We have studied the electron-transfer properties of some redox systems on a gold electrode in a lyotropic hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline phase (H1 phase) using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The liquid crystalline medium consists of the nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 and water. The redox reactions that have been studied are ferrocene/ferricenium, [Fe(CN)6]3-/4-, and [Ru(NH3)6]3+/2+. We have confirmed by polarizing optical microscopy that the liquid crystalline nature of the medium is maintained even after the addition of the redox species and the supporting electrolyte. The CV studies show a significant shift in the half-peak potentials of these redox reactions in the liquid crystalline medium. From the EIS studies, we have measured the diffusion coefficients and the kinetic parameters for the redox species. These results are discussed and compared with the values obtained in the conventional solvent medium. The CV and impedance studies demonstrate that the hexagonal columnar phase provides a novel controlled environment for the study of electron-transfer reactions in biological and physiological media.  相似文献

Non-ionic surfactant hexaethylene glycol, C(12)E(6), in water self-assembles into various kinds of mesophases by varying the surfactant concentration. A spatial heterogeneity was discussed on the basis of the diffusion of probe particles dispersed in the C(12)E(6)-water solution. Interestingly, at 50 wt% C(12)E(6) where the hexagonal structure was formed, two kinds of motion of probe particles were observed: some particles normally diffused while others were restricted, indicating the existence of a heterogeneity in the physical properties. Such heterogeneity can be explained in terms of heterogeneous structures composed of hexagonal domains with isotropic-like regions.  相似文献

The partitioning behavior of silica particles was investigated in the Triton X-100/dextran/water system. It was found that both electrostatic effects and interactions between phase-component species and the solid surface played important roles in determining the distribution of solids. Silica partition was highly pH-dependent, which was interpreted in terms of the pH dependence of the Triton X-100/SiO(2) interaction and the weak acidity of dextran. The presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) moved the particles from the top surfactant-rich phase to the interface and the bottom phase, while dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) had the opposite effect. These trends are attributable to the electrostatic interaction between the charged mixed micelles in the top phase and the particles and to the fact that the ionic surfactants modified the adsorption density of the nonionic surfactant on silica.  相似文献

The influences of Triton X-100 on hemoglobin (Hb) behaviors were studied by the methods of UV-Vis spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, HPLC, conductivity, zeta potential and negative-staining transmission electron microscope in Hb/acyclovir/Triton X-100/H2O system. With the increase of Triton X-100 concentration in the system, the percentage of the free acyclovir increased from 58%--63% to 90%--94%. The static quenching constant and the association number of acyclovir to Hb decreased. The fluorescence spectrum, conductivity, zeta potential, fluorescence polarization and negative-staining morphology of Hb tended to recover to those of the original state of Hb in the same concentration of Hb. The interaction between Triton X-100 and Hb is stronger than that between acyclovir and Hb. Most Triton-X-100 was associated with Hb at low Triton X-100 concentration. But the interaction of Triton X-100 with Hb was apparently dominant in high Triton X-100 concentration. The Hb structure was unfolded and finally denatured.  相似文献

Studies by Pulsed Field Gradient NMR (PFG-NMR) methods and other physico-chemical experiments have been used to clarify the processes connected with water self-diffusion in mixtures formed by water and Triton TX-100. In micellar solutions the solvent diffusive trend is related to micelle hydration and, to a much less extent, to micelle size and shape. Hydration numbers from PFG-NMR are close to those obtained by viscosity experiments. In solution phases of the reversed kind, water in oil, water self-diffusion data suggest that aqueous domains are large and bicontinuous. Water self-diffusion in the hexagonal lyotropic mesophase has been interpreted by introducing a geometrydependent contraint, , termed structural factor, which is related to the parameters of the phase.  相似文献

The effect of compressed CO2 and ethylene on the properties of Triton X-100/cyclohexane/water systems was studied at different temperatures and pressures. Surprisingly, it was discovered that the compressed gases had the functions of co-surfactants. At suitable pressures, the water-to-surfactant molar ratio (W0) was enhanced significantly by the dissolution of the gas in the solution. The microenvironment in the reverse micelles was investigated by UV-visible spectroscopy by using methyl orange (MO) as a probe. The influence of n-hexane, Na2CO3, NaHCO3, H2C2O4, and CaCl2 at various concentrations on the solubilization of water in the absence of compressed gases was also investigated in order to obtain some information about the mechanism of the interesting phenomenon. This new route to stabilize reverse micelles may have potential applications to other similar systems. Moreover, the results of this work provide some useful information to get insight into the mechanism of co-surfactants, because a conventional co-surfactant usually contains both polar group and hydrocarbon chain, and it is very difficult to clarify the functions these two groups, while the gases used in this work are small nonpolar molecules, which solely have the function of the hydrocarbon chain in a co-surfactant.  相似文献

We studied at the molecular level the interaction between neutral detergent Triton X-100 aqueous solution and a phospholipid Langmuir monolayer deposited on top using surface pressure measurement and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD). Macroscopically, the detergent-phospholipid system follows the Gibbs law. However, GIXD shows that the detergent and the phospholipid segregate at the interface. The molecular organization of pure phospholipid domains is imposed by the detergent through surface pressure. Compression and expansion of the surface monolayer system in its final state reveal the stability of the phospholipids domains against dissolution by the detergent in the subphase, even above the detergent cmc. This resistance to dissolution is suppressed by an expansion of the monolayer.  相似文献

A novel oil-in-water-type microemulsion system (water/Triton X-100/Tween80/n-hexyl alcohol/n-octane) has been studied. The results of investigations of the mechanism of formation of this system have indicated that the mixture of Triton X-100, Tween80 and n-hexyl alcohol acts as a surface layer. Further studies have shown that by controlling the n-octane content of this system, it is possible to change its cloud point. Furthermore, variation of the environmental temperature has been shown to affect the maximum n-octane content of this system, the maximum n-octane content increases with increasing environmental temperature.  相似文献

Addition of ionic liquids to aqueous surfactant solutions can alter/modify physicochemical properties of such systems in favorable manner. Changes in the properties of aqueous solutions of a useful nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX-100) are assessed upon addition of 2.1 wt% of a common and popular ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (bmimPF6). It is shown that the solubility of 'hydrophobic' bmimPF6 in aqueous TX-100 increases with TX-100 concentration. This observation combined with the conductivity data strongly indicates partitioning of bmimPF6 into TX-100 micellar phase. Behavior of a variety of molecular absorbance [methyl orange, phenol blue, and N,N-diethyl-4-nitroaniline] and fluorescence [phenyl on the TX-100, pyrene, pyrene-1-carboxaldehyde, 2-(p-toluidino)naphthalene-6-sulfonate, and 1,3-bis-(1-pyrenyl)propane] probes further confirm this observation. Statistically insignificant increase in critical micelle concentration (cmc) and decrease in aggregation number (N(agg)) of TX-100 micelles are observed upon addition of 2.1 wt% bmimPF6. Based on the overall data, it is inferred that ionic liquid bmimPF6 partitions into the TX-100 micellar phase; presence of bmimPF6 both close to the core as well as in the palisade layer of TX-100 micelles is suggested. Presence of favorable interactions (e.g., H-bonding, dipole-induced dipole, among others) between bmimPF6 and TX-100 is proposed to be the reason for these observations.  相似文献

Background  

The rapid, simple determination of surfactants in environmental samples is essential because of the extensive use and its potential as contaminants. We describe a simple, rapid chemiluminescence method for the direct determination of the non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100 (polyethylene glycol tert-octylphenyl ether) in environmental water samples. The optimized experimental conditions were selected, and the mechanism of the Luminol-H2O2-Triton X-100 chemiluminesence system was also studied.  相似文献

A new method of forming stable dispersions of alkanethiol and aromatic thiol stabilized gold nanoparticles in two different lyotropic liquid crystalline mediums, namely, a columnar hexagonal phase made up of a Triton X-100/water system and an inverse columnar hexagonal phase made up of pure AOT, are presented. The dispersions have been characterized using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and polarizing optical microscopy. Our studies show that the gold nanoparticles are distributed outside the columns formed by both the surfactants. Such dispersions can find applications in the study of nanoparticles as well as in the development of devices based on some unique properties of metal nanoparticles.  相似文献

The aggregation and cloud point behavior of Tb(III)-doped silica nanoparticles has been studied in Triton X-100 (TX-100) solutions at various concentration conditions by fluorimetry, dynamic light scattering, electrophoresis and transmission electron microscopy methods. The temperature responsive behavior of nanoparticles is observed at definite concentration of TX-100, where the aggregation of TX-100 at the silica/water interface is evident from the increased size of the silica nanoparticles. The reversible dehydration of TX-100 aggregates at the silica/water interface should be assumed as the main reason of the temperature induced phase separation of silica nanoparticles. The distribution of nanoparticles between aqueous and surfactant rich phases at the phase separation conditions can be modified by the effect of additives.  相似文献

The influence of UV-irradiation on the interaction of hemoglobin (Hb) with Triton X-100 is investigated by UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and freeze-fractured transmission electron microscopy. It is found that in Triton X-100/H2O systems Hb can convert to hemichrome but heme is not present, whereas in Triton X-100/n-C5H11OH/H2O microemulsion Hb can convert to hemichrome and then induce the heme monomer to leave the hydrophobic cavity of Hb. UV-irradiation can also convert Hb to hemichrome, and subsequently make heme to be photodegraded, in which the conversion rate depends on the structure of the surfactant aggregates. Furthermore, in order to understand the mechanism of photostabilization of Hb in Triton X-100 systems, the photostabilization of heme in the Triton X-100 aqueous solutions and Triton X-100/n-C5H11OH/H2O microemulsions has been studied.  相似文献

Concave gold nanoplates are obtained in hexagonal liquid crystal (LLC) made of SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate)/glycine/HAuCl(4) aqueous solution system where glycine plays the key role. All plates are single-crystals, characterized by {111} facets, with concave centers of regular hexagonal or triangular shapes, and with better electrocatalytic activity than gold nanoplates.  相似文献

Mixed self-assembled monolayers formed by the coadsorption of hydroxyl- and methyl-terminated alkanethiols with similar chain lengths have been characterized by friction force microscopy. Friction coefficients have been determined by assuming a fit to Amonton's law. The friction coefficients vary linearly with the fraction of polar-terminated adsorbates in the self-assembled monolayer (SAM). With carboxylic acid-terminated tips, the coefficient of friction increases with the fraction of hydroxyl-terminated thiols, while with methyl-terminated tips it decreases. Similar trends are observed for pull-off forces, which increase and decrease as a function of the fraction of polar-terminated adsorbates for carboxylic acid- and methyl-terminated adsorbates, respectively. Analysis of histograms of adhesion forces has yielded insights into the phase structure of mixed SAMs. Single-component monolayers yield histograms that may be fitted to symmetric Gaussian distributions, irrespective of the nature of the terminal group on either the tip or the SAM. However, mixed monolayers yield broad, asymmetric distributions that could not be fitted with a Gaussian distribution. The best explanation for these data is that mixed SAMs of hydroxyl- and methyl-terminated alkanethiols of similar chain length form phase-separated structures.  相似文献

Modification of important physicochemical properties of aqueous surfactant solutions can be achieved by addition of environmentally benign room temperature ionic liquids (ILs). While low aqueous solubility of "hydrophobic" ILs limits the amount of IL that may be added to achieve desired changes in the physicochemical properties, hydrophilic ILs do not have such restrictions associated to them. Alterations in the key physicochemical properties of aqueous solutions of a common nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX100) on addition of up to 30 wt % hydrophilic IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4]) are reported. The presence of micellar aggregates in as high as 30 wt % [bmim][BF4]-added aqueous TX100 solutions is established by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence probe behavior. Increasing the concentration of [bmim][BF4] results in decrease in average micellar size and aggregation number and increase in critical micelle concentration, indicating an overall unfavorable aggregation process. Increase in the dipolarity and the microfluidity of the probe cybotactic region within the palisade layer of the micellar phase upon [bmim][BF4] addition implies increased water penetration and the possibility of TX100-[bmim][BF4] interactions. While the changes in some of the physicochemical properties indicate the role of [bmim][BF4] to be similar to a cosurfactant, the IL acts like a cosolvent as far as changes in other properties are concerned. Effectiveness of IL [bmim][BF4] in modifying physicochemical properties of aqueous TX100 is demonstrated.  相似文献

Gold complex, HAuCl(4) has been transformed into pink-coloured stable gold sol having lambda(max) at 523 nm (in=3.06x10(3)1.mol(-1)cm(-1)) at room temperature in aqueous Triton X-100 (TX-100) upon photoirradiation. It is a very rapid and simple process and the absorbance at 523 nm is a direct measure of gold concentration. Beer's law is obeyed in the range of 0-150 ppm of gold. The relative standard deviation for 22.7 and 90.9 ppm of gold are 2.8 and 2.5% respectively. The 95% confidence limit (ten determinations) for 22.7 ppm of gold is 23.6+/-0.5 ppm. Sandell sensitivity is 6.44x10(-2) mug cm(-2). TX-100 acts both as a reducing agent and a stabilizer here. Statistical parameters, effects of TX-100 concentration, irradiation time and interferents are studied. The method is applicable for ore and synthetic mixture analysis.  相似文献

A surface of the phase diagram and X-ray diffraction studies are presented. The chemical stability of this mixture is compared with the potassium laurate/decanol/water mixture.
