Results of sensitivity measurements in laser refractometric detection in a cylindrical cuvette are reported. A model of laser-beam transmission in a capillary with a liquid is developed. In the present article the effect of compression of Gaussian pulses during their opposing propagation in a medium with inertial cubic nonlinearity is considered. Using methods of computer simulation, conditions are found that determine the optimum regime of compression. On the basis of principles of time holography we suggest a method for recording changes of a spectrum in ultrashort light pulses with a time resolution of up to 10−14 sec. As a clear way to describe the spectrum kinetics, a function of the spectral shift is introduced. The kinetics of fluorescence polarization in intense pulse excitation of solid disordered solutions of bichromophores that consist of complex molecules of two types between which there can be inductiveresonance transfer of electron-excitation energy is theoretically investigated. Variants of fluorescence excitation by single pulses and pulse trains are considered. The lifetime of the fluorescence of a given solution increases with the intensity of the exciting pulses. The possibility of controlling the duration of fluorescence attenuation for donor molecules incorporated into the bichromophores by the action of luminescence radiation at the frequency of acceptor-molecule absorption on the solution is demonstrated. It is established that, in the case of laser action on materials in large illuminated spots in atmospheric-pressure air for a laser radiation power density q≤2 MW/cm2 (λ=1.315 μm), an evaporative regime with plane scattering of the laser-produced erosion plasma is realized while, for q≈5–17 MW/cm2, the plasma front is transferred to the air, leading to plasma screening of the target and shaping of a subsonic radiation wave in the air. As the duration of the laser pulses increases (τ∼160 μsec), in spite of the large illuminated spots (S∼150 cm2) the evaporative regime of the laser action with plane plasma scattering goes over into a regime with jet outlow and formation of a quasistationary shock wave. The effect of the shape of the excitation pulses on the magnitude of the frequency chirp in an injection laser is investigated. It is established that as the degree of rectangularity of the pulses becomes higher, the frequency chirp increases. Simultaneous consideration of the effect of residual charge in the active region of the laser, the delay of stimulated radiation, and the frequency chirp indicates that in the case of high-velocity code modulation of an injection laser, in the latter an irregular frequency chirp appears that can exert a noticeable influence on the distortion of code trains of pulses having a super-Gaussian shape, when they propagate in media with a dispersion of 100 p.s./nm/km and above. The influence of changes in the refractive indices of the active medium and the loss modulator on the amplitude-detuning characteristic of a CO2 laser was theoretically investigated. It is shown that at a comparatively great magnitude of sweeping the “instantaneous” lasing frequency, the magnitude of the laser response increases not only in negative detunings, but also over a wide range of positive detunings. The use of the procedure of changing the magnitude and sign of detuning as well as the range of sweeping and the frequency of modulation makes it possible to realize various periodic and chaotic regimes of lasing, i.e., to exercise control over the time and energy parameters of pulses over a very wide range. Based on calculation of the nonstationary system of equations taking into consideration the interaction of waves of pumping, cocurrent and back induced RS (IRS), and polarization waves of a scattering medium, refinement is made of the IRS parameters for ethanol. The influence of cocurrent IRS generated from quantum noises of polarization on the process of amplification of picosecond pulses in a field of oppositely directed subnanosecond pumping pulses is investigated. It is shown that as a result of the high intensity of radiation upon subnanosecond pumping the cocurrent Stokes radiation generation exerts considerable influence on the amplification of oppositely directed IRS pulses: it changes not only the energy characteristics of the entire process but the time envelopes of the pulses as well. We carry out an analysis of the characteristics of nonlinear luminescence of a multicomponent layer system consisting of layers of molecules of a sensitizer, donor, and acceptor with inductive-resonance transfer of energy between the components of the molecular ensemble. We show that in a stationary regime bistable dependences of the populations of excited states of molecules on excitation intensity are realized without external feedback. For pulse pumping, we show the possibility for forming response-luminescence pulses with widely variable characteristics: shape, duration, intensity, and delay. Belorussian State University, 4, F. The spectral dependences of the optical characteristics governing radiation transfer in scattering media are analyzed within the wavelength range of 0.4–14 μm for three types of aerosols. The wavelength ranges where approximate methods of calculation of frequency-contrast characteristics are applicable are established; the corresponding limitting masses of aerosol particles in a layer per unit of surface area are determined for which approximate methods provide acceptable accuracy. The nonlinear dynamics of a waveguide CO2 laser with combined periodic loss and pumping modulation is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The possibilities of controlling time and energy parameters of the output radiation using the corresponding selection of the detuning of the cavity's longitudinal mode from the center of the amplification line, the amplitude, and the frequency of loss modulation are demonstrated. The observed asymmetric dependence of the lasing-radiation density on the detuning of the cavity frequency is explained by the attendant modulation of the refractive index of the loss modulator. An adaptive optical closed-loop feedback system based on a phase-conjugation algorithm has been developed and investigated. It includes a deformable bimorph mirror and a Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor. This system was used to improve the radiation focusing in an ultrashort-pulse laser designed for basic research in the field of high-energy physics. With the indicated system, the power density of 10-TW radiation pulses in the focal plane of a Ti:Al2O3 laser reached 4 ⋅ 1019 W/cm2. Using methods of high-speed kinetic laser spectroscopy, we investigated the dynamics and mechanisms of rapidly progressing relaxation processes in multiatomic molecules. We separated intra- and intermolecular channels of relaxation of the vibrational energy of excitation by the rate of transformation of nonstationary absorption spectra in a picosecond range of times. The role of highly excited electronic states in the process of electronic-vibrational relaxation in molecules of the class of phenazines was ascertained. Applying femtosecond light pulses in a real time scale, we recorded the dynamics of the decay of optically induced anisotropy in rarefied vapors of organic compounds. Several mechanisms of transfer of a hydrogen atom in the process of formation of free radicals in photoreduction of ketones were established. The dynamics of formation of inter- and intramolecular exciplexes in binary gas-phase systems was investigated. We determined the mechanisms of intramolecular dissociation of a C–O chemical bond in spiropyrans and xanthene dyes. Photodissociation of S–S bonds in molecules of disulfides was studied. The possibility of the existence of states with intramolecular charge transport with a twisted configuration for organic free radicals is shown. To whom correspondence should be addressed.
