An empirical correction to density functional theory (DFT) has been developed in this study. The approach, called correlation corrected atomization–dispersion (CCAZD), involves short- and long-range terms. Short-range correction consists of bond (1,2-) and angle (1,3-) interactions, which remedies the deficiency of DFT in describing the proto-branching stabilization effects. Long-range correction includes a Buckingham potential function aiming to account for the dispersion interactions. The empirical corrections of DFT were parameterized to reproduce reported ΔH f values of the training set containing alkane, alcohol and ether molecules. The ΔH f of the training set molecules predicted by the CCAZD method combined with two different DFT methods, B3LYP and MPWB1K, with a 6-31G* basis set agreed well with the experimental data. For 106 alkane, alcohol and ether compounds, the average absolute deviations (AADs) in ΔH f were 0.45 and 0.51 kcal/mol for B3LYP- and MPWB1K-CCAZD, respectively. Calculations of isomerization energies, rotational barriers and conformational energies further validated the CCAZD approach. The isomerization energies improved significantly with the CCAZD treatment. The AADs for 22 energies of isomerization reactions were decreased from 3.55 and 2.44 to 0.55 and 0.82 kcal/mol for B3LYP and MPWB1K, respectively. This study also provided predictions of MM4, G3, CBS-QB3 and B2PLYP-D for comparison. The final test of the CCAZD approach on the calculation of the cellobiose analog potential surface also showed promising results. This study demonstrated that DFT calculations with CCAZD empirical corrections achieved very good agreement with reported values for various chemical reactions with a small basis set as 6-31G*.  相似文献

It is shown, by calculations in He and Ne with HF densities, that the improvement obtained when gradient corrections are added to the local approximation to the kinetic energy, arises from a detailed improvement in the kinetic energy density.  相似文献

The correlation energy functional Ec of the Hartree-Fock density is investigated. It was previously established that Ec produces the exact ground-state energy when added to the Hartree-Fock energy. Except when certain degeneracies occur, it is here shown that Ec is bounded from below when the coordinates of the Hartree-Fock density are scaled uniformly by λ, as λ → ∞. Consequently, approximations to Ec should display this bounded property, which is a second-order perturbation energy. It is also shown that a corresponding result applies to that correlation energy functional, Ëc, which is to be added to a completed exact exchange-only (in the OPM sense) density functional calculation. Scaling requirements are presented for each order in the perturbation expansion for Ëc. For instance, the second-order term is dimensionless. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Open-shell reduced density matrix functional theory is established by investigating the domain of the exact functional. For spin states that are the ground state, a particularly simple set is found to be the domain. It cannot be generalized to other spin states. A number of conditions satisfied by the exact density matrix functional is formulated and tested for approximate functionals. The exact functional does not suffer from fractional spin error, which is the source of the static correlation error in dissociated molecules. We prove that a simple approximation (called the Buijse-Baerends functional, Mu?ller or square root functional) has a non-positive fractional spin error. In the case of the H atom the error is zero. Numerical results for a few atoms are given for approximate density and density matrix functionals as well as a recently developed range-separated combination of both.  相似文献

The adiabatic finite-nuclear-mass-correction (FNMC) to the electronic energies and wave functions of atoms and molecules is formulated for density-functional theory and implemented in the deMon code. The approach is tested for a series of local and gradient corrected density functionals, using MP2 results and diagonal-Born-Oppenheimer corrections from the literature for comparison. In the evaluation of absolute energy corrections of nonorganic molecules the LDA PZ81 functional works surprisingly better than the others. For organic molecules the GGA BLYP functional has the best performance. FNMC with GGA functionals, mainly BLYP, show a good performance in the evaluation of relative corrections, except for nonorganic molecules containing H atoms. The PW86 functional stands out with the best evaluation of the barrier of linearity of H2O and the isotopic dipole moment of HDO. In general, DFT functionals display an accuracy superior than the common belief and because the corrections are based on a change of the electronic kinetic energy they are here ranked in a new appropriate way. The approach is applied to obtain the adiabatic correction for full atomization of alcanes C(n)H(2n+2), n = 4-10. The barrier of 1 mHartree is approached for adiabatic corrections, justifying its insertion into DFT.  相似文献

In the variational 2-particle-reduced-density-matrix (2-RDM) method, the ground-state energy is minimized with respect to the 2-particle reduced density matrix, constrained by N-representability conditions. Consider the N-electron Hamiltonian H(lambda) as a function of the parameter lambda where we recover the Fock Hamiltonian at lambda=0 and we recover the fully correlated Hamiltonian at lambda=1. We explore using the accuracy of perturbation theory at small lambda to correct the 2-RDM variational energies at lambda=1 where the Hamiltonian represents correlated atoms and molecules. A key assumption in the correction is that the 2-RDM method will capture a fairly constant percentage of the correlation energy for lambda in (0,1] because the nonperturbative 2-RDM approach depends more significantly upon the nature rather than the strength of the two-body Hamiltonian interaction. For a variety of molecules we observe that this correction improves the 2-RDM energies in the equilibrium bonding region, while the 2-RDM energies at stretched or nearly dissociated geometries, already highly accurate, are not significantly changed. At equilibrium geometries the corrected 2-RDM energies are similar in accuracy to those from coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD), but at nonequilibrium geometries the 2-RDM energies are often dramatically more accurate as shown in the bond stretching and dissociation data for water and nitrogen.  相似文献

An empirical method to account for van der Waals interactions in practical calculations with the density functional theory (termed DFT-D) is tested for a wide variety of molecular complexes. As in previous schemes, the dispersive energy is described by damped interatomic potentials of the form C6R(-6). The use of pure, gradient-corrected density functionals (BLYP and PBE), together with the resolution-of-the-identity (RI) approximation for the Coulomb operator, allows very efficient computations for large systems. Opposed to previous work, extended AO basis sets of polarized TZV or QZV quality are employed, which reduces the basis set superposition error to a negligible extend. By using a global scaling factor for the atomic C6 coefficients, the functional dependence of the results could be strongly reduced. The "double counting" of correlation effects for strongly bound complexes is found to be insignificant if steep damping functions are employed. The method is applied to a total of 29 complexes of atoms and small molecules (Ne, CH4, NH3, H2O, CH3F, N2, F2, formic acid, ethene, and ethine) with each other and with benzene, to benzene, naphthalene, pyrene, and coronene dimers, the naphthalene trimer, coronene. H2O and four H-bonded and stacked DNA base pairs (AT and GC). In almost all cases, very good agreement with reliable theoretical or experimental results for binding energies and intermolecular distances is obtained. For stacked aromatic systems and the important base pairs, the DFT-D-BLYP model seems to be even superior to standard MP2 treatments that systematically overbind. The good results obtained suggest the approach as a practical tool to describe the properties of many important van der Waals systems in chemistry. Furthermore, the DFT-D data may either be used to calibrate much simpler (e.g., force-field) potentials or the optimized structures can be used as input for more accurate ab initio calculations of the interaction energies.  相似文献

For closed-shell systems, a particular parametrization of coefficients in a configuration interaction (CI) expansion provides a convenient formulation for the search over electronic wave functions constrained by a set of natural orbitals (NOs) and the corresponding occupation numbers that are invoked in every variational construction of the density matrix functional (DMF) V(ee)(Gamma) for the electron--electron repulsion energy. It produces an explicit expression for V(ee) in terms of the Coulomb and exchange integrals over NOs, and an idempotent matrix omega, diagonal elements of which equal the occupation numbers. At the same time, it reveals a very serious bottleneck affecting any rigorous approach to the DMF theory, namely the phase dilemma that stems from the necessity to carry out minimization over a large number of possible combinations of CI coefficient signs. While underscoring its lack of variational nature, a simple approximation for the phase factor products provides a strict derivation for the recently proposed Kollmar-Hess functional.  相似文献

In the previous paper it was shown that in the ground state the diagonal of the spin independent second-order density matrix n can be determined by solving a single auxiliary equation of a two-particle problem. Thus the problem of an arbitrary system with even electrons can be reduced to a two-particle problem. The effective potential of the two-particle equation contains a term v(p) of completely kinetic origin. Virial theorem and hierarchy of equations are derived for v(p) and simple approximations are proposed. A relationship between the effective potential u(p) of the shape function equation and the potential v(p) is established.  相似文献

A recently developed empirical dispersion correction (Grimme et al., J. Chem. Phys. 2010, 132, 154104) to standard density functional theory (DFT‐D3) is implemented in the plane‐wave program package VASP. The DFT‐D3 implementation is compared with an implementation of the earlier DFT‐D2 version (Grimme, J. Comput. Chem. 2004, 25, 1463; Grimme, J. Comput. Chem. 2006, 27, 1787). Summation of empirical pair potential terms is performed over all atom pairs in the reference cell and over atoms in shells of neighboring cells until convergence of the dispersion energy is obtained. For DFT‐D3, the definition of coordination numbers has to be modified with respect to the molecular version to ensure convergence. The effect of three‐center terms as implemented in the original molecular DFT‐D3 version is investigated. The empirical parameters are taken from the original DFT‐D3 version where they had been optimized for a reference set of small molecules. As the coordination numbers of atoms in bulk and surfaces are much larger than in the reference compounds, this effect has to be discussed. The results of test calculations for bulk properties of metals, metal oxides, benzene, and graphite indicate that the original parameters are also suitable for solid‐state systems. In particular, the interlayer distance in bulk graphite and lattice constants of molecular crystals is considerably improved over standard functionals. With the molecular standard parameters (Grimme et al., J. Chem. Phys. 2010, 132, 154104; Grimme, J. Comput. Chem. 2006, 27, 1787) a slight overbinding is observed for ionic oxides where dispersion should not contribute to the bond. For simple adsorbate systems, such as Xe atoms and benzene on Ag(111), the DFT‐D implementations reproduce experimental results with a similar accuracy as more sophisticated approaches based on perturbation theory (Rohlfing and Bredow, Phys. Rev. Lett. 2008, 101, 266106). © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) in the adiabatic formulation exhibits known failures when applied to predicting excitation energies. One of them is the lack of the doubly excited configurations. On the other hand, the time-dependent theory based on a one-electron reduced density matrix functional (time-dependent density matrix functional theory, TD-DMFT) has proven accurate in determining single and double excitations of H(2) molecule if the exact functional is employed in the adiabatic approximation. We propose a new approach for computing excited state energies that relies on functionals of electron density and one-electron reduced density matrix, where the latter is applied in the long-range region of electron-electron interactions. A similar approach has been recently successfully employed in predicting ground state potential energy curves of diatomic molecules even in the dissociation limit, where static correlation effects are dominating. In the paper, a time-dependent functional theory based on the range-separation of electronic interaction operator is rigorously formulated. To turn the approach into a practical scheme the adiabatic approximation is proposed for the short- and long-range components of the coupling matrix present in the linear response equations. In the end, the problem of finding excitation energies is turned into an eigenproblem for a symmetric matrix. Assignment of obtained excitations is discussed and it is shown how to identify double excitations from the analysis of approximate transition density matrix elements. The proposed method used with the short-range local density approximation (srLDA) and the long-range Buijse-Baerends density matrix functional (lrBB) is applied to H(2) molecule (at equilibrium geometry and in the dissociation limit) and to Be atom. The method accounts for double excitations in the investigated systems but, unfortunately, the accuracy of some of them is poor. The quality of the other excitations is in general much better than that offered by TD-DFT-LDA or TD-DMFT-BB approximations if the range-separation parameter is properly chosen. The latter remains an open problem.  相似文献

Zero-point vibrational corrections are computed at the BP86/AE1 level for the set of 50 transition-metal/ligand bonds that have recently been proposed as testing ground for DFT methods, because of the availability of precise experimental gas-phase geometries (Bühl and Kabrede, J Chem Theory Comput 2006, 2, 1282). These corrections are indicated to be transferable to a large extent between various density-functional/basis-set combinations, so that they can be used to estimate zero-point averaged r0g distances from re values optimized at other theoretical levels. Applying this approach to a number of popular DFT levels does not, in general, improve their overall accuracy in terms of mean and standard deviations from experiment. The hybrid variant of the meta-functional TPSS is confirmed as promising choice for computing structures of transition-metal complexes.  相似文献

It is demonstrated that the commonly applied self‐interaction correction (SIC) used in density functional theory does not remove all self‐interaction. We present as an alternative a novel method that, by construction, is totally free from self‐interaction. The method has the correct asymptotic 1/r dependence. We apply the new theory to localized f electrons in praseodymium and compare with the old version of SIC, the local density approximation (LDA) and with an atomic Hartree–Fock calculation. The results show a lowering of the f level, a contraction of the f electron cloud and a lowering of the total energy by 13 eV per 4 f electron compared to LDA. The equilibrium volume of the new SIC method is close to the ones given by LDA and the older SIC method and is in good agreement with experiment. The experimental cohesive energy is in better agreement using the new SIC method, both compared to LDA and another SIC method. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Ewald summation is used to apply semiempirical long-range dispersion corrections (Grimme, J Comput Chem 2006, 27, 1787; 2004, 25, 1463) to periodic systems in density functional theory. Using the parameters determined before for molecules and the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional, structure parameters and binding energies for solid methane, graphite, and vanadium pentoxide are determined in close agreement with observed values. For methane, a lattice constant a of 580 pm and a sublimation energy of 11 kJ mol(-1) are calculated. For the layered solids graphite and vanadia, the interlayer distances are 320 pm and 450 pm, respectively, whereas the graphite interlayer energy is -5.5 kJ mol(-1) per carbon atom and layer. Only when adding the semiempirical dispersion corrections, realistic values are obtained for the energies of adsorption of C(4) alkenes in microporous silica (-66 to -73 kJ mol(-1)) and the adsorption and chemisorption (alkoxide formation) of isobutene on acidic sites in the micropores of zeolite ferrierite (-78 to -94 kJ mol(-1)). As expected, errors due to missing self-interaction correction as in the energy for the proton transfer from the acidic site to the alkene forming a carbenium ion are not affected by the dispersion term. The adsorption and reaction energies are compared with the results from M?ller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory with basis set extrapolation.  相似文献

Time-dependent density matrix functional theory can be formulated in terms of coupled-perturbed response equations, in which a coupling matrix K(omega) features, analogous to the well-known time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) case. An adiabatic approximation is needed to solve these equations, but the adiabatic approximation is much more critical since there is not a good "zero order" as in TDDFT, in which the virtual-occupied Kohn-Sham orbital energy differences serve this purpose. We discuss a simple approximation proposed earlier which uses only results from static calculations, called the static approximation (SA), and show that it is deficient, since it leads to zero response of the natural orbital occupation numbers. This leads to wrong behavior in the omega-->0 limit. An improved adiabatic approximation (AA) is formulated. The two-electron system affords a derivation of exact coupled-perturbed equations for the density matrix response, permitting analytical comparison of the adiabatic approximation with the exact equations. For the two-electron system also, the exact density matrix functional (2-matrix in terms of 1-matrix) is known, enabling testing of the static and adiabatic approximations unobscured by approximations in the functional. The two-electron HeH(+) molecule shows that at the equilibrium distance, SA consistently underestimates the frequency-dependent polarizability alpha(omega), the adiabatic TDDFT overestimates alpha(omega), while AA improves upon SA and, indeed, AA produces the correct alpha(0). For stretched HeH(+), adiabatic density matrix functional theory corrects the too low first excitation energy and overpolarization of adiabatic TDDFT methods and exhibits excellent agreement with high-quality CCSD ("exact") results over a large omega range.  相似文献

A new method for the calculation of the spin density in π radicals is proposed within the McLachlan framework. Compared with previous methods, this new definition exhibits two main features: (i) for odd alternant neutral radicals, the computed spin density pattern is in better agreement with experiment (ii) for even alternant ionic radicals, the spin densities are identical in the cation and the anion, as required by the “ pairing theorem ”.  相似文献

Density functional theory (DFT-D) and semi-empirical (PM3-D) methods having an added empirical dispersion correction have been used to study the binding of a series of small molecules and planar aromatic molecules to single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). For the small molecule set, the PM3-D method gives a mean unsigned error (MUE) in the binding energies of 1.2 kcal mol(-1) when judged against experimental reference data for graphitic carbon. This value is close to the MUE for this method compared to high-level ab initio data for biological complexes. The PM3-D and DFT-D calculations describing the adsorption of the planar organic molecules (benzene, bibenzene, naphthalene, anthracene, TCNQ and DDQ) on the outer-walls of both semi-conducting and metallic CNTs give similar binding energies for benzene and DDQ, but do not display a stronger adsorption on [6,6] compared to [10,0] structures shown by another DFT study.  相似文献

The recently proposed new family of "double-hybrid" density functionals [Grimme, S. J. Chem. Phys. 2006, 124, 34108] replaces a fraction of the semi-local correlation energy by a non-local correlation energy expression that employs the Kohn-Sham orbitals in second-order many-body perturbation theory. These functionals have provided results of high accuracy over a wide range of properties but fail to accurately describe long-range van der Waals interactions. In this work, a distance-dependent scaling factor for the non-local correlation energy is introduced to address this problem, and two new double-hybrid density functionals are proposed. The new functionals are optimized with the finite cc-pVTZ basis on training sets of atomization energies and intermolecular interaction energies. They are compared against (scaled) second-order M?ller-Plesset perturbation theories and popular density functionals including the hybrid-GGA functional B3-LYP and the first double-hybrid functional (B2-PLYP). Tests are performed on an extensive set including reaction energies, barrier heights, weakly interacting complexes, transition-metal systems, molecular geometries, and harmonic vibrational frequencies. Within the cc-pVTZ atomic orbital basis, we have demonstrated the ability to find a parametrization scheme which is simultaneously able to describe thermochemistry and weakly bound systems with a satisfactory degree of accuracy.  相似文献

Some formal requirements for the second-order reduced density matrix are discussed in the context of density matrix functional theory. They serve as a basis for the ad hoc construction of the second-order reduced density matrix in terms of the first-order reduced density matrix and lead to implicit functionals where the occupation numbers of the natural orbitals are obtained as diagonal elements of an idempotent matrix the elements of which represent the variational parameters to be optimized. The numerical results obtained from a first realization of such an implicit density matrix functional give excellent agreement with the results of full configuration interaction calculations for four-electron systems like LiH and Be. Results for H2O taken as an example for a somewhat larger molecule are numerically less satisfactory but still give reasonable occupation numbers of the natural orbitals and indicate the capability of density matrix functional theory to cope with static electron correlation.  相似文献
