We consider the motion of a point particle (billiard) in a uniform gravitational field constrained to move in a symmetric wedge-shaped region. The billiard is reflected at the wedge boundary. The phase space of the system naturally divides itself into two regions in which the tangent maps are respectively parabolic and hyperbolic. It is known that the system is integrable for two values of the wedge half-angle 1 and 2 and chaotic for 1<< 2. We study the system at three levels of approximation: first, where the deterministic dynamics is replaced by a random evolution; second, where, in addition, the tangent map in each region is, replaced by its average; and third, where the tangent map is replaced by a single global average. We show that at all three levels the Lyapunov exponent exhibits power law behavior near 1 and 2 with exponents 1/2 and 1, respectively. We indicate the origin of the exponent 1, which has not been observed in unaccelerated billiards.  相似文献

We prove that for any diophantine rotation angle and a.e. phase the almost Mathieu operator (H()) n = n–1 + n+1 +cos(2(+n)) n has pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions for 15. We also prove the existence of some pure point spectrum for any 5.4.  相似文献

We consider KAM invariant curves for generalizations of the standard map of the form (x, y)=(x+y, y+f(x)), wheref(x) is an odd trigonometric polynomial. We study numerically their analytic properties by a Padé approximant method applied to the function which conjugates the dynamics to a rotation +. In the complex plane, natural boundaries of different shapes are found. In the complex plane the analyticity region appears to be a strip bounded by a natural boundary, whose width tends linearly to 0 as tends to the critical value.  相似文献

Several recent works have established dynamical localization for Schrödinger operators, starting from control on the localization length of their eigenfunctions, in terms of their centers of localization. We provide an alternative way to obtain dynamical localization, without resorting to such a strong condition on the exponential decay of the eigenfunctions. Furthermore, we illustrate our purpose with the almost Mathieu operator, H , , =–+ cos(2(+x)), 15 and with good Diophantine properties. More precisely, for almost all , for all q>0, and for all functions 2( ) of compact support, we show that The proof applies equally well to discrete and continuous random Hamiltonians. In all cases, it uses as input a repulsion principle of singular boxes, supplied in the random case by the multi-scale analysis.  相似文献

It is shown that the flip automorphismUU *,VV * of the irrational rotation algebra A is an inductive limit automorphism. Here, the algebra A is generated by unitariesU, V satisfyingVU=e2i UV, where is an irrational number. Recently, Elliott and Evans proved that A can be approximated by unital subalgebras isomorphic to a direct sum of two matrix algebras over , the algebra of continuous functions on the unit circle. This is the central result which they used to obtain their structure theorem on A; namely, that A is the inductive limit of an increasing sequence of subalgebras each isomorphic to a direct sum of two matrix algebras over . In their proof, they devised a subtle construction of two complementary towers of projections. In the present paper it is shown that the two towers can be chosen so that each summand of their approximating basic building blocks is invariant under the flip automorphism and, in particular, that the unit projection of the first summand is unitarily equivalent to the complement of the unit of the second by a unitary which is fixed under the flip. Also, an explicit computation of the flip on the approximating basic building blocks of A is given. Further, combining this result along with others, including a theorem of Su and a spectral argument of Bratteli, Evans, and Kishimoto, a two-tower proof is obtained of the fact established by Bratteli and Kishimoto that the fixed point subalgebra B (under the flip) is approximately finite dimensional. Also used here is the fact that B has the cancellation property and is gifted with four basic unbounded trace functionals. The question is raised whether other finite order automorphisms of A (arising from a matrix in SL(2,)) are inductive limit automorphisms - or evenalmost inductive limit automorphisms in the sense of Voiculescu.Research partly supported by NSERC grant OGP0169928  相似文献

We make use of natural induction to propose, following John Ju Sakurai, a generalization of Bell's inequality for two spin s=n/2(n=1,2,...) particle systems in a singlet state. We have found that for any finite integer or half-integer spin Bell's inequality is violated when the terms in the inequality are calculated from a quantum mechanical point of view. In the final expression for this inequality the two members therein are expressed in terms of a single parameter . Violation occurs for in some interval of the form (,/2) where parameter becomes closer and closer to /2, as the spin grows, that is, the greater the spin number the size of the interval in which violation occurs diminishes to zero. Bell's inequality is a relationship among observables that discriminates between Einstein's locality principle and the non-local point of view of orthodox quantum mechanics. So our conclusion may also be stated by saying that for large spin numbers the non-local and local points of view agree.  相似文献

For the zero-temperature Glauber dynamics of theq-state Potts model, the fractionr(q, t) of spins which never flip up to timet decays like a power lawr(q, t)t –(q) when the initial condition is random. By mapping the problem onto an exactly soluble one-species coagulation model (A+AA) or alternatively by transforming the problem into a free-fermion model, we obtain the exact expression of (q) for all values ofq. Under routine independence assumptions, one may then calculate a formula for the spectrum ofn(t), S n(), in terms of the probability density ofs, ps(). If any probability density ps() having the property ps() I for small is substituted into this formula, the calculated Sn() is such that Sn() 1 for small . However, this is not a spectrum of a well-defined random process; here, it is termed alimit spectrum. If a probability density having the property ps() for small , where > 0, is substituted into the formula instead, a spectrum is calculated which is indeed the spectrum of a well-defined random process. Also, if the latter ps is suitably close to the former ps, then the spectrum in the second case approximates, to an arbitrary, degree of accuracy, the limit spectrum. It is shown how one may thereby have 1/f noise with low-frequency turnover, and also strict 1/f 1– noise (the latter spectrum being integrable for > 0). Suitable examples are given. It is expected that quantum effects endow spacetime with stochastic properties near the Planck scale as exemplified by random fluctuations of the metric, usually referred to as spacetime foam or geometrodynamics. In this paper, a methodology is presented for incorporating Planck scale stochastic effects and corrections into general relativity within the ADM formalism, by coupling the Riemann 3-metric to white noise. The ADM—Cauchy evolution of a Riemann 3-metric h ij (t) induced on spacelike hypersurface C(t) can be interpreted within pure general relativity as a smooth geodesic flow in superspace, whose points consist of equivalence classes of 3-metrics. Coupling white noise to h ij gives Langevin stochastic differential equations for the Cauchy evolution of h ij, which is now a Brownian motion or diffusion in superspace. A fluctuation hij away from h ij is considered to be related to h ij by elements of the diffeomorphism group diff(C). Hydrodynamical Fokker—Planck continuity equations are formulated describing the stochastic Cauchy evolution of h ij as a probability flow. The Cauchy invariant or equilibrium solution gives a stationary probability distribution of fluctuations peaked around the deterministic metric. By selecting a physically viable ansatz for the scale dependent diffusion coefficient, one reproduces the Wheeler uncertainty relation for the metric fluctuations of quantum geometrodynamics. Treating h ij as a random variable, a non-linear Raychaudhuri—Langevin equation is derived describing the geometro-hydrodynamics of a congruence of fluid or dust matter propagating on the stochastic spacetime. For an initially converging congruence >0 at s the singularity =– at future proper time s=3/||$, which is expected in general relativity, is now smeared out near the Planck scale. Proper time s can be extended indefinitely (s) so that intrinsic metric fluctuations can restore geodesic completeness although the geodesics remain trapped for all time: although a singularity can be removed the collapsing matter still creates a black hole. A Fokker—Planck formulation also gives zero probability that – for s. Essentially, the short distance stochastic corrections to the deterministic equations of general relativity can remove pathologies such as singularities, conjugate points and geodesic incompleteness.  相似文献

We investigate the statistical and dimensional properties of uniform star polymers attached by the branching vertex of degreef in a wedge geometry in three dimensions and described by the wedge angles and. We show that the growth constant is equal to f , where is the self-avoiding walk limit. Thef and (, ) dependences of the corresponding critical exponent f (, ) are studied using Monte Carlo techniques. In the casef=1, our results are compared with existing predictions obtained from series expansion and renormalization group methods. We have also estimated the amplitudes for the mean square radius of gyration and the mean square end-to-end branch length. Our results for the ratio of the mean square radius of gyration of anf-star to that of a linear polymer of the same degree of polymerization attached in a similar wedge, and the analogous ratio for the mean square end-to-end branch length, are consistent with these ratios being lattice-independent quantities.  相似文献

We prove localization at high disorder or low energy for lattice Schrödinger operators with random potentials whose values at different lattice sites are correlated over large distances. The class of admissible random potentials for our multiscale analysis includes potentials with a stationary Gaussian distribution whose covariance functionC(x,y) decays as |x–y|, where >0 can be arbitrarily small, and potentials whose probability distribution is a completely analytical Gibbs measure. The stochastic processes recently introduced by Grassberger and Cardy are shown to belong to the same universality class as dynamic percolation. To first order in =6–d, whered is the spatial dimensionality, known critical exponents of random percolation are rederived and the new dynamic exponent z=2–1/6+0(2) is calculated by use of the field-theoretic renormalization group method. The relation of the statistics of big clusters (animals) to the Yang-Lee edge singularity in random fields is presented.  相似文献

We study the thermodynamic properties of a simple model for the possible mechanism of attraction between like charged rod-like polyions inside a polyelectrolyte solution. We consider two polyions in parallel planes, with Z charges each, in a solution containing multivalent counterion of valence . The model is solved exactly for Z13 for a general angle between the rods and supposing that n counterions are condensed onto each polyion. The free energy has two minima, one at =0 (parallel rods) and another at =/2 (perpendicular rods). The stability of the parallel and perpendicular configurations is analyzed.  相似文献

The2H(d, )4He differential cross section was measured at deuteron laboratory energies of 20, 24, and 28 MeV between cm=45° and cm=135°. AtE d =28 MeV a complete angular distribution was determined and fitted with Legendre polynomials. The ratioR=d/d (cm=90°)/d/d (cm=135°) was measured for each deuteron energy.  相似文献

It is shown that if the second wall of a channel-cut crystal x-ray monochromator is properly curved, the monochromator is harmonic free for all. Moreover, if the first wall is suitably inclined to the diffracting planes, the position of the exit beam may be kept constant for all. This requires a correction of the position of the monochromator for each by its axial and radial translation.  相似文献

We consider a semi-infinite 3-dimensional Ising system with a rough wall to describe the effect of the roughness r of the substrate on wetting.
