We give a simple criterion which determines when a permutation group U and one additional permutation give rise to a Moufang set. We apply this criterion to show that every Jordan division algebra gives rise in a very natural way to a Moufang set, to provide sufficient conditions for a Moufang set to arise from a Jordan division algebra and to give a characterization of the projective Moufang sets over a commutative field of characteristic different from 2. We consider the existence of Moufang sets related to certain groups of mixed type. This way, we obtain new examples of Moufang sets and new constructions of known classes. The most interesting class of new examples is related to the Moufang quadrangles of type and to the Ree–Tits octagon over a nonperfect field, and the root groups of each member have nilpotency class three.  相似文献

An algebraic construction of degree 3 Jordan algebras (including the exceptional one) as trace 0 elements in a degree 4 Jordan algebra is translated to give a geometric construction of Barbilian planes coordinatized by composition algebras (including the Moufang plane) as skew polar line pairs and points on the quadratic surface determined by a polarity of projective 3-space over a smaller composition algebra.  相似文献

The split version of the Freudenthal–Tits magic square stems from Lie theory and constructs a Lie algebra starting from two split composition algebras ,  and . The geometries appearing in the second row are Severi varieties [24]. We provide an easy uniform axiomatization of these geometries and related ones, over an arbitrary field. In particular we investigate the entry A2×A2A2×A2 in the magic square, characterizing Hermitian Veronese varieties, Segre varieties and embeddings of Hjelmslev planes of level 2 over the dual numbers. In fact this amounts to a common characterization of “projective planes over 2-dimensional quadratic algebras”, in cases of the split and non-split Galois extensions, the inseparable extensions of degree 2 in characteristic 2 and the dual numbers.  相似文献

We show that conjugacy classes of Baer involutions and non-elliptic polarities, respectively, of proper (i.e., non-desarguesian) Moufang planes are interrelated. Restriction of the conjugating group to the stabilizer of a triangle or a quadrangle does not refine the classes. These results are applied to prove transitivity properties for the centralizers of these polarities. Along the way, a new proof is obtained for the fact that the automorphism group of a Moufang plane acts transitively on quadrangles.  相似文献

We make a start on the investigation of “small” solutions to systems of homogeneous linear equations over non-commutative division algebras. In this paper we prove some upper and lower bounds for the sizes of solutions to such systems. To measure solutions and coefficient matrices we define heights which satisfy natural invariance and finiteness properties.  相似文献

We study the existence of free subalgebras in division algebras, and prove the following general result: if $A$ is a noetherian domain which is countably generated over an uncountable algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $0$ , then either the quotient division algebra of $A$ contains a free algebra on two generators, or it is left algebraic over every maximal subfield. As an application, we prove that if $k$ is an uncountable algebraically closed field and $A$ is a finitely generated $k$ -algebra that is a domain of GK-dimension strictly less than $3$ , then either $A$ satisfies a polynomial identity, or the quotient division algebra of $A$ contains a free $k$ -algebra on two generators.  相似文献
