The interaction between a plane normal shock and ellipsoidal regions of elevated or lowered density in an ideal perfect gas is investigated. Qualitatively different interaction patterns, regular and irregular, are found to exist. It is noted that as a result of the irregular interaction a complicated flow incorporating refracted shocks, tangential discontinuities, and vortices is formed. The effect of shock cumulation on the axis of symmetry occurring outside or inside a gas inhomogeneity of both lowered and elevated density is studied. The qualitative and quantitative influence of the inhomogeneity shape on the cumulation effect is investigated.

Vortex sheet production by shocks and expansion waves refracting at a density discontinuity was examined and compared using an analytical solution and numerical simulations. The analytical solution showed that with a small exception, vortex sheet strength is generally stronger in fast/slow shock refractions. In contrast, expansion waves generated a stronger vortex sheet in slow/fast refractions. This difference results in larger vorticity deposited by shocks in fast/slow refractions and by expansion waves in slow/fast refractions. Shock refractions become irregular and the analytical solution fails when either incident, transmitted or reflected shock, exceeded the angle limit for an attached shock. To investigate vortex sheet production outside the range of analytical solutions and to verify the applicability of the planar-interface analytical solution to a curved interface, shock refraction through a sinusoidal interface was numerically simulated in the shock frame of reference. It is found that variation in the local incidence angle along the curved interface creates pressure waves that affect the level of deposited vorticity. This contributes to the difference between predictions from local analysis and numerical computation. Furthermore, an interesting behavior of the shock and expansion wave-deposited vorticity in supersonic ramp flow was discovered. When the high- and low-density streams were swapped, while keeping the incident flow Mach numbers constant, a vortex sheet of equal magnitude but of opposite sign was generated.

The behavior of discontinuities (weak shocks) of the parameters of a disturbed flow and their interaction with the discontinuities of the basic flow in the geometric acoustics approximation, when the variation of the intensity of such shocks along the characteristics or the bicharacteristics is described by ordinary differential equations, has been investigated by many authors. Thus, Keller [1] considered the case when the undisturbed flow is three-dimensional and steady, and the external inputs do not depend on the flow parameters. An analogous study was made by Bazer and Fleischman for the MGD isentropic flow of an ideal conducting medium [2], while Lugovtsov [3] studied the three-dimensional steady flow of a gas of finite conductivity for small magnetic Reynolds numbers and no electric field. Several studies (for example, [4]) have considered the behavior of discontinuities of the solutions from the general positions of the theory of hyperbolic systems of quasilinear equations. Finally, the interaction of weak shocks (or the equivalent continuous disturbances) with shock waves was studied in [5–11].In what follows we consider one-dimensional (with plane, cylindrical, and spherical waves) and quasi-one-dimensional unsteady flows, and also plane and axisymmetric steady flows. Two problems are investigated: the variation of the intensity of weak shocks in the presence of inputs which depend on the stream parameters, and the interaction of weak shocks with strong discontinuities which differ from contact (tangential) discontinuities. The thermodynamic properties of the gas are considered arbitrary. We note that the resulting formulas for the interaction coefficients of the weak and strong discontinuities are also valid for nonequilibrium flow.

The features of the flow in the zone of interaction between a plane bow shock and an oblique shock or an isentropic compression wave are studied. The limiting interaction regimes are considered analytically, the similarity conditions are formulated, and the limiting values of the flow parameters are determined for the high-pressure compressed gas jet formed in the interference and for the body surface. On the basis of a numerical solution of the Euler equations the flow specifics in the neighborhood of the spreading line on the body are determined and ways of reducing the dynamic and thermal loadings on this line are proposed.

It is shown that simple physical principles coupled with the inviscid shock jump relations can be applied to the problem of weak Mach reflection to the extent that the triple point path can be predicted from the incident shock Mach number , gas specific heat ratio and the inclination angle of the reflecting surface to the shock normal. Comparison with the Euler code data and with experiments show close agreement for conditions both far and close to transition and that the general shape of the reflected and Mach stem shocks follow simple curves except in the neighbourhood of the triple point. The conflict at the triple point in matching the flow deflection angles and pressures across the contact discontinuity remains. It is shown however that the simple model presented here gives a close match to the cfd and experimental overall shock and contact surface shapes although it cannot predict these or the flow properties in any detail. The shock wave structure of flow around a V-wing and its properties determining the conical flow topology are numerically investigated within the framework of the inviscid gas model on a wide range of the angles of attack and yaw when in the disturbed supersonic flow either nonsymmetric Mach interaction between the shocks attached to the leading edges of the wing or a shockless flow in the compressed layer on the windward cantilever is realized. The subranges of the angles of attack and yaw with the disturbed flow properties characteristic of the wing of the given geometry are determined. It is found that at high angles of attack, when the branching point of the bow shock beneath the leeward cantilever generates an intense contact discontinuity, the structure of the conical flow in the shock layer on the windward cantilever involves a singularity of a new type which can be characterized as a “vortical” Ferri singularity. It is located above the point of convergence of the streamlines proceeding from the leading edges of the wing, at the vertex of the corresponding contact discontinuity. Flow patterns with the point of convergence of the streamlines proceeding from the leading edges located in the elliptical flow region, which is placed at a local maximum of the pressure distribution over the surface are also found. The range of the angles of attack and yaw on which this new property of supersonic conical flows is realized in the presence of a branched shock system is determined.

A study is made of the interaction between an axisymmetric supersonic jet exhausting into vacuum and an obstacle of a fairly complicated configuration and positioned relative to the nozzle in such a way that in the interaction region behind the detached shock wave there is a three-dimensional flow possessing a symmetry plane. The flow in the interaction region is described by the system of equations of motion of an inviscid perfect gas with boundary conditions on the shock wave (Rankine-Hugoniot relation) and on the surface of the obstacle (no-flow condition). The other boundaries of the region are the symmetry plane of the flow and an arbitrarily chosen surface in the supersonic part of the flow.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti Gaza, No. 1, pp. 156–161, January–February, 1981.

Characteristics of unsteady type IV shock/shock interaction
Characteristics of the unsteady type IV shock/shock interaction of hypersonic blunt body flows are investigated by solving the Navier–Stokes equations with high-order numerical methods. The intrinsic relations of flow structures to shear, compression, and heating processes are studied and the physical mechanisms of the unsteady flow evolution are revealed. It is found that the instantaneous surface-heating peak is caused by the fluid in the “hot spot” generated by an oscillating and deforming jet bow shock (JBS) just ahead of the body surface. The features of local shock/boundary layer interaction and vortex/boundary layer interaction are clarified. Based on the analysis of flow evolution, it is identified that the upstream-propagating compression waves are associated with the interaction of the JBS and the shear layers formed by a supersonic impinging jet, and then the interaction of the freestream bow shocks and the compression waves results in entropy and vortical waves propagating to the body surface. Further, the feedback mechanism of the inherent unsteadiness of the flow field is revealed to be related to the impinging jet. A feedback model is proposed to reliably predict the dominant frequency of flow evolution. The results obtained in this study provide physical insight into the understanding of the mechanisms relevant to this complex flow.

A method based on the quasi-one-dimensional treatment of off-design supersonic jet flow is presented, together with the results of calculating the parameters of the jet on the interval of adaptation to the external conditions in the immediate vicinity of the nozzle exit section. On the jet formation interval the region of flow with strong discontinuities (shocks) is replaced by a surface of discontinuity. The mixing effect is taken into account by means of a concentrated mass flux in the section of discontinuity. It is shown that taking into account the real properties of the jet flow on the formation interval makes it possible considerably to improve the accuracy of a number of important flow parameters and to obtain a series of quantitative results that coincide with the experimental data.Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Akademii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No.1, pp. 48–56, January–February, 1993.The author is grateful to E. A numerical investigation is made of the interaction of an underexpanded jet of an inviscid and nonheat-conducting gas issuing from an axisymmetric conical nozzle with plane, cylindrical, and spherical surfaces. It is assumed that the flow turning angle for flow about a barrier is smaller than the critical angle, and subsonic regions are absent in the flow field studied. The effect of the characteristic parameters (Mach number at the nozzle exit, jet underexpansion) on the flow pattern and jet forces is analyzed. The results of numerical calculations are compared to the results of approximate theories and experimental data. A theoretical solution of the problem of the effect of a supersonic jet on a surface of given shape, even in the approximation of an inviscid, nonheat-conducting gas, is quite difficult. A reason for this is that the flow region contains shock waves interacting with each other, contact discontinuities, and zones of mixed sub-and supersonic flow. As far as is known to the authors, the results obtained for three-dimensional problems for the interaction of supersonic jets with each other or with barriers are primarily experimental (for example, [1–6]). A numerical analysis of the interaction of axisymmetric ideal-gas jets was carried out in [7–10]. In [7] a three-dimensional form of the method of characteristics was used to calculate the initial interaction region for two supersonic cylindrical jets (with Mach number M=10) intersecting at an angle of 60. The interaction of several jets has been considered in [8, 9], where the solution was obtained according to the Lax—Wendroff method without elimination of the discontinuity lines of flow parameters. In [10] the lateral interaction of axisymmetric supersonic jets with each other and with a plate is investigated by means of a straight-through calculationTranslated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 6, pp. 3–8, November–December, 1974.The authors thank A. The distributions of the gasdynamic parameters (density, pressure, and velocity) and the magnetic field behind the Earth’s bow shock (on the outer boundary of the magnetosheath) generated under sharp variations in the solar wind dynamic pressure are found in the three-dimensional non-planepolarized formulation with allowance for the interplanetary magnetic field within the framework of the ideal magnetohydrodynamic model using the solution to the MHD Riemann problem of breakdown of an arbitrary discontinuity. Such a discontinuity which depends on the inclination of an element of the bow shock surface arises when a contact discontinuity traveling together with the solar wind and on which the solar wind density and, consequently, the dynamic pressure, increases or decreases suddenly impinges on the Earth’s bow shock and propagates along its surface initiating the development of to six waves or discontinuities (shocks). The general interaction pattern is constructed for the entire bow shock surface as a mosaic of exact solutions to the MHD Riemann problem obtained on computer using an original software (MHD Riemann solver) so that the flow pattern is a function of the angular surface coordinates (latitude and longitude). The calculations are carried out for various jumps in density on the contact discontinuity and characteristics parameters of the solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field at the Earth’s orbit. It is found that there exist horseshoe zones on the bow shock in which the increase in the density and the magnetic field strength in the fast shock waves or their reduced decrease in the fast rarefaction waves penetrating into the magnetosheath and arising as a result of sharp variation in the solar wind dynamic pressure is superposed on significant drop in the density and growth in the magnetic field strength in slow rarefaction waves. The distributions of the hydrodynamic parameters and the magnetic field can be used to interpret measurements carried out on spacecraft in the solar wind at the libration point and orbiters in the neighborhood of the Earth’s magnetosphere.

Special curves, called shock polars, are frequently used to determine the state of the gas behind an oblique shock wave from known parameters of the oncoming flow. For a perfect gas, these curves have been constructed and investigated in detail [1]. However, for the solution of problems associated with gas flow at high velocities and high temperatures it is necessary to use models of gases with complicated equations of state. It is therefore of interest to study the properties of oblique shocks in such media. In the present paper, a study is made of the form of the shock polars for two-parameter media with arbitrary equation of state, these satisfying the conditions of Cemplen's theorem. Some properties of oblique shocks in such media that are new compared with a perfect gas are established. On the basis of the obtained results, the existence of triple configurations in steady supersonic flows obtained by the decay of plane shock waves is considered. It is shown that D'yakov-unstable discontinuities decompose into an oblique shock and a centered rarefaction wave, while spontaneously radiating discontinuities decompose into two shocks or into a shock and a rarefaction wave.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 6, pp. 147–153, November–December, 1982.

The flow field in the neighborhood of the three-dimensional intersection of two shocks of different families is investigated when in the plane perpendicular to the line of intersection the flow velocity component is subsonic behind at least one of the departing shocks. In the plane case these flows are not realized. The boundary of the domain of the key parameters for which these flows are possible is determined. The characteristics of the flow field are determined when: (1) behind the departing shocks the flow is homogeneous, and (2) the velocity vectors behind the departing and arriving shocks are parallel to a single plane which contains the intersection line. The flow in Mach-type shock intersection in the neighborhood of the intersection lines (triple points in the plane) is a particular case of the problem considered. It is shown that Mach-type shock intersection is not possible when the intensity of the arriving shocks is less than for their steady-state Mach intersection in the calculation plane. Moscow.

The applicability of the criteria of existence of inviscid vortex structures (vortex Ferri singularities) is studied in the case in which a contact discontinuity of the corresponding intensity proceeds from the branching point of the λ shock wave configuration accompanying turbulent boundary layer separation under the action of an inner shock incident on the leeward wing panel. The calculated and experimental data are analyzed, in particular, those obtained using the special shadow technique developed for visualizing supersonic conical streams in nonsymmetric, Mach number 3 flow around a wing with zero sweep of the leading edges and the vee angle of 2π /3. The applicability of the criteria of existence of inviscid vortex structures is established for contact discontinuities generated by the λ shock wave configuration accompanying turbulent boundary layer separation realized under the action of a shock wave incident on the leeward wing panel. Thus, it is established that the formation of the vortex Ferri singularities in a shock layer is independent of the reason for the existence of the contact discontinuity and depends only on its intensity.

The axisymmetric interaction between a supersonic jet with a finite expansion ratio and a barrier is accompanied by the formation of complex sub- and supersonic flow in a shock layer whose thickness depends on the parameters of the jet and the position of the barrier. The main relationships of the interaction process have been established experimentally ([1–3] and others) and individual results of numerical calculations of such flows are known [4]. An analytical investigation of the parameters in the shock layer formed ahead of a plane barrier when an underexpanded jet impinges on it is presented below. The results of [5], where the region near the axis of a shock layer of arbitrary thickness is analyzed within the framework of a model of flow with a constant density, is placed at the basis of the analysis.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 5, pp. 63–70, September–October, 1978.The author thanks Yu. The results of a numerical study of a new type of singularities in the Mach shock-wave structure realized in supersonic nonsymmetric conical flows over V-wings with a bow shock attached to the leading edges are presented. Within the framework of the ideal gas model we study the changes in the shock system on transition, with increase in the sweep angle, from the region of nonsymmetric Mach interaction of the shocks attached to the leading edges of the wing to the region of special flow patterns, where on the windward cantilever surface a rarefaction flow is realized rather than a flow with an internal shock. It is shown, in particular, that in the region with special wing flow patterns a Mach system of shocks with a submerged shock proceeding from the branch point above the windward cantilever may exist.

The results of a theoretical and experimental investigation of nonsymmetric flow around a V-wing with supersonic leading edges are presented. The range of the angles of attack and yaw, on which additional singular lines are formed on the windward cantilever of the wing, are experimentally determined using different techniques of flow diagnostics. These are one convergence line and two divergence lines in the transverse flow which were not previously observable in the calculations of ideal-gas flow around wings. It is established that the appearance of the three new alternating singular lines located between the central chord of the wing and a convergence line, exterior to them and occurring within the framework of the ideal gas model, is associated with the relation between the intensities of two contact discontinuities. One of these proceeds from the branching point of the bow shock above the leeward cantilever, while the second issues out of the triple point of a λ-shaped shock configuration accompanying developed turbulent-boundary-layer separation generated by an internal shock incident on the leeward cantilever surface. If the intensity of the contact discontinuity proceeding from the branching point of the bow shock is large as compared with that of the contact discontinuity of the λ-configuration, then the flow pattern realized on the windward cantilever is analogous to that obtained within the framework of the ideal gas model, that is, it includes one convergence line on the wing surface. Under these conditions, the results of the calculations within the framework of the ideal gas model are applicable for understanding the phenomena occurring in the wing shock layer in a considerable part of the control parameter range, including the regimes with intense internal shocks generating turbulent boundary layer separation from the leeward cantilever. Corrections should be made only for a carachteristic pressure distribution in the separation zone and, as a consequence of separation, for an elevated pressure level in the vicinity of the central chord which is the stagnation line of the transverse flow that has passed across the oblique and terminating shocks of the λ-configuration and possesses a higher stagnation pressure than the flow that has passed in an ideal gas across the internal shock incident normally on the leeward cantilever. This is possible only when the divergence line, at which the stream surface enclosing the turbulent boundary layer separation zone enters, does not go over from the leeward onto the windward cantilever.
