This study is focused on the formation of polymer/silica nanocomposite particles prepared by the surfactant-free aqueous emulsion polymerization of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) in the presence of 19 nm glycerol-functionalized aqueous silica nanoparticles using a cationic azo initiator at 60 °C. The TFEMA polymerization kinetics are monitored using 1H NMR spectroscopy, while postmortem TEM analysis confirms that the final nanocomposite particles possess a well-defined core–shell morphology. Time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is used in conjunction with a stirrable reaction cell to monitor the evolution of the nanocomposite particle diameter, mean silica shell thickness, mean number of silica nanoparticles within the shell, silica aggregation efficiency and packing density during the TFEMA polymerization. Nucleation occurs after 10–15 min and the nascent particles quickly become swollen with TFEMA monomer, which leads to a relatively fast rate of polymerization. Additional surface area is created as these initial particles grow and anionic silica nanoparticles adsorb at the particle surface to maintain a relatively high surface coverage and hence ensure colloidal stability. At high TFEMA conversion, a contiguous silica shell is formed and essentially no further adsorption of silica nanoparticles occurs. A population balance model is introduced into the SAXS model to account for the gradual incorporation of the silica nanoparticles within the nanocomposite particles. The final PTFEMA/silica nanocomposite particles are obtained at 96% TFEMA conversion after 140 min, have a volume-average diameter of 216 ± 9 nm and contain approximately 274 silica nanoparticles within their outer shells; a silica aggregation efficiency of 75% can be achieved for such formulations.

SAXS is used to study the formation of polymer/silica nanocomposite particles prepared by surfactant-free aqueous emulsion polymerization of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate in the presence of silica nanoparticles using a azo initiator at 60 °C.  相似文献

Highly monodisperse particles composed of a magnetic silica core and fluorescent polymer shell were synthesized with a combined technique of heterocoagulation and soap-free emulsion polymerization. Prior to heterocoagulation, monodisperse, submicrometer-sized silica particles were prepared with the Stober method, and magnetic nanoparticles were prepared with a modified Massart method in which a cationic silane coupling agent of N-trimethoxysilylpropyl- N, N, N-trimethylammonium chloride was added just after coprecipitation of Fe (2+) and Fe (3+). The silica particles with negative surface potential were heterocoagulated with the magnetic nanoparticles with positive surface potential. The magnetic silica particles obtained with the heterocoagulation were treated with sodium silicate to modify their surfaces with silica. In the formation of a fluorescent polymer shell onto the silica-coated magnetic silica cores, an amphoteric initiator of 2,2'-azobis[ N-(2-carboxyethyl)-2-2-methylpropionamidine] (VA-057) was used to control the colloidal stability of the magnetic cores during the polymer coating. The polymerization of St in the presence of a hydrophobic fluorophore of pyrene could coat the cores with fluorescent polymer shells, resulting in monodisperse particles with a magnetic silica core and fluorescent polymer shell. Measurements of zeta potential for the composite particles in different pH values indicated that the composite particles had an amphoteric property originating from VA-057 initiator.  相似文献

The efficient synthesis of all-acrylic, film-forming, core-shell colloidal nanocomposite particles via in situ aqueous emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with n-butyl acrylate in the presence of a glycerol-functionalized ultrafine silica sol using a cationic azo initiator at 60 °C is reported. It is shown that relatively monodisperse nanocomposite particles can be produced with typical mean weight-average diameters of 140-330 nm and silica contents of up to 39 wt %. The importance of surface functionalization of the silica sol is highlighted, and it is demonstrated that systematic variation of parameters such as the initial silica sol concentration and initiator concentration affect both the mean particle diameter and the silica aggregation efficiency. The nanocomposite morphology comprises a copolymer core and a particulate silica shell, as determined by aqueous electrophoresis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. Moreover, it is shown that films cast from n-butyl acrylate-rich copolymer/silica nanocomposite dispersions are significantly more transparent than those prepared from the poly(styrene-co-n-butyl acrylate)/silica nanocomposite particles reported previously. In the case of the aqueous emulsion homopolymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of ultrafine silica, a particle formation mechanism is proposed to account for the various experimental observations made when periodically sampling such nanocomposite syntheses at intermediate comonomer conversions.  相似文献

We describe the synthesis and the physical properties of suspensions of colloidal silicon and silica rodlike particles. In addition to pure silicon and pure silica rods, we have also synthesized silicon rods with a silica shell and silica rods with a fluorescent silica layer. Pre-patterned p-type (100) silicon wafers were electrochemically etched in electrolyte solutions containing hydrogen fluoride. By the current density being varied while etching, macropores were etched with controllable modulated pore diameters. These silicon structures were transformed into rods with indentations 5.5 mum apart and with lengths up to 100 mum using iterative oxidation in air and dissolution of the silica by HF. Complete oxidation of these rods was also achieved. Sonication of the modulated rods resulted in monodisperse particles of 5.5 mum length and 300 nm width. A high yield of 10(12) particles, or more, is possible with this method. At high concentrations, these particles show nematic ordering in charge-stabilized suspensions. The oxidized silica outer layer of the silicon rods makes the further growth of silica in solution or on a wafer possible. This allows for control of the particles' interaction potential. Labeling with a fluorescent dye and index matching of the complete silica rods enable the study of concentrated dispersions quantitatively, on a single particle level, with confocal microscopy. Because of their high refractive index in the near-IR, the nematic phases of rods with a silica core are also interesting for photonic applications.  相似文献

Dual functions of magnetic and fluorescent properties were created in composite particles that incorporated magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles in particle cores of silica and fluorescent pyrene in particle shells of polystyrene. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared with a conventional homogeneous precipitation method and surface modified with a coupling agent of carboxyethylsilanetriol. The silica particles incorporating Fe3O4 nanoparticles were synthesized with a modified Stöber method in which the Fe3O4 nanoparticles were added to a system of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS)/ammonia/water/ethanol. Then, the magnetite/silica composite particles were coated with the pyrene/polystyrene shell in a soap-free emulsion polymerization, which was conducted in the presence of pyrene in a mixed solvent of water/ethanol. The composite particles prepared in the mixed solvent had both magnetic and fluorescent properties. The fluorescent spectrum of the particles with Fe3O4 was very similar to that without Fe3O4, indicating that the magnetic component within the core particles scarcely interfered with the fluorescent emission from the polymer shell.  相似文献

Hexagonal platy composite particles with a hydrotalcite core and a nanoporous silica shell with a thickness of ca. 100 nm were synthesized by the reaction of a Mg-Al hydrotalcite with a homogeneous aqueous solution containing tetraethoxysilane, hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride, ammonia and methanol at 3 degrees C. The calcination of the products at 500 degrees C in air led to the composite particle with a Mg/Al mixed oxide core and a nanoporous silica shell. Hexagonal platy particles of nanoporous silica with a pore diameter of 2.3 nm and BET surface area of 700 m(2) (g of silica)(-1) were obtained by removing the Mg/Al mixed oxide core.  相似文献

Monodisperse spherical hollow nanoparticles of mesoporous silica featuring mesopores with a radial orientation in the silica shell were synthesized via a dual-templating method. Specifically designed polystyrene latexes with anionic or cationic surface charges acted as the core templates, while cetyltrimethylammonium bromide served as a co-template to structure the mesopore formation during tetraethoxysilane hydrolysis/condensation. The particles were well-separated and presented homogeneous mesoporous silica shells. Average particle diameters were less than 200 nm, and the particles displayed high values of specific surface area and pore volume. The shell thickness and the hollow core diameter could be tuned independently while the radial pore structure was preserved. A detailed analysis of the nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms proved that the central cavity was completely isolated from the external medium, that is, only accessible through the radial mesopores of the shell. Consequently, our particles gather the advantages of a well-defined structure, straight penetrating channels across the silica shell, and a high accessible porous volume of the central core. These properties make them far better candidates than simple mesoporous particles for any storage and/or controlled release applications.  相似文献

Polyacrylate/silica nanocomposite latex particles were prepared by in situ emulsion polymerization of acrylate monomers initiated by 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride (AIBA) adsorbed by silica nanoparticles. The anchoring of polyacrylate (ACR) onto silica nanoparticles was achieved through the physical absorption and chemical grafting reaction. The elution and HF etching experiments showed that most silica nanoparticles were encapsulated by ACR to form the raspberry-like ACR/silica nanocomposite latex particles. The silica nanoparticles with a greater grafting degree of ACR tended to locate in the bulk of the polymer, and the silica particle with a lower grafting degree would not be combined with polymer latex particles and always remained in water phase. The formation of the final ACR/silica nanocomposite latex particles included the anchoring of ACR onto silica primary particles, aggregation of silica primary particles to form the silica-containing latex particles, and the growth of latex particles.  相似文献

Mesopore-free hollow silica particles with a spherical shape, smooth surface, and controllable diameter (from 80 to 300 nm) and shell thickness (from 2 to 25 nm) were successfully prepared using an additive-free synthesis method. Different from other hollow particle developments, a mesopore-free shell was produced because of the absence of additive. Although common reports pointed out the importance of the additional additive in pasting and growing silica on the surface of a template, here we preferred to exploit the effect of the template charge in gaining the silica coating process. To form the silica, basic amino acid (i.e., lysine) was used as a catalyst to replace ammonia or hydrazine, which is harmless and able to control the silica growth and produce hollow particles with smooth surfaces. Control of the particle diameter was drastically achieved by altering the size of the template. The flexibility of the process in controlling the shell thickness was predominantly attained by varying the compositions of the reactants (i.e., silica source and catalyst). The present mesopore-free hollow particles could be efficiently used for various applications, especially for thermal insulator and optical devices because of their tendency not to adsorb large molecules, as confirmed by adsorption analysis.  相似文献

Manipulation of colloidal systems via optical trapping techniques requires a refractive index mismatch between particles and solvent which leads to strong interparticle van der Waals interactions. Investigation of the behavior of systems without such strong attractive interactions, however, requires the uncoupling of particle refractive index and particle-particle interactions. To accomplish this, the synthesis of core-shell titania/silica particles has been performed. By index matching a silica shell on a titania core using a mixture of toluene and propanol, the van der Waals interactions between particles can be minimized. Due to the mismatch of the refractive index between the solvent and titania core, however, a strong trapping force can be generated, making optical manipulation feasible. In order to confirm that the silica shell was indeed matched, pure silica particles were synthesized by the method of St?ber (1968) and added to the core-shell system. In these mixed systems of core-shell and pure silica particles in silica-index-matching solvents, only the core-shell particles were trappable. Copyright 2000 Academic Press.  相似文献

The silica–silver core–shell particles were synthesized by simple one pot chemical method and were employed on the cotton fabric as an antibacterial agent. Extremely small (1–2 nm) silver nanoparticles were attached on silica core particles of average 270 nm size. The optimum density of the nano silver particles was found which was sufficient to show good antibacterial activity as well as the suppression in their surface plasmon resonance responsible for the colour of the core–shell particle for antibacterial textile application. The change in the density and size of the particles in the shell were monitored and confirmed by direct evidence of their transmission electron micrographs and by studying surface plasmon resonance characteristics. The colony counting method of antibacterial activity testing showed excellent results and even the least silver containing core–shell particles showed 100% activity against bacterial concentration of 104 colony counting units (cfu). The bonding between core–shell particles and cotton fabric was examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The antibacterial activity test confirmed the firm attachment of core–shell particles to the cotton fabric as a result 10 times washed sample was as good antibacterial as that of unwashed sample. The bacterial growth was inhibited on and beneath the coated fabric, at the same time no zone of inhibition which occurs due to the migration of silver ions into the medium was observed indicating immobilization of silver nanoparticles on silica and core–shell particles on fabric by strong bonding.  相似文献

Monodispersed silica particles up to ca. 1.2 μm in diameter were prepared by hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The particle size was increased with an increase of SDS added. The geometrical standard deviation of the particles was decreased with an increase of SDS. In the earlier reaction stage, double spherical particles by the coalescence of the particles were frequently observed when large amounts of SDS were added. Particle size was gradually increased after the coalescence occurred and spherical particles were finally obtained. The results of Nielsen’s chronomal analysis suggest that the polynuclear layer growth took place after the coalescence of the particles in the presence of larger amount of SDS.  相似文献

Many types of colloidal particles possess a core-shell morphology. In this Article, we show that, if the core and shell densities differ, this morphology leads to an inherent density distribution for particles of finite polydispersity. If the shell is denser than the core, this density distribution implies an artificial narrowing of the particle size distribution as determined by disk centrifuge photosedimentometry (DCP). In the specific case of polystyrene/silica nanocomposite particles, which consist of a polystyrene core coated with a monolayer shell of silica nanoparticles, we demonstrate that the particle density distribution can be determined by analytical ultracentrifugation and introduce a mathematical method to account for this density distribution by reanalyzing the raw DCP data. Using the mean silica packing density calculated from small-angle X-ray scattering, the real particle density can be calculated for each data point. The corrected DCP particle size distribution is both broader and more consistent with particle size distributions reported for the same polystyrene/silica nanocomposite sample using other sizing techniques, such as electron microscopy, laser light diffraction, and dynamic light scattering. Artifactual narrowing of the size distribution is also likely to occur for many other polymer/inorganic nanocomposite particles comprising a low-density core of variable dimensions coated with a high-density shell of constant thickness, or for core-shell latexes where the shell is continuous rather than particulate in nature.

Poly(1-methylpyrrol-2-ylsquaraine) precipitates from reaction solution as uniformly spherical particles with a diameter of 1.3 microm. Upon heating, the particles reduce in diameter until extinction at approximately 630 degrees C. Treatment of the particles with 9:1 tetraethoxysilane:ethanol solution, and subsequent hydrolysis in dilute acid, results in a polymer core-silica shell structure. Removal of the core, upon heating to 660 degrees C, results in an amorphous silica shell with a diameter half that of the initial template sphere. It has been found that the silica shells produced by this method are able to encapsulate organic dyes upon soaking of the shells in chloroform solutions of the dyes, and further washings with fresh chloroform did not remove the dyes. The production of crystalline titanium dioxide shells was also achieved through the use of the polysquaraine particles as a spherical template.  相似文献

A two-population model based on standard small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) equations is verified for the analysis of core-shell structures comprising spherical colloidal particles with particulate shells. First, Monte Carlo simulations of core-shell structures are performed to demonstrate the applicability of the model. Three possible shell packings are considered: ordered silica shells due to either charge-dependent repulsive or size-dependent Lennard-Jones interactions or randomly arranged silica particles. In most cases, the two-population model produces an excellent fit to calculated SAXS patterns for the simulated core-shell structures, together with a good correlation between the fitting parameters and structural parameters used for the simulation. The limits of application are discussed, and then, this two-population model is applied to the analysis of well-defined core-shell vinyl polymer/silica nanocomposite particles, where the shell comprises a monolayer of spherical silica nanoparticles. Comprehensive SAXS analysis of a series of poly(styrene-co-n-butyl acrylate)/silica colloidal nanocomposite particles (prepared by the in situ emulsion copolymerization of styrene and n-butyl acrylate in the presence of a glycerol-functionalized silica sol) allows the overall core-shell particle diameter, the copolymer latex core diameter and polydispersity, the mean silica shell thickness, the mean silica diameter and polydispersity, the volume fractions of the two components, the silica packing density, and the silica shell structure to be obtained. These experimental SAXS results are consistent with electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimetry, helium pycnometry, and BET surface area studies. The high electron density contrast between the (co)polymer and the silica components, together with the relatively low polydispersity of these core-shell nanocomposite particles, makes SAXS ideally suited for the characterization of this system. Moreover, these results can be generalized for other types of core-shell colloidal particles.  相似文献

The organic/inorganic hybrid particles PSt/P(St-CPEM)(θ)-g-PDMAEMA/SiO(2) were prepared by catalytic hydrolysis and subsequent polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane in the poly[2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (PDMAEMA) layers grafted on the PSt/P(St-CPEM)(θ) core/shell heterocoagulates. The micron-sized PSt core and the submicron-sized P(St-CPEM) shell particles bearing ATRP initiating groups were synthesized by dispersion polymerization of styrene (St) and emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of St with 2-chloropropionyloxyethyl methacrylate (CPEM), respectively. The raspberry-shaped PSt/P(St-CPEM)(θ) heterocoagulates with a controlled surface coverage (θ=0.51, 0.81) were prepared by hydrophobic coagulation between the core and the shell particles in an aqueous NaCl solution near the T(g) of P(St-CPEM). Surface modification of heterocoagulates was carried out by ATRP of DMAEMA from the shell particles adsorbed on the core particles. Silica deposition was performed by simply adding tetraethoxysilane to a water/methanol dispersion of PSt/P(St-CPEM)(θ)-g-PDMAEMA. The SEM and TGA revealed that the resulting PSt/P(St-CPEM)(θ)-g-PDMAEMA/SiO(2) composites maintain a raspberry-like morphology after deposition of silica onto the PDMAEMA layer grafted on heterocoagulates. The micron-sized, raspberry-shaped or the submicron-sized, hole-structured silica hollow particles were obtained selectively by thermal decomposition of the PSt/P(St-CPEM)(θ)-g-PDMAEMA/SiO(2). The oriented particle array was fabricated by dropping anisotropically perforated silica particles onto a glass substrate settled at the bottom of a bottle filled with chloroform.  相似文献

The composite particles with core/shell structure resulting from the combination of silica seed and hydrophobic copolymer (dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA), gamma-methacryloxypropyltriisopropoxidesilane (MAPTIPS), methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate) were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. The amount of the silica seeds, concentration of reactive surfactant, as well as the addition of DFMA and MAPTIPS, have strong influences on the morphology of composite particles. It has been shown that it would be possible to produce stable organic/inorganic composite particles with inhomogeneous core/shell structure encapsulated by hydrophobic fluorinated acrylate even though using unmodified silica particles and admixture of anionic and nonionic surfactants. However, there was an obvious difference on the morphologies of core-shell structure whether the DFMA and MAPTIPS were added or not. It was concluded that two kinds of polymerization approaches might coexist in the presence of DFMA and MAPTIPS for raw silica. One clear advantage of this process is that there is only one silica bead for each composite particle. This kind of stable core-shell structural hybrid latex is useful for preparing high performance hydrophobic coating.  相似文献

We report the synthesis of well-dispersed core-shell Au@SiO(2) nanoparticles with minimal extraneous silica particle growth. Agglomeration was suppressed through consecutive exchange of the stabilizing ligands on the gold cores from citrate to L-arginine and finally (3-mercaptopropyl)triethoxysilane. The result was a vitreophilic, stable gold suspension that could be coated with silica in a biphasic mixture through controlled hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane under L-arginine catalysis. Unwanted condensation of silica particles without gold cores was limited by slowing the transfer across the liquid-liquid interface and reducing the concentration of the L-arginine catalyst. In-situ dynamic light scattering and optical transmission spectroscopy revealed the growth and dispersion states during synthesis. The resulting core-shell particles were characterized via dynamic light scattering, optical spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. Their cores were typically 19 nm in diameter, with a narrow size distribution, and could be coated with a silica shell in multiple steps to yield core-shell particles with diameters up to 40 nm. The approach was sufficiently controllable to allow us to target a shell thickness by choosing appropriate precursor concentrations.  相似文献

The diffusion behavior of core-shell latex particles with a liquid core of hexadecane and a solid polystyrene shell in water solution has been studied using the pulsed field gradient spin-echo (PFG-SE) NMR technique. The apparent diffusion coefficient and the root mean square displacement of oil were strongly dependent on the diffusion time Delta. With increasing diffusion time, the obstructing effect from the particle wall caused a decrease in the apparent oil diffusion coefficient. The root mean square displacement of oil inside the particle core was constant for all diffusion times and was used for the calculation of the particle radius. The volume fraction dependence of the apparent diffusion coefficient was found to be roughly consistent with the hard-sphere model. The diffraction pattern in the echo decay predicted from the q-space formalism for molecules diffusing inside a spherical cavity was almost completely smeared out due to polydispersity and wall relaxation effects. It was observed that 10-20% (w/w) of the particle shell consisted of hexadecane. This fact imparted a slow component to the echo decay, since the exchange time between oil in the shell and oil in the cavity was slow, which further contributed to the smearing out of the diffraction pattern. It was concluded that by using the core-shell concept very good signal-to-noise is obtained in the PFG-SE experiment, thus making possible studies of translational properties of colloidal particles in different environments to an extent that previously has been very difficult to perform.  相似文献
