This work is devoted to the relationship between topological properties of a space and those of (= the space of continuous real-valued functions on , with the topology of pointwise convergence). The emphasis is on -compactness of and on location of in . In particular, -compact cosmic spaces are characterized in this way.

Baire and     
Let be a locally compact Hausdorff space and let be the Banach space of all bounded complex Radon measures on . Let and be the -rings generated by the compact subsets and by the compact subsets of , respectively. The members of are called Baire sets of and those of are called -Borel sets of (since they are precisely the -bounded Borel sets of ). Identifying with the Banach space of all Borel regular complex measures on , in this note we characterize weakly compact subsets of in terms of the Baire and -Borel restrictions of the members of . These characterizations permit us to give a generalization of a theorem of Dieudonné which is stronger and more natural than that given by Grothendieck.

In this paper (weakly) separating maps between spaces of bounded continuous functions over a nonarchimedean field are studied. It is proven that the behaviour of these maps when is not locally compact is very different from the case of real- or complex-valued functions: in general, for -compact spaces and , the existence of a (weakly) separating additive map implies that and are homeomorphic, whereas when dealing with real-valued functions, this result is in general false, and we can just deduce the existence of a homeomorphism between the Stone-Cech compactifications of and . Finally, we also describe the general form of bijective weakly separating linear maps and deduce some automatic continuity results.

In this paper we consider the theta correspondence between the sets and when is a nonarchimedean local field and . Our main theorem determines all the elements of that occur in the correspondence. The answer involves distinguished representations. As a corollary, we characterize all the elements of that occur in the theta correspondence between and . We also apply our main result to prove a case of a new conjecture of S.S. Kudla concerning the first occurrence of a representation in the theta correspondence.

We show a maximum principle for -harmonic maps with -finite energy. As an application we can generalize a non-existence theorem for harmonic maps with finite Dirichlet integral by Schoen and Yau to those maps.

One of the well-known convergence acceleration methods, the -algorithm is investigated from the viewpoint of the Toda molecule equation. It is shown that the error caused by the algorithm is evaluated by means of solutions for the equation. The acceleration algorithm based on the discrete Toda molecule equation is also presented.

Let be an action of by continuous automorphisms of a compact abelian group . A point in is called homoclinic for if as . We study the set of homoclinic points for , which is a subgroup of . If is expansive, then is at most countable. Our main results are that if is expansive, then (1) is nontrivial if and only if has positive entropy and (2) is nontrivial and dense in if and only if has completely positive entropy. In many important cases is generated by a fundamental homoclinic point which can be computed explicitly using Fourier analysis. Homoclinic points for expansive actions must decay to zero exponentially fast, and we use this to establish strong specification properties for such actions. This provides an extensive class of examples of -actions to which Ruelle's thermodynamic formalism applies. The paper concludes with a series of examples which highlight the crucial role of expansiveness in our main results.

The five parameter family of Koornwinder's multivariable analogues of the Askey-Wilson polynomials is studied with four parameters generically complex. The Koornwinder polynomials form an orthogonal system with respect to an explicit (in general complex) measure. A partly discrete orthogonality measure is obtained by shifting the contour to the torus while picking up residues. A parameter domain is given for which the partly discrete orthogonality measure is positive. The orthogonality relations and norm evaluations for multivariable -Racah polynomials and multivariable big and little -Jacobi polynomials are proved by taking suitable limits in the orthogonality relations for the Koornwinder polynomials. In particular new proofs of several well-known -analogues of the Selberg integral are obtained.

In this paper, we establish formulas for the configuration of a special class of irreducible representations of the Cuntz algebra , . These irreducible representations arise as subrepresentations of naturally occurring representations of acting in and arise from consideration of multiresolution wavelet filters.

In this paper, we prove that if a perfect GO-space has a -discrete dense set, then has a perfect linearly ordered extension. This answers a problem raised by H. R. Bennett, D. J. Lutzer and S. Purisch. And the result is also a partial answer to an old problem posed by H. R. Bennett and D. J. Lutzer.

Oversteegen and Tymchatyn proved that homeomorphism groups of positive dimensional Menger compacta are -dimensional by proving that almost -dimensional spaces are at most -dimensional. These homeomorphism groups are almost -dimensional and at least -dimensional by classical results of Brechner and Bestvina. In this note we prove that almost -dimensional spaces for are -dimensional. As a corollary we answer in the affirmative an old question of R. Duda by proving that every hereditarily locally connected, non-degenerate, separable, metric space is -dimensional.

On any manifold , the de Rham operator (with respect to a complete Riemannian metric), with the grading of forms by parity of degree, gives rise by Kasparov theory to a class , which when is closed maps to the Euler characteristic in . The purpose of this note is to give a quick proof of the (perhaps unfortunate) fact that is as trivial as it could be subject to this constraint. More precisely, if is connected, lies in the image of (induced by the inclusion of a basepoint into ).

The author answers a question raised in the literature about twenty five years ago and raised again more recently in Open Problems in Topology, by G. M. Reed, concerning the conjecture that every Moore space with a -discrete -base can be densely embedded in a Moore space having the Baire property. Even though closely related results have made this conjecture seem likely to be true, the author shows that, surprisingly, the conjecture is false.

We consider finite subsets satisfying the extension property, i.e. the property that every collection of complex numbers which is positive-definite on is the restriction to of the Fourier coefficients of some positive measure on . A simple algebraic condition on the set of trigonometric polynomials with non-zero coefficients restricted to is shown to imply the failure of the extension property for . This condition is used to characterize the one-dimensional sets satisfying the extension property and to provide many examples of sets failing to satisfy it in higher dimensions. Another condition, in terms of unitary matrices, is investigated and is shown to be equivalent to the extension property. New two-dimensional examples of sets satisfying the extension property are given as well as explicit examples of collections for which the extension property fails.
