ON BAND IRREDUCIBLE OPERATORS ON BANACH LATTICES

Abstract

In this note we prove an extension of B. de Pagter's theorem (positive, compact, irreducible operators on Banach lattices are not quasi-nilpotent) for positive, band irreducible operators on Banach lattices satisfying some additional conditions.     

REAL AND COMPLEX OPERATOR IDEALS

Abstract

The powerful concept of an operator ideal on the class of all Banach spaces makes sense in the real and in the complex case. In both settings we may, for example, consider compact, nuclear, or 2-summing operators, where the definitions are adapted to each other in a natural way. This paper deals with the question whether or not that fact is based on a general philosophy. Does there exists a one-to-one correspondence between “real properties” and “complex properties” defining an operator ideal? In other words, does there exist for every real operator ideal a uniquely determined corresponding complex ideal and vice versa?

Unfortunately, we are not abel to give a final answer. Nevertheless, some preliminary results are obtained. In particular, we construct for every real operator ideal a corresponding complex operator ideal and for every complex operator ideal a corresponding real one. However, we conjecture that there exists a complex operator ideal which can not be obtained from a real one by this construction.

The following approach is based on the observation that every complex Banach space can be viewed as a real Banach space with an isometry acting on it like the scalar multiplication by the imaginary unit i.     

A CHARACTERIZATION OF COMPLEX LATTICE HOMOMORPHISMS ON BANACH LATTICE ALGEBRAS

Abstract

In this paper we present a characterization of complex lattice homomorphisms on Banach lattice algebras.     

Summability and estimates for polynomials and multilinear mappings

In this paper we extend and generalize several known estimates for homogeneous polynomials and multilinear mappings on Banach spaces. Applying the theory of absolutely summing nonlinear mappings, we prove that estimates which are known for mappings on ?_p spaces in fact hold true for mappings on arbitrary Banach spaces.     

Commutatively ordered Banach algebras

Abstract

Spectral theory in ordered Banach algebras (OBAs) has been investigated and several authors have made contributions. However, the results are not applicable to non-commutative C^*-algebras, since a non-commutative C^*-algebra is not an OBA. In this paper we introduce a more general structure, called a commutatively ordered Banach algebra (COBA), which includes the class of OBAs. Every C^* - algebra is a COBA. We will give the basic properties of COBAs and show how known results in OBAs can be generalized to the COBA setting. We will then discuss two spectral problems regarding COBA elements. The results obtained, of course, hold true in an OBA as well. These results extend the theory of COBAs and OBAs.     

Elements of the Theory of Linear Volterra Operators in Banach Spaces

The new definition of Volterra operator introduced in [5] allows specification of the classical theory of linear equations in Banach spaces to equations with such operators. Here we specially address relations between properties of the given linear equation with Volterra operator and properties of its conjugate. As well we treat the theory of Noetherian and Fredholm equations.     

A NOTE ON MAJORIZING AND CONE ABSOLUTELY SUMMING OPERATORS IN BANACH LATTICES

Abstract

Operators T which are both majorizing and cone absolutely summing on a Banach lattice E are investigated. Compactness and nuclearity of such operators are discussed and it is shown that a trace can be defined for operators belonging to a large class of these operators. Special results are derived in the case where E is a Banach function space and T a kernel operator. Finally we derive strongly measurable representations for a certain class of cone absolutely summing operators thereby clarifying work done by Dinculeanu and J.J. Uhl.     

SOME ASPECTS OF THE THEORY OF SYMMETRIC OPERATOR SPACES

Abstract

We discuss several aspects of the theory of symmetric Banach spaces of measurable operators, including their construction and certain topological and geometric properties. Particular emphasis is given to the role played by rearrangement inequalities.     

Vector-valued Modulation Spaces and Localization Operators with Operator-valued Symbols

We study the short-time Fourier transformation, modulation spaces, Gabor representations and time-frequency localization operators, for functions and tempered distributions that have as range space a Banach or a Hilbert space. In the Banach space case the theory of modulation spaces contains some modifications of the scalar-valued theory, depending on the Banach space. In the Hilbert space case the modulation spaces have properties similar to the scalar-valued case and the Gabor frame theory essentially works. For localization operators in this context symbols are operator-valued. We generalize two results from the scalar-valued theory on continuity on certain modulation spaces when the symbol belongs to an L^p,q space and M^∞, respectively. The first result is true for any Banach space as range space, and the second result is true for any Hilbert space as range space.     

On the class of weak almost limited operators

Abstract

We introduce and study the class of weak almost limited operators. We establish a characterization of pairs of Banach lattices E, F for which every positive weak almost limited operator T : E→F is almost limited (resp. almost Dunford- Pettis). As consequences, we will give some interesting results.

Abstract

Using the notion of a spectral set introduced by von-Neumann, we give some characterizations of C⁺ -algebras. Two conditions, each of which is necessary and sufficient for a Banach algebra to be uniform, are also obtained.     

On the Hyers–Ulam stabilities of functional equations on ‐Banach spaces

The purpose of this article is to generalize the theory of stability of functional equations to the case of n‐Banach spaces. In this article, we prove the generalized Hyers–Ulam stabilities of the Cauchy functional equations, Jensen functional equations and quadratic functional equations on n‐Banach spaces.     

ON THE VITALI-HAHN-SAKS-NIKODYM THEOREM

Abstract

The classical Vitali-Hahn-Saks-Nikodym Theorem [5, Thm. I.4.8] gives a limit criterion for when a sequence of strongly additive vector measures on a σ-field of sets having their range in a Banach space can be expected to be uniformly strongly additive. In [16, Cor. 8], Saeki proved that the limit condition on the sequence of vector measures could be substantially weakened as long as the Banach space in play is “good enough”. Saeki's result was based upon his work on a class of set functions too large to have Rosenthal's Lemma at his disposal. In Section 2, we prove Saeki's result with Rosenthal's Lemma at the basis of our work and then augment our characterization of Banach spaces enjoying Saeki's result in [1] with another natural equivalent condition. In Section 3 we extend Saeki's result to Boolean algebras having the Subsequential Interpolation property.     

ON THE GROWTH ORDER OF Co-SEMIGROUPS, I

In this paper, by using the theory of semigroup and spectrum, a computation formula on the growth order of one class of Co-semigroups in Banach space is proved.     

r-ASYMPTOTICALLY QUASI-FINITE RANK OPERATORS AND THE SPECTRUM OF MEASURES

Abstract

The r-asymptotically quasi finite rank operators were introduced in [10]. For regular operators on Banach lattices, these operators are the order theoretic analogue of Riesz operators on Banach spaces. We establish their basic properties and apply these in the spectral analysis of convolution operators.     

Spectral theory of group representations and their nonstandard hull

We construct the nonstandard hull of a not necessarily bounded strongly continuous representationU of the locally compact semigroupS on a Banach spaceE. Then we apply our results to the theory of the spectrum σ (U) ofU, mainly in cases whereS is an abelian group, e.g.S=R. First of all we obtain generalizations to the unbounded case of results known for the bounded one. Secondly we introduce the notion of the Riesz part R σ(U) of σ(U) and characterize those representations satisfying σ(U)=R σ(U). We illustrate the theory developed so far by applications to representations on Banach lattices. Dedicated to Prof. Dr. H. H. Schaefer on the occasion of his 60th birthday     

SOME SPECTRAL PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLIERS ON SEMI-PRIME BANACH ALGEBRAS

Abstract

We extend to arbitrary semi-prime Banach algebras some results of spectral theory and Fredholm theory obtained in [1] and [2] for multipliers defined in commutative semi-simple Banach algebras.     

Positive one-parameter semigroups on ordered banach spaces

In this review we describe the basic structure of positive continuous one-parameter semigroups acting on ordered Banach spaces. The review is in two parts.First we discuss the general structure of ordered Banach spaces and their ordered duals. We examine normality and generation properties of the cones of positive elements with particular emphasis on monotone properties of the norm. The special cases of Banach lattices, order-unit spaces, and base-norm spaces, are also examined.Second we develop the theory of positive strongly continuous semigroups on ordered Banach spaces, and positive weak^*-continuous semigroups on the dual spaces. Initially we derive analogues of the Feller-Miyadera-Phillips and Hille-Yosida theorems on generation of positive semigroups. Subsequently we analyse strict positivity, irreducibility, and spectral properties, in parallel with the Perron-Frobenius theory of positive matrices.     

Vector-valued Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory for semigroups

We develop a generalized Littlewood-Paley theory for semigroups acting on L^p-spaces of functions with values in uniformly convex or smooth Banach spaces. We characterize, in the vector-valued setting, the validity of the one-sided inequalities concerning the generalized Littlewood-Paley-Stein g-function associated with a subordinated Poisson symmetric diffusion semigroup by the martingale cotype and type properties of the underlying Banach space. We show that in the case of the usual Poisson semigroup and the Poisson semigroup subordinated to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup on Rⁿ, this general theory becomes more satisfactory (and easier to be handled) in virtue of the theory of vector-valued Calderón-Zygmund singular integral operators.
