Three multielement methods: (1) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), (2) inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), and (3) spark source mass spectrometry (SSMS) were used for the determination of additives in the samples of germanium and germanium oxide. The detection limits of direct SSMS and ICP-AES/ICP-MS were compared using the autoclave predissolution of germanium and germanium dioxide samples. It was shown that in the latter case, the detection limits could be significantly improved by the separation of germanium from analytes by distillation. In this case, the detection limits of such limiting elements like Th and U can reach the level n 10?10 wt %.  相似文献

A new version of the direct injection nebulizer (DIN) is used to interface liquid chromatographic (LC) separations with element-selective detection using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The DIN injects all of the sample into the ICP and has a dead volume of less than 1 microliter. Charged species of arsenic and tin are separated as ion pairs on a micro-scale (1 mm i.d.), packed, reversed-phase column. Detection limits are 0.2-0.6 pg for arsenic and 8-10 pg for tin. For methanol + water eluents, the signal is highest at 25% methanol and stays within 25% of this maximum as the methanol fraction is varied from 20 to 80%. Compared with LC-ICP-MS with conventional nebulizers, the absolute detection limits and chromatographic resolution are substantially superior, and the dependence of analyte signal on solvent composition is somewhat less severe with the DIN.  相似文献

A detailed comparison of the performance of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), with quadrupole and double-focusing instruments for the speciation of selenium in urine has been carried out. Selenium sensitivity about 23-59 times higher with double-focusing ICP-MS detection was observed, but limits of detection were only 1-8.7 times better because of background noise. Selenium species separation has been carried out by both reversed-phase and vesicle-mediated high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), coupled on-line with the detector via conventional nebulization and via on-line focused microwave digestion-hydride generation. A remarkable improvement in sensitivity (28-110 times better for (77)Se depending on the chromatographic system) and elimination of interference problems from the urinary matrix or the components of the mobile phases were achieved when an on-line microwave digestion-hydride generation interface was used, but the background noise was much higher than with conventional nebulization. Therefore, the limits of detection were not as low as expected from such improvement in the sensitivity. More selenocompounds can be separated, and a slight improvement in the sensitivity and limits of detection was obtained when the vesicle-mediated HPLC system was used as compared with reverse-phase chromatography. However, the use of several complementary chromatographic systems, such as reverse-phase HPLC, is recommended to bring some light on the selenocompounds present in basal human urine. Comparative data of rat urine speciation are also given.  相似文献

1. An on-line hyphenation of reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is applied, using an ultrasonic nebuliser combined with a membrane desolvator as the interface. Thus, organic solvents (e.g. methanol, hexane) or gradients (e.g. methanol/water) as well as aqueous NaHCO3/NaCl mixtures can be directly used without influence on the plasma. The high resolution power of HPLC enables the separation of Pt-species, whereas ICP-MS is taken for element specific detection with low detection limits. 2. Additionally, a powerful on-line coupling of capillary electrophoresis (CE) and ICP-MS [1, 2] was used for platinum speciation in parallel. With these two methods, independent from each other, first characterisation is achieved about the nature of Pt species formed by interaction with a soil. Aqueous extracts of a clay-like humic soil, treated with a Pt contaminated tunnel dust and Pt model compounds [3] were examined to elucidate transformation processes of Pt-species in a soil. Enantioseparation and determination of selenomethionine enantiomers in selenized yeast was investigated using chiral separation techniques based on different principles, coupled on-line to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for selenium-specific detection. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) on a beta-cyclodestrin (beta-CD) column, cyclodextrin-modified micellar electrokinetic chromatography (CD-MEKC), gas chromatography (GC) on a Chirasil-L-Val column, and HPLC on a Chirobiotic T column have been investigated as the chiral separation techniques. For HPLC separation on the beta-CD column, and also for CD-MEKC, selenomethionine enantiomers were derivatized with NDA/CN(-). For chiral separation by GC, selenomethionine enantiomers were converted into their N-trifluoroacetyl (TFA)-O-alkyl esters. The developed hybridation methodologies are compared with respect to enantioselectivity, sensitivity and analysis time. The usefulness of the best-suited method [HPLC (Chirobiotic T)-ICP-MS] was demonstrated by its application to the successful chiral speciation of selenium and D-and L-selenomethionine content determination in selenized yeast.  相似文献

A method is presented for arsenic speciation analysis of an oyster sample using ion chromatography coupled with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instrument. A strong anion exchange resin was employed with a step gradient elution of 0.1 mM/0.1 M K 2 SO 4 at pH 10.2. Arsenobetaine and dimethylarsinic acid were determined following extraction based on trypsin enzymolysis with 95-100% extraction efficiency. Limits of detection in the range 0.1-0.3 mg kg m 1 of arsenic were obtained for organic arsenic species. No inorganic arsenic was detected. Validation was performed using TORT-2 as a certified reference material. Although high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to ICP-MS is an effective method for speciation analysis it is not always necessary to obtain such a detailed picture. A simple liquid chromatographic separation technique based upon mini-column technology is presented. It was developed to obtain a fast, efficient and reliable separation of inorganic from organic, i.e. assumed toxic from non-toxic, arsenic and selenium species suitable for use as an initial screening method for environmental analysis. Two types of strong anion exchange resin were tested. Excellent separation was obtained for both min-column resins and analysis times were within 7 min. Limits of detection obtained for inorganic arsenic, organic arsenic, selenomethionine, Se IV and Se VI were 1.6, 1.8, 66, 32 and 22 µg kg m 1 , respectively.  相似文献

A low flow, parallel path Mira Mist CE nebulizer designed for capillary electrophoresis (CE) was evaluated as a function of make-up solution flow rate, composition, and concentration, as well as the nebulizer gas flow rate. This research was conducted in support of a project related to the separation and quantification of cobalamin (vitamin B-12) species using microseparation techniques combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detection. As such, Co signals were monitored during the nebulizer characterization process. Transient effects in the ICP were studied to evaluate the suitability of using gradients for microseparations and the benefit of using methanol for the make-up solution was demonstrated. Co signal response changed significantly as a function of changing methanol concentrations of the make-up solution and maximum signal enhancement was seen at 20% methanol with a 15 μl/min flow rate. Evaluation of the effect of changing the nebulizer gas flow rates showed that argon flows from 0.8 to 1.2 l/min were equally effective. The Mira Mist CE parallel path nebulizer was then evaluated for interfacing capillary microseparation techniques including capillary electrophoresis (CE) and micro high performance liquid chromatography (μHPLC) to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A mixture of four cobalamin species standards (cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, methylcobalamin, and 5′ deoxyadenosylcobalamin) and the corrinoid analogue cobinamide dicyanide were successfully separated using both CE-ICP-MS and μHPLC-ICP-MS using the parallel path nebulizer with a make-up solution containing 20% methanol with a flow rate of 15 μl/min.  相似文献

Elemental speciation is becoming a common analytical procedure for geochemical investigations. The various redox species of environmentally relevant metals can have vastly different biogeochemical properties, including sorption, solubility, bioavailability, and toxicity. The use of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to elemental specific detectors, such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), has become one of the most important speciation methods employed. This is due to the separation versatility of HPLC and the sensitive and selective detection capabilities of ICP-MS. The current study compares standard mode ICP-MS to recently developed reaction cell (RC) ICP-MS, which has the ability to remove or reduce many common polyatomic interferences that can limit the ability of ICP-MS to quantitate certain analytes in complex matrices. Determination of chromium and selenium redox species is achieved using ion-exchange chromatography with elemental detection by standard and RC-ICP-MS, using various chromium and selenium isotopes. In this study, method performance and detection limits for the various permutations of the method (isotope monitored or ICP-MS detection mode) were found to be comparable and generally less than 1 μg L−1. The method was tested on synthetic laboratory samples, surface water, groundwater, and municipal tap water matrices.  相似文献

Elemental wine analysis is often required from a nutritional, toxicological, origin and authenticity point of view. Inductively coupled plasma based techniques are usually employed for this analysis because of their multi-elemental capabilities and good limits of detection. However, the accurate analysis of wine samples strongly depends on their matrix composition (i.e. salts, ethanol, organic acids) since they lead to both spectral and non-spectral interferences. To mitigate ethanol (up to 10% w/w) related matrix effects in inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), a microwave-based desolvation system (MWDS) can be successfully employed. This finding suggests that the MWDS could be employed for elemental wine analysis. The goal of this work is to evaluate the applicability of the MWDS for elemental wine analysis in ICP-AES and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). For the sake of comparison a conventional sample introduction system (i.e. pneumatic nebulizer attached to a spray chamber) was employed. Matrix effects, precision, accuracy and analysis throughput have been selected as comparison criteria. For ICP-AES measurements, wine samples can be directly analyzed without any sample treatment (i.e. sample dilution or digestion) using pure aqueous standards although internal standardization (IS) (i.e. Sc) is required. The behaviour of the MWDS operating with organic solutions in ICP-MS has been characterized for the first time. In this technique the MWDS has shown its efficiency to mitigate ethanol related matrix effects up to concentrations of 1% (w/w). Therefore, wine samples must be diluted to reduce the ethanol concentration up to this value. The results obtained have shown that the MWDS is a powerful device for the elemental analysis of wine samples in both ICP-AES and ICP-MS. In general, the MWDS has some attractive advantages for elemental wine analysis when compared to a conventional sample introduction system such as: (i) higher detection capabilities; (ii) lower ethanol matrix effects; and (iii) lower spectral interferences (i.e. ArC(+)) in ICP-MS.  相似文献

Nowadays much attention is being paid to the determination of trace amounts of noble metals in geological, industrial, biological and environmental samples. The most promising techniques, such as inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS) are characterized by high sensitivity. However, the accurate determination of trace noble metals has been limited by numerous interferences generated from the presence of matrix elements. To decrease, or eliminate, these interferences, the sorption preconcentration of noble metals is often used prior to their instrumental detection. A great number of hyphenated methods of noble metal determination using sorption preconcentration have been developed. This review describes the basic types of available sorbents, preconcentration procedures and preparations of the sorbent to the subsequent determination of noble metals. The specific features of instrumental techniques and examples of ETAAS, FAAS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS determinations after the sorption preconcentration of noble metals are considered. Abstract

The extraction of the chemical species Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb, operationally defined, from a sewage sludge treated soil with various extractants (ammonium acetate, acetic acid and EDTA) has been studied by using two analytical techniques: inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). A comparison of the mean values measured by the two techniques with the t-criterion reveal that the differences are not significant in all the extractants mentioned above.

Results are also compared with data from a laboratory intercomparison exercise organized in the BCR-programme (Bureau Communautaire de Reference) and discussed. A fast screening of the concentration of other trace metals could be provided by ICP-MS with good precision and low detection limits.  相似文献

Capillary liquid chromatography (cLC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) have been critically compared for the separation of metalloproteins when using collision-cell inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-CC-MS) as detection system. For cLC separation, the selected column was a C8 (0.3 mm I.D.) and the separation conditions involved a gradient up to 80% methanol in 10mM ammonium acetate buffer (pH 7.4). The low flow rate used (3 microL min(-1)) permitted the utilization of a high methanol content maintaining the sensitivity along the whole chromatographic run. For this purpose, a new low-flow interface has been developed based on a total consumption nebulizer. Similarly, CE has been studied as separation technique using a 75 microm I.D. fused silica capillary and a running buffer of 20 mM Tris-HNO3 (pH 7.4) and working at 30 kV. Metallothionein (mixture of MT-I and -II) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) have been used as protein models in order to evaluate the separation/detection capabilities using the same injection volumes in both systems (20 nL). For both hybrid systems, separation parameters such as retention factor, numbers of theoretical plates, tailing factor and resolution have been critically compared. Also, the analytical performance characteristics of both hybrid systems have been evaluated and tested by analyzing the Cu-, Zn-species present in red blood cell extracts in order to explore more adequate separation methodology for the analysis of metalloproteins in complex matrices.  相似文献

An environmentally friendly and simple method has been developed for complete digestion of lead, cadmium and antimony from soil samples using a magnesium nitrate assisted dry ashing procedure. Statistical data for a series of experiments with standard reference materials are presented, and precision values are found to be comparable for inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and for inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. From a single digest solution all analytes are quantified without involving any pre-concentration routes. Inter-method comparison of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) shows that the probability of the results being different is less than 99%.  相似文献

An evaluation of reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) employing mobile phases compatible with direct coupling to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is described for the selective and sensitive detection of organotin species. The findings of this study are compared with established methods, employing ion-exchange chromatography. In order to achieve optimum performance, both the HPLC and ICP-MS were optimized for speciation work. The results from studies using various mobile phases for the separation of a range of tin compounds (inorganic tin, tributyltin, dibutyltin and monobutyltin) are discussed both in terms of resolution and compatibility with ICP-MS instrumentation. Tropolone, a commonly used complexing agent for organotin species, is also discussed with reference to the chromatographic separation of tin species. Finally, the role of isotope dilution analysis in conjunction with HPLC-ICP-MS for organotin speciation is described with respect to the European Community Standards, Measurements and Testing (BCR) certified material programme.  相似文献

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) has been studied as a means for the detection of carbon to provide a 'universal' method for detecting organic compounds in chromatographic eluents. Carbon is particularly difficult to ionise and the amount of carbon present in normal chromatographic systems leads to high backgrounds, making detection a challenge. Novel separation approaches were therefore employed, using either entirely aqueous eluents (at temperatures of 60 and 160 degrees C, dependent on the column used) to eliminate the organic modifier completely, or isotopically enriched solvents. For the aqueous eluents, detection limits for sulphanilamide were found to be 2.26 microg, corresponding to 1.13 micromol (0.47 micromol of carbon), injected on a conventional 4.6 mm i.d. column. The use of a narrow bore column with highly isotopically enriched 12C-methanol (99.95 atom%) as organic modifier for the mobile phase enabled the detection of 86 micromol for 13C-triple-labelled caffeine and 79 micromol for 13C-double-labelled phenacetin. The sensitive detection of 12C-compounds with 13C-enriched methanol as organic modifier proved impractical due to a lower level of isotopic enrichment (99 atom%) of this solvent, with the residual 12C-methanol resulting in significant interference.  相似文献

Flow injection analysis (FIA) with ESI-MS and ion chromatography (IC) with inductively coupled plasma-MS (ICP-MS) as the complementary technique have been explored for the determination of metal ions as their metal-EDTA complexes. ESI-MS enabled the identification of metal-EDTA complexes such as [Mn(EDTA)](2-), [Co(EDTA)](2-), [Ni(EDTA)](2-), [Cu(EDTA)](2-), [Zn(EDTA)](2-), [Pb(EDTA)](2-), and [Fe(EDTA)](1-) and their MS spectral showed that these metal-EDTA complexes were present in solution. Based on the ESI-MS, ion chromatographic separation and ICP-MS detection of these complexes are possible because IC-ICP-MS requires stable metal-EDTA complex during the chromatographic separation. The separation of these metal-EDTA complexes was achieved on an anion-exchange column with a mobile phase containing 30 mM NH(4)(HPO(4))(2) at pH 7.5 within 7 min with ICP-MS providing element specific detection. The ICP-MS LODs for the metal-EDTA were in the range of 0.1-0.5 microg/L with the exception of Fe (15 microg/L). The proposed method was a simple procedure for sample processing, using direct injection of sample without removal of sample matrix and was successfully applied to the determination of metal-EDTA complexes in real samples.  相似文献

Titanium was determined in nano-titanium(IV) oxide food packaging by microwave digestion with inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Microwave digestion was optimized using different acid combinations. Both spectrometry techniques showed good reproducibility, repeatability, and recovery. For ICP-AES, the limit of detection was 5.0 mg kg?1, the linear dynamic range was 100–5000 µ g L?1, the average recoveries for blank samples spiked with titanium were between 94.7% and 100.1%, and the relative standard deviations were from 2.1% to 7.1%. By ICP-MS, the limit of detection was 0.3 mg kg?1, the linear dynamic range was 0.5–200 µ g L?1, the recoveries were 88.4%–96.3%, and the relative standard deviations were 6.3%–7.4%. These results indicated that methods were effective for the determination of titanium in food packaging.  相似文献
