Abstract

Let d be a positive integer, and F be a field of characteristic zero. Suppose that for each positive integer n, I n, is a GL n,(F)- invariant of forms of degree d in x1, …, x n, over F. We call {I n} an additive family of invariants if I p+q (fg) = I p(f).I q(g) whenever f; g are forms of degree d over F in x l, …, x p; …, x q respectively, and where (fg)(x l, …, x p+q) = f(x 1, …, x p,) + g (x p+1, …, x p+q). It is well-known that the family of discriminants of the quadratic forms is additive. We prove that in odd degree d each invariant in an additive family must be a constant. We also give an example in each even degree d of a nontrivial family of invariants of the forms of degree d. The proofs depend on the symbolic method for representing invariants of a form, which we review.  相似文献

Let k and n be positive integers such that kn. Let Sn (F) denote the space of all n×n symmetric matrices over the field F with char F≠2. A subspace L of Sn (F) is said to be a k-subspace if rank Ak for every A?L.

Now suppose that k is even, and write k=2r. We say a k∥-subspace of Sn (F) is decomposable if there exists in Fn a subspace W of dimension n?r such that xtAx=0 for every x?W A?L.

We show here, under some mild assumptions on k n and F, that every k∥-subspace of Sn (F) of sufficiently large dimension must be decomposable. This is an analogue of a result obtained by Atkinson and Lloyd for corresponding subspaces of Fm,n .  相似文献

Given a totally ordered setT containing at leastn+1 elements (say a subset ofR 1), the graph of the functiona:TR n is called a Chebyshev curve (inR n) if the determinant of the matrix (a(t 1),a(t 2), ...,a(t n)) is either positive whenevert 1<t 2<...<t n or negative whenevert 1<t 2<...<t n. For finiteT a characterization of these curves (sequences) has been given by the author. In this paper the result is extended to non-finiteT. The characterization proved here is an improved (reformulated) version of that given by the author for infiniteT.  相似文献

Given a non-empty bounded domainG in n ,n2, letr 0(G) denote the radius of the ballG 0 having center 0 and the same volume asG. The exterior deficiencyd e (G) is defined byd e (G)=r e (G)/r 0(G)–1 wherer e (G) denotes the circumradius ofG. Similarlyd i (G)=1–r i (G)/r 0(G) wherer i (G) is the inradius ofG. Various isoperimetric inequalities for the capacity and the first eigenvalue ofG are shown. The main results are of the form CapG(1+cf(d e (G)))CapG 0 and 1(G)(1+cf(d i (G)))1(G 0),f(t)=t 3 ifn=2,f(t)=t 3/(ln 1/t) ifn=3,f(t)=t (n+3)/2 ifn4 (for convex G and small deficiencies ifn3).  相似文献

Let Tn (F) be the algebra of all n×n upper triangular matrices over an arbitrary field F. We first characterize those rank-one nonincreasing mappings ψ: Tn (F)→Tm (F)n?m such that ψ(In ) is of rank n. We next deduce from this result certain types of singular rank-one r-potent preservers and nonzero r-potent preservers on Tn (F). Characterizations of certain classes of homomorphisms and semi-homomorphisms on Tn (F) are also given.  相似文献

For every positive integer n, consider the linear operator U n on polynomials of degree at most d with integer coefficients defined as follows: if we write ${\frac{h(t)}{(1 - t)^{d + 1}}=\sum_{m \geq 0} g(m) \, t^{m}}For every positive integer n, consider the linear operator U n on polynomials of degree at most d with integer coefficients defined as follows: if we write \frach(t)(1 - t)d + 1=?m 3 0 g(m)  tm{\frac{h(t)}{(1 - t)^{d + 1}}=\sum_{m \geq 0} g(m) \, t^{m}} , for some polynomial g(m) with rational coefficients, then \fracUnh(t)(1- t)d+1 = ?m 3 0g(nm)  tm{\frac{{\rm{U}}_{n}h(t)}{(1- t)^{d+1}} = \sum_{m \geq 0}g(nm) \, t^{m}} . We show that there exists a positive integer n d , depending only on d, such that if h(t) is a polynomial of degree at most d with nonnegative integer coefficients and h(0) = 1, then for nn d , U n h(t) has simple, real, negative roots and positive, strictly log concave and strictly unimodal coefficients. Applications are given to Ehrhart δ-polynomials and unimodular triangulations of dilations of lattice polytopes, as well as Hilbert series of Veronese subrings of Cohen–Macauley graded rings.  相似文献

The goal of this paper is to establish a connection between two classical models of random graphs: the random graph G(n,p) and the random regular graph Gd(n). This connection appears to be very useful in deriving properties of one model from the other and explains why many graph invariants are universal. In particular, one obtains one-line proofs of several highly non-trivial and recent results on Gd(n).  相似文献

Let denote the set of continuous n×n matrices on an interval . We say that is a nontrivial k-involution if where ζ=e-2πi/k, d0+d1++dk-1=n, and with . We say that is R-symmetric if R(t)A(t)R-1(t)=A(t), , and we show that if A is R-symmetric then solving x=A(t)x or x=A(t)x+f(t) reduces to solving k independent d×d systems, 0k-1. We consider the asymptotic behavior of the solutions in the case where . Finally, we sketch analogous results for linear systems of difference equations.  相似文献

Given positive integers n and p, and a complex finite dimensional vector space V, we let Sn,p(V) denote the set of all functions from V×V×?×V-(n+p copies) to C that are linear and symmetric in the first n positions, and conjugate linear symmetric in the last p positions. Letting κ=min{n,p} we introduce twisted inner products, [·,·]s,t,1?s,t?κ, on Sn,p(V), and prove the monotonicity condition [F,F]s,t?[F,F]u,v is satisfied when s?u?κ,t?v?κ, and FSn,p(V). Using the monotonicity condition, and the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality, we obtain as corollaries many known inequalities involving norms of symmetric multilinear functions, which in turn imply known inequalities involving permanents of positive semidefinite Hermitian matrices. New tensor and permanental inequalities are also presented. Applications to partial differential equations are indicated.  相似文献

Let F be a field and let m and n be integers with m,n?3. Let Mn denote the algebra of n×n matrices over F. In this note, we characterize mappings ψ:MnMm that satisfy one of the following conditions:
1.
|F|=2 or |F|>n+1, and ψ(adj(A+αB))=adj(ψ(A)+αψ(B)) for all A,BMn and αF with ψ(In)≠0.
2.
ψ is surjective and ψ(adj(A-B))=adj(ψ(A)-ψ(B)) for every A,BMn.
Here, adjA denotes the classical adjoint of the matrix A, and In is the identity matrix of order n. We give examples showing the indispensability of the assumption ψ(In)≠0 in our results.  相似文献

Let M^n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F0 : M^n→ R^n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t) : M^n× [0, T) → R^n+1 of hypersurfaces Mt^n= F(·,t)(M^n) satisfy an initial value problem dF/dt (·,t) = -H^k(· ,t)v(· ,t), F(· ,0) = F0(· ), where H is the mean curvature and u(·,t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that -Hu = H is the mean curvature vector, and k 〉 0 is a constant. This problem is called H^k-fiow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type Ⅰ and Type Ⅱ. It is proved that for Type Ⅰ singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type Ⅱ singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.  相似文献

We introduce the distribution function Fn(q,t) of a pair of statistics on Catalan words and conjecture Fn(q,t) equals Garsia and Haiman's q,t-Catalan sequence Cn(q,t), which they defined as a sum of rational functions. We show that Fn,s(q,t), defined as the sum of these statistics restricted to Catalan words ending in s ones, satisfies a recurrence relation. As a corollary we are able to verify that Fn(q,t)=Cn(q,t) when t=1/q. We also show the partial symmetry relation Fn(q,1)=Fn(1,q). By modifying a proof of Haiman of a q-Lagrange inversion formula based on results of Garsia and Gessel, we obtain a q-analogue of the general Lagrange inversion formula which involves Catalan words grouped according to the number of ones at the end of the word.  相似文献

Let {Xn} be a strictly stationary φ-mixing process with Σj=1 φ1/2(j) < ∞. It is shown in the paper that if X1 is uniformly distributed on the unit interval, then, for any t [0, 1], |Fn−1(t) − t + Fn(t) − t| = O(n−3/4(log log n)3/4) a.s. and sup0≤t≤1 |Fn−1(t) − t + Fn(t) − t| = (O(n−3/4(log n)1/2(log log n)1/4) a.s., where Fn and Fn−1(t) denote the sample distribution function and tth sample quantile, respectively. In case {Xn} is strong mixing with exponentially decaying mixing coefficients, it is shown that, for any t [0, 1], |Fn−1(t) − t + Fn(t) − t| = O(n−3/4(log n)1/2(log log n)3/4) a.s. and sup0≤t≤1 |Fn−1(t) − t + Fn(t) − t| = O(n−3/4(log n)(log log n)1/4) a.s. The results are further extended to general distributions, including some nonregular cases, when the underlying distribution function is not differentiable. The results for φ-mixing processes give the sharpest possible orders in view of the corresponding results of Kiefer for independent random variables.  相似文献

In this paper we study some basic properties of multiresolution analysis of multiplicityd in several variables and discuss some examples related to the spaces of cardinal splines with respect to the unidiagonal or the crisscross partition of the plane. Furthermore, in analogy with [8], we show that if the scaling functions are compactly supported, then it is possible to find compactly supported mother wavelets l ,l=1,...,2 n dd, in such a way that the family {2 jn/2 l (2 j xv)} is a semiorthogonal basis ofL 2 ( n ).  相似文献

LetF be a global field,n a positive integer not divisible by the characteristic ofF. Then there exists a finite extensionE ofF whose class group has a cyclic direct summand of ordern. This theorem, in a slightly stronger form, is applied to determine completely, on the basis of the work of Fein and Schacher, the structure of the Brauer group Br(F()) of the rational function fieldF(t). As a consequence of this, an additional theorem of the above authors, together with a note at the end of the paper, imply that Br(F(t)) ≊ Br(F(t 1, ···,t n)), wheret 1, ···,t n are algebraically independent overF.  相似文献

Abstract

Let  be a simple classical Lie algebra over a field F of characteristic p > 7. We show that > d () = 2, where d() is the number of generators of . Let G be a profinite group. We say that G has lower rankl, if there are {G α} open subgroups which from a base for the topology at the identity and each G α is generated (topologically) by no more than l elements. There is a standard way to associate a Lie algebra L(G) to a finitely generated (filtered) pro-p group G. Suppose L(G) ?  ? tF p [t], where  is a simple Lie algebra over F p , the field of p elements. We show that the lower rank of G is ≤ d () + 1. We also show that if  is simple classical of rank r and p > 7 or p 2r 2 ? r, then the lower rank is actually 2.  相似文献

Let D be an integral domain. A saturated multiplicative subset S of D is an almost splitting set if, for each 0≠dD, there exists a positive integer n=n(d) such that dn=st for some sS and tD which is v-coprime to each element of S. We show that every upper to zero in D[X] contains a primary element if and only if D?{0} is an almost splitting set in D[X], if and only if D is a UMT-domain and Cl(D[X]) is torsion. We also prove that D[X] is an almost GCD-domain if and only if D is an almost GCD-domain and Cl(D[X]) is torsion. Using this result, we construct an integral domain D such that Cl(D) is torsion, but Cl(D[X]) is not torsion.  相似文献
