Davenport—Schinzel sequences are sequences that do not contain forbidden subsequences of alternating symbols. They arise in the computation of the envelope of a set of functions. We obtain almost linear upper bounds on the length λs(n) of Davenport—Schinzel sequences composed ofn symbols in which no alternating subsequence is of length greater thans+1. These bounds are of the formO(nα(n)O(α(n)5-3)), and they generalize and extend the tight bound Θ(nα(n)) obtained by Hart and Sharir for the special cases=3 (α(n) is the functional inverse of Ackermann’s function), and also improve the upper boundO(n log*n) due to Szemerédi. Summary This paper is concerned with second order differential systems involving two parameters with boundary conditions specified at three points. In particular, we consider the system y' = k(x, λ, μ)z, z' = -g(x, λ, μ)y, where k and g are real-valued junctions defined on X: a ≤ x ≤ c, L: L1 < λ < L2, and M: M1 < μ < M2. This system is studied together with the boundary conditions α(λ, μ)y(a) - β(λ, μ)z(a)=0, γ(λ, μ)y(b) - δ(λ, μ)z(b)=0, ε1(μ)y(b) - φ1(μ)z(b)=ε2(μ)y(c) - φ2(μ)z(c), where α, β, δ, γ, εi, φi, i=1, 2, are continuous functions of the parameters. This work establishes the existence of eigenvalue pairs for the boundary problem and the oscillatory behavior of the associated solutions. These results complement those previously obtained by the authors and B. D. Sleeman, where boundary conditions of the ? Sturm-Liouville ? type were studied. Entrata in Redazione il 5 dicembre 1977. In this paper, the authors give a characterization of the (L p, λ , L q, λ )-compactness for the Riesz potential commutator [b,I α ]. More precisely, the authors prove that the commutator [b,I α ] is a compact operator from the Morrey space L p, λ (ℝ n ) to L q, λ (ℝ n ) if and only if b ∈ VMO(ℝ n ), the BMO-closure of . Let G be a mixed glaph which is obtained from an undirected graph by orienting some of its edges. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of G are, respectively, defined to be those of the Laplacian matrix L(G) of G. As L(G) is positive semidefinite, the singularity of L(G) is determined by its least eigenvalue λ1 (G). This paper introduces a new parameter edge singularity εs(G) that reflects the singularity of L(G), which is the minimum number of edges of G whose deletion yields that all the components of the resulting graph are singular. We give some inequalities between εs(G) and λ1 (G) (and other parameters) of G. In the case of εs(G) = 1, we obtain a property on the structure of the eigenvectors of G corresponding to λ1 (G), which is similar to the property of Fiedler vectors of a simple graph given by Fiedler.  相似文献

The h-super connectivity κh and the h-super edge-connectivity λh are more refined network reliability indices than the conneetivity and the edge-connectivity. This paper shows that for a connected balanced digraph D and its line digraph L, if D is optimally super edge-connected, then κ1(L) = 2λ1 (D), and that for a connected graph G and its line graph L, if one of κ1 (L) and λ(G) exists, then κ1(L) = λ2(G). This paper determines that κ1(B(d, n) is equal to 4d- 8 for n = 2 and d ≥ 4, and to 4d-4 for n ≥ 3 and d ≥ 3, and that κ1(K(d, n)) is equal to 4d- 4 for d 〉 2 and n ≥ 2 except K(2, 2). We consider the nonlinear Sturm–Liouville problem

To understand well the global behavior of the bifurcation branch in R + × L 2(I), we establish the precise asymptotic formula for λ(α), which is associated with eigenfunction u α with ‖ u α2 = α, as α → ∞. It is shown that if for some constant p > 1 the function h(u) ≔ f(u)/u p satisfies adequate assumptions, including a slow growth at ∞, then λ(α) ∼ α p−1 h(α) as α → ∞ and the second term of λ(α) as α → ∞ is determined by lim u → ∞ uh′(u). We force 2 λ to be large, and for many pairs in the interval (λ, 2 λ ) a strong version of the polarized partition relations holds. We apply this to problems in general topology. For example, consistently, every 2 λ is the successor of a singular and for every Hausdorff regular space X, hd(X) ≤ s(X)+3, hL(X) ≤ s(X)+3 and better when s(X) is regular, via a halfgraph partition relations. We study the harmonic analysis of Bernoulli measures μ λ , a one-parameter family of compactly supported Borel probability measures on the real line. The parameter λ is a fixed number in the open interval (0,1). The measures μ λ may be understood in any one of the following three equivalent ways: as infinite convolution measures of a two-point probability distribution; as the distribution of a random power series; or as an iterated function system (IFS) equilibrium measure determined by the two transformations λ(x±1). For a given λ, we consider the harmonic analysis in the sense of Fourier series in the Hilbert space L 2(μ λ ). For L 2(μ λ ) to have infinite families of orthogonal complex exponential functions e 2πis(⋅), it is known that λ must be a rational number of the form \fracm2n\frac{m}{2n}, where m is odd. We show that L2(m\frac12n)L^{2}(\mu_{\frac{1}{2n}}) has a variety of Fourier bases; i.e. orthonormal bases of exponential functions.
