We show that c0c0 is the only Banach space with unconditional basis that satisfies the equation Ext(X,X)=0Ext(X,X)=0. This partially improves an old result by Kalton and Peck. We prove that the Kalton–Peck maps are strictly singular on a number of sequence spaces, including ?p?p for 0<p<∞0<p<, Tsirelson and Schlumprecht spaces and their duals, as well as certain super-reflexive variations of these spaces. In the last section, we give estimates of the projection constants of certain finite-dimensional twisted sums of Kalton–Peck type.  相似文献

It is known that within metric spaces analyticity and K-analyticity are equivalent concepts. It is known also that non-separable weakly compactly generated (shortly WCG) Banach spaces over R or C provide concrete examples of weakly K-analytic spaces which are not weakly analytic. We study the case which totally differs from the above one. A general theorem is provided which shows that a Banach space E over a locally compact non-archimedean non-trivially valued field is weakly Lindelöf iff E is separable iff E is WCG iff E is weakly web-compact (in the sense of Orihuela). This provides a non-archimedean version of a remarkable Amir-Lindenstrauss theorem.  相似文献

Let X be a Banach space. We prove that, for a large class of Banach or quasi-Banach spaces E of X-valued sequences, the sets E-?qΓ?q(X), where Γ is any subset of (0,], and E-c0(X) contain closed infinite-dimensional subspaces of E (if non-empty, of course). This result is applied in several particular cases and it is also shown that the same technique can be used to improve a result on the existence of spaces formed by norm-attaining linear operators.  相似文献

This paper contains two results concerning linear embeddings of subsets of Euclidean space in low-dimensional normed spaces. The first is an improvement of the known dependence on ? in Dvoretzky's theorem from order of ?2 to order of ? (except for log factors). A Banach space is hereditarily finitely decomposable if it does not contain finite direct sums of infinite dimensional subspaces with arbitrarily large number of summands. Here we show that the class of all hereditarily finitely decomposable Banach spaces has the three-space property. We first give some new examples of translation invariant subspaces of C or U without local unconditional structure. In the second part, we prove that U and U + do not have the Gordon–Lewis property. In the third part, we show that absolutely summing operators from U to a K-convex space are compact. As a consequence, U and U + are not isomorphic. We show that a continuous additive positively homogeneous map from a closed not necessarily proper cone in a Banach space onto a Banach space is an open map precisely when it is surjective. This generalization of the usual Open Mapping Theorem for Banach spaces is then combined with Michael's Selection Theorem to yield the existence of a continuous bounded positively homogeneous right inverse of such a surjective map; a strong version of the usual Open Mapping Theorem is then a special case. As another consequence, an improved version of the analogue of Andô's Theorem for an ordered Banach space is obtained for a Banach space that is, more generally than in Andô's Theorem, a sum of possibly uncountably many closed not necessarily proper cones. Applications are given for a (pre)-ordered Banach space and for various spaces of continuous functions taking values in such a Banach space or, more generally, taking values in an arbitrary Banach space that is a finite sum of closed not necessarily proper cones.  相似文献

Relatively recently it was proved that if Γ is an arbitrary set, then any equivalent norm on c0(Γ) can be approximated uniformly on bounded sets by polyhedral norms and C smooth norms, with arbitrary precision. We extend this result to more classes of spaces having uncountable symmetric bases, such as preduals of the ‘discrete’ Lorentz spaces d(w,1,Γ), and certain symmetric Nakano spaces and Orlicz spaces. We also show that, given an arbitrary ordinal number α, there exists a scattered compact space K having Cantor–Bendixson height at least α, such that every equivalent norm on C(K) can be approximated as above.  相似文献
