in zero magnetic field can be a spin nematic of the following kind: a "maximum" polar state, a "colinear" polar state, or a biaxial nematic ferromagnetic state. We also present the phase diagram with a magnetic field in the interaction subspace containing the chromium condensate. It contains many uniaxial and biaxial spin nematic phases, which often but not always break time reversal symmetry, and can exist with or without spontaneous magnetization.  相似文献

We study a time-reversal invariant non-Abelian spin-liquid state in an SU(2) symmetric spin S=1 quantum magnet on a triangular lattice. The spin liquid is obtained by quantum disordering a noncollinear nematic state. We show that such a spin liquid cannot be obtained by the standard projective construction for spin liquids. We also study the phase transition between the spin liquid and the noncollinear nematic state and show that it cannot be described within the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm.  相似文献

We study the effect of interionic anisotropy on the phase states of a non-Heisenberg ferromagnet with magnetic ion spin S = 1. It is shown that depending on the relation between the interionic anisotropy constants, uniaxial and angular ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic phases exist in the system. We analyze the dynamic properties of the system in the vicinity of orientational phase transitions, as well as a phase transition in the magnetic moment magnitude. It is shown that orientational phase transitions in ferromagnetic and nematic phases can be first- as well as second-order.  相似文献

We explore the ground states and quantum phase transitions of two-dimensional, spin S=1/2, antiferromagnets by generalizing lattice models and duality transforms introduced by Sachdev and Jalabert (1990, Mod. Phys. Lett. B4, 1043). The minimal model for square lattice antiferromagnets is a lattice discretization of the quantum nonlinear sigma model, along with Berry phases which impose quantization of spin. With full SU(2) spin rotation invariance, we find a magnetically ordered ground state with Néel order at weak coupling and a confining paramagnetic ground state with bond charge (e.g., spin Peierls) order at strong coupling. We study the mechanisms by which these two states are connected in intermediate coupling. We extend the minimal model to study different routes to fractionalization and deconfinement in the ground state, and also generalize it to cases with a uniaxial anisotropy (the spin symmetry groups is then U(1)). For the latter systems, fractionalization can appear by the pairing of vortices in the staggered spin order in the easy-plane; however, we argue that this route does not survive the restoration of SU(2) spin symmetry. For SU(2) invariant systems we study a separate route to fractionalization associated with the Higgs phase of a complex boson measuring noncollinear, spiral spin correlations: we present phase diagrams displaying competition between magnetic order, bond charge order, and fractionalization, and discuss the nature of the quantum transitions between the various states. A strong check on our methods is provided by their application to S=1/2 frustrated antiferromagnets in one dimension: here, our results are in complete accord with those obtained by bosonization and by the solution of integrable models.  相似文献

In this Letter we study various spin correlated insulating states of F=2 cold atoms in optical lattices. We find that the effective spin exchange interaction due to virtual hopping contains an octopole coupling between two neighboring lattice sites. Depending on scattering lengths and numbers of particles per site the ground states are either rotationally invariant dimer or trimer Mott insulators or insulating states with various spin orders. Three spin-ordered insulating phases are ferromagnetic, cyclic, and nematic Mott insulators. We estimate the phase boundaries for states with different numbers of atoms per lattice site.

The ground state phase diagram of a general isotropic spin-3/2 system with nearest-neighbor exchange is shown to contain unconventionally ordered spin nematic and antinematic states, as well as usual ferro- and antiferromagnetic phases. The two nematic phases have spontaneously broken rotational symmetry characterized by the long-range order of the nematic director u, as well as the broken time-reversal symmetry described by the pseudospin vector σ. Nematic phase differs from antinematic one by the type of ordering in σ vectors (uniform versus staggered). The ferromagnet-nematic and antiferromagnet-antinematic phase boundaries exhibit enhanced Sp(4) symmetry and correspond to the recently studied effective theory for spin-3/2 cold gases. We discuss optical properties and topological defects in the nematic phases.  相似文献

We study theoretically the destruction of spin nematic order due to quantum fluctuations in quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 magnets. If the nematic ordering is disordered by condensing disclinations, then quantum Berry phase effects induce dimerization in the resulting paramagnet. We develop a theory for a Landau-forbidden second order transition between the spin nematic and dimerized states found in recent numerical calculations. Numerical tests of the theory are suggested.  相似文献

We study the ground state of two vertically coupled quantum dots as a function of the interdot distance within the spin density functional theory. The tunneling between the dots is included. For small and large interdot distances the atomic phases are recovered. For intermediate distances new molecule-type phases are predicted which can be observed experimentally in the addition energies. The results are interpreted in terms of an effective single particle picture and we find that Hund's rule breaks down for 11 and 12 electrons. The results are summarized in a phase diagram in which spin and isospin blockade regions are also found.  相似文献

The phase behavior of rod-plate mixtures was investigated using model systems containing unambiguously rod- and plate-shaped colloids. We find that the theoretically disputed biaxial nematic phase is unstable with respect to demixing into an isotropic and two uniaxial nematic phases. The phase behavior at very high densities is exceptionally rich and includes the coexistence of up to four different liquid crystalline phases, which stem from the coupling between the employed particle shapes and polydispersity.  相似文献

Summary The structures of the interface between an isotropic liquid and a nematic liquid crystal and also between different uniaxial nematic phases are studied. It is shown that, at a planar orientation in the case of the nematic-isotropic liquid interface and also at a mutually orthogonal orientation of the director in the case of two nematic phases, the interface has the structure of a biaxial nematic liquid crystal. We consider a spin-1/2 tube (a three-leg ladder with periodic boundary conditions) with a Hamiltonian given by two projection operators-one on the triangles and the other on the square plaquettes on the side of the tube-that can be written in terms of Heisenberg and four-spin ring exchange interactions. We identify 3 phases: (i)?for strongly antiferromagnetic exchange on the triangles, an exact ground state with a gapped spectrum can be given as an alternation of spin and chirality singlet bonds between nearest triangles; (ii)?for ferromagnetic exchange on the triangles, we recover the phase of the spin-3/2 Heisenberg chain; (iii)?between these two phases, a gapless incommensurate phase exists. We construct an exact ground state with two deconfined domain walls and a gapless excitation spectrum at the quantum phase transition point between the incommensurate and dimerized phases.  相似文献

We have investigated spin singlet Mott states of spin-one bosons with antiferromagnetic interactions. These spin singlet states do not break rotational symmetry and exhibit remarkably different macroscopic properties compared with nematic Mott states of spin-one bosons. We demonstrate that the dynamics of spin singlet Mott states is fully characterized by even- or odd-class quantum dimer models. The difference between spin singlet Mott states for even and odd numbers of atoms per site can be attributed to a selection rule in the low energy sectors of on-site Hilbert spaces; alternatively, it can also be attributed to an effect of Berry’s phases on bosonic Mott states. We also discuss evidence for spin singlet quantum condensate of spin-one atoms. Our main finding is that in a projected spin singlet Hilbert space, the low energy physics of spin-one bosons is equivalent to that of a Bose-Hubbard model for spinless bosons interacting via Ising gauge fields. The other major finding is spin-charge separation in some one-dimensional Mott states. We propose charge-e spin singlet superfluid for an odd number of atoms per lattice site and charge-2e spin singlet superfluid for an even number of atoms per lattice site in one-dimensional lattices. All discussions in this article are limited to integer numbers of bosons per site.  相似文献

We report on the coherent optical excitation of electron spin polarization in the ground state of charged GaAs quantum dots via an intermediate charged exciton (trion) state. Coherent optical fields are used for the creation and detection of the Raman spin coherence between the spin ground states of the charged quantum dot. The measured spin decoherence time, which is likely limited by the nature of the spin ensemble, approaches 10 ns at zero field. We also show that the Raman spin coherence in the quantum beats is caused not only by the usual stimulated Raman interaction but also by simultaneous spontaneous radiative decay of either excited trion state to a coherent combination of the two spin states.  相似文献

We propose an optical lattice setup to investigate spin chains and ladders. Electric and magnetic fields allow us to vary at will the coupling constants, producing a variety of quantum phases including the Haldane phase, critical phases, quantum dimers, etc. Numerical simulations are presented showing how ground states can be prepared adiabatically. We also propose ways to measure a number of observables, like energy gap, staggered magnetization, end-chain spins effects, spin correlations, and the string-order parameter.  相似文献

We present quantum Monte Carlo results for a square-lattice S=1/2 XY model with a standard nearest-neighbor coupling J and a four-spin ring exchange term K. Increasing K/J, we find that the ground state spin stiffness vanishes at a critical point at which a spin gap opens and a striped bond-plaquette order emerges. At still higher K/J, this phase becomes unstable and the system develops a staggered magnetization. We discuss the quantum phase transitions between these phases.  相似文献

We have mapped out a detailed phase diagram that shows the ground state structure of a spin-1 condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. We show that the interplay between the dipolar and the spin-exchange interactions induces a rich variety of quantum phases that exhibit spontaneous magnetic ordering in the form of intricate spin textures.  相似文献

We study geometric phases of the ground states of inhomogeneous XY spin chains in transverse fields with Dzyaloshinski--Moriya (DM) interaction, and investigate the effect of the DM interaction on the quantum phase transition (QPT) of such spin chains. The results show that the DM interaction could influence the distribution of the regions of QPTs but could not produce new critical points for the spin-chain. This study extends the relation between geometric phases and QPTs.  相似文献

We consider the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with alternating spin exchange in the presence of additional modulation of exchange on odd bonds with period 3. We study the ground state magnetic phase diagram of this hexamer spin chain in the limit of very strong antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange on odd bonds using the numerical Lanczos method and bosonization approach. In the limit of strong magnetic field commensurate with the dominating AF exchange, the model is mapped onto an effective XXZ Heisenberg chain in the presence of uniform and spatially modulated fields, which is studied using the standard continuum-limit bosonization approach. In the absence of additional hexamer modulation, the model undergoes a quantum phase transition from a gapped phase into the only one gapless Lüttinger liquid (LL) phase by increasing the magnetic field. In the presence of hexamer modulation, two new gapped phases are identified in the ground state at magnetization equal to [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] of the saturation value. These phases reveal themselves also in the magnetization curve as plateaus at corresponding values of magnetization. As a result, the magnetic phase diagram of the hexamer chain shows seven different quantum phases, four gapped and three gapless, and the system is characterized by six critical fields which mark quantum phase transitions between the ordered gapped and the LL gapless phases.  相似文献

The phase diagrams of transitions from an isotropic phase to nematic and smectic phases are investigated within a simple phenomenological model of the Landau thermodynamic potential. The conditions of the isomorphic phase transition between two uniaxial smectic phases and the direct transition from the isotropic phase to the uniaxial and biaxial smectic phases are determined. The behavior of the order parameters is described along different thermodynamic paths. The theoretical results are discussed using the example of liquid-crystal phases in compounds with banana-shaped achiral molecules.  相似文献
