Models of medium-induced radiative parton energy loss account for the strong suppression of high-p(T) hadron spectra in square root of (S)NN=200 GeV Au-Au collisions at BNL RHIC in terms of a single "jet quenching parameter" q. We observe that q can be given a model-independent, nonperturbative, quantum field theoretic definition in terms of the short-distance behavior of a particular lightlike Wilson loop. We then use the anti-de Sitter/conformal-field-theory correspondence to obtain a strong-coupling calculation of q in hot N=4 supersymmetric QCD, finding q(SYM)=26.69 square root of alpha(SYM)N(c)T(3) in the limit in which both N(c) and 4pialpha(SYM)N(c) are large. Thus, at strong coupling q is not proportional to the entropy density s, or to some "number density of scatterers" since, unlike the number of degrees of freedom, q does not grow like N(c)(2).  相似文献

Quenched lattice data for the interaction (in terms of heavy quark free energies) in the color-singlet channel at finite temperatures are fitted and used within the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation formalism to obtain binding energies and scattering phase shifts for the lowest eigenstates in the charmonium and bottomonium systems in a hot gluon plasma. The partial dissociation rate due to the Bhanot-Peskin process is calculated using different assumptions for the gluon distribution function, including free massless gluons, massive gluons, and massive damped gluons. It is demonstrated that a temperature dependent gluon mass has an essential influence on the heavy quarkonia dissociation, but that this process alone is insufficient to describe the heavy quarkonia dissociation rates.Arrival of the final proofs: 8 July 2005PACS: 12.38.Gc, 12.38.Mh, 14.40.GxD. A new Monte Carlo implementation of Djordjevic?s dynamical scattering generalization of the DGLV radiative energy loss opacity series is used with a hybrid interpolation scheme to compute both light and heavy quark jet quenching up to third order in opacity. The enhancement of the ratio of bottom to charm quark energy loss due to perturbative long range color magnetic effects in nonuniform Bjorken expanding geometries is found to reduce the significance of the heavy quark jet puzzle posed by the observed near equality (within sizeable errors) of pion and nonphotonic electron nuclear modification at RHIC. Jet Flavor Spectroscopy discussed below will be a powerful tool to differentiate competing dynamical models of the QGP produced in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions.  相似文献

We assume that qq pairs in a quark jet are generated similarly to e+e? pairs in a constant uniform electric field. In this way we obtain relative yields and a lower bound for the average transverse momenta (ATM) of all quark flavors. In particular, the ATM of strange quarks would be larger than those of nonstrange ones. From an analysis of the mass dependence of the widths of the parent-trajectory hadrons an estimation of the radius of the colour electric field tube is obtained.  相似文献

The first and second moments of the transverse momentum distribution of pions ine + e ?-annihilation at fixed longitudinal momentum with respect to the jet axis are discussed, treating the hadronic final state evolving from the 2-quark system in the framework of a fireball-model. Good agreement with the published data is found. A comparison with thep T -distribution of electroproduction is made, showing qualitative agreement. This casts serious doubts on previous conclusions favoring a large partonk T inside the proton.  相似文献

For heavy meson systems, we study the heavy quark potential, which emerges from the effective dilaton-gluon coupling inspired from the superstring theory. We put emphasis on the new confinement generating mechanism of this potential through the investigation of the spin-averaged energy levels of the heavy meson systems. By using a unified approach to the solutions of the Schr?dinger and the spinless Salpeter equations, we can examine in a realistic way the effects of using a relativistic kinetic energy. The obtained results agree favourably with other predictions, and the relativistic equation can better account for the observed energy levels.  相似文献

Multiple scattering, modified fragmentation functions, and radiative energy loss of a heavy-quark propagating in a nuclear medium are investigated in perturbative QCD. Because of the quark mass dependence of the gluon formation time, the medium size dependence of heavy-quark energy loss is found to change from a linear to a quadratic form when the initial energy and momentum scale are increased relative to the quark mass. The radiative energy loss is also significantly suppressed relative to a light quark due to the suppression of collinear gluon emission by a heavy quark.  相似文献

Jets produced in nucleus–nucleus collisions at the LHC are expected to be strongly modified due to the interaction of the parton shower with the dense QCD matter. Here, we point out that jet quenching can leave signatures not only in the longitudinal and transverse jet energy and multiplicity distributions, but also in the hadrochemical composition of the jet fragments. In particular, we show that even in the absence of medium-effects at or after hadronization, the medium-modification of the parton shower may result in significant changes in jet hadrochemistry. We discuss how jet hadrochemistry can be studied within the high-multiplicity environment of nucleus–nucleus collisions at the LHC.  相似文献
