Quasivariety Generated by Free Metabelian and 2-Nilpotent Groups

Let qG be a quasivariety generated by a group G and be a non-Abelian quasivariety of groups with a finite lattice of subquasivarieties. Suppose is contained in a quasivariety generated by the following two groups: a free 2-nilpotent group F₂( ₂) of rank 2 and a free metabelian (i.e., with an Abelian commutant) group F₂( ₂) of rank 2. On Ordering the Groups with Nilpotent Commutant

We prove that every group with nilpotent commutant, having an abelian normal subgroup such that the factor by this subgroup is nilpotent, is preorderable if and only if the group is -torsion-free. An example is exhibited of a nonorderable -torsion-free group with two-step nilpotent radical. This example demonstrates that for the variety of groups with nilpotent commutant the absence of -torsion in a group is not a sufficient condition for orderability.

We prove a theorem on possible test rank values for groups of the form . It is shown that test rank of a free polynilpotent group is equal to or , for any and every collection of classes. Moreover, for and .     

Constructive Matrix and Orderable Groups

We study into the relationship between constructivizations of an associative commutative ring K with unity and constructivizations of matrix groups GL _n(K) (general), SL _n(K) (special), and UT _n(K) (unitriangular) over K. It is proved that for n 3, a corresponding group is constructible iff so is K. We also look at constructivizations of ordered groups. It turns out that a torsion-free constructible Abelian group is orderly constructible. It is stated that the unitriangular matrix group UT _n(K) over an orderly constructible commutative associative ring K is itself orderly constructible. A similar statement holds also for finitely generated nilpotent groups, and countable free nilpotent groups.

The Lattice of Quasivarieties of Torsion-Free Metabelian Groups

Assume that a quasivariety of groups contains a non-Abelian free metabelian group and a non-Abelian free nilpotent group of class 2. It is proved that the lattice of quasivarieties contained in is infinite and non-modular.

The quasivariety generated by a torsion-free Abelian-by-finite group

Let L_q(qG) be the quasivariety lattice contained in a quasivariety generated by a group G. Criterion for Invertibility of Endomorphisms and Test Rank of Metabelian Products of Abelian Groups

Let G be a finitely generated torsion-free group, which is a metabelian product of Abelian groups. We establish a criterion for endomorphisms satisfying some extra restriction to be invertible in G. Test sets for IA-endomorphisms of G are described and its test rank computed.     

Affine Rank 3 Groups on Symmetric Designs

In this note we determine the symmetric designs which admit a primitive rank 3 group with a solvable normal subgroup. This completes the investigations of Dempwolff [4].     

Sums of Dilates in Ordered Groups

We address the ‘sums of dilates’ problem by looking for non-trivial lower bounds on sumsets of the form k·X + l·X, where k and l are non-zero integers and X is a subset of a possibly non-abelian group G (written additively). In particular, we investigate the extension of some results so far known only for the integers to the context of torsion-free or linearly orderable groups, either abelian or not.

On Solvable R* Groups of Finite Rank

Abstract

For an element a of a group G,let S(a) denote the semigroup generated by all conjugates of a in G. We prove that if G is solvable of finite rank and 1 ? S(a) for all 1 ≠ a ∈ G,then ?a ^G ?/?b ^G ? is a periodic group for every b ∈ S(a). Conversely if every two generator subgroup of a finitely generated torsion-free solvable group G has this property then G has finite rank,and if every finitely generated subgroup has this property then every partial order on G can be extended to a total order.     

On the Rank of Picard Groups of Modular Varieties Attached to Orthogonal Groups

We derive lower bounds for the rank of Picard groups of modular varieties associated with natural congruence subgroups of the orthogonal group of an even lattice of signature (2, l). As an example we consider the Siegel modular group of genus 2. The analytic part of this paper also leads to certain class number identities.
