A new finite volume method for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, expressed in arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) form, is presented. The method uses a staggered storage arrangement for the pressure and velocity variables and adopts an edge‐based data structure and assembly procedure which is valid for arbitrary n‐sided polygonal meshes. Edge formulas are presented for assembling the ALE form of the momentum and pressure equations. An implicit multi‐stage time integrator is constructed that is geometrically conservative to the precision of the arithmetic used in the computation. The method is shown to be second‐order‐accurate in time and space for general time‐dependent polygonal meshes. The method is first evaluated using several well‐known unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes problems before being applied to a periodically forced aeroelastic problem and a transient free surface problem. An operator splitting scheme for the stream‐function formulation of unsteady Navier–Stokes equations
A fictitious time is introduced into the unsteady equation of the stream function rendering it into a higher‐order ultra‐parabolic equation. The convergence with respect to the fictitious time (we call the latter ‘internal iterations’) allows one to obtain fully implicit nonlinear scheme in full time steps for the physical‐time variable. For particular choice of the artificial time increment, the scheme in full time steps is of second‐order of approximation. For the solution of the internal iteration, a fractional‐step scheme is proposed based on the splitting of the combination of the Laplace, bi‐harmonic and advection operators. A judicious choice for the time staggering of the different parts of the nonlinear advective terms allows us to prove that the internal iterations are unconditionally stable and convergent. We assess the number of operations needed per time step and show computational effectiveness of the proposed scheme. We prove that when the internal iterations converge, the scheme is second‐order in physical time and space, nonlinear, implicit and absolutely stable. The performance of the scheme is demonstrated for the flow created by oscillatory motion of the lid of a square cavity. All theoretical findings are demonstrated practically. A discretization method is presented for the full, steady, compressible Navier–Stokes equations. The method makes use of quadrilateral finite volumes and consists of an upwind discretization of the convective part and a central discretization of the diffusive part. In the present paper the emphasis lies on the discretization of the convective part. The solution method applied solves the steady equations directly by means of a non-linear relaxation method accelerated by multigrid. The solution method requires the discretization to be continuously differentiable. For two upwind schemes which satisfy this requirement (Osher's and van Leer's scheme), results of a quantitative error analysis are presented. Osher's scheme appears to be increasingly more accurate than van Leer's scheme with increasing Reynolds number. A suitable higher-order accurate discretization of the convection terms is derived. On the basis of this higher-order scheme, to preserve monotonicity, a new limiter is constructed. Numerical results are presented for a subsonic flat plate flow and a supersonic flat plate flow with oblique shock wave–boundary layer interaction. The results obtained agree with the predictions made. Useful properties of the discretization method are that it allows an easy check of false diffusion and that it needs no tuning of parameters. 相似文献

Implicit weighted essentially non‐oscillatory schemes for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations
A class of lower–upper/approximate factorization (LUAF) implicit weighted essentially non‐oscillatory (ENO; WENO) schemes for solving the two‐dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in a generalized co‐ordinate system is presented. The algorithm is based on the artificial compressibility formulation, and symmetric Gauss–Seidel relaxation is used for computing steady state solutions while symmetric successive overrelaxation is used for treating time‐dependent flows. WENO spatial operators are employed for inviscid fluxes and central differencing for viscous fluxes. Internal and external viscous flow test problems are presented to verify the numerical schemes. The use of a WENO spatial operator not only enhances the accuracy of solutions but also improves the convergence rate for the steady state computation as compared with using the ENO counterpart. It is found that the present solutions compare well with exact solutions, experimental data and other numerical results. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Projection‐based variational multiscale method for incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in time‐dependent domains 下载免费PDF全文
A variational multiscale method for computations of incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in time‐dependent domains is presented. The proposed scheme is a three‐scale variational multiscale method with a projection‐based scale separation that uses an additional tensor valued space for the large scales. The resolved large and small scales are computed in a coupled way with the effects of unresolved scales confined to the resolved small scales. In particular, the Smagorinsky eddy viscosity model is used to model the effects of unresolved scales. The deforming domain is handled by the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian approach and by using an elastic mesh update technique with a mesh‐dependent stiffness. Further, the choice of orthogonal finite element basis function for the resolved large scale leads to a computationally efficient scheme. Simulations of flow around a static beam attached to a square base, around an oscillating beam and around a plunging aerofoil are presented. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

An improved projection scheme is proposed and applied to pseudospectral collocation-Chebyshev approximation for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. It consists of introducing a correct predictor for the pressure, one which is consistent with a divergence-free velocity field at each time step. The main objective is to allow a time variation of the pressure gradient at boundaries. From different test problems, it is shown that this method, associated with a multistep second-order time scheme, provides a time accuracy of the same order as the temporal scheme used for the pressure, and also improves the prediction of the velocity slip. Moreover, it does not exhibit any numerical boundary layer mentioned as a drawback of fractional steps algorithm, and does not require the use of staggered grids for the velocity and the pressure. Its effectiveness is validated by comparison with a previous time-splitting algorithm proposed by Goda (K. Goda, J. Comput. Phys., 30 , 76–95 (1979)) and implemented by Gresho (P. Gresho, Int. j. numer. methods fluids, 11 , 587–620 (1990)) to finite element approximations. Steady and unsteady solutions for the regularized driven cavity and the rotating cavity submitted to throughflow are also used to assess the efficiency of this algorithm. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

The accuracy of colocated finite volume schemes for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations on non‐smooth curvilinear grids is investigated. A frequently used scheme is found to be quite inaccurate on non‐smooth grids. In an attempt to improve the accuracy on such grids, three other schemes are described and tested. Two of these are found to give satisfactory results. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

This paper is concerned with the problem of shape optimization of two‐dimensional flows governed by the time‐dependent Navier–Stokes equations. We derive the structures of shape gradients for time‐dependent cost functionals by using the state derivative and its associated adjoint state. Finally, we apply a gradient‐type algorithm to our problem, and numerical examples show that our theory is useful for practical purposes and the proposed algorithm is feasible in low Reynolds number flows. An efficient way of obtaining travelling waves in a periodic fluid system is described and tested. We search for steady states in a reference frame travelling at the wave phase velocity using a first‐order pseudospectral semi‐implicit time scheme adapted to carry out the Newton's iterations. The method is compared to a standard Newton–Raphson solver and is shown to be highly efficient in performing this task, even when high‐resolution grids are used. This method is well suited to three‐dimensional calculations in cylindrical or spherical geometries. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Two‐level consistent splitting methods based on three corrections for the time‐dependent Navier–Stokes equations 下载免费PDF全文
Three kinds of two‐level consistent splitting algorithms for the time‐dependent Navier–Stokes equations are discussed. The basic technique of two‐level type methods for solving the nonlinear problem is first to solve a nonlinear problem in a coarse‐level subspace, then to solve a linear equation in a fine‐level subspace. Hence, the two‐level methods can save a lot of work compared with the one‐level methods. The approaches to linearization are considered based on Stokes, Newton, and Oseen corrections. The stability and convergence demonstrate that the two‐level methods can acquire the optimal accuracy with the proper choice of the coarse and fine mesh scales. Numerical examples show that Stokes correction is the simplest, Newton correction has the best accuracy, while Oseen correction is preferable for the large Reynolds number problems and the long‐time simulations among the three methods. This paper contains a comparison of four SIMPLE‐type methods used as solver and as preconditioner for the iterative solution of the (Reynolds‐averaged) Navier–Stokes equations, discretized with a finite volume method for cell‐centered, colocated variables on unstructured grids. A matrix‐free implementation is presented, and special attention is given to the treatment of the stabilization matrix to maintain a compact stencil suitable for unstructured grids. We find SIMPLER preconditioning to be robust and efficient for academic test cases and industrial test cases. Compared with the classical SIMPLE solver, SIMPLER preconditioning reduces the number of nonlinear iterations by a factor 5–20 and the CPU time by a factor 2–5 depending on the case. The flow around a ship hull at Reynolds number 2E9, for example, on a grid with cell aspect ratio up to 1:1E6, can be computed in 3 instead of 15 h.Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Unsteady analytical solutions to the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations are presented. They are fully three-dimensional vector solutions involving all three Cartesian velocity components, each of which depends non-trivially on all three co-ordinate directions. Although unlikely to be physically realized, they are well suited for benchmarking, testing and validation of three-dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes solvers. The use of such a solution for benchmarking purposes is described. 相似文献

A fourth‐order accurate solution method for the three‐dimensional Helmholtz equations is described that is based on a compact finite‐difference stencil for the Laplace operator. Similar discretization methods for the Poisson equation have been presented by various researchers for Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here, the complicated issue of imposing Neumann boundary conditions is described in detail. The method is then applied to model Helmholtz problems to verify the accuracy of the discretization method. The implementation of the solution method is also described. The Helmholtz solver is used as the basis for a fourth‐order accurate solver for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. Numerical results obtained with this Navier–Stokes solver for the temporal evolution of a three‐dimensional instability in a counter‐rotating vortex pair are discussed. The time‐accurate Navier–Stokes simulations show the resolving properties of the developed discretization method and the correct prediction of the initial growth rate of the three‐dimensional instability in the vortex pair. The velocity–vorticity formulation is selected to develop a time‐accurate CFD finite element algorithm for the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in three dimensions. The finite element implementation uses equal order trilinear finite elements on a non‐staggered hexahedral mesh. A second order vorticity kinematic boundary condition is derived for the no slip wall boundary condition which also enforces the incompressibility constraint. A biconjugate gradient stabilized (BiCGSTAB) sparse iterative solver is utilized to solve the fully coupled system of equations as a Newton algorithm. The solver yields an efficient parallel solution algorithm on distributed‐memory machines, such as the IBM SP2. Three dimensional laminar flow solutions for a square channel, a lid‐driven cavity, and a thermal cavity are established and compared with available benchmark solutions. A third‐order implicit discontinuous Galerkin method based on a Hermite WENO reconstruction for time‐accurate solution of the compressible Navier–Stokes equations 下载免费PDF全文
A space and time third‐order discontinuous Galerkin method based on a Hermite weighted essentially non‐oscillatory reconstruction is presented for the unsteady compressible Euler and Navier–Stokes equations. At each time step, a lower‐upper symmetric Gauss–Seidel preconditioned generalized minimal residual solver is used to solve the systems of linear equations arising from an explicit first stage, single diagonal coefficient, diagonally implicit Runge–Kutta time integration scheme. The performance of the developed method is assessed through a variety of unsteady flow problems. Numerical results indicate that this method is able to deliver the designed third‐order accuracy of convergence in both space and time, while requiring remarkably less storage than the standard third‐order discontinous Galerkin methods, and less computing time than the lower‐order discontinous Galerkin methods to achieve the same level of temporal accuracy for computing unsteady flow problems. Body conforming orthogonal grids were generated using a fast hyperbolic method for aerofoils, and were used to solve the Navier–Stokes equation in the generalized orthogonal system for the first time for time accurate simulation of incompressible flow. For grid generation, the Beltrami equation and the definition equation for the orthogonality are solved using a finite difference method. The grids generated around aerofoils by this method have better orthogonality than the results published by earlier investigators. The Navier–Stokes equation at Reynolds numbers of 3000 and 35 000 for NACA 0012 and NACA 0015 respectively, have been solved as an application. The obtained results match quite well with the corresponding experimental results. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

A semi‐implicit three‐step Runge–Kutta scheme for the unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations with third‐order accuracy in time is presented. The higher order of accuracy as compared to the existing semi‐implicit Runge–Kutta schemes is achieved due to one additional inversion of the implicit operator I‐τγL, which requires inversion of tridiagonal matrices when using approximate factorization method. No additional solution of the pressure‐Poisson equation or evaluation of Navier–Stokes operator is needed. The scheme is supplied with a local error estimation and time‐step control algorithm. The temporal third‐order accuracy of the scheme is proved analytically and ascertained by analysing both local and global errors in a numerical example. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

In this paper, we present an application of a parallel‐in‐time algorithm for the solution of the unsteady Navier–Stokes model equations that are of parabolic–elliptic type. This method is based on the alternated use of a coarse global sequential solver and a fine local parallel one. A standard finite volume/finite differences first‐order approach is used for discretization of the unsteady two‐dimensional Navier–Stokes equations. The Taylor vortex decay problem and the confined flow around a square cylinder were selected as unsteady flow examples to illustrate and analyse the properties of the parallel‐in‐time method through numerical experiments. The influence of several parameters on the computing time required to perform a parallel‐in‐time calculation on a PC cluster was verified. Among them we have analysed the influence of the number of processors, the number of iterations for convergence, the resolution of the spatial domain and the influence of the time‐step sizes ratio between the coarse and fine grids. Significant computer time saving was achieved when compared with the single processor computing time, particularly when the spatial dimension of the problem is low and the temporal scale is large. The application of standard multigrid methods for the solution of the Navier–Stokes equations in complicated domains causes problems in two ways. First, coarsening is not possible to full extent since the geometry must be resolved by the coarsest grid used. Second, for semi-implicit time-stepping schemes, robustness of the convergence rates is usually not obtained for convection–diffusion problems, especially for higher Reynolds numbers. We show that both problems can be overcome by the use of algebraic multigrid (AMG), which we apply for the solution of the pressure and momentum equations in explicit and semi-implicit time-stepping schemes. We consider the convergence rates of AMG for several model problems and demonstrate the robustiness of the proposed scheme. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献
