A one parameter family of self-starting explicit Runge-Kutta-Nyström methods has been obtained for the solution of the general second order singular initial value problem with spherical symmetry of the formu+2r –1 u=f(r, u, u),u(0)=A, u(0)=0. The methods are exact foru(r)=r –1, l,r, r 2,r 3 andr 4.

Let u+u=v+v= 0, where isthe Laplace–Beltrami operator on a compact connected smoothmanifold M and > 0. If H 1(M) = 0then there exists pM such that u(p)=v(p) = 0 For homogeneous M,H 1(M) 0 implies the existence of a pair u,v as above that has no common zero.

This paper deals with positive solutions of degenerate and strongly coupled quasi-linear parabolic system not in divergence form: ut=vp(u+au), vt=uq (v+bv) with null Dirichlet boundary condition and positive initial condition, where p, q, a and b are all positive constants, and p, q 1. The local existence of positive classical solution is proved. Moreover, it will be proved that: (i) When min {a, b} 1 then there exists global positive classical solution, and all positive classical solutions can not blow up in finite time in the meaning of maximum norm (we can not prove the uniqueness result in general); (ii) When min {a, b} > 1, there is no global positive classical solution (we can not still prove the uniqueness result), if in addition the initial datum (u0v0) satisfies u0 + au0 0, v0+bv0 0 in , then the positive classical solution is unique and blows up in finite time, where 1 is the first eigenvalue of – in with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. This project was supported by PRC grant NSFC 19831060 and 333 Project of JiangSu Province.

Summary In this paper we discuss the construction of a spline function for a class of singular two-point boundary value problemx (x u)=f (x, u),u(0)=A,u(1)=B, 0<<1 or =1,2. The boundary conditions may also be of the formu(0)=0,u(1)=B. Three point finite difference methods, using the above splines, are obtained for the solution of the boundary value problem. These methods are of second order and are illustrated by four numerical examples.

Let be a ball in N, centered at zero, and letu be a minimizer of the nonconvex functional over one of the classesC M := {w W loc 1, () 0 w(x) M in,w concave} orE M := {w W loc 1,2 () 0 w(x) M in,w 0 inL()}of admissible functions. Thenu is not radial and not unique. Therefore one can further reduce the resistance of Newton's rotational body of minimal resistance through symmetry breaking.

Let be a bounded domain in n (n3) having a smooth boundary, let be an essentially bounded real-valued function defined on × h, and let be a continuous real-valued function defined on a given subset Y of Y h. In this paper, the existence of strong solutions u W 2,p (, h) W o 1,p (n/2<p<+) to the implicit elliptic equation (–u)=(x,u), with u=(u1, u2, ..., uh) and u=(u 1, u 2, ..., u h), is established. The abstract framework where the problem is placed is that of set-valued analysis.

Summary Consider the following quasilinear elliptic PDE, which is equivalent to a nonlinear variational inequality: –divF(u)+(u)f. Here is a singular maximal monotone graph and the nonlinear differential operator is only assumed to be monotone; surfaces of prescribed mean curvature over obstacles may thus be viewed as relevant examples. The numerical approximation proposed in this paper consists of combining continuous piecewise linear finite elements with a preliminary regularization of . The resulting scheme is shown to be quasi-optimally accurate inL . The underlying analysis makes use of both a topological technique and a sharpL p -duality argument. This work was partially supported by Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche of Italy while the author was in residence at the Istituto di Analisi Numerica del C.N.R. di Pavia

For a solution u of –u=u(1–|u|2) on the whole plane, |u|<1 holds everywhere unless u=ei for some ; the derivatives of order k have moduli a constant M kdepending only on k. For a solution u on an open set 2, the moduli of u and its derivatives have upper bounds depending only on the distance to 2\ therefore the set of solutions on a given is compact in C() for the topology of uniform convergence on compact subsets of . For a solution u such that |u|<1, 1–|u| satisfies an estimation similar to the classical Harnack inequality for positive harmonic functions. Finally, if is bounded and |u| has a lim supm at each boundary point, the |u|m in if m1, but if m<1 then |u| admits only a majorant S m with values in ]m, 1[ and sufficient conditions are given for lim S m =0 or S m =O(m) as m0.

Summary In this paper we study the noncharacteristic Cauchy problem, ut–(a(x)ux)x=0, x(0, l), t.(0, T], u(0, t)=(t), ux(0,t)=0, 0tT, assuming only L for a. In the case of weak a priori bounds on u, we derive stability estimates on u of Hölder type in the interior and of logarithmic type at the boundary. Also the continuous dependence on a is considered.

Sinc function approach is used to obtain a quadrature rule for estimating integrals of functions with poles near the are of integration. Special treatment is given to integration over the intervals (–, ), (0, ), and (–1, 1). It is shown that the error of the quadrature rule converges to zero at the rateO(exp(–cN)) asN , whereN is the number of nodes used, and wherec is a positive constant which is independent ofN.

Let G denote a semisimple group, a discrete subgroup, B=G/P the Poisson boundary. Regarding invariants of discrete subgroups we prove, in particular, the following:(1) For any -quasi-invariant measure on B, and any probablity measure on , the norm of the operator () on L 2(B,) is equal to (), where is the unitary representation in L 2(X,), and is the regular representation of .(2) In particular this estimate holds when is Lebesgue measure on B, a Patterson–Sullivan measure, or a -stationary measure, and implies explicit lower bounds for the displacement and Margulis number of (w.r.t. a finite generating set), the dimension of the conformal density, the -entropy of the measure, and Lyapunov exponents of .(3) In particular, when G=PSL2() and is free, the new lower bound of the displacement is somewhat smaller than the Culler–Shalen bound (which requires an additional assumption) and is greater than the standard ball-packing bound. We also prove that ()=G() for any amenable action of G and L 1(G), and conversely, give a spectral criterion for amenability of an action of G under certain natural dynamical conditions. In addition, we establish a uniform lower bound for the -entropy of any measure quasi-invariant under the action of a group with property T, and use this fact to construct an interesting class of actions of such groups, related to 'virtual' maximal parabolic subgroups. Most of the results hold in fact in greater generality, and apply for instance when G is any semi-simple algebraic group, or when is any word-hyperbolic group, acting on their Poisson boundary, for example.

Let {W(s)} s 0 be a standard Wiener process. The supremum of the squared Euclidian norm Y (t)2, of the R2-valued process Y(t)=(1/t W(t), {12/t 3 int0 t s dW (s)– {3/t} W(t)), t [, 1], is the asymptotic, large sample distribution, of a test statistic for a change point detection problem, of appearance of linear trend. We determine the asymptotic behavior P {sup t [, 1] Y(t)2 > u as u , of this statistic, for a fixed (0,1), and for a moving = (u) 0 at a suitable rate as u . The statistical interest of our results lie in their use as approximate test levels.

Let 1, 2, ... be a sequence of i.i.d. random variables with positive mean and finite variance and letr(b), b0, be real numbers tending to 0 asb . Definings n=1+...+n andS n=Sn(b)=sn+r(b)n, the stopping time =(b)=inf {n>/1:Sn >b} whereb=b(b) , will be considered with special regard to the excess over the boundaryR b=s+r(b)–b. It turns out that the limiting distribution ofR b is the same as in the caser(b)0 for allb. Proving this, Blackwell's renewal theorem and its integral version have to be established first in the above stated situation. Finally, an expansion ofE to vanishing terms asb will be provided and applied to some examples arising in economics.

We show how it is possible to prove the existence of solutions of the Mumford-Shah image segmentation functional F(u,K) = \K [u2 + (ug)2]dx + n – 1(K), u W 1,2(\K), K closed in .We use a weak formulation of the minimum problem in a special class SBV() of functions of bounded variation. Moreover, we also deal with the regularity of minimizers and the approximation of F by elliptic functionals defined on Sobolev spaces. In this paper, we have collected the main results of Ambrosio and others.

In the present paper we shall consider an application of simple non-polynomial splines to a numerical solution of a weakly singular two-point boundary value problem:x (x y)=f(x,y), (0<x1) subject toy(0)=0,y(1)=c 1(1) ory(0)=c 2,y(1)=c 3(0<<1). Our collocation method gives a continuously differentiable approximation and isO(h 2)-convergent.

A lower closure theorem for an abstract control problem is proved. The functional isJ(,u)= G f 0(t, (M)(t),u(t))dt and the state equations areN(t)=f(t, (M)(t),u(t)). It is shown that, if {( k ,u k)} is a sequence of admissible controlsu k and corre-sponding trajectories k such that lim infJ( k ,u k)<+ and such that k weakly,M k M strongly,N k N weakly, and {u k} is bounded in someL p norm, then there is a controlu such that (,u) is admissible and lim infJ( k ,u k)J(,u).Dedicated to Professor M. We consider a singularly perturbed convection—diffusion equation, –u+v u=0, defined on a half-infinite strip, (x,y)(0,)×(0,1) with a discontinuous Dirichlet boundary condition: u(x,0)=1, u(x,1)=u(0,y)=0. Asymptotic expansions of the solution are obtained from an integral representation in two limits: (a) as the singular parameter 0+ (with fixed distance r to the discontinuity point of the boundary condition) and (b) as that distance r0+ (with fixed ). It is shown that the first term of the expansion at =0 contains an error function or a combination of error functions. This term characterizes the effect of discontinuities on the -behavior of the solution and its derivatives in the boundary or internal layers. On the other hand, near the point of discontinuity of the boundary condition, the solution u(x,y) is approximated by a linear function of the polar angle at the point of discontinuity (0,0).

This paper deals with polynomial approximations(x) to the exponential function exp(x) related to numerical procedures for solving initial value problems. Motivated by stability requirements, we present a numerical study of the largest diskD()={z C: |z+|} that is contained in the stability regionS()={z C: |(z)|1}. The radius of this largest disk is denoted byr(), the stability radius. On the basis of our numerical study, several conjectures are made concerningr m,p=sup {r(): m,p}. Here m, p (1pm; p, m integers) is the class of all polynomials(x) with real coefficients and degree m for which(x)=exp(x)+O(x p+1) (forx 0).

Summary We consider the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation u+u=0 inD with the boundary conditionsu=0 on D. D is the Swiss Cross — a region consisting of five unit squares. A method based on the concept of Coherence is utilized to determine an approximation for the first eigenvalue= 1 more accurate than calculated by classical difference methods. The numerical result is used to illustrate isoperimetric upper and lower bounds for 1, and to test some conjectures on its relations with torsional rigidity.Dedicated to the memory of Professor Lathar Collatz
