The dynamic and static (creep, stress relaxation) mechanical properties of various acrylics have been investigated. A relation is established between the structure and the macroscopic mechanical properties. The previous thermal history and the characteristics of the state of stress are shown to affect the nature of the relaxation processes and the mechanical properties of the acrylics. Generalized stress relaxation curves are constructed. The mechanical glass transition temperatures of the acrylics investigated are determined.Lenin Moscow State Pedagogic Institute. On the basis of a phenomenological analysis of the temperature dependence of the modulus of instantaneous elasticity and the stress relaxation process, it is suggested that in the region of small deformations there are no breakages of the macromolecules that might affect the elasto-relaxational behavior of highly oriented polymers (fibers) as in the region of large deformations. To judge from the values obtained for the energy constants, these properties are determined by the number of intermolecular bonds in the amorphous regions (modulus of instantaneous elasticity) and the physical events associated with the reorganization of these bonds and hindered rotation of the chain units (relaxation process).S. Epoxy resin cured with methyltetrahydrophthalic and maleic anhydrides has been tested in relaxation, creep, and compression at constant strain rate. The constants characterizing the relaxation properties and the approximate limits of the spectrum of most probable relaxation times have been determined; it is shown that the mechanical properties can be described by means of equations with two relaxation times. The residual optical effect has also been investigated. The relaxation properties of polyethylene are analyzed. The nonlinear time-dependent stress-strain relations and the creep and relaxation equations are obtained from the experimental creep data. It is shown with reference to three chlorinated polymers (CPVC, VKhVD-40, and PCN) that in the case of structural plasticization the optimum of the physico-mechanical properties corresponds to small amounts (0.02–0.04%) of structural plasticizer in the system. This article examines the cellular structure and mechanical properties of elastic foamed polyurethanes with a bimodal cellular structure (BFPUs). It is shown that the sizes of the oval cells (3–12 mm) in the elastic foamed polyurethenes that are studied are a tenth of an order greater than the sizes of the polyhedral cells (0.1–0.6 mm). Conversely, for rigid foamed polyurethanes, the polyhedral cells are more than a tenth of an order larger than the oval cells (microcells). The equations of the compression curve of BFFUs are found, and it is established that the deformation of BFPUs is determined by the deformation function of the cellular structure and the viscoelastic properties of the polymer matrix. The deformation functions of the cellular structure and the relaxation properties of BFPUs are determined. The propagation of sound in oriented polymers is considered. Starting from an assumption concerning the superposition of relaxation processes in polymers, expressions are obtained for the speed and absorption of sound as functions of the relaxation spectrum, molecular orientation, and crystallinity. Pressure relaxation was examined in the cylinder of an MPT Monsanto processability tester after stopping the piston. The experimental function of the pressure drop F(t) was smoothed over and approximated by cubic splines. The spectra of pressure relaxation times (SPRT) were obtained according to the method of Schwarzl-Staverman. The SPRT method served well for estimating the spectra of the molecular-mass distribution (MMD) of polymers close in their physical sense to the SPRT. The correlation of the characteristic relaxation times and average molecular mass of ethylene-propylene rubbers and polyethylenes obtained by gel permeation chromatography was approximated by optimum models used for calculating the the molecular mass of rubbers according to the measurement results of the relaxation pressure of melts. The SPRT and characteristic relaxation times were used to analyze the significant technical properties of compositions based on polyethylene and rubber. The basic relations of the theory of anisotropic creep of unidirectional glass-reinforced plastics (GRPs) in a three-dimensional stress state are found using a model of a material with inhomogeneous structure and the rheological properties of the resin. These relations are suitable for investigating the stress state of GRPs for resin stresses not exceeding certain values. The effect of temperature on the chemical relaxation of rubbers has been investigated. With reference to nine industrial rubbers it has been shown that during storage in the stressed state (at =const) chemical relaxation is chiefly determined by two processes proceeding at different rates. Furthermore, the chemical relaxation of rubbers is determined not only by the rate constants of these two processes but also by the pre-exponential constants C0i, the relationship between which varies with increase in temperature. It is possible to extrapolate the rate constants (ki) and pre-exponential constants (C0i) from elevated temperatures (110–50° C) to temperatures in the range 20–25° C. Conclusions The PB0, P0D, and PI materials were used to show the possibilities of simulating the long-term relaxation processes for a new group of polymer materials using the time analogies in the linear and nonlinear regions of the viscoelastic properties. The results show that the generalized dependences of compliance and relaxation modulus widen the time range of lead of the relaxation processes by approximately six to seven decimal orders. The stress relaxation in a polymer disk with a central hole, into which a rigid metal rod is press-fitted, is considered. The progressive redistribution of the stresses in the disk has been observed by a photoelastic method. In the theoretical solution of the problem the relaxation properties of the polymer are taken into account by means of a generalized nonlinear Maxwell equation with two terms of the relaxation spectrum. Dynamic viscoelastic properties of ladder polyorganosiloxanes have been studied by the method of induced resonance oscillations in the temperature range from –150 to 300°C and in the frequency range from 8 to 300 Hz. Two broad maxima of mechanical losses were observed for all the polymers studied independently of their chemical structure, a low-temperature maximum in the –150 to 0°C region and a high-temperature maximum in the 0 to 250°C region. It was found that the introduction of alkyl groups into polyphenylsilsesquioxanes does not noticeably affect the position and nature of the low-temperature relaxation peaks but in certain cases leads to an increase in the dynamic modulus in polyphenylalkylsilsesquioxanes, compared with the modulus of polyphenylsilsesquioxane in the same temperature region. In the high-temperature region, a distinct dependence is observed of the relaxation peak on the length and the content of alkyl groups in the polymer. It has been found that increase in the length and the content of alkyl groups is accompanied by a shift in the peak in the direction of low temperatures and a decrease in the value of the modulus. New thermally stable polymers (polyimides, polyarylates, and phenolphthalein-phenolformaldehyde copolymers) were used in a study of the thermofrictional properties of their compositions with molybdenum disulfide.
