The reaction of a dye cation recombining with an electron in TiO(2), in the presence of Li(+), Ca(2+), and TBA(+) cations, was studied with laser-induced transient absorption measurements. The active cations, Li(+) and Ca(2+), shorten the dye cation lifetime on sensitized TiO(2) but not ZnO electrodes. By combining the absorbance measurements of the dye cation with simultaneous measurements of the current transient, the contribution of the recombination reaction to the current is identified. Furthermore, classical porous electrode theory is used to quantify the behavior of the heterogeneous electrode, and in doing so, the processes contributing to photoinduced current are identified as Helmholtz layer charging, porous electrode charging, recombination reactions, and surface diffusion of the active cations. The rate of charge recombination is proportional to the concentration of initially deposited active cations. The effect of water on the recombination rate and the current is also observed.  相似文献

The dependence of the electron transport and recombination dynamics on the internal surface area of mesoporous nanocrystalline TiO2 films in dye-sensitized solar cells was investigated. The internal surface area was varied by altering the average particle size in the films. The scaling of the photoelectron density and the electron diffusion coefficient at short circuit with internal surface area confirms the results of a recent study (Kopidakis, N.; Neale, N. R.; Zhu, K.; van de Lagemaat, J.; Frank, A. J. Appl. Phys. Lett. 2005, 87, 202106) that transport-limiting traps are located predominately on the surfaces of the particles. The recombination current density was found to increase superlinearly (with an exponent of 1.40 +/- 0.12) with the internal surface area. This result is at odds with the expected linear dependence of the recombination current density on the surface area when only the film thickness is increased. The observed scaling of the recombination current density with surface area is consistent with recombination being transport-limited. Evidence is also presented confirming that photoinjected electrons recombine with redox species in the electrolyte via surface states rather than from the TiO2 conduction band.  相似文献

Time-domain density functional theory simulations resolve the apparent conflict between the central role that thermal fluctuations play in the photoinduced chromophore-TiO 2 electron transfer (ET) in dye-sensitized semiconductor solar cells [J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2005, 127, 18234; Isr. J. Chem. 2003, 42, 213] and the temperature independence of the ET rate [e.g., Annu. Rev. Phys. Chem. 2005, 56, 119]. The study, performed on the alizarin-TiO 2 interface at a range of temperatures, demonstrates that the ET dynamics, both adiabatic and nonadiabatic (NA), are dependent on the temperature, but only slightly. The adiabatic rate increases with temperature because a fluctuation toward a transition state (TS) becomes more likely. A classical TS theory analysis of the adiabatic ET gives a Gibbs energy of activation that is equal to k B T at approximately 50 K, and a prefactor that corresponds to multiple ET pathways. The NA rate increases as a result of changes in the distribution of photoexcited-state energies and, hence, in the density of accessible TiO 2 levels, as expressed in the Fermi Golden Rule. In the system under investigation, the photoexcited state lies close to the bottom of the TiO 2 conduction band (CB), and the chromophore-semiconductor coupling is strong, resulting in primarily adiabatic ET. By extrapolating the simulation results to chromophores with excited states deeper inside the CB and weaker donor-acceptor coupling, we conclude that the interfacial ET is essentially independent of temperature, even though thermal ionic motions create a widespread of initial conditions, determine the distribution of injected electron energy, and drive both adiabatic and NA ET.  相似文献

A procedure for optimization of molecular geometries is presented, combining ab initio calculations with vibrational molecular data from spectroscopy or empirical force fields. Theoretical cartesian forces are transformed to vibrational normal coordinate forces from which geometry increments are calculated. Test results indicate that the method saves considerable effort compared to other optimization schemes.  相似文献

State-resolved differential cross sections, total and integral cross sections, average vibrational energy transfer, and the relative probabilities are computed for the H(+)+H2 system using the newly obtained ab initio potential energy surfaces at the full CI/cc-pVQZ level of accuracy which allow for both the direct vibrational inelastic and the charge transfer processes. The quantum dynamics is treated within the vibrational close-coupling infinite-order-sudden approximation approach using the two ab initio quasidiabatic potential energy surfaces. The computed collision attributes for both the processes are compared with the available state-to-state scattering experiments at E(c.m.)=20 eV. The results are in overall good agreement with most of the observed scattering features such as rainbow positions, integral cross sections, and relative vibrational energy transfers. A comparison with the earlier theoretical study carried out on the semiempirical surfaces (diatomics in molecules) is also made to illustrate the reliability of the potential energy surfaces used in the present work.  相似文献

The relaxation in the electron density which accompanies the ionization of an electron from a transition metal atom in an ionic complex has been illustrated by ab initio calculations on the CoO10?6 cluster. It is found that the relaxation density is almost independent of the particular orbital from which the electron is removed.  相似文献

Atomic clusters of TiO(2) are modeled by means of state-of-the-art techniques to characterize their structural, electronic and optical properties. We combine ab initio molecular dynamics, static density functional theory, time-dependent density functional theory, and many body techniques, to provide a deep and comprehensive characterization of these systems. TiO(2) clusters can be considered as the starting seeds for the synthesis of larger nanostructures, which are of technological interest in photocatalysis and photovoltaics. In this work, we prove that clusters with anatase symmetry are energetically stable and can be considered as the starting seeds to growth much larger and complex nanostructures. The electronic gap of these inorganic molecules is investigated, and shown to be larger than the optical gap by almost 4 eV. Therefore, strong excitonic effects appear in these systems, much more than in the corresponding bulk phase. Moreover, the use of various levels of theory demonstrates that charge transfer effects play an important role under photon absorption, and therefore the use of adiabatic functionals in time dependent density functional theory has to be carefully evaluated.  相似文献

We report a comparison of charge transport and recombination dynamics in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) employing nanocrystalline TiO(2) and SnO(2) films and address the impact of these dynamics upon photovoltaic device efficiency. Transient photovoltage studies of electron transport in the metal oxide film are correlated with transient absorption studies of electron recombination with both oxidized sensitizer dyes and the redox couple. For all three processes, the dynamics are observed to be 2-3 orders of magnitude faster for the SnO(2) electrode. The origins of these faster dynamics are addressed by studies correlating the electron recombination dynamics to dye cations with chronoamperometric studies of film electron density. These studies indicate that the faster recombination dynamics for the SnO(2) electrodes result both from a 100-fold higher electron diffusion constant at matched electron densities, consistent with a lower trap density for this metal oxide relative to TiO(2), and from a 300 mV positive shift of the SnO(2) conduction band/trap states density of states relative to TiO(2). The faster recombination to the redox couple results in an increased dark current for DSSCs employing SnO(2) films, limiting the device open-circuit voltage. The faster recombination dynamics to the dye cation result in a significant reduction in the efficiency of regeneration of the dye ground state by the redox couple, as confirmed by transient absorption studies of this reaction, and in a loss of device short-circuit current and fill factor. The importance of this loss pathway was confirmed by nonideal diode equation analyses of device current-voltage data. The addition of MgO blocking layers is shown to be effective at reducing recombination losses to the redox electrolyte but is found to be unable to retard recombination dynamics to the dye cation sufficiently to allow efficient dye regeneration without resulting in concomitant losses of electron injection efficiency. We conclude that such a large acceleration of electron dynamics within the metal oxide films of DSSCs may in general be detrimental to device efficiency due to the limited rate of dye regeneration by the redox couple and discuss the implications of this conclusion for strategies to optimize device performance.  相似文献

A modified scheme of a previously developed concept of atomic valence numbers in molecules is presented. The relation to population analysis is demonstrated. The scheme is suitable for ab initio wave functions with extended basis sets. The procedure involved a combination of symmetric orthogonalization and contraction of the basis set. The method is used for a systematic investigation of a series of compounds with first-row atoms from Li to F. The predicted atomic charges and valence numbers are in line with results from infrared spectroscopy and multipole moment analysis.  相似文献

Calculated energy and molecular properties of the ground and low-energy excited states of formamide are presented at the ground state geometry. Satisfactory results are obtained except for the 1* energy which remains too high by 1 eV (which is nevertheless a large improvement over previous calculations). The predicted triplet energies lie at 5.4 eV (3 n*) and 5.8 eV (3*).  相似文献

The halogen bonding between [Ru(dcbpy)(2)(SCN)(2)] dye and I(2) molecule has been studied. The ruthenium complex forms a stable [Ru(dcbpy)(2)(SCN)(2)]···I(2)·4(CH(3)OH) adduct via S···I interaction between the thiocyanate ligand and the I(2) molecule. The adduct can be seen as a model for one of the key intermediates in the regeneration cycle of the oxidized dye by the I(-)/I(3)(-) electrolyte in dye sensitized solar cells.  相似文献

Replacing the nonyl groups on the solar cell dye Ru(4,4'-carboxylic acid-2,2'-bipyridine)(4,4'-dinonyl-2,2'-bipyridine)(NCS)(2) (Z-907) with amino groups results in a marked decrease in solar cell performance. This is despite the fact that the amino derivative (Z-960) has more favourable light absorption characteristics than Z-907 when used with thick nanocrystalline TiO(2) layers. Electron transfer to the electrolyte from the exposed fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate is particularly fast in cells employing the Z-960 dye if a compact TiO(2) blocking layer is not used. The kinetics of electron transfer from the nanocrystalline TiO(2) layer in DSCs employing Z-960 are comparable to those of bare TiO(2) and ca. 2 to 5 times faster than for cells employing Z-907. The faster charge recombination in cells employing Z-960 lowers open-circuit photovoltage and results in very significant charge collection losses that lower short-circuit photocurrent. Voltammetric measurements show that surface modification of FTO electrodes with Z-960 results in slightly more facile charge transfer to acceptor species in triiodide/iodide electrolytes in the dark. A simpler molecule, p-aminobenzoic acid, more dramatically catalyses this charge transfer reaction. Conversely, chemical modification of FTO electrodes with Z-907 or p-toluic acid retards charge transfer kinetics. Similar results are obtained for nanocrystalline TiO(2) electrodes modified with these benzoic acid derivatives. These results strongly imply that surface adsorbed molecules bearing amino groups, including dye molecules, can catalyse charge recombination in dye-sensitized solar cells.  相似文献

From DFT based calculations establishing energy-volume equations of state and electron localization mapping, the electronic structure and crystal chemistry changes from Sn2TiO4 to Sn2TiO6 by oxidation are rationalized; the key effect being the destabilization of divalent tin SnII towards tetravalent state SnIV leading to rutile Sn2TiO6 as experimentally observed. The subsequent electronic structure change is highlighted in the relative change of the electronic band gap which increases from ∼1 eV up to 2.2 eV and the 1.5 times increase of the bulk modulus assigned to the change from covalently SnII based compound to the more ionic SnIV one. Such trends are also confronted with the relevant properties of black SnIIO.  相似文献

Fluorocarbons have been successfully applied as oxygen carriers replacing blood. In order to understand the nature of the interaction between fluorocarbons and hydrocarbons on the one hand and O2, N2 and CO2 on the other, STO-3G calculations have been performed on their complexes. The very slight energies of interaction that were obtained seem to substantiate the contention that O2, N2 and CO2 are physically dissolved in fluorocarbons. This energy of interaction is, however, distinctly larger for fluorocarbons than for hydrocarbons. Electrostatic potentials have been computed around several fluorocarbons. They make it possible to predict the geometries of the complexes that are formed.  相似文献

Summary We compare two methods (Mulliken charges and a distributed multipole analysis, DMA) of representing an ab initio charge distribution for calculating the electrostatic field and potential outside the molecule, using pyrimidine and the RNA base uracil as examples. This is done using a 3-D graphical display of the electrostatic fields, which, when used with real-time rotation, zooming and clipping, has many advantages for qualitatively assessing the electrostatic interactions of a molecule. The errors involved in using Mulliken point charges may be of similar magnitude to the total electrostatic field in regions which are important in recognition processes. The DMA representation automatically includes the anisotropic electrostatic effects of non-spherical features in the charge distribution of each atom, and yet the displayed electrostatic fields around the atoms which have lone-pair density do not show marked anisotropy.  相似文献
