We report the formation of Si(1 1 3)-3 × 2 facets upon exposing oxygens on the Si(5 5 12) surface at an elevated temperature. These facets are found to form only for a limited range of oxygen exposure and exhibit a well-defined 3 × 2 LEED pattern. We also find the surface electronic state unique only to the facets in the valence band. The spectral feature of these electronic states and the behavior of a (1/3 1/2) LEED spot upon oxygen contents in the facets indicate that the formation is a heterogeneous mixture of the clean Si(1 1 3) facets free of oxygens and other facets containing oxygen atoms.  相似文献

Initial adsorption of oxygen molecules on the Si(1 1 0)-16 × 2 surface and subsequent modification of the bonding states induced by mild (300 °C) annealing have been studied by synchrotron-radiation photoemission spectroscopy and scanning-tunneling microscopy. It has been shown that upon annealing, the intensity and the energy positions of the Si 2p suboxide components shift towards the values characteristic for the thermal oxide. This indicates the presence of a metastable chemisorption state of oxygen on the Si(1 1 0)-16 × 2 surface.  相似文献

The Au/Ti(0 0 0 1) adsorption system was studied by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and photoemission spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation after step-wise Au evaporation onto the Ti(0 0 0 1) surface. For adsorption of Au at 300 K, no additional superstructures were observed and the (1 × 1) pattern of the clean surface simply became diffuse. Annealing of gold layers more than 1 ML thick resulted in the formation of an ordered Au-Ti surface alloy. Depending on the temperature and annealing time, three surface reconstructions were observed by LEED: (√3 × √3) R30°, (2 × 2) and a one-dimensional incommensurate (√3 × √3) rectangular pattern. The Au 4f core level and valence band photoemission spectra provided evidence of a strong chemical interaction between gold and titanium. The data indicated formation of an intermetallic interface and associated valence orbital hybridization, together with diffusion of gold into the bulk. Au core-level shifts were found to be dependent on the surface alloy stoichiometry.  相似文献

Spectroscopic effects associated with the superperiodic surface structure have been observed in Au(1 1 1) vicinal surfaces and nanostructured systems. In the vicinal Au(23 23 21) surface, high resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows the opening of several gaps in the surface band structure, whereas scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals the energy dependence of the electronic density. These combined spectroscopic data allow to determine the reconstruction potential by deducing their first Fourier components. We also demonstrate that due to the peculiar growth on this Au vicinal surface, we can obtain a self-assembled superlattice of triangular Ag islands. The high ordering of the nanostructures leads to homogenous electronic properties.  相似文献

The growth of thin K films on Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 has been investigated by selecting the input and output polarizations of second-harmonic generation (SHG) at room temperature (RT) and at an elevated temperature of 350 °C. The SH intensity at 350 °C showed a monotonic increase with K coverages up to a saturated level, where low energy electron diffraction (LEED) showed a 3 × 1 reconstructed structure. The additional deposition onto the K-saturated surface at 350 °C showed only a marginal change in the SH intensity. These variations are different from the multi-component variations up to 1 ML and orders of magnitude increase due to excitation of plasmons in the multilayers at RT. The variations of SHG during desorption of K at 350 °C showed a two-step decay with a marked shoulder which most likely corresponds to the saturation K coverage of the Si(1 1 1)-3 × 1-K surface. The dominant tensor elements contributing to SHG are also identified for each surface.  相似文献

We have investigated the electronic structure of the Yb/Si(1 1 1)-(3 × 2) surface using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Five surface states have been identified in the gap of the bulk band projection. Among these five surface state, the dispersions of three of them agree well with those of the surface states of monovalent atom adsorbed Si(1 1 1)-(3 × 1) surfaces. The dispersions of the two other surface states agree well with those observed on the Ca/Si(1 1 1)-(3 × 2) surface, whose basic structure is the same as that of monovalent atom adsorbed Si(1 1 1)-(3 × 1) surfaces. Taking these results into account, we conclude that the five surface states observed in the band gap originate from the orbitals of Si atoms that form a honeycomb-chain-channel structure.  相似文献

Ba-induced quasi-one-dimensional reconstructions of the Si(1 1 1) surface have been investigated by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). While the 3 × ‘2’ surface shows double-periodicity along the stripes in STM images consistent with half-order streaks observed in LEED patterns, no sign of the double-periodicity along the chain direction was detected for the 5 × 1 surface. The 5× stripes in STM images show internal structures with multiple rows. The two rows comprising the boundaries of a 5× stripe in the filled-state STM image are found to have 3a × √3/2 spacing across the stripe. The observation of the successive 3× and 2× spacings between the boundary rows supports a structural model proposed for the Ba-induced 5 × 1 Si reconstruction composed of honeycomb chains and Seiwatz chains. The highest coverage 2 × 8 surface does not reveal a quasi-1D row structure in STM images.  相似文献

We present the results of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of the Ta/Si(1 1 1)-7 × 7 system after deposition of Ta at substrate temperatures from 300 to 1250 K. The coverage of Ta varied from 0.05 up to 2.5 of a monolayer (ML). STM shows that at 300 K and coverage less than 1 ML, a disordered chemisorbed phase is formed. Deposition on a hot surface (above 500 K) produces round 3D clusters randomly distributed on the surface. Cluster height and their diameter are found to change drastically with annealing temperature and the Ta coverage. Analysis of photoemission data of the Si 2p core levels shows that at room temperature and at coverage ?1 ML core level binding energy shifts and intensity variations of Si surface related components are observed, which clearly indicate that the reaction starts already at 300 K. Shifts in the binding energy, changes of the peak shapes and intensity of the Ta 4f doublet at higher temperatures can be explained by the formation of stable silicide on the surface.  相似文献

This work has three main themes: (1) fabricate atomically precise nanostructures at surfaces, particularly nanowires consisting of atom chains; (2) explore the behavior of one-dimensional electrons in atomic chains; (3) find the fundamental limits of data storage using an atomic scale memory. Semiconductor surfaces lend themselves towards self-assembly, because the broken covalent bonds create elaborate reconstruction patterns to minimize the surface energy. An example is the large 7 × 7 unit cell on Si(1 1 1), which can be used as building block. On semiconductors, the surface electrons completely de-couple from the substrate, as long as their energy lies in the band gap. Angle-resolved photoemission reveals surprising features, such as a fractional band filling and a spin-splitting at a non-magnetic surface. An interesting by-product is a memory structure with self-assembled tracks that are five atom rows wide and store a bit by the presence or absence of a single silicon atom. This toy memory is used to test the fundamental limits of data storage and to see how storage on silicon compares to storage in DNA.  相似文献

We have carried out adsorption and residual thermal desorption experiments of Indium on Si (1 1 1) 7 × 7 reconstructed surface, in the submonolayer regime, in Ultra High Vacuum (UHV) using in situ probes such as Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) and Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED). The coverage information from AES and the surface symmetry from LEED is used to draw a 2D phase diagram which characterizes each observed superstructural phases. The different superstructural phases observed are Si(1 1 1)7 × 7-In, Si(1 1 1)√3 × √3R30°-In, Si(1 1 1)4 × 1-In, Si(1 1 1)2√3 × 2√3R30°-In and Si(1 1 1)√7 × √3-In in characteristic temperature and coverage regime. In addition to the 1/3 ML, √3 × √3-In phase, we observe two additional √3 × √3-In phases at around 0.6 and 1 ML. Our careful residual thermal desorption studies yields the Si(1 1 1)2√3 × 2√3R30°-In phase which has infrequently appeared in the literature. We probe theoretically the structure of this phase according to the LEED structure and coverage measured by AES, assuming that the model for Si(1 1 1)2√3 × 2√3R30°-In is very proximal to the well established Si(1 1 1)2√3 × 2√3R30°-Sn phase, using ab initio calculation based on pseudopotentials and Density Functional Theory (DFT) to simulate an STM image of the system. Calculations show the differences in the atomic position and charge distribution in the Si(1 1 1)2√3 × 2√3R30°-In case.  相似文献

Band dispersion and transient population of unoccupied electronic states on Si(1 1 1):√3 × √3-Ag surface have been studied by time-resolved (TR) and angle-resolved (AR) two-photon photoemission (2PPE) spectroscopy. The band dispersions originating from unoccupied electronic states have been identified from the comparison between AR-2PPE spectra and angle-resolved one-photon photoemission spectra with synchrotron radiation. A lifetime of unoccupied surface state has been determined from the TR-2PPE spectra.  相似文献

We deposited 0.01-0.16 ML (monolayer) of potassium on stepped (7 5 5) [=6(1 1 1) × (1 0 0)] surface of nickel in order to fabricate and to understand the growth process of one-dimensional (1D) potassium atomic-chain structure by observing the low-energy-electron-diffraction (LEED) patterns. The LEED patterns from potassium adsorbates exhibit a distinct coverage dependence that 1× streaks first appeared at low coverages up to 0.04 ML and later 2× streaks appeared at around 0.09 ML. The streaks become spotty at the higher coverage. We explained these coverage-dependent changes in LEED patterns in a thorough comparison with kinematically calculated LEED patterns constructing a reasonable growth model.  相似文献

We have studied adsorption of water on the Zr(0 0 0 1) surface at sub-monolayer coverage by means of LEED and photoemission spectroscopy. An ordered (2 × 2) structure is formed after adsorption of 0.6-1.4 Langmuirs at 473 K. The sharpest LEED pattern was observed at an exposure of 1.2 L implying a coverage of 0.5 ML of oxygen. The same exposure at 293 K gives only a weak and diffuse (2 × 2) pattern. In addition, the sharp (2 × 2) pattern obtained at 473 K can be reversibly weakened by cooling to 293 K and subsequently sharpened by heating. For the sharp (2 × 2) structure, valence band spectra indicated dissociation of water and showed a peak composed mainly of O 2p derived states with two components at 6.0 eV and 6.6 eV binding energy. On cooling to 293 K, the O 2p peak became narrower and a new state appeared at 7.9 eV. Two components of the O 1s core level were resolved for the (2 × 2) structure, assigned to oxide and hydroxyl groups. The hydrogen on the surface of Zr(0 0 0 1) resulting from the dissociation of water and from bulk segregation strongly influenced the formation of the (2 × 2) structure of oxygen, and caused a temperature instability of the structure.  相似文献

We have employed synchrotron radiation photoemission to investigate calcium fluoride deposited on Si(001)-2×1 annealed at 700 °C. The valence band spectra reveal that the initial molecules are dissociated to single Ca atoms resting on the surface. Si 2p core-level spectra manifest a negatively shifted Ca-induced line at 0.35 eV. The dissociated Ca atoms occupy only half of the surface, on top of which the CaF2 molecules commence growth. This is in contrast to the Si(111)-7×7 counterpart, which exhibits a CaF layer in the interface. Strong elastic scattering due to the absorbed Ca atoms is evident in the photoemission spectra, thus averaging out the angle-dependent features.  相似文献

We have carried out an angle-resolved photoemission study for CoSi2 nanofilms grown on the Si(111)-7×7 substrates. The surface of CoSi2(111) nanofilm changes from the bulk-truncated surface to the surface with additional Si-bilayer by annealing at higher temperature above 825 K. The angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the CoSi2 nanofilm annealed at 853 K show the spectral features originated from the surface resonance state on the CoSi2 surface terminated by Si-bilayer. From the detailed photoemission study, we discuss the surface electronic structure in CoSi2(111) nanofilms grown on Si(111) substrates.  相似文献

MnSi is a ferromagnetic compound with a Curie temperature of 29 K. Recent theoretical studies predict that 2 ML of MnSi epitaxially grown on Si show a ferromagnetic metallic ground state with spin polarization of about 50%. This would allow the development of spintronic devices based on the injection of spin-polarized current from a ferromagnetic metal into a semiconductor. In this context the possibility of growing in situ MnSi on the Si(1 1 1) surface has been explored. Thermal reaction, crystalline structure and electronic properties of the grown films have been studied in situ by photoemission spectroscopy (PES), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Depositing a thin film of Mn on Si(1 1 1) the formation of ordered islands (with dimensions dependent on the amount of deposited Mn) is driven by annealing at selected temperatures, as already observed. Our preliminary studies show that by simultaneously depositing Mn and Si in 1:1 stoichiometry on Si(1 1 1) a large improvement in the homogeneity of the MnSi films is achieved.  相似文献

The initial Ge growth stages on a (√3 × √3)R30°-reconstructed SiC(0 0 0 1) surface (√3) have been studied using a complete set of surface techniques such as reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and photoemission and compared with similar Si surface enrichments in place of Ge. The investigations essentially focus on the wetting growth-regimes that are favoured by the use of the √3 surface as a starting substrate, this surface being the closest to a smooth and ideally truncated Si-terminated face of hexagonal SiC(0 0 0 1). Depending on temperature and Ge or Si coverages, varying surface organizations are obtained. They range from unorganized layer by layer growths to relaxed Ge(1 1 1) or Si(1 1 1) island growths, through intermediate attempts of coherent and strained Ge or Si surface layers, characterized by 4 × 4 and 3 × 3 surface reconstructions, respectively. RHEED intensity oscillation recordings, as a function of Ge or Si deposited amounts, have been particularly helpful to pinpoint the limited (by the high lattice mismatch) existence domains of these interesting coherent phases, either in terms of formation temperature or surface coverages. Prominently comparable data for these two Ge- and Si-related reconstructions allow us to propose an atomic model for the still unexplained Ge-4 × 4 one. It is based on a same local organization in trimer and ad-atom units for the Ge excess as admitted for the Si-excess of the 3 × 3 surface, the higher strain nevertheless favouring arrangements, for the Ge-units, in 4 × 4 arrays instead of 3 × 3 Si ones. Admitting such models, 1.25 and 1.44 monolayers of Ge and Si, should, respectively, be able to lie coherently on SiC, with respective lattice mismatches near 30% and 25%. The experimental RHEED-oscillations values are compatible with such theoretical ones. Moreover, these RHEED coverage determinations (for layer completion, for instance) inform us in turn about the initial Si richness of the starting √3 reconstruction and help us to discriminate between earlier contradictory atomic models proposed in the literature.  相似文献

The adsorption of two very different adsorbates, gold and oxygen, induce the formation of a (3 × 1) surface structure on both W(1 1 2) and Mo(1 1 2). In spite of similar adsorbate unit cells, the surface electronic structure, derived from photoemission, exhibits pronounced differences for the two adsorbates. Indeed, both experiment and simulations indicate substantial changes in electronic structures of (1 × 1) and (3 × 1) gold overlayers supported by highly anisotropic (1 1 2) plane. We speculate that (3 × 1) is a favored periodicity in the atomic rearrangement of the (1 1 2) surfaces of molybdenum and tungsten due in part as a result of the initial state band structure of these surfaces.  相似文献

In this study, InP(1 0 0) surfaces were bombarded by argon ions in ultra high vacuum. Indium metallic droplets were created in well controlled quantities and played the role of precursors for the nitridation process. A glow discharge cell was used to produce a continuous plasma with a majority of N atomic species. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies indicated that the nitrogen combined with indium surface atoms to create InN thin films (two monolayers) on an In rich-InP(1 0 0) surface. This process occurred at low temperature: 250 °C. Synchrotron radiation photoemission (SR-XPS) studies of the valence band spectra, LEED and EELS measurements show an evolution of surface species and the effect of a 450 °C annealing of the InN/InP structures. The results reveal that annealing allows the crystallization of the thin InN layers, while the LEED pattern shows a (4 × 1) reconstruction. As a consequence, InN related structures in EELS and valence bands spectra are different before and after the annealing. According to SR-XPS measurements, the Fermi level is found to be pinned at 1.6 eV above the valence band maximum (VBM).  相似文献

We studied the low temperature (T ? 130 K) growth of Ag on Si(0 0 1) and Si(1 1 1) flat surfaces prepared by Si homo epitaxy with the aim to achieve thin metallic films. The band structure and morphology of the Ag overlayers have been investigated by means of XPS, UPS, LEED, STM and STS. Surprisingly a (√3 × √3)R30° LEED structure for Ag films has been observed after deposition of 2-6 ML Ag onto a Si(1 1 1)(√3 × √3)R30°Ag surface at low temperatures. XPS investigations showed that these films are solid, and UPS measurements indicate that they are metallic. However, after closer STM studies we found that these films consists of sharp Ag islands and (√3 × √3)R30°Ag flat terraces in between. On Si(0 0 1) the low-temperature deposition yields an epitaxial growth of Ag on clean Si(0 0 1)-2 × 1 with a twinned Ag(1 1 1) structure at coverage’s as low as 10 ML. Furthermore the conductivity of few monolayer Ag films on Si(1 0 0) surfaces has been studied as a function of temperature (40-300 K).  相似文献
